VOGUE - A Doll Spits Cubes 1981

Early Vienna psychedelic band around Gary Danner and Ronnie Urini - legend status. The Vogue is a truly legendary Austrian underground band, which were founded in Vienna in 1978 and they exist until 1982. From it's famous rare debut album "A Doll Spits Cubes" were pressed just 300 copies and because of a dispute, the album was scrapped, obtain a few copies on the collectors' market leading prices. The album was pressed with two exchanged numbers again and is now a cult. Here we have now fourteen songs and they're all great, a 60's spirit sound, trashy guitars and sometimes I think the production is quite thin but I think it was intentional and gave the whole album a brilliant flavor. I'm not much fan of the psychedelic style but this album is really top. Check for yourself!

BATES MEN - Für Immer 7'' + THE BATES - I See Love In Your Eyes 7'' 1985

Well, a pleasant evening is coming to an end and I'm not tired so I'm here now. Let's post this rare band and they formed 1985 in the Wiener Neustadt as Bates Men by ex-Dämmerattacke members Thomas Guth (vox & organ) and Wolfgang Leinweber (drums) who recruited Hannes Eder (bass), Dieter Nemetz (guitar) and Joe Stickler (synth). The bands debut self-released 7" Für Immer/Das Schweigen before changing their name into The Bates and both songs are classic theatrical post-punk, pretty dark and the key sound accompanied the cold atmosphere which lasts nearly ten minutes. I like the Dämmerattacke album with its subtle hint of Gothic and the desperate vocals and every time I listen to I know: everything is perishable! Uhh, that means not I hang around at cemeteries, ha ha.... No, their songs have their own authentic and unique character, which, in addition to the ability to write really cool numbers was mainly due to the highly unique and far from the pop cliche vocals, the two men behind the microphone Walter Leinweber and Michael Andersch. So the songs are still functioning admirably and there are a few bands that simply have it, but I digress...... as always, hehe...

As the Bates they released their 2nd 7" I See Love In Your Eyes/You're Better Than Me, finally released on new label Cactus Records which had been founded by friends. Musically they changed their style and move to an Alternative sound and in my opinion they lose a bit of class. The songs not bad but they are nothing special. But it's a matter of taste, right? After another 12" on RST Records, featuring a Goth Rock cover version of The Glitter Band's "Angel Face" they had to change their band name into Bates Unlimited due to a legal controversy with the German band The Bates. In 1994 the band split, Nemetz and Bechtloff forming Seven Ages. So overalI I can say both records are pretty ok and worth the download because they fuckin' rare (check eBay for silly offers). And I would note that they are not present on the cool Austrian compilations Es Chaos Is Die Botschaft and 'De Guade Oide Zeit' which is a shame but there are certainly reasons. Enough words, enjoy the music!!

PÖBEL - Es Lebe Hoch Die Perversion EP 1981

Shortly after their founding in 1980, Pöbel developed into a highly acclaimed live band, they played masterfully with a very fast and hard sound, Viennese proletarian texts and inspire the audience with their behavior on the stage. Pöbel were Sven (Guitar/Vox), Lörkas (Bass), Andi Abschaum (Guitar) & Tschurie (Drums) and play incredibly fast aggressive punk rock. In January 1981, 200 pieces of their one & only rare EP 'Es lebe hoch die Perversion (Long Live The Perversion)' were as "Test Pressure" on the Vienna D.I.Y. label PanzaPlatte published. Three ultra-rough hardcore punk songs by one of the most uncompromising bands from the Vienna underground have been preserved here for eternity. A few months later, the band broke up.

COSMETICS - s/t LP 1982

Now female fronted and come to a band from beautiful Vienna and there's not really much info in the www. The Cosmetics were founded in 1981 by the producer-couple Gitti and Ernie Seuberth. 'Coconut Smoother' is their debut 7'' which was released on Lemon Records (Zitronenklang) and with their second single, 'Hello Man' they held for weeks at No.1 the Austria charts. At the Rennbahn-Express-Star selection-1981 they were voted as the most successful local band (before Chuzpe). Gitti Seuberth sang also in the new-wave band Minisex and with the director Niki List the theme song to his cult film (and there are not many in Austria) Müllers Büro. I'm really happy and grateful for this album because it's so fuckin 'rare and only a few know, it's worth to listen to every song. Excellent pop with a fat touch of punk (KBD fit). And the band's not afraid to play a few covers, examples: 'Last Time' by the Rolling Stones or 'Summertime Blues' by unforgotten Eddie Cochran. Curious? - Very good!!!!!

MINISEX - Bikini Atoll 1982

Early morning and it goes a bit poppy with the second record by Minisex, an Austrian band from Vienna, founded 1980, of the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (?), which celebrated great successes in the Eighties. With their music they wanted to fight against the then popular songwriters' scene. At the beginning they were still singing in English, but then they switched to German. They released four albums and broke up 1990. In mid-2009, the group reunited for a charity concert and since then they play live, mostly in Austria. In March 2014 the fifth album appeared and the band keeps goin'. I bought this platte for five bucks and well, nine pretty audible relaxed danceleg swing songs. Simply said: 8 points out of 10. Check these both compilations for more Austrian music.

DIE VERGIFTETEN PFEILE - Chaos Ist Mir Lieber 7'' 1982

Hailing from Vienna comes this small piece of vinyl which was released via the legendary and best Austrian label Panza-Platte and you guessed sure, it's their only release. 'Es Geht Mir Gut' was packed on the rare cult compilation Heimat Bist Du Großer Söhne which is also released on Panza-Platte one year later. Musically here are two numbers somewhere in the direction of NDW meets Pop and Punk. Slightly jaunty guitars with a touch of ska influences, nice bassline, variable rhythmic drums and a clear voice. Fazit: Very successful record with a solid production. Recommended!!!

FERRUM - Shoot Me 7'' 1979

Well, this rare piece of 70s Austrian rock'n'roll is the bands only release on Atlanta and on the cover these three men look very happy as if they had smoked a good pipe. Necessary they have certainly not because their music is a straight energetic sound with a short number on the a-side and a three minute track on the flip. Fuzzy guitars consistently, decent tempo and astreine production, I was really surprised when I listen to this single, a real rare Austrian underground nugget. Bandinfo = nothing.

THE STAGGERS / SKEPTIC ELEPTIC - Split 12'' 2005

Today I'm comin' up with a split record and the follow up is an extreme rare copy (hand numbered to 500 copies) which was released Broken Heart Records. Let's start side a with the Incredible Staggers (formerly The Staggers) and they are an Austrian 60's-garage-trash-surf-rock & roll band from Graz. The band say about themselves: "The 2002 launched 60s garage punk and rock & roll band "The Staggers" from Graz/Vienna has both musically and visually quite prescribed the late 50s and early 60s, the sis freaks in tailor-made yarn and Chelsea boots are mainly related to one hit wonders various 'Back From The Grave' compilations or legends like Screamin Lord Sutch, but they are not free from surf influences. Alright you Nerds and Finks prepare for an onslaught of primitive beats, chainsaw guitars and the eerie farfisa sound. It's raw! It's frantic! It's horrifying! It's the Staggers!!!" And the band keeps its promises: you expect five terrific rock'n'roll surf numbers of the finest. The b-side is just as nice. Skeptic Eleptic from St. Pölten, founded in winter of 1999 by bassist Mots T. Sux, Thoms'n'Roll (drums), Tom Mohawk (guitars) and singer Sickboy Eleptic. The band describe their music simply as punk rock and they found in the early stages yet increasingly influences of hardcore and street punk, so in the meantime their music has developed into a mixture of punk/garage/surf/psychedelic/ trash/pop and rock'N'roll. The band insists that it will not be forced into a certain genre corner. In 2009 the band broke up. Both bands have numerous records out and if you like a decent rock'N'roll surf punk sound then get this ten blasts and Go Go Go!

SUPERVAMP - Ballroom Blitz 7'' 1988

Ballroom Blitz is a song written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and originally recorded by the British rock band Sweet (better known as The Sweet) and a lot of bands covered this sucker. Supervamp were formed 1988 in Vienna and they released their groovy version as single on JMS Records. They were originally a girl band, over the years came to three male musicians, their sound goes from rock over funk and there music was present in the Austrian radio. They toured through Austria, Germany and Russia. More is not known and I think this single is their only release. The b-side is an instrumental version. They disbanded in December 1992.

TOM PETTINGS HERTZATTACKEN - s/t LP 1982

Start July with Tom Pettings Hertzattacken, an Austrian rock band were founded in 1980 by Eberhard Forcher and in 1983 they land an Austropo hit with "Bis Zum Himalaya". Shortly after its founding, the band had their first gig in Amerlinghaus/Vienna. In June 1980 the band has with 'Tonight' a goodie on the Donaustrand EP compilation and the following year with 'Radio Radio' on the compilation Wienmusikk from the Schallter label. The band toured Austria and Bavaria, released a few 7inches and 1982 their s/t debut album, again at Schallter Records which was recorded at Gorilla Studio/Wien in October 1981. Their sound is a typical mix of NDW pop with a dash of punk rock what is especially reflected in the lyrics (you know the wonderful melancholic Austrian language???). And that's what makes the platte!!!!  Thirty-Seven minutes shallow pop: cozy, fluffy and with 'Deine Augen' a real blast on it. Cool record in any form. In 1985 the band broke up after the release of the album "Echo Der Liebe" under the name Tom Petting & Die Silhouetten.

MICKEYMAN & EXTREM - Split LP 1983

The first release of this ultra-rare original Austrian pressing from 1983 shows the debut of two bands from Vienna. Now an extremely cool song from an extremely cool band: "Fress'n, Sauf'n, Scheiss'n, Prunz'n" is the ultimate rejection to the Austrian philistines with their 40-hour week, the obligatory television evening after work and the drunkexcesses around the corner. Austria needs to burn, all right? EXTREM founded already in the summer of 1979 in Vienna and went through a short time with some line-up changes, and Mickey Kodak, alias MICKEYMAN took them and recorded a split LP on their label Rebel. Recorded in July 1983 in the Gaga, the result was probably the harshest and toughest punkrock publication, which had until then spit the steak paradise to light. Oaschloch-Rhetoric in crude Viennese, jagged hardcore punk guitars and drums beating high-speed at the door to madness and say Serwas! I'm ahead of my time..' MICKEYMAN took them and recorded a split LP on his label Rebel. The American punk Magazine "Maximum Rock-N-Roll" reviews: The Extrem side is extreme! Raucous cycloning mayhem from Austria, enough driving power and insistent quickness to hurl you into a venture mega-speed craziness. Savage guitar grinds charge out a brutal slaughter of aggression and combustion, crammed into a wild seizure of raw energy. Extrem escalate with each zooming slice. Mickeyman is Austrian reggae done well, and their punk song is basic and humorous. Don't miss this album! - the Extrem stuff is drastic plastic. - Pushead (from Maximum Rocknroll #14, June 1984) - No wonder he invited them to contribute a song to his now legendary Cleanse The Bacteria compilation in 1985 and this was the first time that an Austrian punk band was released in the U.S. - In 1991 they changed their band name in EAT LEAD and disbanded at the end of the year, finally!

DIRT SHIT - Rattenloch EP 1979

Dirt Shit stands in the first row of austrian punk bands. Born in 1978, with Robert "Räudig" of Chuzpe who left after one or two live shows, was this band maybe the most complete punk package that was (perhaps forever!?) available in the country of the lovely "Wiener Sängerknaben". At the peak of Dirt Shit, that was Roli "Rostig" Übereuter, Berni "Bedenklich" (questionable) Tragut, Michi "Monoton" and Ronnie "Urini" Iraschek, they could cause a pogo orgy whenever they charged the stage. The songs where fast, the guitars where dirty and the vocals where catchy and violent. Michi had never sung the same lyrics, and improvised at every show, which worked until he was done on stage. In 1979 they could have had an appearance in an austrian b-movie "Exit-Nur keine Panik" [Exit-Don't Panic]. But they where knocked out because of a quarrel with the producer(s), althought the songs for the movie where already recorded. After a threat to sue by the band, the movie team gave them money to cut the four songs on 7'' vinyl (limited to 500 pieces). They only played a few gigs in Vienna and one in 1980 in Linz. The members were also active in other early Austrian punk and new wave bands (Mordbuben AG, Kleenex Aktiv and others). Drugs and alcohol resulted in the end of this band. RONNIE URINI - Child Of Sunrise-Creature Of The Moon 7'' 1985

Ronnie Urini is an Austrian musician, composer and song writer. His first band, Vogue where he was the drummer, took the Sixties revival and Britpop in Austria in advance. Since 1978 he plays in a lot of alternative and underground bands (including Kleenex Aktiv, Willi Warma, Ronnie Urini & the Last Poets, Ronnie Urini & Venus). He interprets his own songs again and again re-used in popular English-language hits like "Summer Wine". His performances are often wild and known that it entered into direct contact with the audience, to supplies them with heated word duels. Ronnie Urini is one of the exceptional characters of the Austrian alternative & punk scene, and his records are nowadays often much sought and highly expensive. Here are two songs, one in german the other in english, which moved more into rock or what we called today alternativ with a little touch of gothic atmosphere (especially the b-side is a lovely ballad). I add the 'Black Light, Black Cities' 7inch with in. All quite charmin' & nice.

KLEENEX AKTIV - Weisse Rosen 7'' 1982

Kleenex Aktiv was a follow-up of the legendary punk heroes Dirt Shit from Vienna. The original bandmembers from 1981 where Rolli Rostig (vox), Billy Nutella (guitar), Harry Müller (Bass) and Ronnie Urini (drums). The Band was the best sounding pogo punk band until 1982/83 when they changed to New Wave/Pop, a result of the cooperation with a major label. The fast and faster drums of Ronnie and the massiv guitar & bass of Rolli & Harry sounded like an explosion in the heart of Vienna. Their concerts where legendary, but they never found a way to record a song in a studio that met the expectations. In 1982 they recorded this 7'' on Panza-Platte Records which is not really bad and shows how great they're potential are. In 1985 the band broke after a lousy second 7'' called "Hilfe" which is a bit too poppy, not bad but not comparable to this one. Check them on Es Chaos Is Die Botschaft! and Heimat Bist Du Großer Söhne and the mega three record compilation De Guade Oide Zeit.

WILLI WARMA - Ich Sprenge Alle Ketten! 7'' 1981

First post in 2016 and I wanna start with a good motto: I blast all chains! I hope you all arrived perpendicular.

Figurehead of the Linz music scene end of the 70s were Willi Warma. According to the Vienna Music funnel "Linzer best local band." The legendary punk heroes Willi Warma (1977-1983) were not only the "only Austrian rock and roll band, which also looked like a rock'n'roll band, they lived and behaved. The very name of Willi Warma had a magical, mysterious, wicked attraction, briefly joined punk with glam rock, and was also so sexy like nothing else in the former Austrian music scene. From their home in Linz - the equally legendary "Café Landgraf" - conquered the band early 1980 Vienna by storm, became regular guests at trendy venues like the U4 and spread so the news of Linz as the absolute hot spot of the Austrian punk, new wave & underground scene. They brought new wind with their präpotent glamorous style and the excessive "the most arrogant band in the country" ("The Vienna") but also the first time something like a pop-consciousness and Popknowin' (in the sense of writing popmyths about pop songs) to Austria. Willi Warma played punk as Idea of pop as the idea of punk and pop. And they were absolutely the undisputed champion in matters of teenage anthems! Moreover, with "Stahlstadtkinder" they brought the sense of time and a whole generation to the point. The end comes a little later in early 1983. After the first foreign business (in the Nuremberg KOMM) dissolve Willi Warma, despite further offers concert, while driving home to Linz. The Complete Works of the band there are now on CD. "Stahlstadtkinder" (Fish Records) brings nineteen songs, including some unpublished recordings and live recordings, a quarter of a century later access. So here two awesome tracks, A-Side a pissoff punk tune, the B-Side a cool reggae bitch. Superb!!!

BLÜMCHEN BLAU - Wie Die Tiere 1982

Blümchen Blau was an Austrian "NDW" band from Vienna which was active in the early 80s. Until today, their biggest success "Flieger". Blümchen Blau were the most famous Austrian New Wave Band and their music was pretty much on the temporal and stylistic boundary between the early and the Underground commercial exploitation of the NDW which was thrown on the market. Musically it's pretty catchy rock/pop with some wave ska influences. The band is not nearly as happy over how the band name or the very colorful LP cover promise. Their single "Flieger" has nothing to do with Extrabreit's hit, but also based on the Hans Albers classic and was a respectable hit in Austria that time. In Germany, the song was not succesful, which is probably the oversaturation of the market 1982 in Germany was, as in the musical quality. Songs like "Eisenbahn" offered precisely the oblique madness that the commercial NDW stripped quickly and become a "cheeky" had hit infusion. The subsequent singles were no longer released in Germany. In addition to "Flieger" is "Weihnachtsmann", the most famous single of Blümchen Blau, which was already covered by the Hamburg band Charles Lindbergh n.e.V. in 1983 on their early tapes and live performances. Interesting and a nice gag is that on the LP cover the German texts were translated into Yugoslav, but of course was much meaningless. Most songs have a great groove, the singer is charismatic and the lyrics are simple sneaky. Under professional conditions and completely free of added time pressure in Vienna Gorilla studios recorded, is this album one of the most charismatic and still incomparable NDW record of all time. A short time later, the band broke up.
