V/A - Rot In Hell 1984

Ei Di Weil, let's stay in an enjoyable mood and come to a compilation from my favorite British label Rot Records. In its short-lived tenure, they've released amazing records, including half a dozen compis, and to date none have disappointed me. On the one hand, this is due to bands that sent their demos there and can the songs therefore only be found there, and on the other hand to the unknown status of them. This healthy combination is daring and far from geared towards sales, also limited, I guess 1000 copies were pressed. Even Step-1 Music liked this stuff and re-released it on CD in 1996. A record deal then jumped out for some bands and became better known a little beyond their latitude. Rot In Hell is full with splendid music, as it should be for a little D.I.Y. label and you will like it.

V/A - Captain Oi! Presents Hits 2002

This nice compilation from Captain Oi! Records came for free to an order I made twenty years ago and as you can see, here are only renowned bands present, who set high standards in the early English Punk/Oi! movement and released some numerous classics, which shouldn't be missing in any well-assorted record collection. Seven small treats were specially served to let us know that new stuff is available and that there is no lethargy on the island. A nice idea I think. Especially since you don't always know when new records from your favorite bands are coming out, at least that's how I feel.

1.Natural Born Loser - ARGY BARGY
2.Fragile - U.K. SUBS
3.Little Black Sheep - THE ADICTS
4.Safe Haven - ANGELIC UPSTARTS
5.Apathie In The U.K. - SPECIAL DUTIES
6.Rattle My Cage - GUITAR GANGSTERS
7.Hell To Pay - THE BUSINESS

DIE ANGST - Die Angst In Euch Ist Die Angst In Uns 2012

The following band is always a welcome guest in my theater. 3 out of 26 reasons a) we're talking about Die Angst from Rathenow and one of my faves, b) their powerful, sombre music turns me on with its driving dynamic extra long elegiac bass runs, scrappy 80s guitars and refreshing heaviness, that's the sound that keeps me awake, and c) a new 7inch is coming out these days on their own Moon Records label (order/listen now via bandcamp) with two crackers in the typical Angst style. On this superb six track mini CD are Seve (vocals/bass), Kilian (vocals/guitars) and Jensen (drums) making music... splendid music. The only thing I have to complain: the slabs are too short. I've barely arrived and after thirty minutes the journey is already over. I mean, it's different with a hardcore record because of the number of tracks, after that I'm inspired and it's good. With the Brandenburgers I'm on my trip in the middle of nowhere and waiting for the bus, you know what I mean? 'ZackBumBäng' - Well, I'll get in again. Enjoy all the wafts of fog and don't miss the next episode when it says again: Mommy, I don't have a bus ticket!

NEW ORDER - @ The Venue, Blackpool U.K. 30.08.1982

It's strawberry season again my friends and for the past few days I've been enjoying 500 fresh grams of them, that I can buy here on the side of the road from a local farmer. Even today, not exactly cheap but fresher. Yesterday I told you, that I have a lot of housework to do and today I finished Part 2 and I can tell you that cleaning windows is exhausting, especially when they are big. It's an old building where I live but I would never want to live anywhere else. For musical accompaniment I had this fantastic soundboard recording of New Order's Blackpool performance from 1982 in and I thought: why not post it? The sound quality is okay throughout and I like the early recordings of the four because I think they combine a perfect fusion of Joy Division & New Order and some of their new stuff is also to my liking and runs temporarily on my turntable. Nine songs but that's enough for an entertaining pastime. And now I want to go out in the sun.

V/A - The Master Tape Vol.2 2xLP 1983

I hope you're not fed up with awesome stuff from the Eighties because I can present now a rare, fantastic, famous, splendid and delicate double album and this is only possible because the network of maniacs works brilliantly. This damn cool monster compilation on Affirmation is the final & second Master Tape after the awesome Volume 1 from 1982 and it's again full with exclusive songs/bands (mostly from the midwestern US) who show solid potential, wrote catchy tunes and almost released little further material, surely no surprise by the competition in this country, but that's why compilations are devised, they too can gather a small fan base around them and get and deserve attention in other regions/countries. Forty-three examples have been captured on vinyl, of which "End Result" doesn't really fit on these records, at least not with meBut as always, it's a matter of taste and, as always, who fucking care. Open a beer and get high on these hot goodies as I do.

V/A - Skloom Al Komul! 2021

Well, as you can see, my old schoolmate Teddy is more than happy with his new girlfriend and he asked me to put some of his favorite songs together and share them with you. Of course, I would like to comply his request, even if I hardly find time and my computer soon crackes off, I have taken the trouble to create the following compilation from the extensive repertoire of his hard drive and now finally present it as the ninth release on WDM RecordsHe chose a healthy mix of old and new classics and I am very satisfied with his selection. I'm responsible for the artwork, which I think is excellent, and all this together makes this little musical composition another highlight on this damn uninteresting Blog. Wherever you are now, enjoy the days off, make the most of it and always remember, You're Not Alone!

NOCTURNAL PROJECTIONS - Studio Recordings 2018

All right friends, for the weekend a band that I appreciate very much and whose music is extra class, a few basics: Formed in Stratford, near New Plymouth, New Zealand in 1981, Nocturnal Projections was the explosive project of legendary and prolific brothers Graeme and Peter Jefferies (who would later form This Kind of Punishment before launching their solo careers), who along with friends Brett Jones and Gordon Rutherford, created some of the most energetic and influential avant-garde punk rock to emerge from the country.

Largely ignored during their tenure (but revered and referenced in the years after their breakup) and often compared to UK contemporaries like Joy Division, Comsat Angels, The Fall, or Wire, Nocturnal Projections stood well apart - never enjoying the luxuries of unlimited studio time, music videos or international fame, the NPs possessed a driven, rough-hewn serrated edge that cut through the lot comparisons to the UK post-punk exports of the era. They were ahead of their time, completely singular, and for those that had the benefit of seeing Nocturnal Projections play live – formative, with a dedicated cult following to this day.

As residents of New Plymouth’s Lion Tavern during their first year as a band, they perfected their soaring, impactful live set locally (often as the only band, without an opener and 3 hours to fill!) before heading off to Auckland in January of 1982, performing with bands like The Fall, John Cooper Clarke, and New Order at venues like The Mainstreet Cabaret, The Rumba Bar and Reverb Room. *The band recorded three EPs at Stebbing Studios in Auckland: The self-titled and self-released 7” single released April 1st of 1982, with the “Another Year” 12Inch following later that year. Their self-titled three song 12” was recorded in 1983, and released by the band posthumously that June, after the band called it quits. The Jefferies would move on and regroup with Rutherford and sound engineer Andrew Frengley shortly after the NPs fell apart to work under the This Kind of Punishment banner.

“Complete Studio Recordings” comprises the three original Nocturnal Projections studio records, direct to board recordings on a 24 track and not a synthesizer to be found! This release is a crucial part of New Zealand’s punk history, remastered and collected for existing fans and new audiences. Frantic and fast punk anthems like Nerve Ends In Power Lines, Isn’t That Strange, and In Purgatory are a shot in the gut, while slower, more introspective tracks like Difficult Days and You’ll Never Know reveal what the band had in store later with TKP. Nocturnal Projections are hard to pin down: bright, slashing, and prominent guitars with driving solid basslines and drums in tight lockstep, all with Peter Jefferies’ urgent signature baritone vocals soaring alongside – the result is still perhaps the most energetic, unique, and fresh music to ever emerge from the post-punk scene.

One more great album Inmates In Images was released in 2018 and comprises the band’s best and rare material recorded right off the board at key gigs, capturing the unique and unbridled energy of Nocturnal Projections. And now: ENJOY!!

FORD'S FUZZ INFERNO - Deniers Of Fuzz Will Be Executed EP 2021

So dear folks, brand new stuff from the Waste environment and I already warned you that the follow-up band of Hans will record explosive material and today the wait is over and I can tell you: Simply Brilliant! A bit basics: "don't you just love these awesome punk tunes?! Then singalong with Mister Hans (vocals/guitars) and Mister Patrick (drums/guitars) and bang your fucking head to their lyrics, mostly about your stupid, hypocrite, pseudocorrect parents and all those other mindless consumers who have messed up our planet and now blame others. Fuck Them!" This is the announcement of Ford's Fuzz Inferno. They have recorded some totally awesome, completely fuzzed-up, ultra crushing punk nuggets for you and if any neighbor should complain, hit him on the skull with the plate. A review: “This is immediately catchy and likeable, proving you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to make something great. There is a timeless quality to these songs, and each concentrated capsule of punk joy sounds like it could have been written any time during the last fifty years. Highly recommended.” (MRR #461 - Oct. 2021) - I can hardly add anything to that, fantastic record from a combo that knows how to express itself brutally and implement this in an excellent sound. Fucking Great! B.T.W., a second EP will come soon, the release date is 17th January 2022, and you can already pre-order this via their bandcamp page. 🎶🎸🎶

FILM NOIR - Never Ending Dream 1986

A day of rest without a computer is a real relaxation and today I'm fully back, because the important match versus Mainz starts in good six hoursNow to a band that didn't much leave behind, but whose music shouldn't be forgotten: Film Noir, a new wave band from Athens and formed circa 1985 and one year later they released their debut mini-album Never Ending Dream on the essential Wipe Out Records label and it was the label's third release and the line-up consisted of: Maria (vocals), Costas (guitars/keyboards/vocals), Constantinos (bass), Vassilis (keyboards) and Spyros (drums). In 1987 Maria leaves the band in order to pursue a modeling career in Australia. 1990 the band released their second and final album entitled Portrait Of A Child via Aural Art Music Productions and the main vocals was done by Costas Sokialis. After this release the band disappeared. Unfortunately in 1996 Maria dies of cancer and the world has lost another beautiful voice which she impressively demonstrates on the six wonderful and darkly atmospheric songs. I think a woman's voice goes better with melodies like this, I listen more closely and float faster into my fantasy world, I hope, you do as well. In 2013 Eirkti re-released the debut with an extra 7Inch. Before I continue, I cycle to the farmer and get fresh strawberries.

V/A - Crack! Gozira Records 1978-1979

Today an interesting compilation from Japan and on this record it goes not wild and brutal, as we know it from the Punk bands there. Released via Gozira Records/Telegraph Records in 1983 and also numerous booted, this vinyl shows the new wave/punk side of the islanders and all of them have at least one single out which is difficult to get nowadays in Europe and overseas, small editions I think and therefore you had to be at a gig to get a record. Hence a nice idea from the label to release this famous record in the early 80s. I enjoy this slab very much and hope you will too. That's it for today from the sunny, frosty Hessenland!

NEW ORDER - Movement 1981

Exceptionally early this Wednesday and not really my time but somehow I want to introduce this slab, the extroverted debut of a band that has been with me since the early 80s: New Order, surely everyone of you knows well. They were formed 1980 by vocalist & guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris. Info: The band formed after the demise of Joy Division, following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis; they were joined by Gillian Gilbert on keyboards later that year. New Order's integration of post-punk with electronic and dance music made them one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s. They were the flagship band for Manchester-based independent record label Factory Records and its nightclub The Haçienda, and worked in long-term collaboration with graphic designer Peter Saville. The initial release as New Order was the single "Ceremony", backed with "In A Lonely Place". These two songs were written in the weeks before Curtis took his own life. With the release of Movement in November 1981, the band initially started on a similar route as their previous incarnation, performing dark, melodic songs, albeit with an increased use of synthesisers. They viewed the period as a low point, as they were still reeling from Curtis' death. Hook commented that the only positive thing to come out of the Movement sessions was that producer Martin Hannett had showed the band how to use a mixing board, which allowed them to produce records by themselves from then on. More recently, Hook indicated a change of heart: "I think Movement gets a raw deal in general really - for me, when you consider the circumstances in which it was written, it is a fantastic record." Numerous albums & singles have been released and none of them sound like the previous ones, that's the great thing about the band, they develop and try out the equipment that is available and Movement is the beginning of a long musical diversity. Great music from a great band.

V/A - Bloodstains Across Germany #2 1998

Last working day before my vacation, this year not in Crete or any Mediterranean region, thanks to fucking Corona, it's getting annoying and the new regulations even more. But what should we do? As long as research doesn't keep creating a vaccine, this shit keeps us back from free life and so is 2020 an extraordinary shit yearWell, let us better enjoy the loud dirty sound of the early wild punk days, so let's pull another fantastic Bloodstains compilation off the shelf and find Volume 2 with twenty-two German delicacies. Some songs overlap Volume 1 and why here again is a bit unfortunate, there are so many more rarities of German bands that they obviously haven't researched exactly. But I'm grateful that the detectives made the effort anyway... and you certainly as well. Now let the bands kicking, get this Friday quick behind us and looking forward to the weekend.

POWERAGE & COMPOS MENTIS - Backlash! EP 1987

Influenced by overseas bands such as Crass, Discharge and Chaos UK, Compos Mentis wrote politically charged songs that critiqued both mainstream New Zealand and the cliquey factions within the alternative music scene. Described by Simon Cottle of Anti-System zine as “New Zealand's ultimate political thrash band” Compos Mentis lasted for a good half of the 1980s at a time when a more politicised punk scene was emerging in Wellington. Compos Mentis began life in 1982 as the short lived Destructive Adolescents, a teenage punk band from the Hutt Valley suburb of Silverstream, formed by Craig and David A.. After the D.A's vocalist quit Peter Stitt and Heather joined the band playing their first gig at Craig's work Christmas do. By all accounts this went down with the largely older audience like a bucket of cold sick and they were forced to stop after a few songs. Shortly after this the band changed it's name to World War III for a brief period before opting for Compos Mentis which translates from Latin as “of sound mind”. Following this Peter left the band due to personality differences and Ben and Sean were recruited into the band briefly. At this time two other members, Simon and Grant, of Hutt Valley band Gotham City joined. The input from these two new members led to a tighter musical direction for the band and during 1986-1987 Compos Mentis released three 7” singles (one here), a tape compilation of early work dating back to 1984 and appeared on a number of compilations. Compos Mentis were a central band in the emergence of an openly politicized anarcho-punk scene that emerged in the 1980s. Songs such as Run for Shelter railed against Nazi-punks while Patricia Bartlett is an inspired rant against Lower Hutt's then self-appointed leader of the 'moral majority'. The band were also active in producing their own zine, Communicade.

Power Age formed in Durban, South Africa in June 1981. The first line-up was Spike (vocals), Brett & Brian (guitars), Dave (bass), Mark Pills (drums) & their first gig was on 3rd October 1981 supporting the Gay Marines. It was their first encounter with the police as well, as Spike got taken in, because some policemen didn't like his pink mohawk. In June '82 Spike arranged a benefit show and 6 punk bands played. The show was a great success. Straight after this show Brian and Dave left. Midge joined on bass and it proved better with one guitar, so it was kept to a four piece. In November '82 Mark left to go live in England. Rubin Rose (previously from South Africa’s first punk band Wild Youth and later Warspike) replaced him immediately and the band really started moving. In April '83 they put out their first 7" release ‘World War III/ Vengeance Of Youth’. At the same time Midge left the band due to musical differences. The band was stagnant for two months until Paddy joined on bass. He was a good friend of the band but had never played before, so it was like starting again. In '84 the two songs off the first 7" were released on the UK compilation ‘Beating The Meat’. At this time in Durban (and the whole of South Africa) the scene was virtually dead - Power Age were the only punk band. In June '84 they played the ‘Punk '84’ show with new bands Wild Justice and State Control. It was a fantastic success and the owner of the venue let them run it for punk shows. Things went well and a good number of bands sprung up and the scene started moving. In June '85 they put out a C-60 tape ‘Who Are You?’ - one side studio, the other live and also succeeded in getting a track ‘System’ onto a French compilation EP entitled ‘Single Ticket To Paradise’. November '85 saw the release of the now legendary 4-track EP ‘Stop Apartheid’ in France by Neg-FX Records. In May '86 the band put out another C-60 tape release ‘Ripe For Terror’. At the same time they did a benefit show for a friend in jail. The venue owner somehow heard that it was a benefit for the ANC, and called the police. The police came, smashed up the gig and it was over. Luckily no one was arrested. Then the saddest moment came... Rubin quit the band in June '86. He had warned he might have to leave due to mounting pressure from his bosses. Peter then joined on drums, but couldn't play, so the band were stagnant again for 3 months. In February '87 they put out the two song 7" tribute to Rubin ‘World Today/Waiting for the War’ (recorded in '84) on their new label Power Noize Records. At the same time Peter left to play with Screaming Foetus and their good friend Choppy replaced him. In April '87 Power Age released a 5-track EP entitled ‘The Last Dove’. June '87 saw the release of the EP ‘Backlash’, a split EP with New Zealand-band Compos Mentis released on Out Of Order Records as well as one track ‘Eat Wheat Not Meat’ on a USA compilation LP entitled ‘The ALF Is Watching And You Can't Escape’. Having played only 77 shows in their 7 year existence Powerage played their last show on the 29th of July 1988. This show was recorded and made available as the ‘Live In Durban’ LP. (source: upthepunks & discogs)

R.I.P. - No Te Muevas! 1987

To linger in southern Europe we meet R.I.P. a punk band from the Basque Country, exactly from Mondragon, one of the first punk bands that existed in the Iberian Peninsula: they are considered one of the most influential bands in punk and hardcore from Spain. Originally founded as Double Zero in 1980 by the Bolinaga brothers, joined with Portu as first singer. Then in 1981 Mallabi comes as fixed singer and so continued for two years doing various shows. Mallabi was doin' his compulsory military service and was temporarily replaced by the band's manager, Karlos "Muhammad" Agirreurreta, who after a fight with Mallabi, when he returned, became the definitive singer of the band, and they consolidated as such to the final formation -Jul, Txerra, Portu and Karlos were redefined as RIP.

Since 1983, the group produced independently several cassettes with live concerts in order to portray the shows of the band as it were, until 1984, the label Spansuls Records published the Zona Especial Norte 12'', a split EP with Eskorbuto. In 1985, RIP participated as first band in the Basque Rock festival in Barcelona on 29 November. In 1987, they released their only album No Te Muevas! (Don't Move!), on Discos Suicidas. Soon after, they separated in 1988 because of internal differences, but occasionally met, as happened in 1991 to the surprise of many, a music festival organized by Arrasate Press, in the town of Mondragon.

Finally, in September 1994, they had a reunion concert, which was followed by their 2nd record called HIESari Aurre Egiten!! which in Castilian means "Facing AIDS Live", with almost all the songs fromt the first album plus versions of British groups. In February 1997, unexpectedly died bassist Portu. He was replaced by his brother Xabi, who was commissioned to play concerts until the breakup of the band. Later, he joined the group Gatillazo. They contributed a song for the Eskorbuto tribute compilation Tren Con Destino Al Infierno in 2000. More songs were released on various compilations. In 2002, the brothers formed in July with Evaristo and Jon Zubiaga The Kagas, which published a single album titled New Rock Heroes. In 2003, Karlos & Txerra participated in the documentary Música En Las Venas but unfortunately Karlos died in October at age 44 and the group was history. November 15, 2014, died Yul Bolinaga (former guitarist), when collapsing on stage during a concert with The Potes.

That's the story so far with unfortunately a sad end. We sincerely the deceased with a loud "Haut Rein Ey!" and enjoy finest Spanish punk rock!!

PARAF - A Dan Je Tako Lijepo Počeo 1980

Moving to Ex-Yugoslavia and meet Paraf, together with Pekinška Patka one of my favourite band and this is their debut record on RTV Ljubljana with fourteen sophisticated jewels.

Paraf was a punk rock and later post-punk band from Rijeka, Croatia, known as one of the pioneers of punk rock in the former Yugoslavia. Following the expansion of punk rock in Europe, teenagers Valter Kocijancic (guitar, vocals), Zdravko Cabrijan (bass) and Dušan Ladavac "Pjer" (drums) formed Paraf in 1976. They played their first gig at Belvedere in Rijeka on December 31, 1976. The band's early live appearances were at Rijeka high-school parties along with the bands of similar musical orientation, Termiti, Protest and Lom. During the late 1978, the band started performing frequently, even outside Rijeka. They played in Ljubljana, Belgrade, Zagreb. The band also performed at the Novi Sad BOOM festival, as well as an opening act for The Ruts concert in Zagreb. In 1979, they released their debut single "Rijeka", a cover version of the Ramones song "Chinese Rocks", but Kocijancic signed as the song author in order to test the Yugoslav critics of the time. Despite the intention, it was the Dzuboks magazine journalist Petar Lukovic who recognized that the song was a cover version. The band also appeared on the various artists compilation album Novi punk Val 78-80, released by ZKP RTLJ in 1980, with the song "Narodna Pjesma" ("Folk Song").

After several delays, the band debut album A Dan Je Tako Lijepo Poceo... (And The Day Started Out So Nicely...) was released by ZKP RTLJ in the Spring of 1980. Due to provocative lyrics, the album was classified as kitsch product, and thus liable to additional taxation, despite subsequent changes to some of the lyrics as well as the selection of a different album cover. In line with the punk rock ideology, the band addressed several topics which were at the time new to the Yugoslav rock: the songs featured ironic usages of communist slogans, mocked, at the time, one of the most popular bands, Bijelo Dugme, in the song "Pritanga I Vaza", insulting the police in the censored version of "Narodna pjesma", and dealt with social themes typical for a port city. The album was produced by the band's close associate Goran Lisica "Fox", assisted by Igor Vidmar. (source: parafrijeka.blogspot)
