V/A - BG Hronika Vol.3 [Tape] 1991

Last volume of this small tape Compilation series from U.P.C. with even more bands from former Yugoslavia. I thought there were only two volumes but the network of friends sometimes works well and so I was able to enjoy this fantastic sucker which, like its predecessors, has a lot to offer, very good songs by twelve bands, variable and all in an excellent quality. You won't die of a heart attack while listening to, but the level of rough sound and unconditional hardness will melt the paste of the wallpaper. Jaja, and the beer tastes more intense in the early morning, believe me.

PRLJAVO KAZALIŠTE - Televizori 12'' 1978

Prljavo Kazalište are one of the longest lasting bands from the former Yugoslavia (today Croatia), and this little 12Inch is the first work by the five from Zagreb and appeared via Jugoton and offers three rockin' mid-tempo tunes with a fantastic greasy guitar soundNumerous albums/7Inches, Compilation contributions have they made and their popularity at home is correspondingly high. You can read more about the band on the web, there is a lot of material available. I have to go to the train station now, my vacation starts today and there will be more interesting and rare stuff to come... I promise. So stay tuned!

V/A - Oi! Rare & Exotica Vol.2 1999

Let's continue with the second unofficial Volume of massive rare Oi! goodies and again released via Teenage Rebel Records and the selection is excellently cast with twenty-three tracks, which stretched out the middle finger towards to the boring establishment. This time with an info sheet and a few words from it: "Again a lot of more or less unknown bands from all over the world are featured with recordings from 1981-1998. Everybody should know the 80's Oi! bands from England, so there's no need to present them here again like on many other Oi! Compis. So discover something new, have fun and always remember: The world is big, manigfold and real Oi! is anti-rascist (which doesn't mean it's leftwing)." Together with Volume 1 this record offers a lot of exclusive material, good songs and every band doesn't sound dull or wooden, what means in the end: no stupid music goulash. Get both!

V/A - BG Hronika Vol.2 [Tape] 1990

I haven't forgotten, like so many other things, today part two of the very good BG Hronika tape series on U.P.C.. And again interesting bands, this time twelve, from former Yugoslavia. And as on Volume 1, there are rather unknown combos that conjure up decent music, some made it to vinyl releases, others unfortunately only on tape compis like this. Anyone who already likes the first effort and is friendly with Punk from the Balkans will definitely have fun here, varied and edgy, this small, probably only distributed locally, gives us another insight into the very active and innovative scene of this former socialist country, and some records by well-known bands are absolute classics today. The sound quality is acceptable and it goes without saying that I'll be adding part three in a few months. So far so good, later Bundesliga, important match in Berlin today.

1.Violent Age - MARSHAL'S KIDS
2.Jerry Built - MARSHAL'S KIDS

ŽENEVSKI DEKRET - Mostar Demo 1986

I received an email a while back with the latest record (Alkohol) and I really don't know from whom and since it didn't end up in the spam folder I should know the sender. But I have no idea who sent it to me. Anyway, I listened to the single and I have to say: cool dirty stuff! So I researched the net and came across to their unassuming little blog and got more material. And here's a little bit of it with info out of their mouths: "Punk behind the iron curtain and an old jewel: Ženevski Dekret (Geneve Decree) started back 1984 in Mostar (ex-Yugoslavia, now Bosnia/Herzegovina) and the first line-up consisted of Habi (vocals/drums), Kokich (bass), Golub (guitars). Back in the day things were hard despite the fact Yugoslavia was "something better that the other countries of existing socialism" in matters of freedom of speech so their first demo Mostar came out three years later in 1986 and was followed by Neću Da Budem Dio Jebene Mase (Don't Wanna Be A Part Of Fucking Mass) in 1988, a three track EP which was released in 2007 by Ne! Records/Mama Records and all three goodies are taken from the Vogue studio session from 1988 and the record then came out in an edition of 500 copies. A pocket sized booklet written by Habi with a little bio and lyrics is included and music wise this is rough, angry and primitive Hardcore much more brutal than their first demo which has melodic moments." Until 2005 they released one CD, one tape & two singles, there were several line-up changes and they are also strongly represented on Compilations. The recordings are unpolished and impressively document the attitude towards life in the mid Eighties in the heart of ex-Yugoslavia.

V/A - BG Hronika Vol.1 [Tape] 1990

Today a compilation from U.P.C. which features mainly unknown bands from the former Yugoslavia and this is the first volume of three. Focus is on decent Hardcore & Punk and the quality is acceptable. Posted by me many many years ago when I was still a comrade-in-arms at DU and started my blogger life. Well, and now this grandiose cassette is being revived and the second part will of course follow shortly. There are very less of the combos on vinyl, which may be due to the few labels in the country and the short lifespan of the bands, as it is certainly not easy to establish oneself as a Punkband in the early Nineties and tapes were and are a cheap option to reach a broader audience. Ten of them are waiting for you to dance, so join them.... and later the final of the soccer World Cup 2022. Cheers!

1.Monopol - EX-CESS
2.Tramvaj Ljudi - EX-CESS
3.Ja Te Volim - LOBOTOMIJA
4.Pobunom Protiv - LOBOTOMIJA
5.Haralampije - ŠAHT
6.Mars Odavde (Šabane) - ŠAHT
7.Unable - HERPES DISTRESS
8.Ugly Minds - HERPES DISTRESS
9.Bunt Radničke Klase - KLASNI PROBLEM
10.Helga - HOGARI
11.Ima Dana - HOGARI
12.Put Krivuda - POBUNA
13.Beli Golub - POBUNA
14.Crna Zastava - RIKVERC
15.My Girlfriend Is Dead - RIKVERC
16.Vote No Number - BRAINSTORM
17.Doom - BRAINSTORM

PANKRTI - Lepi In Prazni EP 2014

Great re-release of Pankrti's first 7Inch from 1978 on Ne! Records (limited to 300 copies, 100 in black and 100 in clear vinyl) with two bonus cuts, I'm guessing unused studio demo recordings but I'm not sure. Pankrti (Bastards) was founded 1977 in Ljubljana by Peter (vocals) and Gregor (manager), completed with Mitja (guitars), Jure (bass) & Slavc (drums). These five became one of the most important former Yugoslav Punk bands. They have a rough sound and it's still cool today, because there were hardly any bands behind the Iron Curtain at that time. After five albums released, band ceased to exist at the end of 1987, but in 1996 they temporarily reunited to perform as support act for the Sex Pistols in Ljubljana during their Filthy Lucre Tour. In 2003, Pankrti were included in the Yugonostalgic Croatian rockumentary Sretno Dijete, which deals with the former Yugoslav Punk & New Wave scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The band has numerous compilation appearances, some of you can find on the blog, and have been active again since 2007. This EP kicks and demonstrates concentrated determination.

V/A - Step By Step EP 1989

Superb compilation on No Time To Be Wasted Records with six bands from all over the world. The first step took Soothsayer, a Canadian thrash metal band from Beauport/Quebec, founded 1985 and released four albums to date, last from 2019. Swedish Hardcore's Rövsvett were formed in Tranås 1983 and are already well-known guests in this theatre, numerous albums and 7Inches are available, the last came out this year. Leeds based speedie foursome Pleasant Valley Children formed in the late 80's and have released two tapes and one album, as well as a 7inch and compilations, the album's from 1991 and their last sign of life, I guess they broke up in the early Nineties. Patareni is a Hard/Grindcore combo from Zagreb and founded sometime in the early Eighties. Also very active on vinyl; five albums as well as numerous 7Inches and two tapes were recorded by 2021 and thrown among the people. Cat-O-Nine Tails was a HC/Punk act from Schrobenhausen and were active late Eighties to early Nineties. In their short lifespan they released two albums, one single and one tape. An established combo may spice up the grand finale: the Hard-Ones from Sydney, who delight us with their melodic Punkrock since 1982 and I think you know how many albums and singles and t-shirts and towels have been scattered over the world and an authentic live recording completes the march through this stage. - What is there to hear? A varied slab with six different hiking trails that leave little time to rest. Presented in a lovingly elaborate gatefold-cover, lots of infos/lyrics and on red/yellow vinyl, partly in a limited edition. Superb!

1.Deadly Fear - SOOTHSAYER
2.Kontaktproblem - RÖVSVETT
3.Big Sinker/No Second Chance - PLEASENT VALLY CHILDREN
4.Kraj - PATARENI
5.Under Surveillance - CAT-O-NINE TAILS
6.Don't Wanna See You Cry (Live) - HARD-ONES

V/A - 1984 The Third 2LP 1987

One of my favorite compilations is the double album by the important French label New Wave Records, who released a small series called 1984 in the Eighties with tons of international bands and every release is a direct hit in my opinion. Also Freunde, Volume 3 was pressed 1500 times and there are thirty-eight bands/songs to discover, plus a detailed booklet with lots of infos and lyrics and and and... I love such loving and detailed slabs because they not only make an impact acoustically, but also visually and I'm certainly not alone there, and on days off like these, the pleasure is doubly pleasant. The only downside is that I have to write so much and don't like to write much. I've already thought about not writing anything anymore, but I don't like that either. What a conflict hahaha... Now I'll open a beer and the subtle reference to Volume 4 (the last part) and the first two will follow... someday!

PEKINŠKA PATKA - Plitka Poezija 1980

Being one of the first Punk combos in Yugoslavia, they played a major role in opening doors for many bands that came after and their debut is a fucking great longplayer and the best record from Pekinška Patka. The second one (Strah Od Monotonije) is a little more nuanced affair. They turned towards darker and become more wavier but it's still a solid record. Numerous web entries testify to the popularity of this extraordinary combo which consisted of Čonta (vocals), Srele (guitars), Bora (bass) and Laci (drums). Formed in Novi Sad 1978, their first single, Biti Ružan, Pametan I Mlad, sold over 35,000 copies. This type of music created an impressively large youth culture in Yugoslavia, the record could be officially released, and even today the fans are happy when Pekinška Patka play individual concerts. In 2012 this classic was reissued, rightly so, and they're also represented on relevant compilations. Don't miss this fantastic album with sixteen Killers! B.t.w., congratulations to Real Madrid for winning the Champions League, I supported Liverpool, but the royals scored the goal.

QUOD MASSACRE - Fait Accomply 1983-1986 [Tape]

I'll give you one more today and this stuff comes from an interesting band, back then from a united country, and in which I spent a very nice holiday (not in Slovenia and pictures will follow tomorrow), and this combo is called Quod Massacre, a melodic HC Punk band from Ljubljana, Slovenia. Founded by Bogdan (vocals), Robert (guitars), Rob H. (bass), Rok (drums) and Faith Accomply is an official tape repress approved by the band members of No Profit Tapes, original released in 1986 and repressed for the first time in form of 200 pro dubbed tapes with pad print. Each tape comes with original A5 14-page zine/booklet. Available in white, blue & green colors. This band has a basic thrash sound with a good bit of melody, but the heartfelt lyrics and good production sets this tape apart. The recordings are consistently decent and it was not until 1991 that they released their first album through Search & Enjoy. It followed a live CD in 2016 from Ne! Records and they are represented on various compilationsThat's it for today, I'm a little drunk and you'll see me again tomorrow.

V/A - Popstars Play Poptones 1991

This interesting compilaton is the only release by Red Phoenix Records and I have no idea who and when this file was beamt to me, it just comes in too much and I can't remember everything, especially since I'm almost a bit overwhelmed, but in the end it doesn't matter. The fact is, four bands, largely unknown to me, intoxicate with excellent music, catchy melodies, occasionally longer pop songs trilled with organs in the middle and short crisp crackers as well. Three songs per band and I can't help, but somehow I feel a slightly melancholy undertone in the whole thing, I think people tend to be a little romantic in the Balkans, ahhhh... I love that. Fazit: All ingredients for a delicious menu are available, Chapeau!

PROBLEMI - Nije Po Jus-U 2014

Holiday friends, bad weather, good times for blog visitors. I open the treasure chest with a compilation nuggets by Problemi. Founded in Zagreb, August 1978 as a result of the social economic situation and new trends (punk) spreading rapidly over the world and the first line-up consisted of Marino (vocals), Valter and Žarko (guitars), Maurizio (bass), Milenko (drums). After some line-up changes they played their first gig in September 1978 at a youth center with several young bands. Interestingly, Marino, as the youngest member, is responsible for the created punk expression of the group, in which he involved slightly older members who grew up on a fiercer, but more classical understanding of rock music. Initially, the band included in the repertoire arrangements of songs by bands such as the Sex Pistols, but they soon focused on their own songs. The music is mostly created by new guitarist Boris, while the lyrics are written by Marino. So, absolute enthusiasm and more than necessary musical foreknowledge blended into the youthful rebellion with a good dose of banter and the Pula legend was created. The band lyrically expressed itself as a voice of the people by saying publically what people thought, and encountered a resistance from the authorities.

Even though art shouldn't have boundaries, the government did a lot of silence the band by restricting public gigs and recordings. Despite this, Problemi survived for several years by changing band members, and consequently, styles of performing. However, they never compromised the message they were bringing to the public. Numerous gigs throughout Croatia and Slovenia are still remembered by fans and members of other well established bands of the time. A month after their first gig, Problemi get their first chance to play in the hottest club at the time Uljanik, which Pero remembers as a big part of that time because only the best were invited by Uljanik.

At the beginning of the eighties they finally got the chance to record a handfull of songs at Truli, Zagreb which were published on the essential Novi Punk Val 78-80 compilation. They stopped working late 1980 (singer Marino passed away on February 2, 1981) because some members were drafted to the compulsory army, marking a period of silence for the band.

Nije Po Jus-U is full with their complete former studio sessions and rare pieces recorded at home in Pula, June 1979, a total of fourteen rough smasher. Released via Rest In Punk in an edition of 250 copies with glossy black/white insert featuring liner notes, photos, lyrics. Fine Work!

PARAF - Izleti 1981

Second record by Paraf from Rijeka and the first with new singer Vim Cola, released via ZKP RTVL, better known as Slivovitz Records, and musicians were: Vim (vocals), Ritchie (guitars/synth), Zdravko (bass), Dušan (drums) and I don't know how firm you in Yugo Punk, but Paraf are one of the first and best bands of the Balkans and for all those who are not familiar with it, I fixed all the previous posts in this blog. Compared to the debut, the sound is more wavie and melodic and some songs exceed the five minute mark. I can say, different in style but great goodies (on this rainy morning I was humming their melodies softly in the subway, so even the mutants didn't bother me anymore). I think, the presence of the new female member had a major influence on the rough, wild shell of the early phase & the band celebrates, sometimes a little wistful, intense emotions and transform them professional in eleven power/wonderful examples, their bites are definitely worth listening. Enough for today, the days off are imminent, enjoy them as much as you can and I'll be back tomorrow.

STIDLJIVA LJUBIČICA - Jesenje Frke 1982

The second album of the Croatian combo Stidljiva Ljubičica stands firmly in the ground like a monolith. The debut Osvrni Se Na Mene is already a powerpop opera. The album was recorded in the Jadran Film studio, but unfortunately the composer, guitarist, Zlatko and bassist, Tvrtko could not take part in the mix because they went to the army immediately after recording. Elvira and Renato attended school and Zlatko with great confidence left PIKI STANČIĆ to finish the mix, and it was agreed earlier to make an album cover. Zlatko wanted the album to be called A GIFT FROM HEAVEN and the song to be the announcement single, but that didn't happen, but the title of the song from the last album Jesenje Frke was taken as title of the second album. The release of the album was announced by a song using a live string quartet called Ne Idi, but the actual hit (promoted by the National TV show "Hit Of The Month" with the band's appearance in military uniforms) was the song Tvoj Broj. There was very little but no praise for the album because there was not much opportunity to promote it. Only at the beginning of 1984 the group was physically able to reunite in the same composition, but the members of the band could not promote the "old" album, so there was only one concert in the original lineup in Zagreb in the Pauk Hall. The group was again full of new ideas and even more interested in experimenting with rhythm and style. So all twelve songs are small melodic, energetic pop anthems and weave a fascinatingly refreshing sound.

V/A - Vrući Dani I Vrele Noći 1982

In ex-Yugoslavia, some great records were released on Jugoton, and the range covered all genres. A very good example is this compilation of New Wave, PowerPop, Punk, Synth Pop, which provides good mood and relaxation on this sunny warm autumn day. There are some of the artists on vinyl and it's worth getting to know some of them. So, should you still plan train or long car rides today, put this sound into the player and bridge the time with it. A little poem at the end: "Your star shines bright in the sky, I want to follow it. Your voice touches my skin and electrifies my soul. Your spirit envelops me, I feel secure. Spread your love far out, like overgrown veins, flowing down on me like rain. So you stay with me, so I go with you ..... into the unknown." And now Soccer.

STIDLJIVA LJUBIČICA - Osvrni Se Na Mene 1981

Let's come together and unlock your eavesdroppers because it waits another example of fantastic powerpop riffs, this time by Stidljiva Ljubičica from Croatia and they were active 1980-1982 in former Yugoslavia. The band split up soon after releasing second album. Members were: Renato (vocals, organ, piano), Zlatko (guitars), Tvrtko (bass), Elvira (drums). Glorious music deserves background knowledge and I give you a bumpy translation because my Croatian is a bit rusty, but I think you can follow that, here we go:

The emergence of a new wave in the music scene, which enabled various musical styles and directions to simultaneously exist in this region at the same time. In the beginning it was underground art music created by people often without big musical experience and not much talent but with a lot enthusiasm for new ideas. There were various fusions and almost incompatible directions that created new hybrids of completely unique and original music. Combinations of rock'n'roll, punk, ska, surf, new wave created Clash, Talking Heads, Blondie, B52, Ramones and many more... in Yugoslavia by Film, Haustor, Azra (only the first two albums), Stidljiva Ljubičica and some other bands who wanted to use this boom to catch a slice of glory of the wings of a successful trend which enters the mainstream.

Stidljiva Ljubičica unmistakably had the characteristics of a famous new wave groups, they appear suddenly, out of nowhere. They were more than ten years younger than their competitors. They had a female drummer Elvira (not common at this time) & they were fuckin' teenagers who held their first gig at the end of 1979 in the hall of the high school center Vrbovec. Their songs are short, mostly 2-3 minutes long, varied, completely stripped of superfluous arrangements and with catchy beats. Lyrically small pop art stories. They performed in cinema halls, clubs and in smaller towns. The audience celebrated them frenetically, they played a couple of two-minute songs and ran off stage. There they were greeted by a bunch of journalists and photojournalists so they held a short press conference and told them "we release our first single via Jugoton and starting recording our first album."

In summer 1981, their debut 7Inch 'Volim Te' was released and a Yugoslavian version of Top Of The Pops invited them and the whole country became aware of the fantastic four! At that point, the band had about twenty songs ready so they go ahead and started the recordings for their first album, Osvrni Se Na Mene. Before that, they decided to celebrate their success with a promotional concert at the sports hall in Vrbovac, together Johnny Stulic and Azra, and held a concert in front of thousand people. Many gigs all over Yugoslavia were made in front of several thousand visitors & it was a great opportunity to promote the album which they recorded and mixed in seven days. Despite the praise of the media, the commercial success of the album was not as satisfactory as that of the record label.

The band decided to start immediately with the recording of the second album Jesenje Frke, with the idea, that after recording, Renato (he hasn't finished high school) as soon as possible join the army and Elvira start a job at the media and when the record is out, she will be performed again, as well as Renato's return from the army. There was very little no praise for the album, because there was not much opportunity to promote it. It was early 1984 that the group could physically reunite, but the members couldn't find the feelings of the "old" spirit, so there was only one concert in the original cast at the Pauk Hall in Zagreb. The air was finally out and Stidljiva Ljubičica history.

Don't hesitate, get it!

V/A - Unterhund Veselica V Živo 26.10.1996

Short Black Big Unknown Serbian Culture Shock Attack today for your deaf ears and I don't know what is Unterhund but I think it's the club where this compilation was recorded and we listen to four bands and I can assure you, it's a listening pleasure of a special kind. Kristuši's credo are short songs with a touch of ska which is seasoned with a sax and have a 7Inch out, the same goes for Pridigarji, formed 1987 in Ormož and they made five albums until 2011. Noise Order released one album in 1987 and their music is, I would say, a heavy noisy doomhardcore sound with a damn good screaming voice, I've experienced something like that live, just brilliant. Wasserdicht have also recorded a few albums and it is a treat listen to the extreme distorted guitar, nice three cuts and the winner for me. Cool record and interesting mixture anyway!
