V/A - Rot In Hell 1984

Ei Di Weil, let's stay in an enjoyable mood and come to a compilation from my favorite British label Rot Records. In its short-lived tenure, they've released amazing records, including half a dozen compis, and to date none have disappointed me. On the one hand, this is due to bands that sent their demos there and can the songs therefore only be found there, and on the other hand to the unknown status of them. This healthy combination is daring and far from geared towards sales, also limited, I guess 1000 copies were pressed. Even Step-1 Music liked this stuff and re-released it on CD in 1996. A record deal then jumped out for some bands and became better known a little beyond their latitude. Rot In Hell is full with splendid music, as it should be for a little D.I.Y. label and you will like it.

1.Annihilator - OUT OF ORDER
2.The Fugitive - OVERDOSE
3.Emmerdale Farm - THE FILTH
4.Shall We Shan't We? - NO CONCERN
5.The Bomb Blast - THE VARUKERS
6.I Can See Through You - CONSTANT STATE
7.Thugs In Uniform - OI! POLLOI
8.Buy'N'Roll - XXX
9.Fighting Factions - D.O.S.
10.Fry - FRESHLY
11.Liar - BLEED
12.The Joke's On Me - RESISTANCE 77
13.One More Time - OVERDOSE
14.Lynching Party (Lets All Have A Swinging Time) - OUT OF ORDER
15.New Clear War - ANGRY RATS
16.Never Give In - OI! POLLOI
17.Enough Is Enough - NO CONCERN
18.Up In The Morning - BLEED
19.We Rule OK.... - XXX
20.So This Is Transilvania - CONSTANT STATE
21.Born Under The Stars - FRESHLY
22.D.O.S. - D.O.S.

EXTERNAL MENACE - Youth Of Today EP 1982 & No Views EP 1983 & Seize The Day EP 1997

Triple pack for the weekend start by this awesome band from the suburbs of Glasgow. Their debut from 1982 Youth Of Today is a classic record and one year later it was followed by their second EP called No Views. Again four smash hits and you get what you're lookin' for. The band went through a few alter ego moments over the following years - playing External Menace songs at gigs but under different names. Beat The System!! had folded and the band released a few compilation tracks on Rot Records. In 1987 Wullie (vocals) was taking a short cut across the M8 when he was hit by a car and killed. A decade on, the band were revived when Captain Oi! records began to show an interest in releasing a compilation album of all the bands previous releases. The band continued to chop and change over the following two years. In 1997 the Seize The Day EP was released. They toured Europe three times, toured the UK, played countless festivals and recorded the Process Of Elimination LP. Again many line-up changes but the band is still active and with their good basic Britpunk sound always a pleasure guest in my house.

Details: External Menace formed from the same youthful energy that gave birth to many of the "second wave"of British punk bands. Put together by vocalist Wullie Hammill and John Sneddon in the summer of 1979, the band were typical of the 1979/1980 punk bands, faster and rougher than the class of 77, but not an all out UK82-style attack. The band played out as often as they could, evolving fully into the UK82 mold, and released two singles and also putting in an appearance on the Total Anarchy compilation (1982). Their sound was typical of the era, kinda speedy punk with gruff vocals and anarcho-inspired lyrics abour war, the evil governments and nonconformism. That was the side of External Menace that most people knew best, but towards the middle of the 80's they branched out in a more melodic (but still hardcore) direction, playing reggae inspired tunes like "Rude Awakening" and "Killing Me Asylum". While the band recorded two or three more demos, putting some of their new tracks down, they didn't manage to get any more vinyl out, and finally broke up in 1985. Fast forward to 1994 Ian Welsh of Swine Flu harassed John Sneddon to get External Menace back together, and start kicking some more punk rock ass. Sneddy agreed, but only if Welshy (what is it with Scots and diminutive names ending in Y?) joined the band as vocalist, since Wullie Hamill had died in 1987. Swine Flu disappeared shortly after their first single was released, and re-emerged with a new name and a new guitarist. External Menace was back.

Their first new release was Pure Punkrock on Captain Oi! in 1995, which featured all the band's Beat The System!! recordings, plus a handful of early demos, and re-recorded versions of some old songs, the release didn't attract the interest of anyone except the UK82 completists. The band were invited to play the first Holidays In The Sun festival in August of 1996, and accepted. The entire festival was recorded (very poorly) and released on video by Barn End, and selections were released on two CDs by Anagram records. The band were invited back for HITS 1997, and (again) accepted. Around the same time the first of the HITS compilations appeared (early to mid 1997), External Menace finally released their first new single, the Process Of Elimination EP. The five track single was a completely unexpected, it featured some serious punk rock/reggae fusion, in the shape of "Rude Awakening", and was a drastic step AWAY from their UK82 roots. Later that year they also released a split 7" with Rectify, and their first album. The songs were a mix of old and new Ex Menace songs, with a few hold-overs from Swine Flu. It was a refreshing blend of UK82 hardcore and more straightforward midtempo punk, with a healthy dose of reggae thrown in for good measure. The album really made people sit up and pay attention, these guys weren't just another 80's punk band back for a few quick bucks, they were talented musicians with something interesting to offer the punk community. Unfortunately they only managed to release on more 7" (a split w/Recharge) before breaking up again in 1999. Puhh, a lot of words again but good infos are part of it!

FRESHLY RIOTS - Perhaps Demo 1982

Yeah Yeah Yeah, this record blows you off your couch and is an absolute must for demo fans, and the Vikings are always welcome in my castleI'm talking about Freshly Riots, a five piece founded in the brisk 1980 in Gedsted (North Jutland) and Perhaps is their second demo which was originally released on their Bondeskiver Records. The American label Queer Pills thought, it would be good for us to recall these valuable and rough recordings and so this fantastic record was created in an edition of 500 copies, thereof 100 in gray vinyl. A short official description: "Awesome dissonant music with elements of raw chaotic 60s garage psych. Instantly familiar and catchy but also dark and ominous and weirdly chaotic and unnerving." That's exactly right I would say. Their first EP followed in the same year and then their famous Hope album (1984), which had a different, more wavy sound but without losing their Punk roots. By mid-1984 they shortened their name to FRESHLY and a demo with two songs (both on Rot Records' Rot In Hell compilation, coming soon) came then in 1985. A year later their last big experiment Air (Quoth She) followed, on which they appear in a completely different guise and then at some point they broke up to merge into other bands. What remains, one of the best combos from Denmark and always worth a short break.

- Great Thx to Fredrik -

ANIMAL FARM - Model Soldier 7'' 1984

Three piece from London and the band consisted of Zarb (vocals/bass), P.Nut (guitars), Jik (drums) and they signed to Rot Records, home to many of the UK's gnarliest (and worst) punk bands, the single from Animal Farm sounds like it could have been recorded anywhere between 1977 and 1979. Model Soldier, their sole release, is melodic, mid-paced, cleanly (almost slickly) produced, with easily decipherable vocals (P Nut has a touch of Colin Newman's campy/sarcastic delivery) and none-too-brilliant but certainly acceptable lyrics. Somehow, in spite of its ordinariness, it's a great record. Animal Farm also issued a demo tape in 1983, including such fine material as 'Social Degeneration' and 'Lies', and big things were expected from them, but after the single and tracks on a handful of Rot compilations, they vanished. A review: "for some reason, ANIMAL FARM sound like a punkish band from the '79 era (e.g., the SHAPES). They have a certain quirky melodic quality, a clever wit, and a cleaner guitar sound than one normally finds today. "Model Soldier" is a sarcastic look at enlistees; the flip seems to be a continuation of the Jilted John/Julie story." (Jeff Bale, MMR #14, June 1984) The farmers can also be found on numerous interesting compilations, good luck.

THE VULTURES - At Home EP 1981

Now a rare piece and the original EP was released via RCS and they recorded this 4 track killer in 1981 that overtime has became impossible to find. Which is a shame as it is simply a masterpiece of Dutch sounds. Le Vida Es Un Mus got fed up and decided finally in 2015 this official reissue, another one the scarcest Netherlands records that was listed in the top 25 European punk rarities in Record Collector. The Vultures hailed from Epe, in the middle of the Dutch Bible-Belt and they're loud, proud and snotty, the sound is based around a trademark chainsaw guitar tone, plodding bass, passionate vocals and overall a clear UK influence. Without doubt if this band was english they would have been on Riot City, Secret or Rot Records or seen supporting relevant UK bands. Short lived but great, also found on some major compilations.

ENGLISH DOGS - Mad Punx & English Dogs 1983

We stay in 1983 and move to Grantham, the English Dogs founded there in the beginning of the 80s and were at the forefront of the first wave of English punkrock. After two demos they toured as support to fellow punk band G.B.H in Germany during early 1983 which was very successful for and Clay Records signed them and shortly thereafter their debut 12'' Mad Punx & English Dogs appeared and one year later followed Invasion Of The Porky Men, the first full length album. Personnel changes ensued after the release and they leave Clay to sign with Rot Records and release the decidedly metal tinged To The Ends Of The Earth EP in September 1984. This indicated the direction and their sound became more metallic and Forward Into Battle (1985) documented this change in my opinion excellent. I think, I had three slabs and all are sold (although I enjoyed such sounds back then) and Where Legend Began ('86) completed the transformation and I was out. I think they are very popular in the metal scene and that's okay. So enjoy once more the old hits and I have to go, Bundesliga is on.

PICTURE FRAME SEDUCTION - Hand Of The Rider 1985

Quarter-finals and today draw, let's see who is swept away next. Weekend is there and we start with the rare debut by Picture Frame Seduction, formed 1978 in Hardfordwest as The Frames, split up in 1987, reformed in 2003 and is still going. Band name taken from something Sid Vicious muttered before he died. Turned down offers from both No Future and Riot City Records so Rot Records was ready to release the album after one year of the I'm Good Enough (For Me) EP on SoSoAll in all, the sixteen lanterns kick well and I would say the typical UK punk sound we love all still moves my tired limbs, partly reminds me of G.B.HAlso featured on many cool compilations, A Kick Up The Arse, for example, is one of them. Enough blah blah, enjoy the break from the daily routine and till next week.

PARANOIA - Shattered Glass 1984

All right, one more now because I'm in top form; I won another pizza versus my girlfriend in Backgammon after three sets of wins and she's a bit angry because she was close to winningbut a six and four doublets broke her neck, but she still love her King and if you are bored, play this game.... now to the post: I would say a record from Rot Records is never dull and another example is Paranoia, they were Janet (vocals), Paul (guitars), Mick (bass), Phil (drums) and this longplayer was posted by Curious Guy from Phoenix Hairpins blog (unfortunately inactive & today as an archive) in fuckin' 2008 and now I think it's time to post it again because I listen to this album in the last days and thought to myself "what an amazing record!", it must be available because it's a terrific one, I think it's okay & important while the link doesn't work and this stuff deserve a re-upp and so I bring it on for you again and don't kill me Curious, the credits belong to you. About the band is nothin' to find except their MySpace site where you can find more songs from this Stoke-On-Trent based combo, can also be found on numerous compilations. Let's Goth'N'Roll!!!

FRESHLY RIOTS - Hope 1984

Freshly Riots was a Danish punk and post-punk band from Himmerland and formed in Gedsted in October 1981. Their first release is the raw and wild Delightfully Fresh EP which came out in 1983 via Bondeskiver. In late August 1983 Jørn went out and was replaced on guitar by Lars Gosta. Two months later goes Freshly Riots in ARP studio and recorded its first album Hope. Again you have Claus from Johnny and the Cold Demons helps to assist in production. In aninterview in Danish Sam shortly before release, Bo explains that the record title is about though group members are pessimists, they have still some hope left. Hope was released again on Bondeskiver in May 1984. In the period around the publication of Hope Bo moves to Aalborg and goes out of the group, the vowel is then taken over by Mike. In May, sends Bond discs capture plate Complication, here contributes Freshly Riots with the two numbers A Fall and Infantry. After releasing this awesome record the band have change their name to Freshly and Lars goes out of the group what causes the Freshly end of the year gives a concert at the Youth House as a trio without guitar. Freshly are contacted by the English label Rot Records, inviting them to contribute to a compilation tape. That is why the group in January 1985 again in ARP studio and record the two tracks Fry and Born Under Stars to collect. The numbers are however in April also released on a cassette of the Bond discs. Lars is now again become a part of Freshly and in July they played at Roskilde Festival. Winter 1985/1986 used to rehearse new material Freshly in February 1986 recording of the ARP program. Production is carried out in collaboration with Charlie, an engineer assigned to the studio. Group's last album Air (Quoth She) will be published 16th April 1986. The group's last concert were played at the house in Århus at 27. February 1987. Freshly dissolved finally in May 1989 when Mike and Michael moved to Århus. Brilliant Album!!!

CLOCKWORK SOLDIERS - Wet Dreams EP 1984

Ahhh, there is nothing like a long, healthy sleep and a hearty coffee to greet the world with. I start today with the Clockwork Soldiers. An Oi! four piece from Leicester and they were formed late 1983 and consisted of Timo (vocals), Doc (guitars), Roche (bass), Penny (drums). Their only record is the three track Wet Dreams EP from 1984 on Rot Records, followed by two demos in 1984 and 1985. However in 1985 the band were tired ot the constant problems that appeared as soon they were going to perform live and fell apart. Vocalist Timo then went on to form the Oi! combo The Glory. A review by Jeff Bale Maximum Rock'N'Roll June 1984: "The title song is an hilarious trashing of the Everly Brothers classic All I Have To Do Is Dream, with altered X-rated lyrics. The flip contains one slow, tuneless Oi cut (In The Name Of Science) and a much better speedier number (Suicide). The production is absurdly muddy, and the B-side label has the wrong song order." I think he described the slab excellent and a decent production would indeed have been desirable... never mind, thousand times better as the junk on the radio or senselessly climbing mountains, right!

V/A - Two Ninety Nine! 1984

Dear friends, I just found out that Mensi, leader of Angelic Upstarts, died on December 10th, 2021 at the age of 65 after being infected with Covid-19. Now the second from the band after bassist Tony (died on February 22nd, 2021). I'm really shocked and sad, the punk world has lost a big fighter and sympathetic person, I raise my glass to you! R.I.P. Mensi, the next posts are dedicated to you.

I think a compilation from Rot Records is a worthy homage, on the one hand I don't know a bad record from this label, on the other hand I think the music fits right now. Two Ninety Nine is full with great bands/songs which show an excellent overview of the house bands and whose singles were mostly available in small editions. I think, this compi had only a print run of 1000 copies as well. Everything is said, let the music speak!

V/A - What Are You Doing About That Hole In Your Head? 1986

I don't know about you, but the hysteria over the Corona Shit gets on my nerves. I think all the measures, curfew, protective mask, cancellations are exaggerated, who knows what the Chinese were doing? What is certain is that they have triggered a pandemic and the European Football Championship will probably not take place this summer. Is that just a flu infection that made a lot of people die in a short time? The old and the sick are quickly affected and many die of flu, but this is normal because their immune systems is weak and society buys like stupid, that only makes clear how hollow they are and rely on the government and I think this brilliant compilation from Rot Records fits: What Are You Doing About That Hole In Your Head? Seventeen international nuggets for you to clear your mind... stay vertical!

BRUTAL VERSCHIMMELT - s/t LP 1983

One proper release on Rock-O-Rama is the only record of Brutal Verschimmelt, active from 1980-1984 the band was founded in Kempten and wrote rock history in the local scene. The quartet captivated with an incredibly rude, rough punk sound, the constant obtained mainly with the twelve songs on the self-titled debut album for posterity. In 1980, Carlo Kallen, along with school friends, founded the band Adolf Streit & Die NS Verbrecher, renamed in Psychorotz and finally Brutal Verschimmelt. First concerts took place in the Allgäu region with B.Trug. B.Trug had at that time a record deal with Rock-O-Rama from Brühl and mediated also Brutal Verschimmelt there. A demo was sent to Herbert Egoldt who took the band under contract. Egoldt invited the band in May 1983 to Cologne where they recorded their debut album in 16 hours. Egoldt himself produced the LP. A self-designed record covers with an antiwar collage was rejected by Egoldt and replaced by a skeleton warrior with mohawk who fights against a kind of monster. In the insert the lyrics of the band were not printed, presumably because Egoldt already flirted at this time with the nazi rock market. The band find out about it during the submission of their 100 free copies. Then they smeared these LPs and deposited with a supplement, in which they agreed to. Shortly after the release of their debut album, the band broke up after drummer Franz got out and the band find no substitute. Carlo Kallen later played in the Ewings, Chili Confetti and Die Üblichen. Over the years, the album became a wanted rarity. The album was launched in 1990 for a second time without the band was informed. In January 2013 re-released as a double-LP called Und Die Zukunft Ist Doch Rot on Höhnie Records which contains the album, the demo tape and a live recording of 25.February 1982. On the occasion of this re-issue three original members decided in June 2013 to go on tour for nine events in Germany. That's the story so far and now hark to this legendary sound pleasure.

V/A - WienmusikK 1981

Last post for this month and it belongs to our dear nice neighbors, this fine and rare compilation is one more a great punk/synth/avantgarde release from Austria which came out via Schallter Records. Very weird noises and electronics plus a few punk tracks can be heard and it's again, like Die Tödliche Dosis record, a interessting mix of the early underground scene from Austria's beautiful capital city Vienna, varied, charmin' and for all those who like to discover new music styles just right. Although no big hits on it but absolutely worth hearing. And this is the tingly stuff for this awesome Blog! - Hell Yeah!

After a long time another hot compilation from Get Baque Records, the label with taste & fine touch, presents on its fifth round of great punk classics French Punksploitations from 1977-1983. All cuts were taken by rare 7Inches which rot nowadays in some cellars are therefore difficult to obtain and to secure the pension (if we reach it at all). You can even find some of these treasures here in the blog and should they be down leave acomment to the corresponding post. Of course, also appeared in a limited edition, number unclear, and the excellent mix of Punk, Rock'NRoll and Wave makes once again clear how versatile the French musicians of this time were. At any rate, I can't find any gap fillers so here we go!

2.Flip Intégral - BULLDOZER

STRICHER - s/t LP 1982

Only album by this german band on Rio Reiser's label David Volksmund Produktionen (which released especially in the early 80s some good bands/records). Stricher were founded in Berlin by Helmut Schweiker, Jan Selber, Jochen Hansen, Maike Christiansen and Siewert Johannsen and their record was produced by Rio Reiser. The LP is extremely hard to find and is nowadays a little expensive when you hold it in your hands. Musically, the band offers a consistantly good mix between Punk, New Wave and dark rock, some might say Gothic but I think that is an exaggerationWhat excites me is the healthy mix of melancholic songs and hard numbers without being monotonous. Really a great record. Stricher fascinate and they prove this too on their following 7inch 'Rot/Morgen' a year later.

V/A - Party Pooping Punk Provocations! 1985

A very nice evening comes to an end and as a coronation now this compilation from Xcentric Noise Records with eighteen rare UK punkrock stars. An amazingly good mix of different styles, almost every info in the insert and the only thing that bothered me is the Gelaber between the songs so I have simply deleted this shit because the plate is so more attractive and believe me, you will miss nothing because it's simply superfluous. To be honest, such shit really needs nobody. I did not know this record before (and I love compilations) and find it really felicitous. It stands Volume 1 on the front cover but a second part, to my knowledge, is not published.

WALTER ELF - Heut' Oder Nie 1987

Walter Elf are German punx from Kaiserslautern founded in 1983. The band name refers to the nickname of the 1.FC Kaiserslautern in the 1950s, based on Fritz Walter and the so-called "Walter Elf". Most members are today active in Kick Joneses and they existed from 1982 to 1991. Together with the Spermbirds, with whom they also shared most of the band members, the band belonged to the flagships of the Kaiserslautern punk scene. After a demo they released their debut album on We Bite Records and we have eleven nice melodic mid-tempo goodies with funny lyrics. I would not call them fun-punk, rather unpolitical & jocular with much fun doing music, this album was recorded by: Beppo (vocals), Frank & Jürgen (guitars), Markus (bass), Roger (drums), Alex (trumpets) and Lee (vocals). In their life span were made five albums, a few 7Inches + many compilation contributions, one of them the Awup! EP on Unsere Kleine Welt. After their farewell concert on December 17, 1991 in the Kulturzentrum Kammgarn in Kaiserslautern, the band played on December 20, 2002 and on December 30, 2005 each again "one-time" Reunion concerts at the same venue, as well as on 27 & 28 December 2008, both were sold out. In addition, they performed on 21.July 2007 as part of the Back-To-Future Festival on the Halbinsel Pouch near Leipzig. In 2010, the band released their first record since 1991 on July 30 in form of an EP, "Männer In Rot", a tribute to the 1. FCK. There was also an appearance at the Kuseler Festival Kein Bock auf Nazis. The question of whether further appearances will follow in the future was answered by Schattner: "We let everything come to us. A tour or a new album are certainly not planned. After all, there is also Kick Joneses." Enough words, now it's party time!
