Now the last damn highlight of coldy February and I have to say, this month was extremely full with beautiful and interesting records. But that only happened because of my broken toe, which left me immobile and locked up at home, good for the blog, good for you! Let’s beam ourselves 16.500 kilometers east and visit Melbourne and we meet this four piece called La Femme and they were formed 1978 and they made three 7Inches and one album in their relatively short active life-span. Their influences came from Punk/New Wave/Glam & Hardrock and this is their first vinyl output on Missing Link Records with two great tunes. Led by a charismatic frontman in Chane Chane, a flashy guitarist in Brett Walker, and supported by the thuggish rhythm section of Peter Kidd and Graham Schiavello, the band earned themselves a reputation for being confident, showy and popular in certain circles. Both goodies impress with their brilliant mid-tempo beat with sawing punky guitars and even though the length is well over three minutes, it isn't boring at all, it brings every sluggish mind out of the darkness and everyone who can feel is immediately infected, the flip is an interesting cover of a band I have never heard before. Very cool music and suitable for any warm togetherness, provided you are open to it! Just try it out. The band broke up at the end of 1983.

THE GENTS - School Kids 7'' 1980
Here's another band I know nothing about and there is surprisingly a lof of infos about the three piece from South Africa. This is partly because not many records from this part of the world made it to Europe or the USA and partly because of course the editions were very small and the bands were rather short-lived. In this case the band is called The Gents and they consisted of Kevin (vocals/guitars), Tim (bass) & Sydne B (drums) and they made one 7Inch (this one) in 1980 and an eponymous Album in 1982. Aside from this there is precious little information about this late 70's early 80's New Wave band from Durban. There are two nice songs for your ears and I think every PowerPop fan will love them. They were not invited to any comps, for whatever reason, it is probably due to the length of their songs which are way over three minutes, but that's okay. The song School Kids somehow touches me, it was a long time ago and not always pleasant. The flip is also very nice, what happened in 1917? I don't know, whatever, check out the three, they're worth it!

SAMIAM - Live Germany! EP 1992
Last but not least, a bit live stuff from one of my favorite bands from California. Samiam stand for fantastic songs with more personal lyrics, I won't call them Emopunk, this isn't true... No No No, they create great songs with an intense deep emotional feeling, you know what I mean, and I like this combination of personal lyrics paired with aggressive sound that is never over the top. The mix has to be right and in my opinion the Sunny California Boys celebrate that amazingly well. And this EP is a brilliant example how it sounds live. This goodie was released as part of the Your Choice Live Series and is not compatible with their album from the same series, these three songs were recorded live in the "Oberhaus" in Alzey on March 31, 1992 and the 7Inch is limited to 2000 copies. Three songs from their magnificent third album Billy can be heard and I can warmly recommend you to buy their records.
V/A - Bullshit Detector 1980
An important series that was born in the early Eighties is called Bullshit Detector and it's a collection of Compilations featuring demos which sent to Crass by a variety of bands and were then released on Crass Records and I only know the first three and all came with a cool fold-out poster containing a collage of information, lyrics and artwork to all the bands, and all for a litte bunch of gravel. The sound quality was mixed and often basic, or even poor, as Crass would master the tapes directly to record without any additional production or enhancement. For Crass, the expectation of a polished performance was missing the point. But that's exactly what makes these songs/records worth listening to: Authentic, raw and unpolished, they convey the rebellious, anti-attitude of the Punk spirit and when I listen to these gems today, after more than forty years, I know I did a lot of things right and you won't be able to get rid of this feeling, it will always stay inside of you. Love passes, but Punk never. And the message is still the same as it was then, get off your ass and don't accept everything that stupid society or TV shows you. With this in mind, my friends, I wish you a nostalgic listening pleasure.

CHARLYS SLAVAR - Fångar EP 1984
Rare piece by this Swedish Heroes called Charlys Slavar and they formed 1981 by JB (vocals), Schiz (guitars), Liljan (bass), Mattias (drums). The Drummer was replaced in 1982 by Örni and they played on the local Punk scene for a couple of years before releasing their lone Fångar EP (1000 copies should exist) via Massproduktion in 1984. A year later they had changed their name to Charly & & Slaves and appeared on the En Samling Rock Från Sundsvall Compilation anno 1985. In the same year Örni left the band and was replaced by Kjell-Åke. In 1986 they released the single 'Rotten Love' which was a mixture of Punk & Hardrock. In 1987 Schiz left the band and was replaced by Curt and finally Christian joined on keyboards in 1988. The musical style changed radically from Hardrock influenced Punk to Deathrock, inspired by the 80s Goth scene. The band fell asleep without drama in 1989. In 2009 they reunited with another line-up for a performance at Massproduktion's 30th anniversary. In 2019 Massproduktion began digitizing recorded material with the band. What remains are three decent Eighties goodies and there's nothing more to say from my side.

HOTEL KEMPAUSKI - Sternzeichen Kartoffel - Aszendent Sauerkraut EP 2022
It's been a while since I presented you a new, promising band from Schleswig-Holstein, Hotel Kempauski, and back then I was still working with a band member who unfortunately changed his employer, since then there's Funkstille, but that doesn't stop me from wishing his band continued positive vibes. This little EP is their latest vinyl release to my knowledge and in advance, with which I can only agree, a little official info: The self-proclaimed building society Punks from Kiel are taking HardcorePunk into its long overdue midlife crisis. Live, they offer speed, cynicism, lengthy announcements and Hotel Kempauski deliver solid melodies to combat the tristesse and let off steam and they made it cool, because they're good at it. It's rough, it's loud, it's splendid. Six decent banger with the typically North German confusing lyrics, but very clear (it's really interesting how they went from the potato harvest to democracy, + other cool associations... simply delicious), and after nine minutes you're back in reality. Six songs, limited edtion of 250 copies, self-released and it's worth to visit their homebase for more releases.
THE VICTIMS - Girls Don't Go For Punks 7'' 2023
Now a damn cool 7Inch and I think it's a record with the shortest playing time, two smashers under two minutes, and this interests me immediately. In advance, this little beauty was sold exclusively at their last show @ the Rosemount Hotel/Perth on the 10th of June 2023. Legendary Perth Punk combo the Victims (active from 1977-1979 and best known for their classic ‘Television Addict’) regrouped in 2019 to play a handful of gigs and re-record a few of their old tunes. I guess, I don't need to write any more words, there's a lot to read about the band on the www and I think it's just fantastic that the guys haven't lost any of their power and enthusiasm for playing, they sound a little bit better with the new studio recording options, the record is fun and belongs in every record collection, but that will be difficult, because it is limited to 150 copies: 75 on orange, 75 on green vinyl and was released via In The Red Recordings. You can find more splendid recordings on the compilation All Loud On The Western Front from 1989, which includes their two 7Inches from their active life-span. I think, I have piqued your interest & I am grateful for such great input.

THE GRAPPLERS - Live! 7'' 1980
Next rare piece is the sole 7Inch by the Grapplers and the band consisted of Steve & Brian (vocals/guitars), Paul (bass), Ed (drums) and this dittie was released via Sonic and it's called 'Live!' and was recorded Live In a Studio in New York. and that's all information I could get about these gentlemen. Both songs have a nice drive and the guitars sound decently dirty, the tempo is pleasant and the other instruments are carefully used, they can do something and that's all it takes to write an interesting piece, and with a length of two and a half minutes each, it fits excellently. A rare little entertaining listening pleasure and definitely worth to invite them on a Compilation.

V/A - Novi Punk Val 78-80 1981
A quick jump back in the past, when birds were still singing, there weren't 1000 TV channels and children were still playing outside and not getting fat, Novi Punk Val (New Punk Wave), a cult Compilation from the former Yugoslavia, was born and took the opportunity to get a little attention among all the American & English Punk bands that were making one record after another in the early Eighties, and like a sea of roses in spring, it managed to become a sought-after rarity today. This gem was released in collaboration with the two Ljubljana labels ZKP RTVL/ŠKUC and features eight bands that had already released a few records at the time and some that were just starting out. Musically I would classify them as very diverse, hardly any Hardcore stuff to be heard but solid mid-tempo numbers plus some electronic noises that are largely acceptable and don't cause confusion, the bands there were just different & special, and that is exactly why we love them. An excellent introduction for anyone who wants to get into Yugoslavian Punkrock.

THE NIKOTEENS - Slamdance Party Vol.3 1986
When we talk about Ingolstadt, only one band immediately comes to my mind: The Nikoteens. I'm sure fans of quality German HardcorePunk will know straight away that the guys have released their first album via the Cologne Malermeister, which doesn't sound bad at all. Circa two years later a tape was recorded named Hardcore Holocaust (1985), which can be read on the front cover, and thirteen of the eighteen songs were finally immortalized on this fucking vinyl, brought us by Starving Missile. And the fact that Americans also like fast, aggressive sounds from overseas is proven by a short and snappy review: Divided into a “Romantic” side and a “Realistic” side, this band pulls off an out-of-the-ordinary LP. Their punk is not generic usually, but doesn’t really drift into experimentation or post-punk to pull it off. Can’t really say what it is, but it’s a tad different. Worth checking out. (Tim Yohannan, MRR #38 • July 1986) The postman was just here with new material and I will get to it immediately to repay the donor who lent me the record. That means I'll be away for a while. Enjoy this brilliant album with a cold beer. I say Cheers, Baby!

ANGELIC UPSTARTS - Reason Why? 1983
Now a classic one and everyone who follows this blog knows that I am a huge Angelic Upstarts maniac and I am happy to have been able to experience them live. Friends of the band know that they screwed up extremely badly with the previous album, as their record company at the time demanded that they tame their roots and put a miserable pop producer in front of them and demanded an album that would increase sales and it turned out to be, of course, a huge disappointment (although the original demos were really usable). Any sensible Upstarts friend couldn't help but thoroughly dissect this fourth album in a negative way. They went quiet and the deal with Anagram Records finally ensured a furious 'comeback' with some of what are now classics and showed the team back in their usual guise. Further infos are included on the insert, although I only have the CD version and some of it is poorly documented. Anyway, Reason Why? is a strong relic and of immense importance in the band's extensive discography.
KAKA DE LUXE & PARAÍSO - Split 12'' 1982
Rare 12Inch record by two Spanish combos from Madrid: Kaka De Luxe with five songs and Paraíso with two, on Chapa Discos. There is actually not much to review because, on the one hand, both bands are presented in detail in the blog and, on the other hand, this little ode to joy is refreshing and needs no further words and I don't want to bore you any longer about my household chores, but the sound fits perfectly and wiping the dust gets more easier. One more thing, I would be interested in the Paraíso Compilation El Corte Final from Munster Records, if anyone has it digitally I would be happy to receive it, and please with scans.

THE EJECTORS - Hydrohead 2006
Yesterday I converted a lot of music and came across the following combo: The Ejectors, a five piece founded 1980 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and members were Scott (vocals), Ashley & Scott (guitars), Richard (bass), Fred (drums). In their short life-span they released only a 7Inch on VVV Records with two great tracks. One of them is 'Hydro-Head' and that beauty was covered by the Hamburg combo 3000 ¥ in 1994 and I never looked for the original and now I've come across it. The five also recorded tracks for an album, but somehow it never came to a release until 2006, when the essential label RaveUp Records made these treasures available for us as part of its American Lost Punk Rock Nuggets, after the master tapes were recovered from a band member's closet and carefully restored, and for good reason. Great Anthology!

CLOCK OF TIME - Pestilent Planet 12'' 2020
Time for something new and if you have Positive Energie #2, you know this band from Berlin, if not you should definitely catch up. Pestilent Planet is an extremely dark name for an album but take a look yourself, the record came out five years ago and nothing has changed and I think the band is more concerned with the stupid morons who are destroying our earth with their madness, profit thinking and useless ideas. You know exactly what I mean, look at Europe and the USA, what idiots are deciding there is no longer acceptable. But I don't want to get political, that's not what wdthtc is here for, you have surely your own opinion, I feel the album is very good and unfortunately it is their only album to date. A bit of info: Debut seven track 12Inch from Berlin’s Clock Of Time (Corey, Tobi, Nordberg, Seth & Kalo.) and it’s released a mere eight months (limited mailorder edition of 200 copies on translucent green vinyl) after they played their first gig. The band comes fully formed and up to speed but that is not surprising considering some of the members other projects such as Diät, Vexx and Useless Eaters. Pestilent Planet is a stunning statement of intent. The sound is a driving mix of PostPunk like Jeopardy era The Sound, and that classic 80's Death Rock that Vex and Arch Criminals perfected. It’s instant and urgent, for example just tracks like 'Rotten Master' which has a fuller Joy Division esque vibe especially in the skeletal guitar hook. It will be love on first listen." (Sean Forbes) - I'm tired, enough for today, it was a long day of music, enjoy!
LOU MIAMI & THE KOZMETIX - Fascist Lover 7'' 1982
Nice little one today and I quote the info from wiki: Lou Miami was a Punk musician based in Boston, Massachusetts. His group, the Kozmetix, was popular on the local scene but rarely toured and released two EPs. He combined a rough Punk sound with a glam-influenced choice of clothing. As was typical for many Punk bands at the time, the Kozmetix regularly played at The Rathskeller, the Channel, Jonathan Swifts, Cantones, and Spit as well as New York venues such as the Peppermint Lounge, and the old Living Room in Providence, Rhode Island. Lou Miami & the Kozmetix also regularly played the Inn-Square Men's Bar in Inman Square, Cambridge/Massachusetts. In The Kozmetix, Miami was the lead singer, Jack Rootoo played lead guitar, H.P. (aka Helen Privett) bass, Dolores Paradise organ, and Laural Blanchard on drums. During the band's touring years of 1979–1981 the Kozmetix line-up was Miami (vocals), Rootoo (guitars), Bill (bass) and Melody on drums. Norcott and Chisholm were previously members of Phobia (they made one 7Inch in 1979 called What Will You Do?). This line-up had a regular Monday night gig at Cantones for two years, as well as appearing at numerous clubs in the Boston area. The group was managed by Joan Martin. (Note: the band toured past 1981. They were regulars at the Living Room on Promenade St. in Providence, at least up until 1983.) Their first single Fascist Lover was sold in a white plastic cosmetics bag that mimicked a Lord & Taylor shopping bag. Their debut mini-album was produced by Ann Prim & Karen Kirby, both from the Boston based band November Group. On their last 12Inch, Rituals, the band consisted of Lou (vocals), Rootoo & Toby (guitars), H.P. (bass) and Laurel (drums). Additional musicians used were Chris Spedding and Kristi Rose. Lou Miami died of heart failure in Los Angeles in August 1995. Jack Rootoo (Richard J. Galvin) died of esophageal cancer in Massachusetts on June 13, 2008, at the age of 51. Excellent A-side with a lively forward pace, the flip is a bit hanging but just as bearable.

MYSTERY GIRLS - Rock'N'Roll With Helen & Jenny EP 1983
Now a record I know absolutely nothing about and by the looks of things it was never released. They were at home in Switzerland and never released an official record. Fact is, two girls on the microphone, Helen & Jenny, and they were supported by Brian (guitars) and Zmotron (bass/drums) and I give you the valuable information, from unknown source, that was included: "Back in 1983, Mr. Ratboy was Brian Blade, the guitarist for The Mystery Girls, a Shangri-Las/Dolls/Modern Lovers-influenced combo whose only recorded legacy is a very rare acetate 33 RPM single, limited to only five copies with a xeroxed cover. The four tracks featured here are the far-superior demos recorded in Switzerland with a full band that included not only the future World Famous Mr Ratboy, but also the enigmatic Zmotron, who went on to play in an early incarnation of the Dogs D’Amour under the name Mark Draxx." - Why this fantastic EP didn't make it to the public is a mystery, because all the four goodies are a solid mix of Punk, PowerPop, Indie and so on, deliciously played and as tasty as my meatballs yesterday, a bit more melodic and spicy enough, and the vocals are absolutely delicate. Fantastic record in every way and one that captivated me from the start, love is so diverse and always a beautiful topic. Forget all the stupid artificial pop crap when you’ve heard this.

Breakfast at MEZ Vol.2 ... are you hungry?
Last but not least, a culinary highlight. You all know meatballs and they are best made at home. My special ingredients for these are 500g minced ringer meat, an onion, a tablespoon of Dijon mustard, two cloves of garlic, minced meat seasoning, 4 eggs and salt & pepper. Then knead them thoroughly, cleaning the handles in between, of course, and then fry in olive oil... done! Why Volume 2? It's very simple, Volume 1 has already been celebrated. Have fun making it, it takes about an hour in total. And the best thing is to use the Halt! Compilation as a musical accompaniment, which is what I used today, but of course any other cool music will work too. Bon Appetit!!

V/A - A Traves De Los Barrotes EP 1993
Small benefiz Compilation from the Iberian peninsula and this was created with the intention of expanding the campaign for the freedom of Pablo Serrano and raising funds for this project and four bands that I know nothing about, but that doesn't mean much, were ultimately passionate about it. Well, that was yesterday and I don't know if the proceeds brought something positive for him... what I know, this is a fascinating contemporary document that captures the musical diversity and creative spirit of people there in the early 90s. This compilation offers a deep insight into the subcultural diversity and currents of social issues that were relevant in Spain at that time. The selection of bands and songs is both varied and representative, creating a dynamic soundscape that is both nostalgic and timeless. Many of the songs reflect the challenges and hopes of the always dull society and the backgrounds and emotions worth thinking about. The arrangements are carefully designed and offer a balanced mix of melody & rhythm and also aggressive hardcore and light metal sounds, the record invites you to sing along and dance. Overall, A Traves De Los Barrotes is an important cultural artifact and is a tribute to the creativity and expression of the Spanish underground scene, very inspiring.

THE DYAKS - Gutter Kids 7'' 1977
Original released without a label, 1978 via Bonaparte Records with another B-side but all three goddies in this file. Info: The Dyaks were Chris (vocals/guitars), Groll (bass), Brian (drums) and Chris was also behind Jabberwock who produced the Majestic Proggy Glamster Sneakin’ Snaky around the same time. The Dyaks is a punky name and they had a punky sounding single title and a punky cover with a knife wielding kid on the front. But sorry to say, in all truth, an abysmal record that definitely isn’t Punk, PowerPop or NewWave. The single was Gutter Kids/It's A Game and it’s from the Punk school of The Who with its crashing open chords and melodic chorus but somehow fails to convince. A second single On The Run was recorded in February 1978 as a follow up but was never released (limited to 25 or less copies) which is more of the same. The earlier version of Gutter Kids (probably recorded at Pathway Studios in July 1977) is so much better than the released version. Here the guitar slash and crash in an updated 66 Who windmill fashion, while the song structure wins out by debuting the rousing chorus earlier than in the released version with the harmonies bringing a nice Powerpop sprinkling to Proceedings. The flip starts off in Clash mode before going nice and melodic, with an end betraying their pre-punk musicianship. The Dyaks/Jabberwock were really stuck in the middle of Year 0, unsure which bus to take, but as exemplified here; the superior chops and melodic core they possessed were in stark contrast to other more “credible” and run-of-the mill bandwagon Jumpers. Also featured on interesting Compilations, but only the title track of their first single was used for all, hmmmm..... well...at least. Remains to be mentioned that all the studio songs, only fucking four, are included in this delicious cocktail and you can decide for yourself which one is your favorite. It's time for a break, I'm done.
SCHOOL TIES - No Future 7'' 1980
Now a rare 7Inch by this five piece called School Ties, founded in Hitchin and they consisted of Lian (vocals), Kevin (guitars), Alan (bass), Patrick (drums) & Chris (keyboard), they released their debut without a sleeve via SCF Records and I can't give more infos about the bio or anything else. Fact is, they made two 7Inches, this ist their first one and the second, which also contains two songs, were used for the essential The Quest Tapes Compilation from 1982. But their contribution to the also rare England Belongs To Me #2 Compi proves that they are valued and not everyone gets this attention from the detectives (they aren't gods either). Well, the title track is a refreshing statement with heart that exactly reflects the attitude to life at that time in the UK, a nice mid-tempo number with subtle keyboards... very very nice. The flip, on the other hand, is a bit bumpy, it comes across as stomping but the clean production makes up for everything. Also nice, especially the short solo keyboard sounds kind of snippy. I would say it's exactly the perfect sound to start breakfast, with a cold beer on a cold winter's day, the weekend is safe, only my broken toe is starting to get on my nerves.

ACTIVES - Wait & See 12'' 1984
Before I write any nonsense about the pseudo-love day Valentine, I first go to the Kiosk and get myself some poisonous stuff. Don't get me wrong but I don't like these 'self-made social days' at all and it is pathetic that people need such ready-made instructions, I think that if you love your partner, you definitely don't need these pre-arranged and coordinated events. Love comes from the heart, and even if it's empty, you know exactly what to do. And if anyone would like to take this as an opportunity, go ahead... it's never too late to express your love. I'm babbling nonsense again, let's get to the post damn it.... The Actives, hailing from Dunfermline and were formed in 1981 by friends & roadies of already established Anarcho-Punk band the Alternative. The inaugural line-up was Lewis (vocals), Budgie (bass) and Paul (drums). A number of temporary guitarists came & went until Graeme joined in 1982. They quickly recorded a couple of demos, the second of which impressed enough to see them secure a publishing deal with Strategy Music in London. A recording deal with Quiet Records, a subsidiary of the larger Illuminated Records, followed shortly after. In 1983 came then their debut album Kick It Down which is in my opinion an excellent Scottish Punkrock jewel. Four cool goodies on this and I'm sure you like them.

V/A - Wahrschauer CD #1 1995
Today we come to an interesting Compilation that was created by a Berlin fanzine called Wahrschauer in 1995. At that time, there was an increasing trend to include a free CD as a supplement in the Heftsche, see OX, ZAP or others, in order to introduce new bands/music to the valued readers and of course to give the respective protagonists a platform to become better known through the local scene and thus attract attention and thus enable concerts outside their radius. This didn't always meet with a positive response, some said it was only intended to increase their circulation to Punk fans, but I think it is an excellent idea, because it is the only way for the 'small' bands to have a chance of being heard. And the Berlin Wahrschauer fanzine stuck to this brilliantly, because most of the CDs featured Berlin bands and in some cases the quality was astonishing. The special thing about it is always the do-it-yourself booklet, you just have to cut out the stuff, the dimensions are excellently formatted on the jewel case and you have an excellent self-made copy, which is fun and saves money. I can't say whether that's still the case today, I bought my last fanzine around that time, in the late 90s. Today, with social networks and online reading, that's all a thing of the past, but that was innovation and you were always waiting for the new issue. Well, dear friends, that's how it is. You almost degenerate into a rotten vegetable. I still have a few of them in stock, not many, but they will come out eventually, enjoy the music. Cheers!

THE NOODLES - Dead For Nothing 7'' 1987
The Noodles were a five piece from from Angers and consisted of Gilles (vocals), Bruno & Doume (guitars), Jean-Mi (bass), Jeff (drums). Following their bassist's death (unfortunately, the release of the mini-album was marked by a tragic event, Jean-Mi was killed in a road accident), the band disbanded after releasing only one EP and one mini-album. I think, I give you two reviews from the time of release and you can see what a great PowerRock band they were: “Do we have any idea of calling ourselves the Noodles? Especially when, like these Angevins, we are capable of such vigorous titles, between Hoodoo Gurus and Real Kids. Perfect production due to Christophe Sourice, and compositions still a little rough but whose merit is already to offer a perfect welcome to the guitars that sound like a cavalry charge”. (Monique Sabatier, Nineteen #23, June 87) - “Dead For Nothing is a real electric shock, wild and devastating… To be placed with the first Damned, Pistols, Buzzcocks…” (Rock Hardi n°15/16, 1987) - In 2017, Nineteen Something/[PIAS] released a CD compilation with all their studio songs, including their compilation contributions, which you can check out on bandcamp. What remains are some excellent songs from a short-lived band that wasn't able to conquer the French Punkrock ocean...... Dead For Nothing!

POP GUNS - Home Address... The Burning Road 7'' 1980
Now a rare PowerPop goodie by the short-lived Pop Guns, a three piece Jonathan (vocals/guitars), Steve (guitar), Graham (bass) with Larry (drums) on these recordings and this is their only piece on the singers label Radium Wreckords. More is unfortunately not published, except one more song was included on the great tape Compilation World Class Punk from 1984. The web says 1999 came an unofficial album out, The Complete Pop Guns 1980/1981 and this sucker includes fourteen songs that were part of the original recording session but I never seen it anywhere. Two nice mid-tempo numbers with cool guitars while the flip is a cool slowdown hit. Overall very nice.
