V/A - Bloodstains Across The World #7 2022

Well it's time for one more Bloodstains Compilation and this one is cheap like the other "from all over the world" (from #3) and kept in a simple CD-R format, but I'm pleased that there are always maniacs who share their things, in contrast to other arrogant Assholes who defame such small people even though they don't know them at all and believe that they contribute a part of underground culture with their so-called professional Compilations (hahaha...), they just have to get their ass kicked and I give them a big Fuck You! I prefer to take these because the originals aren't tangible and I am grateful for this and everyone who thinks the same way will be enthusiastic with this cheap but cool one.

PURRKUR PILLNIKK - Tilf EP 1981

One of the most famous bands from Reykjavík and gladly guests in my theater are Purrkur Pillnikk ("Sleepy Chess-Player"), and this four piece consisted of Einar (vocals), Friðrik (guitar), Bragi (bass), Ásgeir (drums) and were one of the most productive bands in Icelandic music history, and in their life-span (18 months) they released three albums. Founded 1981 and the musical skills of all members were scarce but that changed quickly. The arrangement of the instruments was decided on the spot and since Einar was not considered suitable for any instrument, he was made to sing, in fact it is hardly possible to speak of singing on his part, but his vocal use was considered very special and he spoke or shouted much more than singing. The band's music was hard to define, although there was no doubt that it was Punkrock, but as far as a more detailed definition was concerned, one of the pop writers spoke of "manic neo-punk with jazz and funk influences" - and that describes their music. You can hear it clearly on their debut EP Tilf which features ten short songs with aggressive lyrics which was released via their self-founded Gramm label. Sometime in 1982 Purrkur Pillnikk split and an interesting CD compilation Í Augum Úti came out in 2001 with all recordings (except the Ekki En album, for whatever reason). Enjoy!

UTANGARÐSMENN - Ha Ha Ha (Rækjureggae) EP 1980

Let's move to the far north of Europe and meet a band that I'm happy to invite to my home and that led the New Wave movement in Iceland. We're talking about Utangarðsmenn from Reykjavík which were formed 1979 and this is their rare debut EP which came via Steinar. The name of Utangarðsmenn is complicated when talking about the Punk revolution that hit the country in the summer of 1980, although the band's music is considered much more rock than Punk. Utangarðsmenn appeared at the same time as Bubbi (vocals) as a solo artist, and changed the Icelandic music scene, which had been in the doldrums for many years. At the same time and as a result, fresh Rock & Punk bands sprung up in the same spirit and the country's youth absorbed new currents, a new revolution that surrounded Icelandic music, and even today there is a hint of those changes. It soon became clear to the people that something new was brewing, and the band immediately received a lot of support with their original raw sound and indeed also reggae music. Two 12Inches plus a single (guest on numerous compis) were made and in 1981 they disbanded after only two years. Brilliant stuff!

DAS KAPITAL - Lili Marlene 1984

Well folks, now an interesting band from the far north of Europe and you know, extremely cool music comes from there, sometimes snotty and cheeky, sometimes melancholic and dreamy and these Gentlemen are more in the second area, but read for yourself: Das Kapital was a short-lived band, fronted by Bubba Morthens, at a time when he was living fast. By this time Bubbi had been drinking heavily and was burned out, he had released five solo albums over a four year period, three albums with Utangarðsmann and three albums with Egó. When news broke in early 1984 that he was going to the United States to act in films, the nation went along with it and wished him well, unaware of his drug use. He also said in interviews that he had formed a new band with Danny Pollock and other western musicians under the name Das Kapital. The name, as most of course know, comes from the work of Karl Marx. Bubbi went west in the spring but came back a few weeks and still hadn't formed a band. In July, however, news broke that Das Kapital had become a reality. Besides Bubba, the members of this group were Mike (guitars) and Bubba's friend Björgvin (guitars), Jakob (bass) Guðmundur (drums), but the last two came from Tappi Tíkarrass. Bubbi himself was the third guitarist and vocalist and Gunnar played keyboards for a time.

Initially, the intention was probably to play only at Laugahátíð during the shopkeeper's weekend, but then it was decided to continue the collaboration and make an album. Bubbi had suggested songs that were actually all in English, but the lyrics were quickly translated into Icelandic. Before the band went into the studio, guitarist Björgvin left. However, two assistants were hired for the recordings, saxophonist Jens and cellist Arnþór. The album was made in a hurry and was released by Gramm and was titled Lili Marlene after the only cover song on the album, the wartime hit immortalized by Marlene Dietrich. Lili Marlene was generally well-received and sold well, even though the critics of the newspapers were unimpressed, the album barely got anything but shitty reviews in Morgunblaðin and Þjóðvillin, but much better in Helgarpóstinum, and became the third best-selling album of  1984. In the same year, they held a solidarity concert at Lækjartorg  but then there was a BSRB strike, the strikers were invited to give speeches between the band's songs, but by the time it was over, the band had been pushed off the stage and the strikers were taken over the program, Das Kapital thus became guests in a secondary act at their own concert. Soon after the end of the year or in January 1985, the news arrived that Das Kapital had gone on hiatus, but she had then retired, the reason being that Bubbi had admitted his problem and gone to treatment. He would re-emerge later that year after the treatment with one of his best albums, Woman. However, Das Kapital's story was not completely over, because they reunited at Bubba's birthday concert on June 6, 2006, which was recorded and released under the name 06.06.06, where you can hear three songs with the band. EGÓ - Breyttir Tímar 1982

This weekend will be opened with relaxed New Wave sounds from the last corner of Europe and since I like to steal I'll give you the wiki info about them: Egó was a combo from Reykjavík and were founded in fall 1981 by Bubbi Morthens with his younger brother and guitarist Bergþór Morthens and their friend, bassist Þorleifur Guðjónsson. Egó's first drummer was Jóhann Ridar (aka “Motorhead”), and for a while guitarist Ragnar Sigurðsson played along with them. Jóhann and Ragnar were replaced by drummer Magnús Stefánsson and Tómas M. Tómasson. Bubbi Morthens, the frontman and main lyricist in the band had been part of influential punk/rock/reggie band Utangarðsmenn, but had been fired from the band for reportedly having a "big ego", which was also allegedly the reason for the band name "Egó." Their first tour was in Reykjavík and the debut, Breyttir Tímar was released on April 1, 1982, and became quickly one of the best selling albums in Icelandic music history. It stayed in the second place on the Icelandic album chart and stayed in the top ten for nineteen weeks straight. During the promotional tour for the album, Þorleifur quit and was replaced by former Utangarðsmenn bassist Rúnar.

Egó's second album Í Mynd, came out in late 1982. It was considered by most people to be better than the previous album. However, they lost a big part of their sound when Magnús decided to leave them on tour in Scandinavia. He was replaced by Jökull. Also, keyboard player Gunnar joined the band. Both Bubbi & Magnús have said in interviews that they don't have any recollections or memories whatsoever from this time period; mostly because they were all in deep drug use at the time. Finally it was internal conflicts within the band that led to its demise. The relationship between Egó and their record label had also gotten to the point where Egó had broken up as a group, but still recorded one more album due to the contract they had previously signed. According to this contract, they were obligated to release one more album, which did not get very good reviews. Most people believe that at this point in their career, Egó were fed up with each other and only did the third album to satisfy the record label, not out of their own willingness or excitement to make a new record. Therefore, the album is only OK, and doesn't sound like there is much work behind it. After the release of the self-titled third album (working title "Bless" or "Goodbye", which pretty much says it all) the band broke up in different directions. However, in 2001, the members of Egó reunited to release a compilation called Frá Upphafi Til Enda.

Later in 1984, Bubbi returned to Iceland and formed a rock and roll band called Das Kapital and released an album called Lili MarleneOnly he has had any success or fame since Egó broke up, as he to this day has released many solo career albums, mostly with acoustic guitar oriented pop/rock music. Also, it should be mentioned that Magnús Stefánsson has been credited by many people as the best Icelandic punk rock drummer ever. A few years after leaving Egó on tour in Scandinavia, he joined one of Iceland's most successful pop/rock /funk band; Sálin hans Jóns míns.

Soft, gentle pop music wrapped in nine fillet slices, I like it.

TAUGADEILDIN - s/t EP 1981

Now a rare piece from the far north of Europe by Taugadeildin. One of those bands that managed to release an EP during the punk & new wave hype around the early Eighties, but they didn't exist for long like many other bands of that era.
Formed originally as duet when bassist Árni and singer Óskar began playing music together with help by a drummer in autumn of 1980, but soon guitarist Arnór (Fræbbblarnir) joined them. Arnór was then replaced by Óðinn and Þorsteinn also joined the band as Keyboarder plus Kormákur (drums) and new singer Egill. Their music is a kind of late post-punk mixed with punk roots and a fuckin' journalist defined them as ska band, you guess its members didn't want to know more, this stupid fool. In spring 1981, Taugadeildin recorded this four track EP, released via Fálkinn (in small editions), and it shows the very strong playing and good beats of the four and the record received mostly positive feedback. They performed at the music festival "Another Sound In The Drum", which was held during summer, in addition to being one of the bands who were opener for the British band Any Trouble. The lifespan of Taugadeildin comes to an end, and by the time the record was finally released in autumn after some delays, they retired. These days the record is as rare as solid honest politics and a great collector's item. The music of the Neurology Clinic have been forgotten a little. Her Longing (which was their most well-known goodie) was released on the Northern Light Playhouse compilation, also released via Fálkinn in 1981 (shortly after the band's release) and was supposed to promote Icelandic new wave & punk music abroad, and two songs became later a place on two tapes (Pönksafn) by Erðanúmúsik and a worthy tribute on Bloodstains Across The World #4Four magical songs remain at the end and the slab can be purchased for a mere € 600, a real bargain!

Q4U - Q1 1982

Today on a visit to the far north of Europe and we meet an amazingly versatile band that only made a mini-album in the early eighties but meanwhile there are some CD re-releases out and read the following information about the artists: Q4U are one of the great survivors of Icelandic music and was founded winter of 1980-1981 in Reykjavík, inspired by the British punk movement. It’s original members were Elínborg (Ellý) Halldórsdóttir (vocals), Berglind (Linda) Garðarsdóttir (vocals), Steinþór Stefánsson (guitar), Gunnþór Sigurðsson (bass), Helgi (drums) and Már (synthesizer). Helgi and Már soon left the band & Helgi was replaced by Kormákur (Kommi) Geirharðsson on drums. By early 1982 they self-released a full length cassette, “Skaf Í Dag” and appeared in the documentary Rokk í Reykjavík, which showcased the Icelandic punk scene. This version of the band ended and only two members continued on. In the summer of 1982 Ellý and Gunnþór recruited Óðinn Guðbrandsson (guitar) and Árni Daníel (synthesizer) from the band Taugadeildin. Their drummer was replaced by a Roland TR-808 drum machine they named “Elísabet II”. signaling a change in the group’s sound toward synthesizer-driven post punk. In August 1983 they reinstated Kormákur to record a final set of demos and then called it quits.

Q4U began with a stylish, aggressive Punk image before experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers, which almost nobody did in Reykjavík at the time. The later sound had gothic leanings, often compared with Siouxsie & The Banshees and X-Mal Deutschland. Their body of work is united by the powerful vocals of Ellý, who mostly sings in Icelandic about controversial, political experiences, much like Ari Up of The Slits.

In 1984-1985 the group Þetta er bara Kraftwerk (ÞEYR) continued working on similar post-punk synth music Q4U as had been working with. Ellý and Árni Daníel teamed up with Árni Daníel's little brother Ingólfur and later Óskar Þórisson joined. This group recorded a few songs as demos, but did not publish anything in its lifetime. Everybody started having families, studying or working. Then in 1996 the group came together again, under the influence of the grunge movement and the interest in punk and post-punk that blossomed at the time. Now it was decided to put together a CD with some of the unreleased material of the group and publish it. This CD, Q2, contained much of the unreleased demos from 1982, a demo from late 1982 with the synth version of the group, the EP from 1983 and the demos from August 1983. There was also one song by ÞEYR on the CD. It was published in 1997 under the name Q2. Q4U followed the publication of the CD up with a number of concerts in 1996-1998 and also with television performances, of which some are available on the YouTube. One of these is with the song Egó, which is otherwise unpublished. The line-up was Gunnþór, Ellý, Árni Daníel, Ingólfur from ÞEYR and a new drummer, Guðmundur Gunnarsson.

The group is currently rehearsing again after another thirteen years abscence, with two gigs already having taken place in 2010. (source: DarkEntriesRecords)

Consistently awesome stuff and interesting for everyone!

THE OUTSIDERS - s/t 12'' 1981

There are records that deserve re-posting and today is a good day to do this and it's a new fresh rip. Originally posted in December 2011 by the Girls From Tahiti blog, unfortunately only available as an archive today, but always worth a visit. We're talkin' about the Outsiders, better known as Utangarðsmenn from Reykjavík and they also released this 12inch in their Icelandic language as 45Rpm on Steinar, one year after their debut album Geislavirkir. Six songs can be found here, all of which shine with catchy melodies, especially 'Where Are The Bodies' is a classic with a slow pace that you can't escape from. This is not really a punk record but my taste. There are few punk bands from the volcanic island, but most of them played decent music and their records are hard to get. Well, what else can I say? A very good record with pleasant sharpness and creative power from a short-lived combo who split up much too early in 1981, but honored on numerous compilations - and now... breakfast!

V/A - Bloodstains Across The World #5 2019

Early hour on this Friday, I pack another Bloodstains compilation out with more rare early sounds from all over the world, and Volume 3 is once again as CD-R in vinyl look released and by the same detectives, I think. Half of the twenty songs are known to me and are always welcome, while the 'new' material is sometimes questionable and I personally would have made a different selection. But with so many unknown bands/songs I'm always amazed where music was made with sometimes first-class nuggets. And I don't hesitate long, as soon as a new release of this brilliant series is available. It's a shame that Killed By Death doesn't go any further. Maybe there comes one more hype like in the 90s, who knows. 100 copies exist and watch out for #6 next year. Have fun discovering new musical highlights!

V/A - Just When You Thought It Was... Quiet! 1982

Before I start today with ripping a very nice New Wave compilation by Quiet Records with bands from two continents, thirteen in total and each with one song. With records like this, it's like a lottery, sometimes amazingly good, and sometimes terribly bad. This stuff belongs to the successful part. A healthy mixture of fast punkie pieces, typical wave sounds and a little experimental noises and that's exactly what I like. I can't tell who sent me the file, but it was definitely a good deed. I have to do my laundry on the side and another New Wave goodie will follow later, I hope it's as refreshing as this one.

SOGBLETTIR - Orð Öskursins 12'' 1987

Over the Arctic Ocean to the volcanic island of Europe and the lovely elves present us Orð Öskursins, the rare debut 12Inch by Sogblettir, a four piece from Reykjavík, which came out in an edition of 500 copies before Christmas 1987. The songs were recorded in spring 1987 by Jón (vocals), Arnar (guitars), Ari (bass), Gunnar (drums) and released via Smekkleysa. One year later came their last mini-album Fyrsti Kossinn (nowadays at horrendous prices available) with six goodies to the surface and after that was Finito. Musically, we meet the typical heavy, cloudy, wild sound of the opposites of fire and ice which the Northmen pack brilliant in three songs... a great appearance!

V/A - Bloodstains Across The World #4 2019

The coldest month in this country knocks and to leave it outside, we heat up the first day with more rarities of the glory years 1977-1985 from across the world. Successful selection again, but it's a shame that the presentation is very sparse. Of course, the lack of money is responsible, but always using the same artwork and just changing the titles is not particularly creative. This could be better as well with little resources in my opinion. Well, I don't wanna complain, but criticizing is allowed. Meanwhile there are #5 and #6 out and will surely follow this year. We can be curious how long the world will continue to supply us with material. Enjoy!

1.Rock & Roll Death Camp - ANGLE

ÞEYR - The Fourth Reich 12'' 1982

4th EP in form of a 12'' on Mjöt by Þeyr from Reykjavík and while the Scandinavia tour in early '82 the band gained more popularity and even managed to appear on radio and television in Denmark, they also went to a studio and recorded a few songs which were released on the 12-inch EP The Fourth Reich, in memory of Wilhelm Reich whose books had been banned by the Nazi regime. The image cover was alleged Nazi incitation because it depicted Wilhelm Reich wearing a Nazi-styled armband and the British label Shout was obligated to change the cover. However, it should be said, that the armband shown on the cover contained the symbol of the orgone physics, which represented duality and its origins in unity, referred by Reich as functionalism. On The Fourth Reich the use of percussions and rhythmical efforts were far more important than in earlier works. In this respect, the song “Zen” was particularly important due to its marked rock style, but the album did not have the impact of earlier works because the music was less accessible. In the UK the record was also released via Shout with a different cover.

V/A - V.I.S.A. Présente 1985

And again Bondage Records, in collaboration with the French label V.I.S.A. was this little cold wavy gold piece created and there are sounds of driving gloomy moods around us, peppered with many live recordings, by mainly local bands which already made a few records, while others only known through their tape presentations. I love compilations like these where I'm confronted with songs that are absolutely awesome and then I search for more stuff by the bands and can't find nothing, that annoys me and I think so much potential is wasted and such records receive their value from us. Well, enjoy now fourteen minimal innovative psychedelic synth art cold wave punk pop nuggets.

ÞEYR- Mjötviður Til Fóta 2001

And we stay wavie and visit the small volcanic island in the far north of Europe and find us in Reykjavík and meet Þeyr, a renowned new wave band from the early 1980s. Shrouded under a veil of mystery, their three-year existence was characterized by a deep interest in ancient wisdom. Þeyr helped bring about the new wave movement in Iceland and became one of the first Icelandic bands to be known abroad. Their music was now something very special, raw and angry, sometimes compared with works of Killing Joke or Joy Division. Their music never has been re-released as the masters are believed to be lost. However in 2001 a compilation was released called Mjötviður til Fóta. It contains songs recovered from the album Mjötviður Mær and the single Iður til Fóta, two records released in 1981. Thus, the only recorded material of the band currently available is this release, as well as some Icelandic compilations which feature a few tracks, released in 2001 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the creation of Theyr. Stolen words again but I think these describe the work of the band excellent and for that they're made by people who can do it better than me. Extra: the Life Transmission 7'' from 1981.

DAUÐYFLIN - Drepa Drepa EP 2016

This slab blows through properly and makes clear that Iceland arrived in terms of hardcore. "A dirty, energetic feminist blastwave of tastefully reverbed pogo infused ferocity from Reykjavík. This is the kind of punk that makes us all rigid and fevered up. It is at once the new sound and the classic feel of pure rage", so a short review. Released via the small German D.I.Y label Erste Theke Tonträger and this non-profit was founded in 2010 and will always be a one man operation dedicated to bringing you vinyl releases of your favorite punk, hardcore, powerpop and rock’n'roll bands. All releases shine with lovingly fitted artwotk, limited editions and at fair prices. I became aware of the band/label by browsing the net and it's nice to see that there is still really good Punkmucke to discover (far away from the crappy mainstream). Be warned, this record is a dynamic explosion!

FRÆBBBLARNIR - Viltu Bjór Væna? 1996

Now a fuckin' rare and awesome post and it's really difficult to get records or anything else from Fræbbblarnir, a Scandinavian band which were formed in 1978 and released a number of records until they quit early in 1983. A punk band playing short, melodic songs fast and raw, they were inspired by the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Damned, Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias, Stiff Little Fingers and the rest of the early Punk and New Wave scene, as well as 1960s bands like the Kinks and Troggs. They appeared in the documentary Rokk í Reykjavík, and the album “Viltu Nammi Væna?” is regarded as a classic. Its members continued playing on and off under various names until a compilation album was released by Smekkleysa (Bad Taste) in 1996, when the original band was re-formed. The band is still active and their record “Í Hnotskurn”, released in 2015 got excellent reviews, an album of the year for veteran critic Halldor Ingi Andresson and top reviews without exception. This re-release on CD from 1996 came via Smekkleysa (Bad Taste) and offers the album "Villtu Nammi Væna" with the addition of the 7Inches "Bjór" and "False Death", Out-Takes from the recording of VNM and some great live recordings as bonus. A great CD with thirty-eight catchy and dirty Killers!!

VONBRIGÐI - Ó, Reykjavík 2010

This is a solid release from Mauerstadtmusik with seven punkies from Vonbrigði, an Iceland band which was formed in 1980. Their first 7Inch on Gramm is a brilliant goodie with four songs and you can listen to that via KBD Records. A year later the full length Kakófónía was released and the sound goes more into wave with a dark touch and 1985 the band broke up. In 2004 they come back with guitarist Hallur Ingólfsson and since then they are still active. This mini album shows the bands rough side and hits harder than their album tracks.
