LOMBEGO SURFERS - Third Stage 7'' 2001

Weekend and the last day of April and in keeping with the rising temperatures, now the appropriate sound for the dance into May. The Lombego Surfers are a Swiss GarageRockPunk and Surf instrumental band from Basel and the three warriors have been riding through Europe for over twenty years and they don’t give a hoot about trends. Musically they convince with their hard straight Rock’N’Roll and bring every lame club to a boil. The almost dozen albums and numerous singles to date prove that they enjoy what they do. The current line-up consists of Anthony (vocals/guitar), Pascal (bass), Olivier (drums) and the current album Heading Out came out in 2018. This is their fifth single with two solid numbers and I'll have a cold beer with it and rock out a little, Cheers!

- Great Thx to Reinhard -

DIVISION 4 - On The Beat EP 1982

Another fund of my hard drive and this month is definitely the one with the most posts of this genre. 100% mod/powerpop from Sydney by Division 4. A short info: Brothers Kieren and Brad Fitzpatrick were playing in a local punk band in 1979 when they placed an ad looking for a drummer on a noticeboard at the University of NSW. Joe Genua responded, and brought with him bass player Antony Howell Smith III. Division 4 (named after the classic Aussie cop show of the early 1970s) seized on the burgeoning mod revival movement, swiftly building a strong inner-city following in Sydney. Their only legacy is this rare three track EP but an important light in the sky of this genre and came out on their own label. The band split up in 1984. Maintained on two cool compilations, Sound Of Sydney Vol.1 & Powerpearls #5Please send the first, thx (it's been dealt with).

KEIN MENSCH! - s/t EP 1981 + Süchtig 7'' 1982

Doublepack now with a four piece from Hagen. Kein MenscH! was a wave/punk combo and were founded late seventies by Gabi (vocals/synth/piano/flute/sax), Rü (vocals/guitars), Hans-Uli (bass/percussion), Bille Balle (bass) and were one of the first bands who replaced drums by the drum synthesizer Roland TR-808 and Korg MS-20. Kein MenscH! is electronic, minimal, punk, rock, pop and their music combines garish synthesizer sounds with the innovative use of electric guitars. In the change between punk riffs, harmonic melodies and experimental sounds, varied songs were created. The pieces contentwise deal with human strengths and weaknesses and with the social Zeitgeist. The first single was produced by Tom Dokoupil (The Wirtschaftswunder) and appeared 1981 on the indie label Tonträger 58. The following EP Süchtig one year later via Virgin. Also represented on the legendary Alles Aus Hagen & Neue Deutsche Unterhaltungsmusik (Rock In Deutschland, Vol. III) compilations plus various bootleg slabs. Unfortunately an album was not realized, but it was enough for a tape which the band made in 1988. The grandiose WSDP label honored them in 2007 with an impressive record (limited edition) with more rare lost nuggets. In any case, interesting music with pioneer spirit.

UNTER DEN LINDEN - Motstånd I Läder EP 1983

Now to a Swedish combo (and very underrated in my opinion) from Karlshamn which were formed in 1980 and consisted of Björn, Jochen, Leif, Ulf. Their first gig was October 22, 1980 and they released two singles and two albums on Amalthea in the 80s. They collaborated with the band Att Som and recorded together the debut Unter Den Linden/Att Som slab and the band members of the two bands played on each other songs. From the band name one would think that it could be cozy and poppy music, but it's far from it. The A-side is a solid three minute stomper which infect you instantly. But with the flip they kick the shit out of your ass with two fantastic fast punk smasher (spontaneously I can't find another Swedish combo in comparison that played such killer riffs)... Hell Yeah! Besser geht's nicht!  Also represented on some compilations. The band split up in 1987, but you should definitely take a closer look at.

VAINS - You May Not Believe In Vains But You Cannot Deny Terror EP 1980

First, all requested re-ups are done and after scouring my hard drive again, I keep coming across hidden treasures and I think I won't be able to listen to all of them in this life, unless I reach retirement age and sit on the beach near my holiday home in Cyprus, but it's not that far yet. But one of them is rolling now in. The debut record by the Vains from Seatlle on No Threes Records, formed by Criss (vocals/guitars), Nico (bass), Andy (drums) in the late seventies. This record was pressed in an edition of 1000 copies and offers three untamed fantastic killers. The detectives have also immortalized all three songs on various Killed By Death compilations. What more punk heart do you want?

MEN AT WORK - Cargo 1983

Unfortunately yesterday it didn't work out with a success in the Bayer Arena and now it's getting tight again for the SGE. Well, let's wait and see. Now to today's post; and a band which I love listen to, then and still today, and Cargo is the second studio album by Men At Work and it had been finished in mid-1982, but was held back due to the success of their debut on the international market, because Business As Usual was still riding high. Even if the criticisms are rather moderate, this slab is worth listening, with its excellent single releases, which were played up and down at the time, and can seamlessly keep up with the previous one in my opinion. There are enough reviews to read on the web, but make your own picture of this very good rockpop record, the last interesting work of this combo from Melbourne.

V/A - Hurra For Norge #4 2008

Uncooked, wild, partly unpublished, rough and excellent material also offers the fourth outpouring from Svindel Records, whose mini-series Hurra For Norge takes us deeply into the fantastic Norwegian subculture and shows its diversity with thirty-four blasts from the period 1978-1988The sound is variable as usual and many bands never saw the inside of a studio, several of the recordings are from live gigs and from rehearsal rooms, but in a good sound quality, I would say. Definitely interesting for all collectors and punkers who like the rare and rough, and those who like to discover new stuff. So friends, that's it for today. THE SUICIDE COMMANDOS - Mark He's A Terror 7'' 1977

Pretty second single with two decent garagepunkrock goodies by the Suicide Commandos, a trio from Minneapolis/Minnesota and formed 1974 and consisted of Steve (vocals/bass), he later joined the Crackers, Chris (guitars), Dave (drums) and were one of the pioneer US bands touring the country. They released two singles on P.S. Records in the late seventies before signing with Blank Records (a subsidiary label of Mercury Records) in 1977 and releasing one album, Make A Record. Despite their short original four year stint together, the Suicide Commandos are considered the pioneers for jump-starting a punkrock music scene in the Twin Cities. A live album, The Suicide Commandos Commit Suicide Dance Concert (1000 copies) was released on Twin/Tone Records in 1979, which was their last performance together before the band broke up. From 2007 they got back together for a few gigs and released their current album Time Bomb in 2016. The Suicide Commandos have been honored with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue, recognizing performers that have played sold-out shows or have otherwise demonstrated a major contribution to the culture at the iconic venue. Receiving a star "might be the most prestigious public honor an artist can receive in Minneapolis," according to journalist Steve Marsh. (source:wiki)

ÜBERDOSIS GRAU - Schritt Ins Nichts EP 1997

Powerful, energetic and ponderous mucke far from slogans with deep thought lyrics by this three-piece from Frankenthal, a small kaff in the south of Rheinland-Pfalz and Überdosis Grau exist since approx. 1993, emerged from the Slime cover band "Die Letzten" they have remained loyal to the minimalist line-up: Flo (vocals/guitar), Tobi (bass), Stefan (drums). This is their debut slab on Freibeuter Records with four goodies. Like most bands, Überdosis Grau started with cover numbers. The repertoire included songs from Toxoplasma, Ramones and Nirvana, among others. Above all, these bands shaped the style of their own songs which they mixed with a dose of depression and a bit gloom. However, pressure and speed were not saved, so that the current style of the band could develop. To date they have released two albums and on few compilations. In any case interesting band far from Pogo. Listen!

REALLY 3RD'S - Everyday, Everyway 7'' 1981

The weekend is here and let's tackle it with a real blast. In keeping with the blue sky and sun, the title track goes mercilessly into my veins and shoots me forward, and whatever may come, I swing over itA real PowerPop gem have the three with this song create and listening three times in a row is still not enough. The flip shines with a solid instrumental piece which is just as well played. 1000 copies were pressed on their own Really 3rds Record label without a sleeve. A bit info from discogs: "From Pontypridd in Wales, Really 3rd were a trio comprising guitarist Neil Lawrence, bassist Paul Pember, and a drummer identified only as Philip. After the self-financed release of the single "Everyday, Everyway," they changed their name to Shake Some Action in 1982 and became a mod revival band, but don't appear to have recorded in their new identity." No wonder that the song is used on a hand full of good compilations (Powerpearls Vol.1 for example). I say: Chapeau!

THE PARTISANS - Hysteria EP 2001

Now militant island stuff and something well-tried and you know I'm a lazy writer I quote a suitable one which I found in the web, written from back then: "If you are really into early UK Punk, chances are that you're a fan of the Pogo punx the Partisans. These guys are back together after thirteen years of silence, but with only two original members Spike on vocals and this time around on guitar also, and Lealand still on guitar. They're back with a new EP titled "Hysteria" via the American label TKO Records. The songs on this slab could have easily been on their second album The Time Was Right. The Partisans are still not afraid of showing their energetic clash influences instrumentally on all three tracks. The lyrics talk about how everyone else is making more money, and etc. (the usual from this band). All along this whole three song record will have you singing the tunes after just one listen for the rest of your life. You know you want this because this is just another great "Top" release by a classic band, so go grab your wallet and buy it, or if you're too "Punk" to buy it steal a copy. (Thx to Brett)" - In 2004 they released their last record and two years later the band toured the UK with fellow Welsh punk band Picture Frame Seduction and played the Punk & Disorderly festival 2007 in Berlin. No further plans are being made to play live, although on 27. November 2015 they opened for the Italian glam rockers Giuda @ Orion, a rock venue in Ciampino, a small town near Rome and maybe they'll come back with a bang, who knows.

TWEED - Fashion EP 1981

And because it's so beautiful in France, we stay a bit and find another rare debut 7Inch by Tweed on Smap Records, a three piece from Rouen and consisted of Stéphane (vocals/guitar), Christophe (bass), Eric (drums), and the band was created while the Revival Mod Movement at that time. Tweed shine with three catchy melodic PowerPop songs, that they sing in English, and I'm sure every heartbeat of lovers of this genre beats faster, including me, when you listen to this. At the moment I am digging up the treasures that slumber on my hard drive and that's because I'm in a Mod/PowerPop flow and enjoy this good mood sound and I'm very fond of these treasures. It's impressive in how many countries this style found its way into, and it's important to be different from the stupid, content & wrecked society. They made two more records and in the early 90s they disbanded, honored on some good compilations.

PIZZA O.D. - Maison Hantée EP 2012

Second EP from the Lyonnais trio! with four tracks and this is really a good record, catchy '77 style goodies mixed with a little poppunk and the lyrics are nihilistic but good to hear. The band is Alex (vocals/guitars), Marie (bass), Vincent (drums) and they made two 7Inches and two tapes. Well, I can't tell you more here either and I bought the record because of the low price. I guess, the band has already broke up. This superb slab was released by the band themselves and came in three different cover colors. The proof that cheap slices don't always have to be bad has Pizza O.D. clearly refuted and that the French can still write good punksongs as well.

THE RAZOR BLADES & FLERE DØDE PANSERE - Forhadt Ungdom EP 1983

Solid Hardcore stuff from the early 80's on DK Decay Records with the Razor Blades from Glamsbjerg and they were active in 1979-1984 and consisted of Johan (vocals), Gug (guitars), Søren (bass), Martin (drums). They made two 7Inches and a tape in their short lifespan. Two compilations followed in the beginning and middle of the 2000s. Flere Døde Pansere were Bente (vocals), Gug (guitars), Morten (bass), Yrza (drums) and, I guess from this place as well. This band with female vocals only did this split EP. I don't have more infos, but that's enough for a quick post tonight. I received new records and I dedicate myself to them now. Eleven goodies for my favorite day of the week...

THE NEW GUITARS - Laught At Me 7'' 1980

Before another important match in an hour rolls on in the Bundesliga, I'll adjust the mood accordingly with the next slab by the "New Guitars". A short project by Pete Stride from the Lurkers and John Plain from the Boys and they made an album in 1980 New Guitar In Town. 'Laugh At Me' is a cover from Sonny Bono (first release in August 1965) and was released via Beggars Banquet as the album's sole single (I haven't heard the album, but it's supposed to be excellent)Two great PowerPoppies (oh no.. not again) of the very finest smiling at me, and fit seamlessly with the roaring blasts of the previous posts. You either listen or you will be fucked. ⚽🍺 Cheers!

- Great Thx to Nolti -

CLOCKWORK SOLDIERS - Wet Dreams EP 1984

Ahhh, there is nothing like a long, healthy sleep and a hearty coffee to greet the world with. I start today with the Clockwork Soldiers. An Oi! four piece from Leicester and they were formed late 1983 and consisted of Timo (vocals), Doc (guitars), Roche (bass), Penny (drums). Their only record is the three track Wet Dreams EP from 1984 on Rot Records, followed by two demos in 1984 and 1985. However in 1985 the band were tired ot the constant problems that appeared as soon they were going to perform live and fell apart. Vocalist Timo then went on to form the Oi! combo The Glory. A review by Jeff Bale Maximum Rock'N'Roll June 1984: "The title song is an hilarious trashing of the Everly Brothers classic All I Have To Do Is Dream, with altered X-rated lyrics. The flip contains one slow, tuneless Oi cut (In The Name Of Science) and a much better speedier number (Suicide). The production is absurdly muddy, and the B-side label has the wrong song order." I think he described the slab excellent and a decent production would indeed have been desirable... never mind, thousand times better as the junk on the radio or senselessly climbing mountains, right!

HEARTBREAKERS - One Track Mind EP 1977

After a long working day, now a classic and certainly no strangers for the most of you. "The Heartbreakers are an influential 1970s New York punk act formed by Johnny Thunders (guitar/vocals and principal songwriter) and Jerry Nolan (drums) after they quit the New York Dolls, along with Richard Hell (vocals/bass) who had just left Television. Several months after intially forming the band, the trio added rhythm guitarist Walter Lure (vocals/guitar). The band quickly became one of the most popular and well-known underground bands in New York City, headlining shows at CBGB, Mother's (located across from the Chelsea Hotel), and Max's Kansas City." This three song EP came out via Track Record and was taken from their only studio album L.A.M.F. and kickin' very well, including a live piece and a famous cover version of an oldie. I like it, and it's good to hear the old stuff again.

- Great Thx to Reinhard -

OPERATION GOMORRHA - Born In Sixty Four 7'' 1984

The following rare record was made by a Hamburg band which consisted of Marion (vocals), Jörg (guitar), Slaughter (bass), Michael (drums) and was released in a small edition via Gabba Gabba Hey Records. We're talkin' about Operation Gomorrha, a band which hardly left any traces and in the legendary Hall Of Fame of German punk bands rather a lower rank occupies. Is probably because their slab is spread over a small label and not much more recordings exist. But what the four deliver here is top notch, the title track is a catchy decent mid-tempo track with an excellent guitar (great solo) and driving rhythm and sung in English. The flip in German is a little anecdote about life as a uniformed folk hero in the former GDR. Born In Sixty Four is a damn cool record that doesn't have to hide and a real secret tip. Antesten und genießen!

X-PULSION - You Are Nothing But Schmucks 2017

Holy Stratocoster, it's time for musical delicacies in this theater. Transported from the shallows of dirty stinky cellars, full with empty beer cans, and to my astonishment: all of this pretty rough and pretty amateurish, but enjoyable. Stuff by X-Pulsion from Brussels, the direct successor of the defunct Belgian combo Chainsaw and formed circa 1977. The band consisted of Peter (vocals), Jerry (guitar), Michel (bass), Klaus (drums) and their only release was a split 7Inch with Streets, released 1978 via Romantik Records. They played a few local gigs in their short lifespan and it's amazing that after so many years some lost recordings are still showing up. Persistently pursuing an idea pays off. This loud goodie was made by Belgian Waffles Records, pressed in an edition of 50 copies and all songs are '78 demos & rehearsals from different cassette tapes (except B6 from Follies TV Broadcast February 1978) and comes with a decent twenty page booklet. Fuckin' Great Record!

- Great Thx to Fredrik -

THE CROOKS - Just Released 1980

Hailing from North Londen and this is the only full-length by the Crooks on Blueprint with fourteen PowerPop/Mod goodies. Originally formed in late 1977 by Dino (vocals/guitar/), Tim (guitar/vocals), Chris (bass), Micky (drums). Well, this is the kind of music that passed me by and I can't review a lot. The guys are apparently to be assigned to the Mod revival Hype from 1979/1980 and I can read a lot in the net that they didn't really make the breakthrough. Probably it was due to the label or the strong competition, I don't know, but what I hear on Just Released are consistently catchy songs with power and excellent melodies. And next to the album they released two singles which are included here as a bonus. If you are interested, you can read a short review of the album on allmusicI'm gradually becoming a friend of this sound and I don't wanna know, how many shiny 7Inches I missed.

AHEADS - Freedom Of Speech EP 1980

Rare self-produced debut EP from the Aheads, formed 1978 in Herdord by Andy (vocals), Bernd (guitars), Bernie (bass), Werner (drums), with four splendid tracks which not only me delighted, also a certain Mr. Walterbach, founder of the Aggressive Rockproduktionen label, because he put them with two songs on his first release, the great Soundtracks Zum Untergang compilation. Followed with their only album one year later. Musically not as hard as the other label mates, but with short melodic hymns Aheads played out their anger & emotions and belong for me to the most important German punk bands of that time. In 1997 another compilation with demos, the EP and album songs was excavated from Loud, Proud & Punk Records which is just as appealing. Great Stuff!

V/A - Powerpearls Vol.3 1998

Uhh, damn exciting match yesterday at noon with a well-deserved victory for the SGE, the Champions-League is within reach. Now to the announced killer. In the nineties a wave swam over us with unofficial compilations that came up with rare punk classics of the early wild days, the well-known and certainly the best of them are the Killed By Death and Bloodstains series. But there is another interesting third: the Powerpearls series. Just as brilliant and significant contribute to resurrecting lost 7Inch nuggets and getting in touch with bands that nobody or only a few know these days, and whose music kicking just as much as the snotty punk buddies. My focus was more on the first two's and I didn't even know PowerPop that time, but now I like this genre, makes me feel positive and radiant, and it's close rooted with punk and sounds charming and lovely either. There are ten Volumes of these available, most at expensive prices, some with colored vinyl. So keep an eye out for them, it's definitely worth.

V/A - Oi! Siamo Ancora Qui!! 1991

Welcome friends on this cool rainy Saturday, suitable for more interesting music. With the following compilation I am doing a favor to a friend who asked me to post this record, but first of all: it's not my rip and the quality is poor, what a shame. I wonder who is satisfied with something like that? Maybe someone has a better rip with scans for me? Anyway, I'll do it and there hasn't been anything from Italy here for a long time. This nice slab came via Havin' A Laugh Records and presents us fifteen solid Oi! tracks by fifteen bands and that good streetpunk created there is proven by relevant records that were released in the eighties. Energetic mid-tempo pieces how I know not any other way, spread a positive vibrations throughout and bring me in the right mood for the important match in an hour against Wolfsburg. Stay tuned in any case, after football follows a killer, promised!

1.La Gente Reale Non Muore Mai - ASOCIALE

DREIZACK - Großstadt-Nacht 12'' 1982

One more on this evening. This slab isn't punk either, but a well-known one for every fan of early German rock music. Dreizack is a new wave combo, I would say, from Düsseldorf originated from the German rock formation Sinclair and existed in the years 1982/83 and the formation consisted of Thomas (vocals/bass), Peter (guitar), Wolfgang (drums) and they only had one regular release with the single Großstadt-Nacht (via Welt-Rekord) which became a hit in the club scene over the years. Other titles had been written but never published. In 1992 the previous band, Sinclair, got together again for a few years with the original line-up and also had old Dreizack numbers in their program. The a-side is catchy and poppy with a solid guitar in a decent tempo, the flip 'Koma' doesn't stay in the ear immediately but is okay too.

TRIAL - s/t EP 1983

We are now enjoying a quiet start to the weekend with the following slab, a bit atypical for me but somehow I got stuck with the music and that's why Trial is waiting for your appreciated ears, an early eighties punk band from San Francisco with their debut 7Inch on Freak Records and we all know from there's comin' lots of great combos. Trial were John (vocals), Rip (guitars), Desmond (bass), Jason (drums) and they don't play the classic, fast, snotty sound, they tend to be calm and melancholy, difficult to describe. In 1986 they made their album Moments Of Collapse on Communications Syndicate and a few compilation appearances and that's it. Enjoy the evening and tomorrow the gaspedal will be kicked trough.

VOLKSWIDERSTAND - 1991... Noch Ist Zeit!

Thirty years ago, five gentlemen from Hamburg had the idea of recording an album with German punk classics, so I think "Aha, that could be interesting", and Volkswiderstand do it pretty well with steam and power on their only full length via We Bite Records. The musicians in charge were Edde & Matze (vocals), Rob & Ulf (guitars), Sven (bass), Carsten (drums) and their selection pimps the 'dusty' nuggets and shortly after the reunification it didn’t hurt to convey the feelings of the early days again. Most of the originals can also be found in this theater with a bit of searching. Three years later followed the Junge EP and then the band broke up. They were honored on four compilations and what remains: a furious, powerful, timeless and very good sound document has the band left for us, shoots me straight back to my younger days...

SLITAGE - Farbror Polisen EP 2016

New lost material from Slyngel Rekords, #013 and it's Slitage, Norrtälje's first punk band, formed early January 1977 and the Ramones and Damned ignited the spark and made them want to start making noise in their rehearsal room. The band consisted of Petta (vocals), John (guitar), Ted (bass), Micael (drums). They did some gigs in folk house in Norrtälje and a tour to Småland's Lessebo. In 1979, a demo was recorded in Uppsala with the help of members of the pop band Hansa Band. Among the songs was "Stoppa Travolta", a song that felt just right in a time when disco and pompous symphony rock was a great contrast to punk. "Fort Men Fel" is about pickpockets who always fussed and wanted to whip the shit out of the punks. "Farbror Polisen" is about the nice uncles from the law enforcement officers. In the fall of 1979, the band was disbanded but members continued to play in other bands such as Studio Sex, Cherness, Blues Drivers, Mannish Boys, Generals and President Gas. This three track killer EP contains recordings from this demo, released in green vinyl in an edition of 300 copies. It kicks! So, please, either take the plunge or stop teasing me.

SACKGASSE - Alles Klar?! EP 1986

Only record by Sackgasse from Duisburg which they published in an edition of 500 copies with four enjoyable tracks. The band was formed around the beginning of the 80s and consisted of Retzoi! (vocals), Schrammi (guitar), Titz (2nd guitar), Funky (bass), Hoscht (drums) and in their short lifespan they made besides the Single a tape Kohl Über Alles! probably before the slab was out, and you can find Sackgasse on a surprising number of compilations, including numerous cassettes, with songs from the demo or other sources. On vinyl I can offer you the excellent Fun's Not Dead slab from 1985 on More Fun Records. Further traces didn't leave the gentlemen, so they disappear into the dark silence of the calm deep ocean.

V/A - Punk Rock/New Wave '77 1978

I hope you have a pleasant Easter days and time for good music. Today a obscure release with mostly bands from the UK and on this compilation, which came out in Portugal via Pirate Dream Records in an edition of 400 copies, are only classics that saw the light of day as 7Inch at the end of the 70s. I bought the slab on my Antarctic vacation thirty years ago from a penguin near the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Stationafter long haggling, for a few dollars. You can surely imagine how amazed I was when I found such a rare record, nowadays only available at high prices, in this region and of course didn't hesitate for long. Well, sometimes I'm lucky too and today I present you the little anecdote and I'm sure you will like the stuff as well. Even though we exchanged addresses, I never met the penguin again, but it will stay in my memory forever. So friends, enjoy the good ole sound that still towers over many current records and I know that won't change.
