AESTHETICS - Accept. Except. Not Nothing Negative EP 1981

The Aesthetics were founded in Westminster/California and they consisted of Seph (vocals), Paul (guitars), Gino (bass), Jim (drums) and this is their only EP on Psychobud with four hectic tracks that shine with shrill guitars and a very stuttering rhythm. When I search for this rare EP, I keep coming across the term 'Art Punk'. What is that? I can't classify this term, but when I listen to the music I can't discover anything about it. Sure, the guys don't celebrate an ordinary mid-tempo sound and catchy is different, and a six minute song on a 7Inch as well, but is that the reason for naming it that way? I don't know, for me it's a very good Punk record with snotty vocals and brilliant music, played a little differently but cool. Maybe it's still too early to discuss this further, and the four weren't invited to compilations at the time, but the detectives paid tribute to the Aesthetics on their selfmade CD-R and that's good.

THE FIX - Vengeance 7'' 1981

The Fix was a short-lived band of less than two years and had their first vinyl release on legendary Midwestern label Touch And Go. This is their debut (200 copies) with two fantastic short killer tracks and a review can tell you more about it: "Faster and younger than the Ramones, these boys from Lansing, Michigan give us two sides of vinyl and finish it all in two minutes and thirty-nine seconds. This is so fast that you won't even have a chance to sit down, so you better dance with your turntable. This is basic, no frills hard Punk and proves once again that Punk still goes on five years after the initial English explosion." (Sinclair Elrod, Coolest Retard 14, June 1981) - A year later their second and final EP Jan's Room followed before breaking up in early 1982. Really amazing they didn't made an album with their potential, I'm sure it would have been a masterpiece. In 1990, German label Lost & Found Records released a double LP called Cold Days, compiling all six songs from the two singles, the compilation track, four outtakes & twelve live cuts. Excellent Stuff!

V/A - Spit On Your Grave! Vol.1 2004

Looking pretty professional at first glance, but Buried Alive Recordings is the name of a bootleg label from Spain and they have released two CD's with rare American KBD stuff from 7Inches 1978-1983, included some rare tracks and others which always used for such CompilationsSparsely held to infos, only the most necessary, release year, covers and nothing more (b.t.w. dizzy cover 😵). All in all, I think it's a successful selection and absolutely worth listening to, and it's not expensive to buy either. With that, another chapter weekend is heralded and volume 2 follows if you live well-behaved and uninhibitedSo come on, you Maniacs!

V/A - Lung Cookies (A National Collection) 1983

All right friends, today one of the rarest records that exist on this planet and how many copies were pressed is unknown. What is certain is that it was never re-released and acquiring it in mint quality with the 12-page (photocopied) insert with full page from each band will cost you a few euros. This awesome compilation features eleven bands from the States and was made via Amphetamine Reptile record label owner Tom Hazelmyer and is a joint release between Smoked Seven Records (California) and 'Your Flesh' fanzine (Minnesota), 'Lung Cookies' logo created by Pushead. This babe is a find on my hard drive and how I come to this now, well... while searching for the perfect wave I would say. This sweetheart wants to be discovered and I wish you a pleasant listening pleasure with much early Punk history & pre-grunge roots on this record.

ACCELERATORS - s/t EP 1984

One more rare 7Inch, which was reissued by Manufactured Recordings in 2015, original released via Mutha Records with six shots by the Accelerators, a Central Jersey based Punkband whose brand of fast and loud "PowerPop" music has made them local club favorites since the 1980s. Largely influenced by the Ramones and the Smithereens, the Accelerators’ music is defined by strong melodies, unique irreverent lyrics and powerful drumming. The band was started by singer/bass player/songwriter Ron in 1981 with talented but troubled lead guitarist John T. Hansen, and backed by Dave Ross on drums. Their brand of fast and loud music made them local club favorites throughout the late 1980s. Represented on some good compilations and unfortunately I can't offer you one yet, eieieiei..... Well, that'll be fine and for a fucking Monday evening post anyway enough.

THE NOTHINGS - Alot To Learn 12'' 1983

Welcome to another rare slab from California with catchy powerful music by the Nothings from Los Angeles which were active in the early Eighties and this is their lone release and reissued 1999 with two bonus tracks (jojo). The band consisted of Rob (vocals), Phil (guitars & vocals), Lenny (bass), Bob (drums) and this five track 12Inch was released via Augustus Records. A short review: "If you thought the Sex Pistols sound was dead in 1983, you’ve got “a lot to learn,” because this Southern California group is the mirror image of the Pistols stylistically. They’ve got the same crunching rhythm attack and wall-of-sound guitar on the Rotten one’s vocals are missing. Highly recommended for nostalgia buffs." (Jeff Bale, MRR #10 • December 1983) - He describes their music perfect and the four are the American version of the Londoners, in every way. Oh Yeah, a fucking great five cruncher! They didn't get invited on compilations in their active lifespan, presumably because the songs always exceeded the three-minute mark but I think, they deserve full attention.

HAND GRENADES - Demo To London 7'' 1979

There are certainly hotter records than the one that follows up now, but somehow the slab impose itself and after listening to it several times, the choice fell on this inconspicuous combo. Once upon a time 1979 in New York, home base of the Hand Grenades, and the four piece consisted of Bob (vocals/guitar), Dave (guitars), Steve (bass), Jon (drums). And that is the artifact of their long lost D.I.Y. nugget; A little piece of action which features two obscure tracks from their only 7Inch which they self-released in an undetermined quantity with omitted information. This kept these recordings hard-to-find for years. Last Laugh Records did a little research and released this Munro in 2018 with two more songs in a filigree 12" format, listen. That's is folks!... but wait... I should mention that the flip was used for the mega-fucking-rare Killed By 7Inch #3 compilation. And now off to the weekend... 😸

V/A - Vertigo - Synth Punk Blasts 1978-1984 [2020]

When I took notice of this record I bought it immediately, on the one hand because the song selection is great, the time of release, the bands (more than 50% unknown) and I love international stuff, and then limited, so damn... why waiting?? Info: Vertigo is a compilation of SynthPunk, mainly from little known bands. This first volume will be available (vinyl only, limited to 300 copies) on December 15th, features American, German, British & Swedish bands. The term SynthPunk has been popularized in recent years, or rather vulgarized, becoming a genre that mostly describes electronic or new wave bands. This compilation highlights anger and nihilism punk with the violent rhythm of a fingering that assails a keyboard. Here, no synth pop, no new wave, no experimental music. This could be the sequel to the Killed By Synth compilation which is also led by raw razor shape synthesizers.

brilliant review: "Well, first things first: compared to the unrelated but similarly-themed Killed by Synth comp. that preceded it, this new comp at least succeeds in only including bands that actually used keyboards, so no BIG BOYS, OIL TASTERS, or BOB this time around. In true KBD tradition, the focus here is on the the flipped-out and the fucked-up in the words of the compiler(s), “no synth pop, no new wave, no experimental music” and despite (presumably) being named after the SCREAMERS song, Vertigo skips over the usual synth-punk suspects in favor of some deeper and less obvious cuts. Highlights include the Bloodstains-via-Red Snerts snot of “Sophistication” by PLASTIC IDOLS (Houston’s answer to DOW JONES & THE INDUSTRIALS), organ-smeared mutant new wave with wild femme vocals from Santa Cruz’s SCHEMATIX on “Nothing Special,” the dark, frenetic end-times robo-pulse of “Happy Funeral” by Sweden’s KITCHEN & THE PLASTIC SPOONS, the jarring juxtaposition of sparse minimal wave and intense, unhinged vocals in German from DER KÜNFTIGE MUSIKANT’s “Es Ist Kalt”… also, totally bold move with the inclusion of “Food Fight” by the VILLAGE PEOPLE (yes, really) in the post-disco early ’80s, they revamped their image to pass as New Romantics and recorded this one-off, utterly dumb but kind of amazing slice of PLASTIC BERTRAND esque punksploitation with the former “construction worker” channeling his inner Tomata Du Plenty, now officially enshrined as the first dollar bin KBD bonzer. Not a predictable comp by any means, and that’s very much to its credit. (Erika Elizabeth, MRR #454 • March 2021)

This blast works fine and rubs really against my nervous head. Have a relaxed time with this hot fucking stuff and a pleasant time travel!

THE TURN UPS - Turn Up 1980

Second album by the Turn Ups from Pennsylvania on Cracked Records and on this are the three, Stevinyl (vocals/guitars), R. "Fingers" (bass), Joe (drums), without Punk legend Billy Synth at work and Turn Up shine with fifteen lo-fi garage style smashers. By 2000 they made three albums, some compilation contributions and as far as I know, still active and performing here & there. The whole thing is highly recommended, crazy guitars with an excellent singer.. perfect for breakfast. Enjoy!

- Great Thx to Fredrik -

OUTLETS - Best Friends 7'' 1982

The weekend is here and as I have already told you, I want to go to an event today and since I have to leave in two hours, quick a little musical highlight: An acclaimed live band from Boston were the Outlets, a four piece which were mainly active in the Eighties, consisting of David (vocals), his brother Rick (guitars), Mike (bass) and Walter (drums). The Outlets attained success in the greater Boston music scene but failed to gain national attention when they signed with Restless/Enigma in 1985, despite modest critical acclaim including a recommendation from Billboard. They are best known for the single "Knock Me Down", a regional hit. They released three albums and a few 7Inches and this goodie has two likeable rocking mid-tempo numbers at the start with a crisp guitar and reminds me a lot of any commercial rock band, and I don't mean that in a negative way. Guests on a few compilations and I don't know if the boys are still on the road but their music is fun, definitely listenable and a good start to freedom...... and off I go!

RKL - It's A Beautiful Feeling! EP 1984

Beautiful debut 7Inch by RKL (Rich Kids On LSD) from Montecito/California and they were associated with the "Nardcore" scene that evolved out of nearby Oxnard. Their music expanded over the years from West Coast Hardcore to a mix of Hardcore with Rock & Metal elements. This style, along with touring, made them very popular on the European scene, especially among skaters in the 1980s and 1990s. Formed 1982 and on this EP are Jason (vocals), Chris (guitars), Vince (bass), Bomber (drums) jamming, this seven sucker was released via Super Seven Records and the band's name came about as a mere fluke from some light hearted criticism. According to vocalist Jason in a 2002 interview with Thrasher magazine: “it happened that some guy said, 'ha, those kids will never be anything, they're just a bunch of Rich Kids On LSD, man.' The first party we played we didn't have a name for the band, so we put that one on the flier and it just stuck.” The beanie boy logo was born one night while Bomer and Jason were being tattooed. Bomer was attempting to draw a dragon pattern. On seeing the drawing, Jason commented, "Yeah dude, it's Cecil! Where's Beanie?" Dan Sites was sitting alongside drawing a flyer for a show supporting Suicidal Tendencies in Oxnard and drew a beanie guy jumping from a building. Beanie boy was born. They released six albums, a few compilations and three members are unfortunately no longer with us and you can read for yourself when and why. I had their Rock'N'Roll Nightmare record, but had to sell it early, a tragic loss. Well, what remains? R.K.L. had a vehement influence on the American underground scene and will not be forgotten, like many others.

8TH ROUTE ARMY - Think For Yourself EP 1982

Now a small package of three 7Inches (Think For Yourself '82, No Leaders '84 & Outside My Window '85) for you by the Eighth Route Army, a four piece from Northampton, formed in early Eighties and lasting until the end of the decade and the band consisted of Johnny (vocals), Mark (guitars/synth), Jim (bass/vocals), John (drums) and all were released via 1 Dimensional Records. While the first two are quite decent mid-tempo goodies, the third becomes extremely poppy and almost boring, really amazing what motives such a change entails. I can't explain myself with the best will in the world, especially the album Nihilist Olympics ('85) doesn't even come close to going in this direction. And a solid review confirms the debut EP as really strong: "This EP features an eclectic mix of material, Clash rock with horns and slick backing vocals; biting Punk with clever lyrics about future "Punk" politicians ("Vice Presidente"); and a scathing critique of military recruitment set on slower, Chelsea-style material ("Professional Killer"). Multidimensional and thoughtful." (Jeff Bale, MRR #7 • July/August 1983) You see, change is not always an advantage but still necessary, it just needs to be considered accordingly. Enough philosophizing, I want to look for a new desktop today, otherwise I'll turn off.

VKTMS - Compilation 1997

Terrific compilation by Broken Rekids and this is a solid tribute for VKTMS from San Francisco and this little dittie features their three 7Inches and one LP along with three bonus live tracks, plus the track off of the SF Underground EPAllow me excellent info from discogs: "VKTMS got together in 1978 when Mohammed Obead introduced Louis (drums) to Jay (guitar). After a while they added George (bass) and began searching for a singer. Nyna (R.I.P.) answered a bulletin board ad. Her intense energy and already developed lyric skills impressed them immediately. The band began gigging and shortly after put out what has become to be called the Midget EP, a highly collectible four song record. Shortly afterward bass player Steve joined. He is on the SF Underground EP. Right after that John joined on guitar and occasional keyboard. Few bands played the Mabuhay Gardens more times, and most other Northern California venues too. Playing a lot of gigs with relevant renowned American Punk bands in winter of 1981-1982 after releasing a single on 415 Records VKTMS began recording an album which sat in the can until 1994 when the band reunited. Re-releasing the album and previous recordings on CD on Broken Rekids (1997) helped give validation around the world.

VKTMS continued until Nyna passed away from cancer in 2000 after a very brave five year battle. In 2010 they started up again with Terry and Sophie on vocals. First came a Benefit for the San Francisco Homeless Youth Alliance which acted as springboard for the band's current state. In September 2012 they were booked to play the SF Punk Reunion with fifteen bands from the original era. This opened up a floodgate of show offers. In 2013 alone VKTMS did awesome shows with the Dead Kennedys, T.S.O.L., and the Weirdos. 2014 brought shows with the Sonics, The Members and more. 2015 brought a return show at a SF punk reunion concert, called this time SF Punk Renaissance, this time with even more bands, with Cheetah Chrome headlining. In 2016, they made it into the legendary Fillmore Auditorium, playing once again with the Dead Kennedys. Just before Covid hit VKTMS played an incredible show with the Avengers. Then right afterward with another close band MDC."

Now enjoy this explosive anthology by a great Punk combo!

FINAL CONFLICT - Ashes To Ashes 1987

Wild spirit and rage, these two characteristics are distinctive for the furious sound of Final Conflict, a southern California Hardcore combo which were founded 1985 by Ron (vocals), Jeff (guitars), Warren (bass), Dave (drums) and their first demo War?War?War? is considered an important artifact and they produced a cassette containing the kind of blazing riffs and politically-charged lyrics many punks thought were over and done after being abandoned by the previous, spiky-haired generation. No wonder, a certain gentleman named Pushead wanted the band for his little label and so it happened that in 1987 their crushing debut Ashes To Ashes was released on PusmortTheir perseverance and dedicated fan base helped spark a Los Angeles and Orange County Punkrock revival of sorts during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Unfortunately it is one of the records that are no longer in my closet and so you have to use this rip, but I guarantee unlimited listening pleasure. The band has released two more albums and as far as I know are still on the road.

V/A - Electrocute Your Cock! Vol.1 2021

It's finally starting today, the 2022 World Cup, and I'm a little happy because I'm a big fan of this ball sport, even if it's going to be the most controversial. On the other hand, the following compilation, which you can now enjoy, is not controversial and there is a suitable description for it that sums it all up. "Taking its title from the legendary brainless anthem by Vom, it's not hard to imagine the contents of this compilation. On offer are eighteen tracks of pure, untamed, moronic, KBD-style-Punk in all its glorious rawness. Focusing mainly on the US - but also presenting bands from the UK, Denmark and the Philippines - and spanning the period between 1977 and 1984, this is an absolute must for all Killed By Death enthusiasts. Punkrock done the way it was meant to, shameless, raw and annoying. You know you need it!" That's the way it is folks, maybe there will be a second Volume coming and until then enjoy the frosty sunday with hot lost nuggets.

ADOLESCENTS - Welcome To Reality EP 1981

Let's continue with a great band and their debut, I think, a three song killer EP: Welcome To Reality by the Adolescents and this sucker was released in October 1981 on Frontier Records. Recorded after guitarist Rikk Agnew left the group, it was their only release recorded with guitarist Steve Roberts. The band broke up in August 1981, and when the EP was released two months later it was not well received (damn ignoramuses). When the Adolescents re-formed five years later, a new lineup re-recorded all three songs for their reunion album Brats In Battalions in 1987I think it's a successful and important record that paved the way for the Californians to become an essential band. And they are still on the road and never tire of writing more great songs. Definitely on stage a pleasure!

DEAD KENNEDYS - @ The Farm, San Francisco 24.05.1985

Now for a current sad occasion a superb live recording by the fantastic Dead Kennedys and this record is one of a three vinyl record set called DK 40D.H. Peligro, drummer the band, crashed at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, 2022 and succumbed to his head injury shortly thereafter. How he did it remains a fucking mystery. Fact is, the world is losing another great musician, even if he testified against Jello Biafra in the legal dispute between the former members and Jello after the dissolution, he will not be forgotten. So today's post is dedicated to him and I think a live record is just the right choice, because his skills and dynamic are here unpolished and demonstrate how important he was for the music of the best American Punk band ever in my opinion. Now enjoy these fifteen crispy recordings, pay your respect and remember him positively... R.I.P.

DH Peligro's Mom/Goons Of Hazzard/Hellnation/This Could Be Anywhere/Soup Is Good Food/Chemical Warfare/Macho Insecurity/A Growing Boy Needs His Lunch/Forest Fire/Moon Over Marin/Jock-O-Rama/Stars And Stripes Of Corruption/Second Encore/MTV Get Off The Air/Holiday In Cambodia

ANGRY SAMOANS - The 90's Suck & So Do You 1998

Back from the dead, the Angry Samoans with new line-up, Metal Mike (vocals/guitar), Alison (guitar/bass), Tony & Julia (bass), Bill (drums) and this is their first studio album since 1988 on Triple X/Bad Trip Records with eight songs in thirteen minutes. Well, it's no smash like their Eighties recordings, but if you're a friend of the Angrys you'll love this slab, as I do... appropriate to the emotional state of the nation. I guess I'll lie down again so I don't miss the match versus Dortmund later. Good night!

MFD - Music For The Deaf 1987

Debut album by MFD from Washington, D.C. and the four, David (vocals), Richard (guitars), Tom (bass), Brock (drums) are also always welcome in my world. Twelve short melodic straight-ahead pieces with a real nasty, jagged guitar sound which hiss around your ears and where everything fitsThis record is just fun to listen to and kicks your troubles into the universe of the night with a big head start, I guarantee you. And especially at four in the morning when your heart is pounding and your head creates only shit. Check it out!
