CLOWN - s/t 7'' 1983

In keeping with my physical condition follows now a small, subtle but interesting work, and there may have been few published records of the Clowns' musical wanderings in the Eighies, but their mark remained and remains indelible on the Greek underground music scene. Founded in 1981, the band consisted of Yannis (vocals), Elias (guitar), Poupeta (keyboards) and Vagelis (drums), and of more artistically (and not purely musically) restless spirits who made it through their intelligent compositions, their special lyrical inspirations and their overall aesthetic ethos have managed to occupy a special place in the domestic alternative music reality. Both songs on this beautiful 7Inch are based on those conscious, artistic, expressive digressions and move mainly in dark tones. They're two of the era's finest sonic moments, while also highlighting the shame of the band's lack of further released work. In particular, these tracks combine all the necessary components to form two catchy blends of intellectual Post-Punk/New Wave demonstrations. What remains: a nice release by a remarkable group that disappeared so ingloriously without meaning, but in 2012 came a re-issue via Eirkti in a limited edition of 400 hand-numbered copies. They are even featured on some Compilations. Back to bed and get quick healthy.

NUCLEAR WINTER - s/t 12'' 1997

Finally Saturday and finally time to post again. It's simply not possible for me to find time here after a tiring day at work during the week, so stay tuned anyway. Today now a Crust Trash Metal combo from Athens which formed in 1995 and disbanded in 2003 and later eventually turned into Dead Congregation. The band consisted of Anastasis (vocals), Kostas (guitar), Army (bass), Vagelis (drums) and this is their only release which came first as CD on Live Records, re-released as 12Inch on Necroterror Records/Rusted Lock in a limited edition of 300 copies. Such music doesn't affect me as much these days, that was my world fourty years ago, but Πυρηνικός Χειμώνας brings me together surprisingly well and their sound isn't 'crust' as people describe it. Check it out and you'll see it's not strenuous at all.

COLD I - Cliff Flowers 2018

Now I want to introduce you to an interesting Greek band called Cold I and this four piece plays a catchy Eighties Post-Punk & Dark Wave sound. Founded 2015 in Athens by Fotis (vocals), Vostron (guitar), Mitsos (bass) and Christos (drums). Άνθη Γκρεμού (Cliff Flowers) is already their second album which was released via Bat-Cave Productions and has six melodic and atmospheric highlights to offer. I can really say, that their music transforms all your stress and anger into positive energy, at least that's how I feel, and it's just nice to listen to. Although their noises are very melancholic and dark, but it's the perfect sound to calm down, collect yourself, reset and gain new momentum. Just stop and think, take a look at the world and yourself and ask, if all of this is okay. That's what I do with such stress-free music. Well, all of us have shit on our legs and need an outlet to shake that off, Cold I is an excellent help for that. Try them, it's perfect when you need a holiday from yourself and check out their other records, the last one came out this year and I hope they stay with us for a while. Cheers & have a nice Sunday!

ANTI... & SOCIAL WASTE - Split LP 1990

Last post and then is wdthtc closed for fourteen days but I leave with an amazing record (1000 copies) from Wipe Out! Records with two great greek bands. Short Info: "Coming from the ashes of PPF, a group formed at the end of 1981 and with only one concert to its credit (Ilioupoli, 1982), ANTI... presented their work for the first time in 1985 at music club Pigasos. The group consisted of Kostas (vocals/keyboards), Mimis (bass), Kostas (keyboards) and a drum machine (which the band named Manolis). They took their name when Agelidis tried to write the name of Anti-Nowhere League in the back of his jacket, but he left no space for the other words except ANTI." The four impress with their electronically driving sound and are definitely in the upper league and can confidently keep up with the English and French Synth-Punk challenge, and the bar is already high there. No cheap copies, five authentic goodies with power and passion! The other side is occupied by Κοινωνικά Απόβλητα (Social Waste), a short-lived Hardcore quartet from Athens, founded 1988 by Dina (vocals), Antonis (guitars), Yiannis (bass), Yiannis K. (drums). The other vinyl appearance was 1989 at the Retous Metamodernus! EP Compilation where they three songs contributed. Musically, they are at home with ponderous, guitar-heavy sounds; in my opinion, their sound accompanies a slightly melancholic mood, which is unexpectedly wiped away by short, excellent Hardcore attacks. Amazingly awesome stuff! They create effortlessly walking the fine line between the two emotions, and guiding you through the vale of tears to kick your ass the next time. They disbanded in 1990. - Unfortunately, both haven't released many records, which I think is a shame because both are Erste Sahne.

ARNAKIA - Στο Στόμα Του Λύκου 1993

A beautiful day ends with the travel documents that arrived by post today, and I want to announce where we are going with the following slab and I found some infos for you: "This album is a landmark in the Greek underground scene. An unsurpassed and unique record that to this day when you listen to it you understand its value. The lyrics are mostly pessimistic and dark and show how much they were influenced by the Darkwave scene of the time. Aρνάκια (transliterated and commonly known as Arnakia) were a three piece that started 1984 in Athens. They played concerts in many well-known clubs and venues (such as Pegasus and Scarecrow). The also participated in protest concerts, and on the famous Anti-Death Recipe Compilation from 1986. As a three member band, Dimitris (vocals/bass), Charis (guitars), Antonis (drums), they release their first record titled In The Mouth Of The Wolf at the end of 1993 via Wipe Out Records. The album features eight melodic nuggets with strong lyrical content and a powerful Punkrock-influenced sound, characterized by dynamic guitars. In October 1996, and while recording their second, self-titled record, their drummer Antonis died due to a heart condition that he had from birth. They disbanded in 1999." Very catchy & pleasant music like a delicious drink, Cheers!

V/A - Συνταγή Αντί Θανάτου 1986

Interesting Greek new wave Compilation on FM Records and I hope the translation of the songs is somewhat accurate. The Anti-Death Recipe features eight bands that gained a little notoriety in Hellas in the Eighties and some released a single or even an album. Was sent to me by a stranger a long time ago and I found the slab on the hard drive and listened to it, didn't even know what kind of stuff was on it, but here it is now. Musically, we listen to solid melodic catchy New Wave sound with nice electro vibes plus guitar power, although not every title meets my taste, but all is audible. 2013 re-released via B-Otherside in partially limited colored vinyl. Discover!

1.Orchestra Rehearsal - CLOWN
2.Against - ALTERNATING
3.Symbols And... - BUTTONHOLES S.A.
4.Rusty Solitude - SCORIA
5.Calypso - MESS
6.No Chance - ARNAKIA
7.All Are Ghosts - ARNAKIA
8.Stop Talking About Death - ANTI...

FILM NOIR - Never Ending Dream 1986

A day of rest without a computer is a real relaxation and today I'm fully back, because the important match versus Mainz starts in good six hoursNow to a band that didn't much leave behind, but whose music shouldn't be forgotten: Film Noir, a new wave band from Athens and formed circa 1985 and one year later they released their debut mini-album Never Ending Dream on the essential Wipe Out Records label and it was the label's third release and the line-up consisted of: Maria (vocals), Costas (guitars/keyboards/vocals), Constantinos (bass), Vassilis (keyboards) and Spyros (drums). In 1987 Maria leaves the band in order to pursue a modeling career in Australia. 1990 the band released their second and final album entitled Portrait Of A Child via Aural Art Music Productions and the main vocals was done by Costas Sokialis. After this release the band disappeared. Unfortunately in 1996 Maria dies of cancer and the world has lost another beautiful voice which she impressively demonstrates on the six wonderful and darkly atmospheric songs. I think a woman's voice goes better with melodies like this, I listen more closely and float faster into my fantasy world, I hope, you do as well. In 2013 Eirkti re-released the debut with an extra 7Inch. Before I continue, I cycle to the farmer and get fresh strawberries.

SOUTH OF NO NORTH - Fell Frozen 1986

South Of No North was one of the first true darkwave bands to emerge in Greece and consisted of Andreas (vocals), Michalis (guitars), George (bass), Fivos (drums), George (keyboard) and when Charles Bukowski wrote South Of No North, he didn’t know that an Athenian dark wave band would use his title as their band name in November 1983. They had their first gig at Grava’s High School in 1984 with the bands Metro Decay, Villa 21, Yell-O-Yell and Art Of Parties, all label-mates in Creep Records. Mostly influenced by bands such as Japan, Bauhaus and Joy Division, they covered a dark music spectre which was made obvious by their only video shot in their rehearsing studio (check “Baby Steps To A New Era, Vol.II”).

Their gigs were very rare, considering the existing live clubs of those years, but this didn’t stop Creep Records from signing them up to release the first Greek dark wave album in history. “Lacrimae Christi”, their debut, was recorded during September 1984 and was released April 1985. New wave and dark wave took over in the Greek underground. It was easy to attend to some small gig and see the Headleaders in a bar called “Blue Note” (later called “Masswell”) near Kipseli Square, which was territorial South Of No North’s area. This bar had one of the first VCRs in Athens, playing music vids of foreign new wave bands. Punks like the band Ex-Humans were also hanging around. Actually, Fivos, Ex-Human’s drummer, was also playing with South Of No North, as well. The band used Edgar Alan Poe’s poem “Anabell Lee” for one of their songs in their second album, “Fell Frozen” (which was the last release of Creep Records). During the following years there were a few changes in their line up as two keyboard players were added, which pushed their style away from the guitar-oriented sound. In 1989 they opened for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at Rodon Club and released the album “South Of No North” reaching the peak of their career with their most successful song, “Sha La La”. One year later they parted ways after a concert with Last Drive and Villa 21. Their last album, a compilation called “Rajah”, was released in 1992 featuring material taken from their past albums. Rumor has it that the band had a new album recorded, which was never released. Later, some of them formed the band Rock Xerox. In 2003 they had a reunion show for the Elfentanz Festival, in Gagarin 205 Club.

CHAOS GENERATION - Requiem 1989

Three years after their great debut record Athens Chaos Generation made a fantastic successor on Di Di Music with eleven delicious which translates to requiem but the songs are anything but bleak. With this album, they entered a prominent position in the underground scene of every punk respected fan. In 1989 they released the second and last album entitled Requiem. Enriched with fresh influences from their new members, they are now experimenting with a more metallic sound and the difference was obvious from the previous album. The melodic vocals of the first album were replaced by aggressive ones and the sound is more punk which is influenced by the metal scene without changing the dynamic. A. Ambrazis (bass) left the group and Alexis Aliferis came, as well as Dimitris Pappas as second guitar. In the same year the band disbanded. Throughout their course they gave many live gigs mainly in Athens and in 1996 their two albums were re-released along with additional unreleased tracks via Wipe Out Records on CD and a limited number of double vinyl. I can only say that today was a formative one (in a negative sense) and the music of the Athenians is now just right for me. Listen!

CHAIN CULT - Demo 2018

Something exciting new is coming from Athens and the three members; Jason (vocals/bass), Dino (guitars) and Vangelis (drums) are Chain Cult. These guys released their powerful demo as tape and also as 10'' via the London label La Vida Es Un Mus. Their post punk is anthemic, militant and idealistic, putting music to a very dark and bleak time and place with a lot of groove and interesting lyrics. Another single followed and recently their passionate first album Shallow Grave was released. I am extreme impressed of their sound and it is by far the best new combo that I have heard in the past two years. I strongly advise you to keep an eye out for gigs and other records and I hope, they stay in the music world for a long time. You can find out more about the boys in a short interview by Obsessionist.

MAGIC DE SPELL - Kiss The Mirror 1984

Second album by Athens Magic De Spell on Music-Box and they transitioning from their early new wave/post punk influences to more synth-oriented sound. Let me quote some info from the re-release on Geheimnis Records in 2016: the album was released by the same label that had released their first album A Body In A Snare. Their association with a stable record company gave them the confidence to develop and aim for higher standards in music composition. From the end of 1982 until the time "Kiss The Mirror" was released in early 1984, they were performing on a regular basis. Their busy live schedule, in addition to the hours that they had spent the previous year (1982) in the studio recording their debut album, had boosted their self-confidence and molded them into a tight and efficient musical unit. To crown it all, at the end of 1983 they entered Mastersound Studios and with the help of Chris Manolitsis as their sound-engineer, they recorded their second and, for many music journalists, most complete, mature and intimate album of their career. Elias Aslanoglou sounded more confident than ever before. George Scarlatos displayed his skill at playing some very innovative bass lines. Theodore Vlahakis held down the rhythm-section with some impressive percussion, while Thanassis Scarlatos and Yannis Rodites (who joined the band by mid 1983) created some simple but impeccable melodies on synthesizers, piano and keyboards. I added three songs from their third LP so that fourteen unusual synths will delight your eavesdroppers.

V/A - Διατάραξη Κοινής Ησυχίας 1984

When I got this file I was totally happy because a) I love this record and b) I had a terrible rip - Jetzt Nicht Mehr! From almost all bands is at least one slab in the blogMusically an interesting mix between punk, new wave & solid rock (Hardcore, as discogs writes, none). But I like to quote the following words: Fantastic Greek compilation, compiled by the founder of Enigma Records, originally released in September 20th, 1984. It contains versions of songs by six Greek bands, with two tracks each, that remained unreleased and unavailable anywhere else. It had huge influence on the scene and today it is considered a classic of that era. For the majority of the participating bands it was their first step in recording, something of great importance, because punk of that era was mostly DIY and remained un-recorded in a considerable amount. Great music from a beautiful country steeped in history.

1.Nightmare - ADIEXODO
2.Isolation - ADIEXODO
3.Cutting Light - EX-HUMANS
4.Slow Suicide - EX-HUMANS
5.Epileptic Snoring - CHAOS GENERATION
6.Bastardocracy - CHAOS GENERATION
7.In This City - GROVER
8.Monotonia - GROVER
9.Greeks - PANX ROMANA
10.Athena - PANX ROMANA
11.Right To Live - STRESS
12.Anxiety - STRESS

- Great Thx to Fredrik -

NAUSEA - Ευρωπαϊκή Αναγέννηση 1992

Normally I watch Bundesliga at this time but this weekend is not so let's come to another rare record from my favorite holiday country and this little nugget was released via Greek Athanati Levendia Productions and it's the debut by Naftia (Ναυτία, Greek for Nausea), a four piece from Thessaloniki, and were formed 1988 by Vaggelis (vocals/bass), Yiannis & Hristos (vocals/guitars), Sonia (vocals/drums). A bit info: "This band has absolutely nothing to do with what went before or what follows. From angry citizens and with many changes in their compositions, Nausea saw punk as a way of conveying their messages and claiming their ideas. Keep away from any commercialization, no affiliation with companies, even independent ones, from music movers, music producers, concert venues or tickets to them. Unique in their authenticity with a strong and faithful faith and a non-negotiable ideology.

They immediately become the most important representatives of anarchopunk in Greece. Leading the way in setting up the Thessaloniki D.I.Y. on stage, they call bands from all over Europe. With double vocals by man and woman, lusty lyrics, animal rights, sexism, globalization, extreme hardcore as successful as Conflict.

They tour Europe and release the live Sex Cartridge, Drugs And Greek Salad. After another cassette of Sweet Secret Of Life comes their album European Renaissance. Manifesto tray with no payroll and direct hit to the snail. In 1994 comes a split LP with the German Graue Zellen entitled The Nautical Kinky Horror Show which also features an old track of Out of Control Mother of Morph. The band broke up in the mid 1990's." CHAOS GENERATION -s/t LP 1986

Now it's not hard to guess where I'm going this year and in four hours I'm in the plane so I leave you with this fantastic band and here is the full bio: In April 1982 in Athens, three friends: Thodoris (Drums), Nikos (Bass) and his cousin also Nikos (Guitar & Vocals) formed a band named Anti-Culture influenced by Punk/New Wave with political lyrics. In winter 1983 Nikos left the band. Then Costas (Guitar/Vocals) and Mars (Vocals) joined. The band renamed to Chaos Generation and became part of the early Punk scene in Athens.

On 7.4.1983 they gave a live performance @ Sofita Club in Plaka with Ex-Humans & in October they also performed live @ Anemoni Cinema in Agia Paraskeui with Adiexodo atthat time the changed their name to CHAOS GENERATION. Before the end of the year they released along with Adiexodo the split tape "Dead End & Chaos Generation Wish You Good Appetite!" In 1984 Nikos and Mars left the band, Akis (Bass & Vocals) and Dimitris (Vocals) accordingly took their place. In Spring they got singed by Enigma Records and in July they recorded two tracks and participated to the first Greek Punk compilation, the legendary: "Disturbing The Peace" 1985 they performed a live @ Chevrolet Pub in Ioannina and in the same year with Adiexodo @ Anesis Cinema in Agrinio, the second live was recorded and distributed hand to hand through bands friends, as split tape titled "Chaos Generation & Dead End Wish You Happy Easter!"

In the early 1986 Dimitris leave the band and ?ikos became front-man of the band, it was then when they signed a one year contract with the label Right Way witch later renamed to DiDi Music, by the summer they released the self-titled debut album but the 1st press was shortly removed from the market due to bad sound an replased by a 2nd press. By autumn Akis leave the band to play bass for Parkinson Square in France, Dimitris and Alexis came in and bring new influences, the second guitar gave more volume to the audible outcome, their style went off the Punk clichés with more poetic lyrics referring to inner search of human political stance. In June 22nd they played live with Moot Point, Grover and Out Of Control @ Theatro Dasous/Thessaloniki and in November they supported The Ex & The Shrubs from Holland @ the Club 22 Autokinisi/Athens.

In winter 1987 Theodore (Drums), Alexis (Bass), Dimitris (Guitar/Vocals), Costas (Guitar/Vocals) started recording new material and in February 1988 they supported for two live shows The EX @ the Rodon Club in Athens, and finally on Feb 20th their last live performance @ 127 db Club/Eksarxeia. By the end of Februray 1989 their second and last album Requiem was released by DiDi Music and then they broke up the same year! They performed many live gigs all over Greece, drawing alternative & anti-government audiences.

The words of the front cover is written by Akis: Thirteen Days, Thirteen Nights, and Colors Become Long-Departed Figures. Out of sight, tears flowed, and cold stones built a house with no windows, a home for the mind's lonely dance. Why should I care about the winter outside of my home? But someone freezes outside my door. And I kill him all the time, cut it, cut it. But he smiles at me, shows me a fire, invites me to go with them and dance with them.....

Enjoy the music and stay decent!

They released this full-length album and just before they disbanded in 1999 a last 7Inch with three goodies via Fes Ulopas Records in an edition of 300. The band consisted of Alexis (vocals + guitar), Eleftheria (vocals), Stephanos (bass) and Christos (drums)Twelve catchy mid-tempo böller with female/male vocals and I already know today where I spend my holidays this year :)

EX HUMANS - Ανώφελη Επιβίωση 1984

Saturday is my favorite weekday and in six weeks I finally have holidays, guess where I'm going? George-Havoc-Alevaras (vocals/guitar) Yannis Trumbetas (bass) and Fivos Pergaliotis (drums) formed Ex Humans in September 1982 in Athens and after a demo on Bluurg Tapes they released their only album on Enigma Records and this ten track slab is a damn h-bomb, an excellent harmonious teamwork of all three, great distorted guitar, driving bass line and variable drums, all in Greek and lyrics with a sociopolitical and anti-authoritarian verse. The Ex Humans were among the pioneers of the punk scene in Greece for their time, and along with other bands such as Stress, Panx Romana, Magic De Spell, were the causes of this scene, not accidentally considered as a band legend of the Greek punk scene, they disbanded in 1985. Awesome Stuff!

ADIEXODO - .38 1986

A small in-between post while I continue ripping CDs and did I mention that the SGE defeated the fucking FC Bayern? Hell Yeah, what a glorious weekend last Saturday, the referee was exhausting but made the right decisions and the fighting heart of the team was rewarded, a bit of luck, but that's part of it. Exat thirty years later, the trophy is back home. OK, we visit Athens and meet Adiexodo with their last slab on Enigma Records, released in 1986 released in 1986 and shortly the band broke up the same year. Sotiris (vocals) and Dimitris (guitars) met @ the "Dragon Fly", a historical hangout of the time in Athens, and search for members to start a band and they met Stathis (drums) and Mimis (bass) and Adiexode began rehearsing in February 1983, with borrowed instruments, improvised amplifiers, hand-made guitar effects and a stolen stream they mix the zero-rated, angry Greek verse with their characteristic chaotic soundWith a raw and aggressive music style and nihilist lyrics, through some line-up changes they carried on until late 1986, playing numerous gigs all around Greece. Enjoy the fuzzy sound and I'm looking forward to the Champions League final and hope Liverpool wins.
