ROCKS - Combat Zone 1994

Only album by Rocks on Kangaroo Records and it took a long time for the band to become active again. In 1978 they brought their legendary You'r So Boring EP on Point Blank Records (500 copies) out and and set with that an astonishing exclamation point, 1995 re-issued as CD with bonus tracks. I first came in contact with them through Tepid Spit Artists, an unofficial tape compilation what I acquired from Incognito Records. Short basics: "Rocks, please, never put a “The” in front, were Sydney based Punx which started its life as a three piece in 1976 with childhood friends Bill Webb (a.k.a. Bill Posters) Drums/Lead Vocals, Peter Davie Guitar/Vocals and Steve Vanderschoot Bass/Lead Vocals. Having jammed together after school and on weekends and with their love for early 70’s rock surging through their veins, it was no surprise they would turn to Punk as they forged ahead finding a style to become a band. When bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols came along, it was obvious what they had become and they would go on to be one of Sydney’s best loved Punkrock bands..." Combat Zone is twenty-two times fresh sound combined with catchy melodies. Rocks are still active and occur at irregular intervals here and there somewhere. Enjoy the album & the warm rays of the sun with a cold beer.

AGGRESSIVA KOSTYMER - s/t 7'' 2014

A real rarity is this 7Inch by a combo from Norrköping which had a short lifespan, 1978-1981, and left few recordings. A bit info from punktjafs: Aggressiva Kostymer was formed in summer 1978 at Café Röda Tuppen, a gathering place for lost Peking punks, progs and other lost people. The basic set was Per (vocals/guitar), Johan (guitar), Undertaker (bass) and Kryddan (drums). Undertaker leave and Peter came in, Kryddan also left the band shortly afterwards and was replaced by Micke. The band focused to play live as much as possible, mostly in Central Sweden. It was popular at this time to record at least one single, but not for them, "Live" it would be, that was real Punk for the band. But despite this, they paid a visit to a studio in Norrköping in the spring of 1979, which resulted in at least the songs "Plastkärlek" and "19 År" were taped. These two cannon songs lay and collected dust until Slyngel Rekords finally released them on vinyl in 2014 in an edition of 300 copies. Aggressiva Kostymer hung off their jackets in 1981, with the flag at the top. Two superb blasts!

ROTTING CARCASS & WUT - Split EP 1985

Brilliant split 12'' by two great bands on More Fun Records in yellow multicoloured vinyl. First Wut with their "Alles Schon Mal Gesehen-Alles Schon Mal Gehört!" side and all five songs are among the best, what the band, Schetty (vocals), Olli (guitars), Holger (bass) & Jörg (drums), ever recorded: angry, aggressive, energetic and bombastic noises in a perfect fat sound. Nothing is missing, top grade! The dance continue by "...Their Last Testament", the Rotting Carcass side, a four piece which were formed 1982 in Kempten by Batz & Hesse (vocals/bass), Tommy (guitars), Kurty (drums) and after a successful tour with the Toy Dolls in 1985 they parted ways. Their five songs are pure pogosmasher, wild and snotty, catchy and easy flammable. In 1995, Six Pack Records brought their complete 1984 studio session on vinyl, partly hand-numbered editions. Great record by two bands who speaks an offensive language.

V/A - Times Still Here EP 2002

Buckle up people, now comes a cool little round unique item, a useful Portuguese Straight Edge compilation from Best Times Records with six bands and it gets fast, loud and noisy. I can't tell you much about the bands but that makes the great insert that has all the information ready, band members, lyrics and liner notes from the makers. Absolute hardcore slab that blows out nine attacks in fifteen minutes. I think, I bought the EP on a record fair many years ago, on the one hand because of the cool cover, on the other I was interested in SE sound from Portugal, I don't often find stuff from this country. I would say, it was worth it. Enjoy!

THE SEIZE - Everybody Dies EP 1982

Second 7Inch by the Seize on Why Not? Records and here at work Colin (vocals/bass), Ross & Tim (guitars), Chewy (drums). Four catchy pieces and a short review: It's been a long time since their first single and the SEIZE haven't come out of the garage yet. In the great tradition of slam, crash, and slobber, this EP has a nasty edge and should be played at high volume. Four great ditties are included, but "In For Me" is the standout track. (Ruth Sschwartz, MMR #3, Nov. 1982) - More hearing orgasms of the four in the blog.

GÖTEBORG SOUND - Rik Man, Fattig Man 7'' 1978

One more tonight and a visit to Gothenburg is always worthwhile because some very good punk bands from the early years are at home here. For example: Göteborg Sound. They consists of Lars-Olof (vocals), Björn & Dennis (guitars), Ulf (bass), Janne (drums) and they have five 7inches plus an album out. This is their second one, released via their own label GBG Records with three different covers, 300 copies each and with two goodies. I first got to know them with the Björn Borg single, which I sucked many years ago at kbdrecords and was immediately enthusiastic, a fantastic cracker that has everything a punk song should have, unfortunately is this record miles away from it. But that is secondary, the five have really recorded very good music and the compilation from 2019 on Bengans with all their slabs proves this impressively (slumbering on my hard drive as well and will surely come at some point). Also represented on great compis, two of that Bloodstains Across Sweden #3 and Back To Front Vol.2 are also worth hearing. And with that, an exhausting Monday comes to an end, now I need my beauty sleep. Chrrr......

TOTO LOTTO - s/t EP 1980

Sorry for the delay but all re-up requests are fixed. Next post and there are not many legacies by this band, only an EP from 1980 and a tape (Ohne Gewähr, 1982). That may be because they weren't really punk rock. Toto Lotto was a experimental Jazz/Punk/Wave band from Frankfurt, formed 1979 and disbanded in early 1982, and they consisted of Christoph (vocals/sax), Rüdiger & Hans (guitars), Walter (bass), Bernhard (drums). Well, the three songs are quickly described, a four-minute piece as an opener that is hard to digest, number two a driving bass-heavy middle piece and the last a brilliant one-minute punk piece, the best of all. All sung in English and lyrically not bad at all. On one compilation present, Schau Hör Main Herz Ist Rhein, on Wahrnehmungen Records.

ZERO ZERO - s/t LP 1981

Friends, yesterday was a real football thriller and the three points at the end are well deserved. As a small consolation we are visiting the Bavarian capital today and meet an interesting band which were active in the early 80s and Zero Zero released two albums and three singles, they consited of Gerald (vocals, guitar, synth), Jens (vocals, bass, synth), Peter (drums) and as guest Mike (sax) and my first contact with three piece Zero Zero came through the very good Reifenwechsel Leicht Gemacht compilation on Lächerlich! Schallplatten. Their debut (released via Null Null Records) contains thirteen catchy differentiated nervous goodies which are audible throughout and I really enjoy it. With the second album (Herzklopfen) they became more success-oriented and the 7Inch "Irrenanstalt" from that was a small hit and used on numerous mainstream NDW samplers. I hope, my Weißwurst friends are happy with that and now enjoy the warm sunny February Sunday.

MCD - Bilboko Gaztetxean 1987

Decent debut album by MCD (Me Cago En Dios) on Discos Suicidas, recorded live @ Bilbo's Gaztetxe, January 1987 and I must first point out the outstanding sound quality and in this context I immediately have Slime's Pankehallen (released 1984) slab on my radar, which for me is by far the best live album of all time, the energy and power of these recordings remains unique to date, but Bilboko Gaztetxean is definitely at the top of this list. MCD was formed in Bilbao between 1978-1979 by Niko (bass) and his brother Bernar (drums) and with Bronkoki (voice) & Ruffus Fuck-Off (guitar) they entered the stage 1981 with Vulpess. In the mid 80s, Niko & Rockan, with the help of Virgi and Bernar, recorded their only demo. The band doesn't gave many concerts, but it included scandals such as the Bilbao Carnival, where the group was "banned" from municipal concerts in their city; the band found its sound with the entry of Joakin in 1986 and finally they released their debut in January 1987. From then, with some line-up changes, it went very well for MCD, numerous albums and 7Inches were made and after their inactive break from 2004 to 2011 they're still active. So folks, in an hour the longed-for match against Bayern.

THE BAITERS - Droga För Att Våga EP 1979

 

Short and sweet the next slab and a bit infos about the band from punktjafs: "The Baiters were born out of Confusion (formed Nov-Dec 77) where Ubbe (guitars) and Johan Fredriksson (bass) were in. In spring '78 bassist Johan Skogh was added and the name was changed to Baiters. At first, the group mixed Swedish and English lyrics, the original for the upcoming single track "Raggare give up" was then called "Raggare piss off". Their big stage debut, they made at the Rock Against racism gala, at Kåren in September -78 together with bands like Skabb, Ebba Grön and GBG Sound. After that, the band was expanded with singer Zäta, this quartet made their debut together with Stoodes at the classic Medborgarhuset gig, an evening that was banded. In autumn-winter 78-79 they were one of the most popular punk bands in Stockholm. They regularly gigged at venues such as Fyran and Musikverket, where they played a total of eleven times. In February '79, the band recorded their debut single (Attack Records) which received good reviews in the daily press. The album also played in the radio program "Hemkört" where Gyllene Tider also made its radio debut. Baiters also participated in the Rock for the Job gala with, among others, Grisen Skriker and Ebba Grön. For single #2, the band had a contract with MNW. The album had a more pop sound and also received positive reviews, but it also became the group's last record. Ubbe and Johan later formed Rex De Rox who released an EP - Modern Mysteries at EMI. Johan Fredriksson can be found today on TV4 as a foreign reporter." Represented on numerous compilations, Bloodstains Across Sweden is one of them.

V/A - En Samling Rock Från Sundsvall Anno 1985

Endlich Wochenende and I can tell you the last working days were exhausting but now three days off on Saturday the important football match against Bayern. Let's start with a not so much punk record and not all on it meets my taste but it's a rare and solid double LP compilation from Massproduktion, a local punklabel which started in 1979 and have developed ever since and on this slab you can listen to fourteen combos which swim more in the rock genre, and you already suspect it, all from Sundsvall. I think, besides Stockholm and Gothenburg, the city with a lot of bands and probably good opportunities. Well, the only combo I know are Vacum, they made two superb 7 inches and a great album in their early days, at least that's what I know, but their two tracks here are brutally bad, how does that work? Of course, further development is okay, but not like that, my time would be too precious for that. Well, all in all an interesting mix and that counts. Take a sniff!

TURBOSTAAT - Live @ Clouds Hill 10'' 2014

Always welcome in my theater and a band I appreciate very much and enjoy is Turbostaat from Husum, now located in Flensburg. The five came up with the splendid idea for their fifteen-year existence to organize a tour under the motto: "fifteen years, two evenings, sixty-three songs", quasi birthday tour. On two evenings in a row, they play all sixty-three songs that have been released on record so far. On the first evening the songs from the first two and a half albums, on the second evening the songs from the following two albums... This slendid  10Inch with eight songs was recorded live on 21.09.2013 @ Clouds Hill Recordings in Hamburg and only available for ticket owners to the band's 15th anniversary tour. All of these copies are signed by the band. After the tour the band sold a few unsigned leftover copies through their homebase. Limited to 4000 pieces. In my concert life I only had such a brilliant experience with EA80, but then I had to drive from one place to the next and here it was the same location on both evenings. I was completely exhausted after the first show and by the second evening, a Sunday, I really had to pull myself together but it was worth. Great and unforgettable moments/memories, I am very grateful for that! Now enjoy the record and notice: Turbostaat are and will remain Jan (vocals), Roland & Marten (guitars), Torbert (bass), Peter (drums).

MORNINGTON CRESCENT - Still Shocking 2012

Now it's getting loud & fast and one more combo which I had no sound to date. This compilation includes all their recordings plus unreleased material and was released through Gummopunx Records in a limited edition of 500 copies, 300 on black vinyl and 200 on green transparent. I'll feed you with a few basics from discogs: "Faster than the Dickies, cheaper than Albert Heyn, more shocking than Dallas" (from their 1982 tape cover). Taking their name from a London underground rail station, Mornington Crescent formed in December 1980. After a few lineup shuffles, they first settled on Stan (vocals and guitar), Erik (drums), Jasper (bass). Soon adding Emile as their second guitarist, this raw hardcore band from Amsterdam recorded their first demo in May of '82 simply entitled Cassette 1. By 1983 they were joined by a new singer, Hans, whose distinctive gruff vocals can be heard on their first and only record, the self-released EP Greetings From Amsterdam. Apparently the band did not play live often, and although a track from the EP appeared on a flexi given away with Chainsaw fanzine in the UK, little more was heard of them after 1984." I am pleasantly surprised and like the record, recommended!.

BUZZCOCKS - Total Pop 1987

Rare, Live And Great 1977-80, that's here including. Rare B-sides & live cuts (from the Roxy recordings), released via Weird System. A bit wiki info: Buzzcocks were formed in Bolton 1976 by singer-songwriter-guitarist Pete Shelley and singer-songwriter Howard Devoto. They are regarded as a seminal influence on the Manchester music scene, the independent record label movement, Punkrock, PowerPop and Pop Punk. They achieved commercial success with singles that fused pop craftsmanship with rapid-fire Punk energy. These singles were collected on Singles Going Steady, described by critic Ned Raggett as a "Punk Masterpiece". Devoto and Shelley chose the name "Buzzcocks" after reading the headline, "It's the Buzz, Cock!", in a review of the TV series Rock Follies in Time Out magazine. The "buzz" is the excitement of playing on stage; "cock" is northern English slang meaning "friend". They thought it captured the excitement of the nascent punk scene, as well as having humorous sexual connotations following Pete Shelley's time working in a Bolton adult shop. Per the band, there is no "the" in Buzzcocks. Devoto left the band in 1977, after which Pete Shelley became the principal singer-songwriter. Shelley died on 6 December 2018, but the band has remained active with guitarist and co-founding member Steve Diggle assuming lead vocal duties. They added a new guitarist Mani Perazzoli. They are still touring and draw in large crowds from around the world. A decent Compilation, I think, full with the band's classics.

V/A - Fun's Not Dead 1985

Inspired by Nolti's birthday repetition, which is full of numerous D-Punk classics and songs I haven't heard for a long time, I thought I rummage on my hard drive and check out what's elegant there. The result is this decent compilation by More Fun Records with fine and exclusive pieces by eight bands which made their vinyl debut in the mid-eighties. The selection is quite convincing and for me it belongs to one of the positive apparitions in this sector. Came partly in colored vinyl and detailed inserts which are unfortunately not available here, maybe someone has useful scans for me. The slab became a victim of my lack of solvency at that time and that is of course annoying. Egal, sometime is Schulz anyway. If you like these bands take a look around the blog, you'll find more stuff for sure. Now I'm chilling a little and I'm hot for the match against Cologne later. Prost!

ANTI-GANG & ARLEQUIN - Split EP 2018

Here's a nice piece that was only released as promo in an edition of 40 copies and later an accessory of the eight EP box compilation De La Pure Came !! 32 titres Punk-Rock-Cold Inédits 1977/1982 is, published by the magnificent French label Cameleon Records. Anti-Gang was a four piece from Nice and were active in the eighties and apart from these three songs no further recordings exist, Arlequin from Angoulême has a 7Inch which they published themselves in 1979 and they were active from 1976 and split in the end of 1981. Solid record with five lost numbers.

DE VENERIAS - Monarki 7'' 2016

Today we visit Stockholm first, I think the following band came from there, at least both songs of this fantastic 7Inch were recorded there back in 1979. De Venerias consisted of Johnny (vocals), Leif (guitar), Claes (bass) and Peter (drums). Allow me to give you some infos from my favorite punksite swedishpunkfanzine here because, a) comes from the country, b) excellent archive and always worth a visit, c) all infos about this record in a nutshell, d) why write everything twice. "This is the Holy Grail!!!! The band could not afford to make a 7Inch release. However – they made sure that a test press was made as payment was not expected until the real records were presses. Quite smart, quite punk. Of the four testpresses one is for sure damaged when one of the members became Hare Krishna. Two records are with collectors and the last one… no one knows. 'Monarki' was on the Killed By Death #51 compilation. The rumor is that the B-side is even greater than the A-side but the owners are keeping the secret how the song sounds for themselves." Well, now you can find out for yourselfs because this rare sucker was re-released of course by Slyngel Rekords, the label for rare lost Swedish Punk Nuggets, in an edition of 300 copies on yellow vinyl. And if the words haven't convinced you yet, move your fat ass to bandcamp and turn to maximum volume and kill yourself.

MODERN MINDS - Go! 2007

The Modern Minds were a PowerPop combo from Edmonton and consisted of Moe (vocals & guitars), Bob (bass) and Kim (drums), founded in the bedroom community of St. Albert. All three had known each other for years and had played together previously, the band in its present form and attitude was formed in January 1979. They made their debut in June '79 at Bordon Park as The News. In January 1980 the name was changed to The Modern Minds. In the same year they met an enchanting creature and Theresa's World on Bumstead Records from 1981 is their only record and in her Bungalow Rock we find three golden goblets with exquisite northern Italian frangolino, the taste of which reminds us of ripe red strawberries, and invites us to pluck the endless fields of temptation.

The band has been accused of being too raw and unpolished, of having potential but who can't or won't refine themselves into a slick suitable for mass market appeal, they have struggled with this attitude and with the difficult Edmonton music scene since their beginnings. This struggle may be a result of the fact that the Modern Minds feel no obligation to anyone or anything except themselves and the music they feel is important. Due to the negative vibrations of all these assholes, their Rock'N'Roll ghosts slowly faded and the band broke up; It's Gone! In the last several years, Theresa has gained some notoriety and, along with some additional recordings, released on this small compilation with eleven melodic and raw songs as CD in 2007 through a small Japanese label called 'Base' & finally reissued as vinyl in 2018 by UglyPop Records (1st press in red/300 copies & 2nd press in black/500 copies). Solid release with massive infos within & high explosive 💣💣💣

T.S.O.L. - Dance With Me 1981

Now a remarkable classic and these gentlemen already appeared in this theatre and since I can't add anything with my own words, I use these who have already said it. Short info by Bradley Torreano from allmusic: "In the early years of Los Angeles punk, one of the premiere hardcore bands was T.S.O.L., which stood for True Sounds Of Liberty. Offering poppier music than many of their contemporaries and featuring an image that appealed to punks who wanted to dive deeper into the gothic subgenre already being offered by many British punk bands, T.S.O.L. became hugely popular on the local scene but never translated that success to national exposure because of their ever-shifting lineup and sound. Formed in 1978 by four pasty-faced youths with a passion for the emerging hardcore scene, T.S.O.L. was originally based in Huntington Beach, California. Featuring the lineup of vocalist Jack Grisham, guitarist Ron Emory, bassist Mike Roche, and drummer Todd Barnes, the band burst onto the local club scene with an image that included white face paint and dark, energetic anthems about alienation and troubled youth. A few members had already tried their luck with a band called Vicious Circle, so gigs in the South Bay and Orange County were easy to get despite many of those shows ending with riots that would ban them from the very same clubs. A politically fueled eponymous EP would be the band's first official release, and its emotional sound and vicious attitude were enough to ensure their standing as a major force in the scene...."

Dance With Me is the debut album by T.S.O.L. and was released 1981 though Frontier Records. While the band's eponymously titled debut EP, released earlier that year, had been filled with radical leftist lyrics, this record moved away from politics in favor of horror film- and gothic-inspired subject matter. The album includes the bands most well-known song, the necrophilia-themed "Code Blue". Colossal & Outstanding record in every way, you better be quick!

VICTIM - The Teen Age EP 1980

Third and final 7Inch from Victim on Illuminated Records with three crackers. The band was founded mid 1977 in Belfast (relocated to Manchester in 1979) and soon they became familiar faces on the fast-emerging Belfast punk scene. On this record, produced by Rat Scabies, Wesley (vocals & bass), Joe (guitars) and Jeff (drums). Started as four piece they released two EP's in the late seventies. They toured a lot with renowned bands and a fourth single plus further demos were recorded but unfortunately never released and little of it is left and after undergoing several line-up changes, the band existed until 1990. But hope came when in 2003 Overground Records released a compilation of all of their early works and 2016 two more CD's came out with new and revised material of the late phase. Also guest on Bloodstains and Killed By Death #33. Great Stuff.

DIE HETEROS - Leistung 7'' 1982

Active in the early 80ies, die Heteros were a five piece, Karen (vocals), Wolli (guitars), Bram (bass), Mark (drums), Hajo (sax/vocals), from Cologne and released one nice album (Die Romantik Ist Tot) on Telefunken and from this are these two very contrasting tracks thrown as single on the market. First, the refusal song 'Leistung' in which they give a clear rejection of our competitive society, nice swing mode. On the flip-side a cheeky cheerful instrumental version of a classic german schlager. Punk meets NDW - nothing earth shattering but old material and mostly good. Brrr, now quickly a hot tea and turn the heating up, minus 10 fucking degrees.

STEVE ROBERTS - Do You Know Who I Am? 1982

Drummer Steve Roberts (U.K. Subs, Cyanide, Exploited) with his rare solo album, released via The Exploited Record Company. Thirteen typical UK smasher from the early 80s he wrote here (five of them cover versions) and capable musicians support him in the implementation of his musical creations. Not bad the record and a new positive surprise for me. If you like the sound of the bands above you can't ignore this album. Now it's time for the ten o'clock tea.

RED BERET - First Impression 1984

Damn cool and an amazing First Impression by Red Beret, a four piece from Long Beach and this is their only album on Bemisbrain Records. And if I compare their music with the post before, I would throw their slab immediately in the trashcan. Twelve fantastic melodic nuggets have the four, Victor (vocals), Jimmy (guitars), Greg (bass) and Tony (drums), recorded and I'm really enthusiastic about the modest mid-tempo sound and the charismatic voice, which is soft and sometimes harmless, rather untypical for Long Beach bands, and that's exactly the special trademark of Red Beret. I know, I got some of my friends excited with the band via their second compilation appearance on When Men Were Men... And Sheep Were Scared from 1985 and I can tell, these guys have an appealing taste. Should you be able to get hold of a record, you have to dig deep into your pocket, from € 50,- upwards it starts, a hell of a lot and certainly worth buying. Anyway, I'll stick with it, a fucking hot record!!!

THE ZIPPERS - A Six Song Mini Album 1981

Los Angeles based four piece pop band The Zippers consisted of Bob (vocals & lead guitar), Lewis (guitars), Danielle (bass) and Malcolm (drums), and were active from the late seventies to early eighties. In this short lifespan they released a 7Inch and this little six song mini-album on Rhino Records. Well, to be honest, I can't do much with this record, no groovy powerpop, no punk roots and no real highlights in their music. A babbling, monotonous, unspectacular interaction is all I can feel. Sorry, not my cup of tea. But I don't want to withhold another opinion from you and I'm sure some of you like the sound: "Although once strictly a tough club band, the tracks here expose a mature, musical quartet with songs and skills aplenty; the mood runs hot and cold. A neat record, but deduct points for swiping the Small Faces’ 'What’cha Gonna Do About It' for an ORIGINAL, 'I’m In Love' (Ira Robbins)."

THE DIESE HERREN - Hunger! 12" 1982

Obscure four piece from Hagen and Hunger! is their only vinyl appearance, released in a limited edition of 500 copies on Tonträger 58 Hagen, and the band consisted of Frank (vocals), Günter (guitars), Detlef (bass), Peter (drums). Besides this 12Inch, the band had a couple of compilation invitations, and I mean "a couple". Musically enjoyable five entertaining numbers which doesn't necessarily contribute to global warming, but if you want to create a podcast with early rare German contemporaries, you should listen to the Herren and make use of it. Interesting slab in any case and now I'm going to have a five-course meal for breakfast & don't be jealous, friends. 🍠

V/A - Rock Anti Mili 1988

Another great compilation, originally released as tape to support any facilities, occupied houses, etc... and finally reissued, and for the first time on vinyl, by El Lokal six years ago, motto: Rock Anti Mili! Not difficult to guess what the twenty-one, partly well-known, bands want and I think it's still a hot topic today, because who needs fucking orders, uniforms & armys? Little fat ugly types who can't satisfy their woman/man and don't know what "LIFE" means, types with massive inferiority complexes, unscrupulous industrial bastards, blah blah blah... I can name a lot more assholes, but let's leave that, the inculcation of such benefits has been substantially pioneered and influenced by our subculture; beautiful noises spread out from this record and I love the aggressiveness of Spanish bands and this wonderful slab has enough of them. Comes with lyric-sheet and cool artwork. ENJOY!!
