PINKOES - Into The Red EP 1979

OK folks, I'm back in the game and the following EP is the first vinyl rip in a good ½ year and I want to know if the shit works sound-wise and therefore I want to know from you if the rip is good or not. And it would be really helpful if you put your lazy ass up and leave your opinion on the sound. The Pinkoes was a short-lived three piece from London and consiste of Ted (vocals/guitars), Eric (bass), Peter (drums) and this is their lone piece on Popular Music with three amazingly good songs and I took note of the slab via Nolti's broadcast from 23/01/2023, which by the way is a must for any early UK Punk maniac, and I liked this song so much that I looked out for the record and could buy it cheap. Can't say more about the band but that's in this case not important, because their music is so fucking catchy and superb with two mid-tempo shots on the a-side and a dizzy gloomy flip about Mr.Smith, TOP!

CONDEMNED 84 - Live & Loud!! 1989

We start the weekend with a decent record from the Live And Loud!! series by Link Records and today we listen to Condemned 84, a British Oi! band from Ipswich, and their stuff was recorded on Oct 29th 1988 at Porter House/Retford and the team consisted of Kev (vocals), Mark (guitars), Gunk (bass) & Cliff (drums). Solid selection of twelve songs from their early era in the typical Streetpunk sound which smile at every Oi! friend. Interesting also the nice comp The Boots Go Marching In which you shouldn't miss. - Maybe a word about the requests, it's my turn and also ripping vinyl will continue soon, I'm a bit scattered & unmotivated. Egal, enjoy the music!

Keep The Faith/Teenage Slag/Face The Aggression/Young Blood/Strenght To Strength/The Nutter/The Boots Go Marching In/Oi! Ain't Dead/Under Her Thumb/We Will Never Die/Skinhead/Wonderful World

THE SKEPITX & THE INSANE - Split 7'' 1984

Nice split 7Inch on White Rose Records with two well-known acts from England. I don't think, I have to babble unnecessary words here, both bands are guests for tea & biscuits from time to time in my madhouse and therefore a lot of infos can be read and this little review follows now: "A good double-billed 7″. The Insane from Wigan offer a mid-tempo number with a wall of guitars and a great singalong chorus; Stoke On Trent's Skeptix cut alternates between slow-building parts and thrash. Worthy material and hot production make this a winner." (Jeff Bale, MRR #12 • March 1984) - And with that, you're dismissed for today 😑

THE FRENCH - The Model 7'' 1981

First 7Inch on Sanguine Records by this five piece which consisted of William (vocals), Graham (guitars), Ian (bass), Pat (keys), Phil (drums) and what the gentlemen have recorded here can definitely be heard. Minimal synthpop grooves that features on the A-side the Kraftwerk classic in a cute version, while the flip has a little more steam in its blood and sounds very wavie. To that a deep voice and the whole thing is done. The following year their second and final 7inch The River Flows East came out, but this sucker doesn't turn me on that much, especially the B-side is disappointing. Anyway, I should mention their only compilation appearance on !!?!...A Taster from 1982 and I guess, the French became history in this year. I wish you a good start into the new week and stay tuned!

THE SAME - Movements 7'' 1980

Somehow this is the mod month in this blog and I can't tell you why but the next goodie is the only 7Inch by this Mod-revival band from Worthing and this is the French version of the record which came there via Blueprint Records. The Same consisted of Steve (vocals/guitars), Brian (guitars), Peter (bass) and Tony (drums). Brian left early the band and the rest carried as three piece and recorded this great piece which was original released via Wessex Records in a limited edition of 1000 copies. The band had some compilation invites and in 2018 Detour Records released a CD totaling twenty three songs, to be mailed to me immediately.

NEW MODEL ARMY - No Rest For The Wicked 1985

Second album by New Model Army from Bradford and it is the band's first release on a major label and their last featuring bassist and founding member Stuart Morrow. Whilst having their roots in Punkrock, the band have always been difficult to categorise. Their fight against injustice, war or political grievances they make clear in their lyrics and they also skilfully translate them into melodic songs, and they've been doing it since 1980.

"Sacrificing the experimental Post-Punk doodling that worked so well within defined songs on the first LP Vengeance strangely enough works here for this incredible band that won't hear any malarkey about how bad second LPs are supposed to be. A more direct approach works wonders, rendering every song a possible single, every one a flaming, emotion-wracked foray into human thoughts, customs, and politics. And Justin got some unparalleled British lyrics for this kind of statement-oriented music and tremendous songwriting on side one. "There is no rest for the wicked ones," he sings, like a saddened preacher, a sentiment you see again on the terrific 'Drag It Down', like a guy standing at the edge of a pointless fray wondering why human beings are always so stupid. But he's also capable of great empathy for the times in England as they are in the 2010s, when so many young people are struggling economically, as 'Young, Gifted & Skint' makes clear. Don't miss 'Grandmother's Footsteps' & 'Ambition', too; you won't hear busier bass playing on a hotfoot U.K. Post-Punk record this year. The evidence here is that New Model Army are getting even better when you might have expected the usual decline, suggesting that Justin is an artist with great ideas you can't exhaust, and all three members have the talent to make it something other than regurgitation." (Jack Rabid)

Over the years, New Model Army have gathered a wide selection of fans, many of whom dedicatedly follow the band. Originally calling themselves "The Militia", after the song "Christian Militia", they later universally adopted the term "The Family" for their multi-generational and gendered group. - Great Record!

THE CURE - More Rarities 1979-1989

Well, this nice compilation I have made a few years ago and sheds light on the first ten years and the phases the Cure have traveled through. I joined the band at the time of their first records, where they recorded short, almost punky songs, changing to dark sounds with Faith and Pornography, but always reflecting my emotions and accompanying me until the early Nineties. The last interesting album for me is Wish and after the formation changed and I couldn't relate to the '96 album anymore. The Cure were an important band and left remarkable traces in the music world and the range of their songs creates room for interpretation and listening pleasure that definitely doesn't get boring and if a band manages to accompany me a long time of my life, it is exceptional and innovative enough to recommend its name to others. Got a bit of a sore throat and the beer tastes kinda weird but I want you to enjoy every single song on this compilation and I'm sure you'll find tracks you may not have heard of. Enjoy this sucker with a glass of wine and a kiss!

It's Not You/Winter/Faded Smiles aka I Don't Know/Play With Me/I'm A Cult Hero/Going Home Time/The Violin Song/A Normal Story/Throw Your Foot/All Mine (live)/Play For Today (live)/At Night (live)/A Forest (live)/Forever (live)/Push/Lime Time/A Night Like This/The Exploding Boy/Hey You!!! V/A - This Is Mod Vol.1 (Rarities 1979-1981)

Let's round off the small mod phase on wdthtc with the following compilation called This Is Mod, a small series by Anagram Records and a total of six CD's were created in the mid Nineties. The focus is on rare 7Inches, mostly by English bands, which only made it to this format and very sought nowadays. The British mod revival may have been a fad, driven by fashion and most of the time too derivative, but it did produce some cool singles. Musically they move in a decent PowerPop area with smart clothes and the artwork is also impressive, plenty of infos about each band. Consistently interesting and the last post for today, Bundesliga is waiting, Cheers!

1.Opening Up - THE CIRCLES
2.Billy - THE CIRCLES
3.Can We Go Dancing - THE AMBER SQUAD
4.You Should See What I Do To You In My Dreams - THE AMBER SQUAD
5.Can't Sleep At Night - THE CIGARETTES
6.It's The Only Way To Live - THE CIGARETTES
7.Choose You - DEAD BEATS
8.Julie's New Boyfriend - DEAD BEATS
9.On No - DEAD BEATS
10.Nobody Loves Me - THE LETTERS
11.Don't Want You Back - THE LETTERS
12.Happy Song - THE NIPS
13.Nobody To Love - THE NIPS
14.Saturday Night - THE ODDS
15.Not Another Love Song - THE ODDS
16.Circles - THE CIRCLES
17.Summer Nights - THE CIRCLES
18.They're Back Again - THE CIGARETTES
19.I've Forgot My Number - THE CIGARETTES
20.All I Want Is Your Money - THE CIGARETTES
21.I've Got Me Parka - THE SUSSED

TEENBEATS - Strength Of The Nation 7'' 1979

Formed 1979 in Hastings and the quintet consisted of Huggy (vocals), Ken & Paul (guitars), Eddie (bass), Dave (drums) and they signed to Safari Records and released two singles. Neither of the singles made the UK charts but I Can't Control Myself was a hit in Canada. Info: The Teenbeats were one of the better bands on Britain's late Seventies mod revival scene. Their timing was impeccable and making their debut just as the mod revival was gathering steam, they further stoked the fires with a killer cover of the Troggs' 60's hit "I Can't Control Myself", and followed this up with the even better "Strength Of A Nation". They had the attitude, the look, and the sound (recalling but never, ever mimicking the Who, the Troggs at all) but somehow never rated cutting a complete album, at least in the eyes of the record companies of that era, but their songs made it onto many a mod revival compilation, most recently Castle Records' 2003 Mod Revival Generation: Time For Action. They broke up around 1981, and are fairly well memorialized on the March of the Mods website. (Bruce Eder) - Good record in my opinion.

CRASS - Demo 1978 + The Peel Sessions 1979

This unofficial release came out in 2021 and feautures the demo recorded on February 27th 1978 & the Peel Sessions from March 28th 1979 by Crass, an English art collective and Punk band which formed in Epping, Essex 1977. They promoted anarchism as a political ideology, a way of life, and a resistance movement and were the brittlest and most hard-line radical of the first Punk wave, Crass issued a blitz of records that were ruthless in both their unrelenting sociopolitical screeds and their amelodic crash of noise. The line-up changed a bit over the years, but the group's mainstays were Steve (vocals), Eve & Joy (vocals), Penny (drums) and G. Sus, who did tape collages and provided the distinctively bleak black and white artwork on the fold-out posters that usually enclosed their LPs, were also important contributors. The Feeding Of The 5000 was their first album and for me, their best, with eighteen emotional statements and perhaps the most uncompromising early British Punk record (was in my collection and had to be sold at the time because of my ailing financial situation). Before disbanding in 1984, they made four albums and a few singles, mostly on their own label Crass Records, and are fondly remembered as an innovative and extreme band of the early Punk movement.

Uhhaaa... next round of the grandiose Powerpearls series, today with Volume #6 and you know what that means. Seventeen fresh PowerPop nuggets from all over the world have made it onto this Compilation and the selection is once again considerable and equipped with plenty of rare 7inches (one song per record). It's been a long time since I discovered this style of music with enthusiasm and since then I have had a number of Schnittchen as guests in my house and basically no more words are needed to review this rare record I think, do you agree? Let's do it like this, it's best to use the opportunity to leave your review/opinion in the comment section, that's what it's for and I'd be really interested in what you think about the material, and please, don't be shy. 😌 I say: this package is damn cool and a must have for any true wdthtc follower, Enjoy!

THE CIRCLES - Angry Voices 7'' 1980

Another band of the Mod movement are the Circles from the West Midlands and let me give you some great infos from discogs: Formed in May, 1979 by Mick (vocals/rhythm guitar), Tony (lead guitar/vocals), Glenn (bass/vocals) & Keith, former drummer with the new wave outfit the Neon Hearts. After circulating a few demos they released their debut single Opening Up on Graduate Records in November 1979. It reached #3 in the indie charts and over the years has achieved cult status. Like many of the mod revival bands of ‘79 the Circles never released an album and after another promising single on the Vertigo label Angry Voices (which went to sell some 20.000 copies) they decided to call it a day in late 1980. In 1985 Graduate released the track ‘Circles’ (not a Who cover) with a demo version of ‘Summer Nights’ as the b-side. The single went nowhere with no existing band to promote it. In 1999 the Circles reformed to play the 20th anniversary of the legendary Mods Mayday 79. Inspired by the fresh interest they have since continued to play live and also released a comeback single on Detour Records. Cool Stuff

LEATHERFACE - Fill Your Boots 1990

Gladly seen and always welcome in my house are my friends from Sunderland and first of all a sentence that I want to put to your heart and can only underline: "England's Leatherface are a rare treasure in contemporary music, a good old-fashioned Punk band who are neither near-sighted nor necrophiles." (Alex Ogg) And exactly these words will still be able to be said about the four in one hundred fucking years. Cherry Knowle from 1989 is the bands first full length and is considered to be a Hardcore masterpiece nowadays. The second followed a few months later on Roughneck Records and also there, all hallmarks are in place: "melodic and gruff, fast and abrasive, blunt and wistful." The recordings sound a bit more professional and mature and only eight tracks were taken for Boots (this file contains the CD version with four bonus farts, vinyl rip soon) but these are completely sufficient and fuck your brain in a catchy way. But that's not all folks, it gets even better because with their third album Mush they created one of the most intense Punk records of the nineties. Weekend's near and I pack my suitcase. Aloha!

NASTY MEDIA - Spiked Copy EP 1978

Obscure combo from Leeds which release one 7Inch via Lightning Records and they were active from 1977-1979 and it's not surprising that their single has disappered into insignificance because all four songs have the same monotonous rhythm, stomp through without much fuss and sound the same, unspectacular fits perfect here. But it's okay and one song even made it onto the Killed By Death #007 Compilation. About line-up or anything else I have no further infos, but one thing is sure, in a few hours and after more than three years of abstinence, I'm back in the stadium and enjoying the DFB Cup match between the SGE versus Darmstadt, that's going to be hot.... you can also watch it live on TV.

SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES - The Peel Sessions 1977-1978

One more great release is another John Peel session by Siouxsie & The Banshees and on this record are the first two recordings. Info: "At a time when no other record company on the planet would touch them, Siouxsie & The Banshees came very close to signing to the BBC's own label. At least, they would have if DJ John Peel had had his way. Absolutely entranced by the two sessions that the group recorded for his show during 1977-1978, and disgusted by the rest of the industry's fearful avoidance of the band, he tried his hardest to interest the Powers That Be in at least releasing a Banshees single drawn, if necessary, from one of the actual sessions. Of course the BBC passed and, while Polydor would eventually step in to give the band the chance they demanded, it would be another two decades before the sessions themselves finally made it out, across two EPs (compiled, in turn, onto an eight-track mini-album) that returned to Siouxsie & The Banshees' first recordings for the corporation and left fans still demanding the six sessions that followed over the next ten years. Historically, of course, these are all you really need, the sound of the Banshees refining their clatter from the early rent-a-punk stylings that marked out their first shows, to the dense, chiming clang that laid the groundwork for their monumental debut album, The Scream. Spikily enthralling, six of the eight songs featured on the two sessions, from December 1977 (first transmission) and February 1978, would appear on that album; one more, "Hong Kong Garden," would become the group's first hit single, and all are instantly recognizable from their radio incarnations. But there's also a wildness here that Steve Lillywhite's LP production purposefully suppressed, a jagged vein of excitement that reminds you that here is a band kicking against all the odds, watching while a horde of lesser talents landed record deals, but refusing to compromise an iota of their vision in the hopes of joining that queue. It is that, even more than the performances, that makes this such an intense, and intensely valuable document -- if you want to hear the Banshees at their best, after all, you simply put on The Scream. But if you want to hear them at their most defiant, walk this way." (Dave Thompson)

THE LURKERS - Freak Show 7'' 1977

Veterans of the London Punkscene are The Lurkers and this is their second 7Inch on Beggars Banquet. Part of the first wave of British bands to emerge in the mid Seventies, playing tough, meat-and-potatoes Rock & Roll with plenty of attitude and a jaundiced eye toward the world around them. This little dittie came out in October 1977, and by the time it was released, Arturo Bassick (vocals/bass) had left the band to form his own group, PinpointBut the band found an adequate replacement and since then they've been delighting us with their straight-forward music and their debut Fulham Fallout from 1978 is for me one of the best UK records ever. So friends, the shitty world of work is calling and a good start has been taken care of, may Monday pass quickly.

- Great Thx to Nolti -

THE IGNERENTS - Woodbines Tears & Jealousy 1997

Seventeen years later than planned, the British Ignerents released their first full length in 2017 on Rundown Records. Formed in Kent 1977, the bands only vinyl release to date was the Radio Interference 7Inch from 1979 and two songs at the First Offenders compilation. After drummer Stan died in a car accident in 1981, the band renamed themselves the Beekeepers and recorded another single. After the former bassist Chris died in 1994, the remaining band members decided to sift through and secure the band's musical legacy and with this fourteen song album, many unreleased, they carefully finished the selection and made it available to us freaks and the result is a powerful, dynamic selection of strong, energetic songs just the way I love them. And it's great to listen to. Limited to 600 pieces, so hurry up if you want a copy and in any case: perfect for the 3:00 pm beer, Cheers!

V/A - Labels Unlimited (The Second Record Collection) 1979

"Here we go then, just nipping round the corner into another decade and, in marked contrast to the more ludicrously large corporations, the small independant labels are healthier than ever." I'll quote David from the backcover and he was right, because underground music, i.e. Punkrock/New Wave, was emerging more and more and the majors sensed easy money (best example NDW). Formed in Great Malvern, Worcestershire in 1978, Cheery Red Records is one of the labels that at the time gave a number of very good young talented bands the opportunity to get their music noticed and spread beyond the local scene. This compilation is second one after the Business Unusual record with sixteen combos from Great Britain. Musically not fixed to a genre, but rather variably designed, partly equipped with a few songs that are rather uninteresting for me, but overall a decent mix which shows once again how creative and emotional the start of a new movement far away from the mainstream can be. If I compare that with today, where only junk is called music, this album is a masterpiece. Well, society just keeps getting stupider and they prove it to me every day. Enjoy the record and I'm looking forward to the Bundesliga ⚽ afterwards, Ja Ja Ja, here we go then!

1.Big Time - RUDI
2.Take It All Away - GIRLSCHOOL
3.Iggy Pop's Jacket - THOSE NAUGHTY LUMPS
4.Cold City - SPIZZOIL
5.N.C.B - LLYGOD FFYRNING
6.Hypocrite - NEWTOWN NEUROTICS
7.Holocaust - CRISIS
8.I Don't Want To Work For British Airways - SCISSOR FITS
9.Wot's For Lunch Mum? (Not B***s Again!) - THE SHAPES
10.Jilly - THE PIRANHAS
11.Pleasant Valley Sunday - STAA MARX
12.Who Killed Bruce Lee? - GLAXO BABIES

THE RUSSIANS - No Title 7'' 1980

Rain, rain and more rain! And I had to get out, damn shit! My unavoidable ToDo's are almost done and I treat myself to a short break and another rare & interesting record follows by a short lived four piece that was based in Northampton and the Russians only made one good record with two cool goodies on Laser. Formed in 1979 by Julie (vocals), Dusty (guitars), John B. (bass) & John (drums). They are non-political, a satirical statement & quickly disappeared. Info: "They chose the band name as an ironic statement on their deliberate apolitical stance, in direct contrast to many of their punk heroes. Julie felt her name was boring by contrast to the rest of the band who created a professional name by jokingly combining Rebel and witch to make the Sovietesque Rebel-o-witch-z. To promote the single, a custard pie fight was staged between Russians and Acme Punk Clothing outside the latter’s shop on the busy Wellingborough Road in Northampton bringing traffic to a standstill. The event made the front page of the local newspaper under the title Russian invasion starts a war. Unfortunately, the distributors refused to release the single and the band fought a long relentless battle and in the end had to settle for getting a few released for themselves, which they had to drive to London to get, so they could sell this small amount to their fans." Rarely at home on compilations but I can recommend you Smashed Again!!!, I chose the flip among many other rarities for this sucker.
