BIG BOYS & THE DICKS - Recorded Live @ Raul's Club 1980

Phew, December greets me with freezing temperatures and I am not a friend of the cold, grey season, Fuck Winter! This means I have to let it get hot and since the heating already contributes a part to this, follows now the other in form of this very rare split album by Rat Race Records with two great Texas bands: Big Boys & The Dicks. Both bands were part of the early Punk scene in Texas and spread their influence on the development of the genre in the USA. The record captures the raw energy and spirit of the bands during this time. The Big Boys are known for their mix of Punk, Funk & Hardcore, while the Dicks are known for their provocative lyrics and aggressive style. Both have tackled social and political issues and are highly regarded for their unconventional approaches. The record contains some of their best known songs and offers a glimpse into the bands' live intensive performances, which are often characterized by a passionate and energetic atmosphere. Recorded live at Raul's in Austin on September 19th & 20th, 1980. These recordings are not only a musical experience, but also an important historical document that perfectly underlines the creative explosion and emotions of the early eighties and the still young underground scene of that era. Superb!

BLACK FLAG - TV Party EP 1982

Before I dedicate myself to the Euro-League game of the SGE, a quick trip to California where we meet a well-known band that surely everyone should know and we come to the fourth EP by Black Flag which was self-produced and originally released by SST RecordsThere have been several variations on the release of the record. They include one released by SST Records, one as a split between SST and Unicorn Records, and another simply by Unicorn. All three versions have the same track listing. The title track is a satire of boredom, drinking and America's obsession with television; the original version was also released on the band's 1981 debut album Damaged. "TV Party" is considered an important contribution to the development of HardcorePunk and influenced many later bands. Black Flag themselves were one of the central figures of the Punk movement of the early Eighties and are one of the most important bands from the USA and the slab is a must listen. Enjoy the three songs and maybe the game afterwards!

THE ESTRANGED - The Subliminal Man 2010

This is the second record by Portland's The Estranged on Dirtnap Records and involved are Derek (vocals/bass), Mark (guitar/keyboards/vocals), Keith (drums), known for their unique mix of PostPunk, shoegaze, Sage-inspired Punk and experimental sounds. They continue their musical journey and show how they have evolved while maintaining their signature sound. Static Thoughts was a great debut and this beauty opens with an immediately immerses listeners in a dense, atmospheric soundscape. The combination of melancholic guitar riffs and hypnotic rhythms creates a haunting mood that runs throughout the album. The vocals are often layered, giving the nuggets an emotional depth that captivates the listener. They catch your ear with its driving beat and shimmering guitar sounds and the combination of fine melodies and introspective lyrics shows the band's talent for incorporating complex emotions into their music. The lyrics are well thought out and not at all naivepoetic and invite interpretation. They deal with themes such as identity, alienation and the search for meaning in a chaotic world. Sometimes addresses the protagonist’s inner conflict, while otherwise deals with the difficulties of interpersonal communication. The lyrical depth of the songs contributes to the overall effect of the album and makes it an experience that goes beyond the music. The production is clear and balanced, which gives the individual instruments and vocals space to unfold. The band has managed to find a balance between a powerful sound and a gloomy, almost ethereal atmosphere. The use of effects and sound layers contribute to the hypnotic quality of the record. Really an impressive album that embodies the bands artistic vision in an impressive way. With its mix of catchy melodies, profound lyrics and atmospheric sounds, the slab offers a captivating listening experience. The Estranged prove once again that they are one of the most innovative bands of their generation and set another milestone of Portland's Undergound. Brilliant Stuff!

LOOKOUTS! - Spy Rock Road & Other Stories 2015

Now that I'm home at the weekend and have nothing better to do, here's an excellent compilation and I'm quoting the band bio from the band's own homepage, I'm too drunk to write anything, just one thing, excellent material is on offer: "The Lookouts were a three piece that existed from 1985 to 1990 from Iron Peak, a remote rural mountain community outside Laytonville, California. Members were Larry (vocals/guitar), Kain (bass/vocals) and Tré (drums/vocals). Thirty years ago, long before there was such a thing as Gilman Street, Green Day, or the East Bay pop punk explosion, three guys got together in an off-the-grid hippie wilderness known as Spy Rock, at the heart of Northern California’s legendary Emerald Triangle. They hooked their amps up to their solar panels, made up a couple songs about living on the backside of nowhere, and The Lookouts were born. It would be the first time 12-year-old Tre Cool ever laid hands on a drumstick or a set of drums, but over the following five and a half years he would hone the skills that would see him headlining amphitheatres and stadiums, winning Grammy Awards, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with his second band, Green Day. Guitarist and singer Larry Livermore would go on to co-found Lookout Records, the indie label that introduced Green Day and many other bands to the world.

Together with bassist (and future forest ranger) Kain Kong, and with guest appearances by Operation Ivy’s Tim Armstrong and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, The Lookouts produced a legacy of two albums, two EPs, and several compilation tracks, the best of which are featured here. Also included is a track from The Lookouts’ very first demo tape, recorded in 1985, which features Tre singing backups in his as yet unbroken three-and-a-half-octave soprano.

One of the greatest (and, some say, worst) legacies of the Punk movement was the notion that anyone can be in a band. Even me, as it turned out. When I formed the Lookouts, I quickly became the laughingstock (I should amend that to “an even greater laughingstock”) of the remote mountain community where I was living at the time. Already well into my 30s, I was playing music (to use the term very loosely) with a 14 year old bassist who had never played bass before and a 12 year old drummer who had never laid hands on a drum set. The abuse wasn’t limited to the verbal variety, either; there was the matter of the legendary black eye I received when a local lunkhead tried to physically restrain us from playing at a town dance, a black eye which I wore semi-proudly (the other guys in the band used makeup to draw their own in solidarity) at our first record release party at Gilman Street the next night. The Lookouts, even several years down the road, were never noted primarily for their technical skill, but we did manage to get a good bit better. We never got a chance to tour, but we were privileged to play at some truly awesome shows, by far the most memorable being the last Operation Ivy show. Maybe even more important, we had the honor of being part of the Gilman Street phenomenon from pretty much the ground up. We first played at Gilman only a couple weeks after it opened, and our next to last show, opening for Bad Religion in June of 1990, was there as well. When we finally split up the next month, it wasn’t so much that we were tired of the band or each other. In fact we all felt as though we had finally hit our stride, and were capable of playing together as a pretty darn good band. But we were living in three widely separate places and it was next to impossible to get together for shows or even practice, so we reluctantly called it quits. Later that year, Tre was asked to join Green Day and started making a new kind of history. Since those days I’ve learned a lot more about music and played with a lot of other musicians, but your first band, like your first love, is always special beyond anything words can tell. No doubt we embarrassed ourselves many times while we were struggling to master our instruments and figure out what it meant to be in a band, but we were too dumb and too sincere to know it. We just kept on bashing away and howling at the moon, and by the time we were finished, well, we’d fashioned some of the best days of our lives." (Larry Livermore, homebase)

THE IDEALS - High Art! EP 1982

The Ideals were a cool three piece from Austin and active in the Eighties and the band consisted of Davey (vocals/guitars), Richard (vocals/bass), Arthur (drums). This is their debut EP with four nice goodies which were recorded Live At Raul's Club in Austin on 18. September 1980. Their style combined the rough elements of Punkrock with melodic hooks and it is fascinating how they mixed the local scene with their own influences and left a lasting impression. The Ideals' High Art! EP is a remarkable work that showcases their signature sound and lyrical themes well. Combining energetic riffs with catchy melodies, the EP reflects the social and personal issues that are typical of the band. The lyrics are often provocative and thought-provoking, while the music combines the raw energy with a modern twist. The sound quality is clear and powerful, which enhances the intensity of the three immensely. I appreciate the mix of nostalgic influences and fresh ideas that this little piece of wax offers. Overall, a good example of the Ideals' ability to combine their wild sound while addressing relevant topics. Fucking good!

GREG SAGE - Sacrifice (For Love) 1991

What does Monday need after a long, hard day at work? Either a hot date with an attractive lady or a decent musical ending to chill out.... of course, both is possible. Since unfortunately no rich woman has contacted me, I'll continue with part two of my intro and it's music at its finest, so let's go forward with the second and final solo album by Wipers frontman Greg Sage on Restless Records and this is a very good alternativeThe album has ten refreshing songs with introspective lyrics in the typically melancholic sound, for which the protagonist is known for his unique style. On Sacrifice (For Love) he shows his ability to combine emotional depth and musical diversity and has all the spirit & mood that a good song needs. They often deal with themes such as love, loss and personal struggles, alarmed passion and quiet frustration. The production of the album is characteristic of Sage's approach, with a focus on atmospheric sounds and haunting melodies. It is a work that will appeal to fans of both Sage and the Wipers, and is one more example as an important release in his solo catalog. A really great experience and not at all intrusive!

PROSECUTORS - I've Got A Message EP 1980

Founded in Milwaukee, the Prosecutors were four talented musicians who brilliantly embodied the rough and rebellious spirit beneath this sleeping city in their few songs. Their only EP was self-released in 1980 and is an excellent example of the musical and thematic range of the Prosecutors. We hear a small collection of three songs that are nice variable and captivating with their fast, melodic & aggressive rhythms and their sharp lyrics (social injustice, political corruption & personal freedom). Critics for I've Got A Message were mostly positive. Reviewers praised the record for its authenticity and the band's ability to convey powerful messages through their music, plus the raw energy and pristine production were seen as the perfect embodiment of the D.I.Y. spirit. Useless info at the end: "Track one and two were recorded at Cornerstone Studio, Milwaukee, track three is "live from a cassette tape," recorded at Milwaukee venue The Starship. Jeff Shapiro is credited as the drummer on the backcover, but the insert indicates that James D. Tessier played drums on 'I've Got A Message' & 'Dead Man' (corroborated in the oral history book "Brick Through The Window") and Kenny Baldwin (named as "Starship Proprietor") on 'Prosecution Rests'. Intense & passionate, like a red sweet Bordeaux.

BAGS - Survive 7'' 1978

The Bags (also known as Bags or Alice Bag Band) were an American band formed in 1977, one of the first generation of Punk combos to emerge from Los Angeles. Formed by Alicia Armendariz & Patricia Morrison, who had met while waiting in line to see Elton John guest on Cher. The two became fast friends and eventually decided to form a band called Femme Fatale. Kim Fowley heard about their band and asked the members to audition for Venus & The Razorblades, Fowley's next attempt at creating a band after the Runaways had left him. Femme Fatale eventually morphed into a new band, which became Bags. They took the band's name and their stage names "Alice Bag" and "Pat Bag" from a gimmick that the band used during early performances where they performed with grocery bags over their heads (the practice did not last, in part due to an incident where Darby Crash of the Germs got on stage and ripped the bag off Alice's head). Alice Bag was the vocalist and Pat Bag played bass, and the rest of the band comprised guitar players Craig Lee and Rob Ritter, and Terry Graham on drums. The Bags played their first concert at The Masque on September 10, 1977. Their concerts were often accompanied by disorderly scenes, including altercations with celebrities, such as one between singer Tom Waits and drummer Nicky Beat at The Troubadour. In 1978, they released their only record, a single called 'Survive' which was released by independent record label Dangerhouse Records. 'We Don't Need The English' was included on the Yes L.A. Compilation (1979) released by the same label.

DESCENDENTS & CIRCLE JERKS - Split EP 2024

All re-upp requests are done and now it's time for something new: The 2024 split EP between legendary bands Descendents & Circle Jerks is an exciting musical event that will make the hearts of yours beating faster. Both bands not only have their roots in 1980s Californian Punk, but also have had an unwavering influence on the West Coast underground scene in the decades that followed. This fucking 7Inch brings the two giants together and offers a fresh, energetic collection of tracks that will delight both old and new fans. The slab consists five songs and the Descendents open with their typical melodic sound that is immediately catchy. Their first track shows the characteristic mix of catchy melodies and powerful guitar riffs as we know it. Fast, aggressive that perfectly captures the band's dynamic.

The Circle Jerks counter with their rougher, more boisterous style. Keith Morris's distinctive voice and driving instrumentation ensure that the song immediately invites you to sing along. This killer is a must-have for any Punkrocker and I was really surprised about this goodie, I only came across it by chance, which combines two of the genre's most influential combos and offers a perfect blend of energy and social relevance. The EP not only shows the musical evolution of both bands, but also their ability to hold their own in the ever-changing music landscape. With catchy melodies and haunting lyrics, this release is a breath of fresh air and proof that both are still alive. An absolute highlight for any record Collection! Came in different colors and strictly limited by Trust Records, Superb!!

LARD - Pure Chewing Satisfaction 1997

We're soon in Leverkusen, but first a short trip across the Atlantic where we'll get a taste of Lard's second and final album Pure Chewing Satisfaction and like its predecessor, its an outstanding record that remarkably captures the essence of powerful and innovative music. Even at first listen, it is clear that these are true masters of their craft who know how to implement their musical vision with precision and passion. The production of the album is excellent and every instrument shine in all its glory. The guitars are concise and haunting, the bass is powerful and deep, and the drums drive the songs forward with impressive energy and precision. Each track is perfectly mixed so that the soundscape remains clear and dynamic. A special highlight of this fucking slab is the versatility of the songs. Lard demonstrates an impressive range of musical styles and influences here. Whether aggressive, fast tracks or melodic, atmospheric pieces - each song has its own character and yet fits seamlessly into the overall picture of the album. The lyrics are profound and invite the listener to engage more deeply with the content. They offer a mixture of social commentary and personal reflections that make you think. Jello's expressive voice gives the songs additional depth and authenticity, which further enhances the emotional content of the music. Overall, Pure Chewing Satisfaction is a record that should not be missing from any music collection. It offers first-class dynamic sound and a thrilling listening experience that stays in the memory for a long time. A clear recommendation for anyone looking for high-quality and varied music.
Fucking Great Stuff!

V/A - 14 Years Ago [Ex-WildDevilRules Compilation] 2010

This bloody Fucker, as the title suggests, is created when my old blog was still active and that time I posted it under a different name, now fourteen years later I've changed a few songs and think it's become a bit better (the back cover is still the old). There were too many D-bands on it Compilation what I had already forgotten is, there are a lot of cover versions of my favorite D-Punk band from Mönchengladbach on it. True followers of this Blog know which combo I'm talking about, but the name isn't mentioned. Those who guess it will get a washing machine for free, hehe..... Most of the songs were released in the Eighties and pressed on rare various Compis and 7Inches and all are fucking cool! It is a speciality of mine to immortalize the best of them on such useless crap that you then listen to in the car, train, plane or wherever to boost your self-confidence. Well, at least that's my reason for creating such musical delights, no profit, no self-indulgence, only for the passion of Punkrock, the attitude to life, and that's why I'm happy to share it with you. So dear ones, my plane leaves in four hours and I hope, I come back. DESCENDENTS - Milo Goes To College 1982

Let's stay in the classics category and that includes the fucking great debut of the Descendents on New Alliance Records which hit the local record stores in 1982. Wiki says: "The album's mix of fast and aggressive HardcorePunk with melody and semi-ironic love songs led to it being considered one of the most significant albums of the early 1980s southern California Hardcore movement. In the decades since its release, it has received highly positive reviews and is now considered among the most noteworthy and important Punk albums by several publications. Milo Goes to College has been cited as influential and a favorite by several notable artists and musicians." Well, that may be true, I say: this is a terrific fifteen song power package with no failures and as pleasant as a summer day like today. And Milo's voice is absolutely fantastic, the subtle rough undertone has so much efficiency and gives the songs their snotty charm and the musicians carry it with their excellent interplayTogether with their second masterpiece I Don't Want To Grow Up, the Descendents have really created a new PopPunk style without losing any of their hardness and dirt. By the way, why I'm choosing these boys today? I've just ripped the new split EP that they released with the Circle Jerks and I only came across it by chance. Both bands cover each other's songs. Brilliant 7Inch, in limited editions in different colors. If you won't be a loser, hurry up.

RKL - Keep Laughing 1985

One year after their first EP, which caused a lot of attention and is now an absolutely sought-after item, RKL soon recorded and released their first full-length album, Keep Laughing on Mystic Records in 1985 with Dan Sites once again providing artwork. This release included classic RKL tracks "Think Positive" (often played live as "Drink Positive"), "Ded Teds", and "Pothead" and has been named as one of the best SkatePunk records of all time. I'm not much a Skatepunk expert, but the few bands I know come all from the States and all do a great job for me, so I can safely confirm that this piece of vinyl with its eleven smashers is definitely up at the top with its speedy, striking, buzzing, sharp, dynamic and powerful Hardcore sound.

V/A - 805 21 F 2xEP 1995

First post in August brings us a brilliant Compilation from Spock Productions and 500 copies of these two 45's were pressed and this release was a benefit for "Secours Populaire Français", a non profit organization which has been fighting against povertyall around the world since the end of World War II, and still is. I love these kind of records with international bands because, on the one hand, you can usually only hear them on these kind of Compilations and, on the other hand, I like to feel the vibes of these countries. And that's what happens here with twelve really good, varied songs. And I guess that's also the passion of the small label that has unfortunately only released about a dozen 7Inches, but each one is certainly a real gem. Well, it was fun to digitize them and there will be more material at the weekend, so stay tuned.

1.Stupid Story - D MAISONS
2.You & I - TOSHIYUKI HIRAOKA
3.Sun Cold Day - F.V.K.
4.Collari - CRUNCH

AGENT ORANGE - s/t EP 1980

The following band, who wrote an immortal classic with their debut EP, deserves definitely a fucking gold medal. I'm talking about BLOODSTAINS. Part of this 7Inch and a song like an orgasm: short, intense and lasting. The inspiration for the famous and brilliant bootleg Compilation series from the Nineties, which are now highly sought after and highly traded, and each one is a real gem. And I still enjoy listening to it because the trio, because they also one of my favorite bands. But the other two songs, America & Bored Of You, are also masterpieces and their content describes the current situation exactly forty years later and makes me feel young again. Nothing has changed! Small Bio: "Orange County Punk combo Agent Orange were the pioneers of surf Punk, melding the guitar figures of classic surf music with the fast-and-loud attack of dynamic Hardcore/Punkrock, and they became one of the truly enduring bands in the West Coast Punk community. Formed in 1979 by guitarist/vocalist Mike and completed by James (bass) and Scott (drums), they became one of the leading acts in West Coast Punk with the release of the awesome Bloodstains record in 1980, which received extensive radio support from iconic DJ Rodney Bingenheimer. The group's debut album, -Living In Darkness- (1981), became a touchstone in the skate Punk underground, and -This Is The Voice- (1986) found them adding some polish to their sound without robbing their music of its intensity. The group's recording activities dropped off in the mid-'90s after the release of third album -Virtually Indestructible- (1996), but Palm kept Agent Orange busy as a live act well into the 2010s, touring the world (look) and pleasing fans despite numerous lineup changes." (Mark Deming) Enough of the unnecessary words, give yourself the stuff, buy the record and enjoy life, hooray!

GANG GREEN - Another Wasted Night 1986

Time for a classic and we move to Boston and meet Gang Greenfounded 1980 by Chris (vocals/guitar), Bill (bass) and Mike (drums) and broke up three years later. Chris reformed the band the following year, and they experienced numerous line-up changes until its dissolution for the second time in 1992. Doherty has been the band's only constant member and has kept Gang Green active from 2005 onwards. Unfortunately, the slab had to leave my collection many years ago due to financial problems and all I have left are the digital CD versions that were donated to me by a friend. Eight superb songs, each a killer, and I don't need to say more, read the reviews and the band's history online. I'm going to rip another record now and not drink a Bud. Original via Taang! Records, re-released numerous times.

V/A - Attack Is Now Suicide 1988

A short appearance from me and in my mind is the next record, a fucking hot Compilation of the late Eighties and released in 1988 by the small but equally important German label Double A Records in collaboration with Americans from Phantom Records and is chock full of superb international Hardcore/Punk material with some exclusive highlights. US.Distress opens the musical ecstasy with an fucking energetic track and so it happens one after the other, short and intense songs (especially the Vatican Commandos & Dusk is a brilliant example with an unusual title and a rough sound and Dresden 45 contributes the longest track, which bears the band's name and creates a dark atmosphere). This beauty offers a diverse mix of aggressive and experimental sounds. Although not all tracks are equally strong, Attack Is Now Suicide is an interesting contemporary document of the Hardcore & Punk scene around the world of the late 1980s. The album also contains a folded insert with band photos and song lyrics which is not included within.

1.Who Possesses You? - U.S. DISTRESS
2.British Troops In Cyprus - SIC BOY FEDERATION
3.Housewives On Valium - VATICAN COMMANDOS & DUSK
4.Fjernsyn - O.H.M.
5.Bimbirimbirimbam - S.H. DRAUMUR
6.Werewolf's Life - FEAR ITSELF
7.Intolerance 2:24 - I DENY
8.When You've Got The Choice - DAWN OF LIBERTY
9.Dresden 45 - DRESDEN 45
10.Korruption - EXTREM
11.Don't Waste Your Time - COLLAPS
12.Paralized - RANCID DECAY
13.Nor & Far - RAPED TEENAGERS
14.Russia Nuked Themselves - STIKKY

BAD RELIGION - No Control 1989

Now another classic fucker from the great wide ocean of the outsider-league and we're talkin' bout Bad Religion with their fourth record and it's not difficult to write a positive review. If you like Suffer you will also like No Control and the Eighties were the best time for Bad Religion from Los Angeles in my opinion. It's stylistically faster than its predecessor, owing more to HardcorePunk. Additionally, it was the bands first album not to feature a line-up change from the previous one. "This record simply and forcefully continue the shift, delivering a pummel of melodic songwriting made sharp by Greg Graffin's populist cynicism and the stinging barbs of a twin-guitar strike." (Johnny Loftus) A sentence that sums up fifteen songs in a short, fitting way and it's no wonder this piece of wax has received generally favorable reviews in the years since its initial release and I always enjoy listening to the aggressive and expressive pieces, that helps me survive, you know (note: this is an old vinyl rip in 192kBit/s but kicks excellent) Today's a long strawberry soccer day - I'll be back!

THE DICKIES - Stukas Over Disneyland 1983

An enjoyable and recommended listen is the third mini album by the Dickies which was released after a four-year silence by PVC Records with eight wonderful nuggets. I quote a perfect review: the Dickies first vinyl in almost four years ranks up there near their previous funnypunk triumphs. Most of the eight songs here veer toward amphetamine pop, with irresistible layered choruses to boot, but the highlights include the poppish “Rosemary,” “She’s a Hunchback,” and an incredibly fast cover of LED ZEP’s “Communication Breakdown.” Buoyant and entertaining as hell! (Steve Spinali, MRR #12 • March 1984) I undoubtedly go along with that and start this warm day off, which will follow with a second post shortly. Re-upps are also finished if anyone asks.

D.I. - Horse Bites Dog Cries 1985

Second album by this California combo D.I. which was released via Reject and has been regarded by some music critics as the bands best album. and I guess it's probably close to that. I only know this one and the songs have energy and can absolutely be considered as an entertaining pleasure. A bit info from wikiDue to a typo on the album itself, many fans believe that it was released in 1985, but this appears to be false because its release was delayed until 1986 to avoid confusion with the band's then-current album Ancient Artifacts. Horse Bites Dog Cries was the final album featuring the Agnew brothers (Rikk & Alfie) and drummer John Knight (until his return on 1994's State Of Shock). Fact is, they packed twelve superbly strong pieces on this record that bring joy and ensure a heated half hour.
