V/A - 14 Songs For Greg Sage & The Wipers 1993

One more true gem for a band I like a lot: This is a Wipers tribute album which was originally released as a box set of four colored 7-inch records by Tim/Kerr Records in 1992. 1993 comes this CD re-release of the album, expanded to include six additional artist covers. The Wipers were a influential punk band that began in Portland, Oregon in 1977. Greg Sage lead the group to recording many "underground" albums that created a small yet humble following with their songs about hardship, pain and frustration. This is a bunch of covers of Wipers songs, as you might have guessed. All the covers are really well done and pay a positive tribute. Quality music for any Wipers maniac.

1.Potential Suicide - NAPALM BEACH
2.Astro Cloud - M99
3.Return Of The Rat - NIRVANA
4.Up Front - POISEN IDEA
5.On The Run - DHARMA BUMS

WIPERS - Youth Of America 1981

Hello everyone and welcome September and I want to start with a record that comes first in my personal TopTen, next to other brilliant ones, and this slab is an absolutely must have! Anyone who visits my blog knows that I'm a big Wipers fan, it's not for nothing that I tattooed the logo on my forearm. Youth Of America is in my opinion their best record, every song is a blast and 'When It's Over' is a striking example of the band's sound, a splendid intro, a bit psychedelic but driving and rhythmic like the sea, my favourite tune, but the remaining five songs also keep the level high and I can only turn it up at full volume. I don't know how often I've already penetrated my neighbors in my ecstasy (they never complained because they know I'm a nice bastard) but listen carefully and you can feel how the music takes possession of you. Search the net for reviews and you will see me confirmed. Greg (vocals/guitars), Dave (bass), Brad (drums) recorded this milestone at Wave Sound Studios and was released via Park Avenue Records, I have the German licensed copy from Weird System, the great Hamburg label that published essential slabs themselves. Here you have some short infos: Wipers was a recording project formed in 1977 by Greg Sage in Portland. First conceived as a studio project, they originally planned to release fifteen LPs over ten years and completely avoid doing tours or interviews. They disbanded in 1989 after releasing six studio albums, but reformed in 1993 to release three more albums. They disbanded for good in 1999. I'm putting the record a dozen times a year because I need this music to deal with all the shit out there and believe me.... that's soooooo good! I have re-upped all previous Wipers posts, if something down, use the comment section.

WIPERS - München/Theaterfabrik 25.09.1986

The Wipers were a punk rock group formed in Portland/Oregon in 1977 by guitarist Greg Sage, drummer Sam Henry & bassist Dave Koupal. Wipers were one of the earliest American purveyors of the genre, and the group's tight song structure and use of heavy distortion has been hailed as extremely influential by numerous critics and musicians, including Nirvana, who covered several of their songs. This Gig contains 16 songs in an amazing sound quality and is definitely one of the best bootlegs out there from the band. Here i can hear me sick for hours, great song selection, for me, the Wipers are one of the bands that have influenced me greatly and always blasting out my speakers. Get this superb recordings from one of the best bands around this fuckin' planet.

WIPERS - Complete Rarities 1979 - 1990

A must for this day are the Wipers, music for eternity in my opinion and We always had a good time with them. A bit info to this: Misunderstood, mistreated, underrated, and/or just plain unknown, Greg Sage should be mentioned in the first breaths about trailblazing guitarists and U.S. independent music of the '80s and '90s. Since forming his band, Wipers, in Portland/OR, in the late '70s Sage has been put through the ringer more than enough to justify his hermetic operating methods and attitude. This set just contains all the song material which was either not published regularly, outtakes, different versions, live recordings and three acoustic pearls. All done by myself and a worthy completion of this great music, b.t.w. I spent too much time ripping my vinyl. Now enjoy this unique and superb music and have a drink with me!

WIPERS - Is This Real? 1979

A permanent guest in this house is my favorite band from Portland, the Wipers, and in numerous previous posts (all re-upped) I already made clear how much I rave about the three and it's finally time to introduce their debut: Is This Real? it was recorded by Greg (vocals/guitar), Dave (bass), Sam (drums) and was originally released on vinyl in 1979 via Park Avenue Records. Info: Initially wanting to put it out through his own Trap Records, Sage decided to release the album through Park Avenue Records, hoping that it would give them slightly wider distribution. Before it was released, Park Avenue insisted that the band re-record the album at a professional studio, as it was originally recorded at the band's rehearsal studio on a four-track recorder. When finally released, the album was not promoted and received little attention, only developing a cult following in the band's hometown. Reviewing for The Village Voice in 1980, Robert Christgau wrote, "Three guys from Portland (Oregon, but it might just as well be Maine) who caught on to punk unfashionably late and for that reason sound like they're still discovering something. Which hardly makes them unique--there are similar bands in dozens if not hundreds of American cities, many of whom send me records. What distinguishes this one is Greg Sage's hard-edged vocals--detached but never silly, passionate but never overwrought--and economical one-hook construction."

A review by Stephen Howell: "The production leaves much to be desired with its tinny-sounding drums, but, fortunately, the negatives don't outweigh the positives on this album. Guitarist/vocalist Greg Sage writes fairly simplistic songs with power chords, but each melody infects your brain like a fever. Even though Sage is from Oregon, he sings in a New York-style slur not dissimilar to Joey Ramone. Throughout the album, there is a very dark and ominous feel to the material (e.g., "D-7"), but it's made interesting on tracks like "Alien Boy," which changes from 4/4 time to 2/4 time. Sage also has a unique guitar style where he strums chords and lets them sustain into feedback, which creates rich textures in the songs."

Well, as you can see, it reads all very well and anyone who knows the band will be able to confirm that without a doubt. The Wipers are extra class and play punkrock at the top, at any time and suitable for every mood. This is the CD-Version with the Alien Boy EP ('80) as bonus, with three outtakes from the album sessions. TOP!!!

WIPERS - Over The Edge 1983

What would be a 4 December without the Wipers? Right, a useless day without drugs. My absolute favorite US band and the third album shines with eleven catchy emotional nuggets im typical Wipers sound and I can lend my ears at any time to every record, unchallenged and extraordinary in every way, touches me every time. A few words which I stole somewhere and exactly hit the point I think: "Like the previous two albums, Over The Edge must have had (and still has) the capacity to make quite an impact on you if you’re in that phase of your life when you wonder whether it’s all worth it, when you’re wondering what the fuck you’re doing at the place where you are and how you’re gonna find a way out of the mess." I have the Braineater copy with red labels and all downers are re-upped, go searching for it and enjoy the music!

GREG SAGE - Straight Ahead 1985

OK, folks...what should I write to this amazing artist/music/record?? Greg Sage is the man! And for all you people who don't know him first told he is the head of the brilliant Wipers. You can buy every record from this extraordinary band and none of the albums is disappointing. I must confess: I'm the absolute Wipers freak and so I am little biased but this is Greg Sage solo here and We both love his stuff. He wrote songs that really catch you and you find yourself in every single one (at least my beloved girlfriend and me this went for). I could now tell stories where, when we heard this fantastic LP but I'll spare you, this is mine. On this record twelve unique grenades which Mr.GuitarMan wrote in a fit of melancholy aggressiveness and I can understand every single feelin'. Believe me, I say this not because I like him, this is pure magic and there are cartainly a few on this fucking planet who can do that. Well, my life hangs through and this sound kicks me further forward! Fat thanks to Lars which brought me to the idea to post this album here because he missed it and was amazed....me too. Includes all cover scans and ripped in glorious 192 kBit/s. Get It!!

WIPERS - In Nürnberg 1987

Start today with a rare one and it's always a pleasure for me listen to: Wipers. Fantastic live recording from Portland's best, I love this band. Unnecessary to write more words. The song selection is perfect, sound is ok and with a total playin' time of 74 minutes simply superb. I'm sure that those who hear the combo for the first time look for a few plates, I promise: it's worth! Puuhhh, I'm lazy writing now, the gig yesterday was too intense. I guess I'm going to spend the day in bed now, post a little and rip a LP and of course soccer... I love Saturdays, enjoy!

WIPERS - Land Of The Lost 1986

Happy Birthday my Love! I still miss you and the today posts are all dedicated to you.

Just like last year on this day, it is tradition to honor a band that has made punk rock history and their sound was always around us and the Wipers are my absolute favorite band from the States. I recommend to buy any other album without hesitation. Land Of The Lost (review) shows a new phase of the band. The songs are still strong but I miss a bit of the rough & snotty sound of the early recordings. Without doubt, the fourth album is another highlight with some energy and should be in every record collection. I guess that see some so. Also recommended Sage's two solo albums Straight Ahead and Sacrifice For Love. He played all acoustic, electric and bass guitar parts, only accompanied by a drummer. A great musician. Enjoy.

Now I have to do things I have to do today & I come back with some jewels. Watch out!

MUFF POTTER - Bordsteinkantengeschichten 2000

Back in 1993 anyone gave me the demo tape "Bambule - Kleine Geschichten" from this German punk band from Rheine and meantime I've lost it. But I was pleased with their music and I bought their records. Muff Potter describe their style of music as Angry Pop Music, influenced by English and American Indie-/Punkrock like Hüsker Dü, Wipers, Leatherface, but also of German bands like Slime, ...But Alive, Boxhamsters or EA80. In their early days they played Punkrock with profound lyrics without striking or strongly politically phrases. That's what I like, direct in your face!!!! Was the sound during their first records a bit scrapy the band gets with every album musically better & better and in my opinion their first three albums are still angry, desperate, honest, snotty and simply delicate. And by listen to the fourth, I suddenly lost my interest, something had gone, I don't know what but I never come in with the new stuff. You probably know that? Kinda like cycling without a saddle, beer without alcohol, a pale facade... Anyhow, Bordsteinkantengeschichten was finally out and I was eager and it's their best record to date. I remember how often the platte runs up and down, every fuckin' time. They recorded a lot songs for this album and two songs doesn't find a place on the album and were released as 7inch, called the Potthoff EP, spiced up with a witty outro. Both released on the bands own label Huck's Plattenkiste. Every song is great; my favourites are 'Take A Run At The Sun', 'Das Siegerlied', 'Unkaputtbar' and 'An Der Bordsteinkante'. If you have a wire to the bands mentioned above then you must listen to Muff Potter. Salut!!!

V/A - A Small Retrosperspective (Live!) 2019

A new product from WDM Records and because April is dedicated to Live posts grew the idea of a superb compilation with recordings that I found here and there or slumbered on my hard disk. Preferably with bands that I have partially experienced and I often put on my turntable. I think the result can be heard and seen, and especially the artwork of old tickets has been buzzing in my mind for a long time, it has brought back a lot of fantastic memories, it was nice! V/A - Killed By Death 1989

With this record the Killed By Death (Motörhead 1984) serie is born and stands today for brilliant punkrock of the glory late 70s-early 80s days. Everyone knows today what is meant. This copy was released 500 times, later re-released without the Beastie Boys tracks. I guess, I'm not the only one who is grateful for this serie, and I think the makers have not thought it would so fuckin' bang in and become lots of followers. Sure, all these records are bootlegs and the bands never seen any royalties, you can think what you want, but I think it was a good idea because many bands don't exist or the members are out of sight. Anyway, ultimately offer the plates a fantastic overview of what was cool that time and the originals are long sold out and therefore a good thing. Well, let's see when there is a new release comin' along.

1.I Hate Music - THE MAD
2.Hillside Strangler - HOLLYWOOD SQUARES

Start today with a rare cool compilation with Portland bands and all songs were recorded live at 29.October 1979 and released via Trap Records, Greg Sage old label. Damn hot stuff and this record has mostly offers of $ 100, !! Of course far exaggerated in my opinion. DIRE STRAITS - Live @ the BBC 22.07.1978

New week and I'll start with something completely different, that means no punk rock but just as brilliant and when we talk about solid rock with corresponding soft elements, I can't get past this band and these guys fascinate me with their melodic and playfully impressive music, like the Wipers or EA80Live @ the BBC is a live album by the Dire Straits which was released in 1995 but the songs were recorded on 22.07.1978 at BBC Studios in London and involved were Mark (vocals/guitars), David & Hal (guitars), John (bass), Pick (drums), Alan (keys), with one track recorded on 31.January 1981 for the BBC TV program The Old Grey Whistle TestThe album features one unreleased song, "What's The Matter Baby?", co-written by Mark and his brother David. The riffs and general structure of that song were largely recycled for the song "Lady Writer" from the band's second album Communiqué, which may explain why it was never re-recorded in the studio. Check out their '82 album Love Over Gold which is also superb.

ANGESCHISSEN - @ Hamburg/Störtebeker 21.12.1994

Here is an amazing live recording from Angeschissen, a Hamburg combo which existed from 1984 to 1988 and they were one of the influential and stylistic punk bands of the Hamburg scene in the 80s and consisted of: Jens (vocals), Christian (guitars), Daniel (bass) and Stephan (drums + vocals). Christian was guitarist of Slime from 1980 until his first dissolution, where he had played together with Stephan; he was also drummer of Torpedo Moskau. Both brought hardcore punk into the style that hit American influences like Wipers and Rites Of Spring. In addition to singer Jens, Stephan also wrote some of the lyrics. The musical style of the band can be described as powerful dirty snotty melodic punkrock which is, in my opinion, live more intense and dynamic as on plate. In 1987 they released their first EP 'Angst Macht Keinen Lärm' via Buback. A year later comes the first longplayer, Angeschissen, with twelve goodies out and it was exclusively as vinyl record released. Then the band was supported by the studio guitarist Atli Grund and a split slab with Rachut's second band Das Moor came out also in 1988, shortly after the band was carried to the grave. In 1997 the Hamburger label Schiffen released a double album with all the recordings, this time also on CDFollow-up projects by Jens were then Blumen Am Arsch Der Hölle, Dackelblut, Oma Hans and Kommando Sonne-Nmilch. So this is an excellent live document in a very good quality and I saw them a few times and I like to remember their great, impulsive and funny performances. Their only important compilation contributions are on the great Hamburg '88 album by Bitzcore.

V/A - Killed By Dentistry #1 2000

From me a very long sought piece of vinyl and now I can finally put it from my Wanted List, the rarest KBD compilation around and this awesome record was pressed in an edition of 200 copies with only bands from the English language area of our beautiful planet. Each copy had a  unique "blood" splattered cover and if you believe the rumors outside a crazy dentist have fabricated this one. I think it rather less but perhaps comes a judge or astronaut to the same idea. A damn cool selection of some well know songs and obscure scree provide absolute listening pleasure. So the weekend can begin.

1.Idiot Boy - DUM DUM BOYS
2.Fighting In The USA - SINS
3.Picture My Face - TEENAGE HEAD
4.Ode To Mr Ed - PREVARICATORS
5.World War III - THE NUNS

THE ESTRANGED - Static Thoughts 2008

Yesterday I was at a gig from The Outcasts and it was a damn cool evening. Superb action and I want to post a record from them but I have nothing, haha....what a disgrace! Well, instead this great one: The Estranged are a post-punk band from Portland, Oregon. They started out in 2006. They play dark and foreboding guitar driven music with a relentless sense of urgency in a similar vein to The Wipers, Wire, Joy Division and The Cure. With their 1st album Static Thoughts, The Estranged attempt to combine the volatile combination of post-punk and punk with positive results on the whole. The album could have been a disaster on the scale of the Hindenburg, but instead is a balanced combination of contemporary post-punk songs that rely on traditional punk rock’s finer cornerstones - two to three minute numbers that are fast, simple, catchy, and - in this case - bleak. Indeed, Static Thoughts is more than a throwback to a deceased genre; The Estranged cultivate their bleak post-punk sound with a heavy lean on punk rock giving the often angsty music a much needed rainy day. Crossing musical genre’s is a risky but this album is clever, quick and done with so much gusto so that the crossover is not even felt. (Justin) Great record!

COCKTAILBAR STAMMHEIM - s/t LP 2011

An interesting duo called Cocktailbar Stammheim comes from Düsseldorf and the band consists of Christian (vocals/guitars) and Alex (vocals/guitars/drums) and they make amazing music, and besides Klotzs, they're the only duo I know, and that alone is remarkable. This record is their debut and was released in an edition of 500 copies, plus 100 (different artwork) for P.Trash Club members only! Songs between the beauty of failure with an angry smile, anecdotes about the stupid society, and personal views of the global threat, all wrapped up in a scratchy catchy sound how I love, definitely not a summer record. Label info: "These two trashcan-shakers were already spilling their rot-gut Punkrock as Bud White on the Killed By Trash Vol.2 compilation and now decided to open up the Cocktailbar Stammheim for everybody who doesn’t want to sip that fancy-schmancy hipster sound through a narrow-minded straw anymore. These fourteen songs are as honest as Asbach and Cola with which you flush down the ugliness of a sheeple society drinking Wodka & RedBull and running for another season of Big Brother on fucking TV. Two guitars, two feet stomping on the drums and the love for the Wipers are the base for the Bar in which these fine German songs are shaken and stirred in the best Kommando Blumen Am Angeschissen Arsch Von Oma Hans way, refined with a little shot of EA80 and a dirty dash of Superhelicopter and served with a crying angry face. Though this may probably seem to be an untypical release for the P. Trash catalog, but this record has heart and soul and every swig of it runs ardently down our dusty throats, and that’s the way we like it!" - Me too Peter (R.I.P.)

TORPEDO MOSKAU - Malenkaja Rabota 1984

TORPEDO MOSKAU were formed by former members of SLIME, TARGETS & NAPALM and their first apppear with two songs on the compilation Keine Experimente II which was released as well on Weird System, including famous bands such as EA80, Neurotic Arseholes, CHAOS-Z or CRETINS, and a song on the great Life Is A Joke Vol.2 compilation (international bands). The tunes by Torpedo Moskau reminds a little of Wipers and with their psycho-demanding lyrics the four Hamburgs drive at the usual beer & anarchy lyrics of many German-punk bands of the 80s by far. When i first heard the LP, it has me equally excited and for me a milestone in German punk culture. Includes all artwork.
