PARASITES - En Homage Aux Beatles EP 1991

The Parasites are a U.S. punk band and were from Livingston, New Jersey, and formed in 1985. The band has been releasing records since 1987. After breaking up in 1998 and again 2003, the band released a Best Of compilation in 2006, entitled Retro-Pop Remasters (Best Of) on Go Kart Records. A new lineup of the band is currently touring and will be releasing an album of new material in February 2009. This out of print record is a tribute to the Beatles on the twenty-fifth anniversary of their final American tour and kills every Beatles cover. Paperback Writer was the Beatles last number one hit before their concert retirement. Both Paperback Writer and I Feel Fine were performed at the final Beatles concert August 29th, 1966 at San Francisco's Candlestick Park. 3 classic tracks + one useless radio ad. Limited to 1466 numbered copies on clear vinyl. Great!!

THE PUNKLES - Punk! 2002

The Punkles were a band performing songs by the legendary and grandiose Beatles and of course, in their own style. The four were formed 1998 in Hamburg and were actually a side project of Prollhead. After a lot of playing gigs around Europe they toured together with Beatallica in October 2005 and in Spring 2006. Unlike Beatallica they performed the Beatles songs "as they are", singing the same lyrics and playing cover versions of the originals, just a "little" faster and with a punk spirit and every Beatles maniac, like me, will love this compilation of songs. The Punkles were quite successful on our continent and in Japan as well. They released five albums, one 7Inch Drive My Car and numerous sampler contributions. The band split up in 2006. "Part tribute, part tongue-in-cheek, the four don't just parody the Lennon/McCartney songbook, they breathe new life into it." - Released via Bitzcore and Punk! is their second one with sixteen classics. You love the Beatles - you love the Punkles! A perfect start on this sunny morning.

THE PUNKLES - Drive My Car EP 2002

Two years after their successful debut Hamburg based punkers The Punkles (with Prollhead!/Nixon Now! members) recorded their second album called simply Punk!. To act as an appetizer Fanboy Records released this three song EP with two non-album tracks and with 'Hold My Hand' (originally performed by The Rutles) is, I think, the only non Beatles track which has the band ever recorded. I'm sure a lot of punk bands started or already has a Beatles song rehearsed because they are big songs and easy to play. I remember a combo here from Frankfurt, called The Beagles and they were absolutly funny and crazy guys, especially live (Hello Freaks!) but sadly they never made it on vinyl. So, the Punkles took this in finest Ramones tradition and they are a great party live band! Part tribute, part tongue-in-cheek, the Punkles don't just parody the Lennon & McCartney songbook, they breathe new life into it. Splendid!!!!!!

STARSHOOTER - Get Baque 7'' 1978

Rare two-side-Killer from Starshooter, a French rock band made up of Kent Hutchinson (guitar & vocals), Jello (guitar), Mickey Snack (bass) and Phil Pressing (drums). Founded around 1975 in Lyon as the Scooters. In fact this title was registered after the first album under a pseudonym for simple contract issues. After a number of concerts (with the Damned or Jacques Higelin for example), the band signed with EMI. In 1977 the first record leaves in the tread: Pin-Up Blonde/What Crisis, Baby. One Year later the output of Get Baque, their second 45 laps a stir. It must be said that the version of the famous Beatles classic is fairly irreverent and thwarts their record company, which also owns the Beatles catalog in. So the 7inch was removed from sale after a week. Even though the record is an absolute must as you find out.

REVOLVER - Northern Songs 1979

For the next post I have to thank Bristolboy first, without him I would never have came to this cool band and their only album. His current post is the single from Revolver and this Liverpool four piece has recorded Lennon & McCartney compositions the Beatles never issued and for me as an absolute Beatles fan a damn MUST! Released via Rox Records are here seventeen extraordinary nuggets present, if they had been released by the four themselves, they would certainly have been for sure number one hits. Amazing what brilliant songwriting the two mastered and Revolver brilliantly and respectfully set a monument to them with their versions that sound almost like the originals. I didn't have to think long and got the original record and ripped it myself, because I want my own work. And as a little bonus, you'll find the Fabulous Four's debut work enclosed. This album is a real must and highlight of a musical hightime and unforgettable what the four triggered with their beat music in the early sixties and are still able to inspire. Awesome Stuff!

SLAUGHTER & THE DOGS - Beware Of... 2001

After a five-year break, this band has returned with a really impressive album, and I can say: the gentlemen haven't forgotten how to make music and have written twelve catchy Punkrock pieces, plus a grandiose Beatles cover, that underlines their potential and they don't got any quieter. Released via TKO Records with delicat Artwork and and partly in white vinyl. Info: formed during the initial onslaught of UK Punk in 1976, Manchester's Slaughter & The Dogs were one of the first group to release a single (the overlooked classic "Cranked Up Really High") on trailblazing hometown independent label Rabid Records. - A review: Slaughter & the Dogs were there at the beginning, but lacked the controversial flair of some contemporaries who got more ink or the talent that helped their other peers remain major influences decades later. They had a few classic songs ("Cranked up Really High" was the bands first single), but little else, and a longevity to match. Nostalgia brought key members Wayne Barrett and Mick Rossi, kind of a punkin' poor man's Tyler and Perry, back together in the '90s with a new rhythm section. Though this is the second release of all-new material from the stalwarts after several semi-official live releases, after 1999's Shocking it was the first to have a proper promotional push in the States. The band sounds like they're having fun, and Beware Of is pleasant enough, fondly recalling the days when punk incorporated glam influences proudly. But at the end of the day, it often just magnifies the aforementioned limitations of the group. The fact that the best song on here, "Hell In New York," was written in the glory days and only finally put down in the studio for this disc shows how hard it is to teach old dogs new tricks. V/A - Skloom Al Komul! 2021

Well, as you can see, my old schoolmate Teddy is more than happy with his new girlfriend and he asked me to put some of his favorite songs together and share them with you. Of course, I would like to comply his request, even if I hardly find time and my computer soon crackes off, I have taken the trouble to create the following compilation from the extensive repertoire of his hard drive and now finally present it as the ninth release on WDM RecordsHe chose a healthy mix of old and new classics and I am very satisfied with his selection. I'm responsible for the artwork, which I think is excellent, and all this together makes this little musical composition another highlight on this damn uninteresting Blog. Wherever you are now, enjoy the days off, make the most of it and always remember, You're Not Alone!

EXCEL - If It Rains 2011

June 1976, Stephen (drums) and Davis (keyboards) from Yorkshire formed a band called XL. The kid with the guitar, Stephen Smith, was eager to be noticed, so he become a further member and Paul was added to the equation and the band was complete. They knew five songs (covers of Beatles, Showaddywaddy) and played those over and over. After a year of solid gigging, the lads changed their name to Excel and replaced Paul with new axe man Richard. More gigs followed and they writing + performing more of their own songs. Excel founded their own label which was rare in the seventies. Founding member David leave because he was unhappy with the punky direction of the band. Alan enters the stage and in January 1979 they recorded their first 7Inch 'If It Rains' on their newly formed A.R.S.S. Records. Excel toured very much and at an amazing gig in London they sign a contract with Polydor and the second 7Inch 'What Went Wrong?' came out but it unfortunately failed to chart. Undaunted the band recorded a third 7Inch but it came to disputes within the band, arguments broke out which led to fights and it become almost impossible to continue with the recordings. Emergency meetings were held but singer/songwriter was asked to leave Excel. Hearing this, Polydor lost interest and the band were dropped at the end 1980. - The Japanese label 1977 Records, (known for re-releases of early punk/powerpop classics) released this brilliant compilation with fifteen killers, the debut + the second single and demos from their unreleased album. Enough for today, now I have to go to the Museumsuferfest, Cheers!

LIFE...BUT HOW TO LIVE IT? - Burn EP 1991

Life... But How to Live It? was a Norwegian punk band, formed in the summer of 1988 in Oslo. The members all frequented Blitz, a squatted building in the middle of Oslo, where many other notable Norwegian hardcore bands such as So Much Hate and Stengte Dører had their base in the late eighties. They split up in 1994, but played one concert in 2002 celebrating Blitz' 20th anniversary. This is their 2nd EP with three great punk tunes, female vox and the Beatles cover of "Norwegian Wood" is awesome. Enjoy!!!

TACONES - Difícil 7'' 1981

Interesting combo from Madrid, formed in the late 70's by Alberto Larios (vocals/guitar), Ramiro (guitar), Fernando (bass/keyboards), Carlos (drums) and this is their second 7Inch on Zafiro. Four young people, fascinated by the look of the swinging Mod scene in the UK and the catchy refrains of the new sound, founded the Tacones with pure beat premises, heavily influenced by veteran British beat bands with a long tradition such as the Kinks, Searchers or the Beatles. Dressed in impeccable suits, shirts and ties and gleaming pointy boots in the purest mod style that added visual appeal to their polished live shows. In March 1980, they released their first single, based on the soundtrack of the Juan José Porto film of the same name, Crónicas Del Bromuro/Rita (Chapa Discos), where they performed a cover version of the Los Brincos song 'Mejor'. They started playing gigs in small towns like El Tiemblo, in the Albacete bullring, and received extensive mostly positive reviews nationwide and got a bit better known. Prior to the long awaited album, Chapa released another single Difícil/ Rita Se Hizo De Oro in 1981 which earned good references, delivering an energetic, catchy and melodic songs that ranks among the best of their short discography.

At the end of the year, they switched from Chapa to parent label, multinational Zafiro, falling into the hands of then-flashy arrangers and producers and Requiem Final (1981) saw the light of day. The album's song of the same name was intended to pay homage to John Lennon, who was murdered the previous year. It was also released as a 12Inch in a limited edition for fans, complemented by the voice of the presenter Joaquín Luqui, who dedicated some warm words to the late ex-Beatle. But neither the critics nor the general public took notice of this work, which was soon to be found at bargain prices on the shelves of the big department stores.

Unabashed pop with plenty of good reviews, but the truth is that the band, with their well-crafted songs, their impasto voices and all their coherence, sadly went unnoticed, maybe because they foresaw the moment, maybe because their album lacked the ingredients for suspense . Whatever the case, the Tacones disbanded and disappeared forever in the fall of 1982 after releasing one final single, Te Mintio/Clin Clin (Zafiro), to little success.

V/A - Hilse 1979

The Hilse record was the first Finnish punk compilation and it really has all the important punk bands of the late 70's on it. A LP that everyone should have in your record collection. There are many simple reasons, the song 'Just Like Eddy, I Hate Teddy' from KOHU-63 is awesome, 'Ketään Ei Kiinnosta Mitään' by Pelle Miljoona 1980 is crazy & weird, the Beatles cover (Sensuuri), Briard & Ratsia tracks are killers etc. etc....all eighteen songs rock decently how we all like & know Finnish PunkRock (this is the CD version with eleven goodies from Hilse II). Enjoy!!!!

THE ROUSERS - A Treat Of New Beat 1980

A real masterpiece of PowerPop classic is the debut record by this combo. The Rousers from Broek op Langedijk (near under the smoke of Alkmaar) were one of the first Dutch New Wave bands. Inspired by the new momentum in the British pop music the band was founded on 19 September 1977 by the brothers Cock (vox + guitars) and Jan de Jong (drums), along with Rob Marienus (bass) and Theo van der Plas. In the beginning they play their own work and some covers. They played songs by The Beatles, The Damned, The Ramones and The Buzzcocks and this combination would determine the sound that the band develops and that they refer to themselves as New Beat. In January 1979 the Wieb (guitars) and Bonne Zigtema (vox) brothers join the band, Theo left. In the same year the first 7inch 'Magazine Girl' was released on Ariola/Torso and became a legend. Quickly they became celebrated, no wonder with their bright guitars, polyphonic harmonies and rhythmic clapping, the influence of the early beat music is clearly cognisable. Nevertheless, the band has a distinctly contemporary sound. After this record the band released all in all three singles and a second album called 'Touched'. 1981 the band broke up and split into The Thought and The Shavers. If you want more from the Rousers visit Frank's ShotgunSolution blog for the rest. By the way, the grandiose cover reminds me a little of Hergé. A Treat Of New Beat is truly one of the best albums I've heard this year.

- Many Thx to Fredrik -

RAMONES - @ The Palladium, NYC 7.1.1978

"Hey Ho Let's Go" - Yes, you know what comes... Yeah, the Ramones and I must tell you not much. In the World Wide Web there is sufficient information available. Like the Sex Pistols, the Ramones stands for punkrock of the first hour. Every punk has their records in the shelf, of course even me. Unlike the British with their snotty anarchic style the Ramones playing short, melodic, snotty 1-2-3-4 hymns and influenced a lot of bands. They were also different from the outfit; leather jackets, worn jeans, sneakers and long hairstyles (like the Beatles), almost in uni-look, the Ramones outfit was born. For me in addition to the Dead Kennedys the best band from the U.S. - This bootleg was recorded at the Palladium in New York City on January 7, 1978 in an amazing sound quality. Tommy Ramone is the drummer on this recording. He left the band soon afterwards, although he continued to work with them as a producer and manager, this is his last album as drummer. Hard to believe that all members are dead. I will listen to the Ramones till my death because this feelin' is etched in me. Have fun with this sound and "Gabba Gabba Hey" my true followers.

THE FEATURES - Floozie Of The Neighborhood 7'' 1979

This weekend I'm busy with lots of new music and look forward to a new WDM compilation soon but now a quick post of a brilliant 7Inch and the corresponding info from someone who knows how to review: "First as five piece founded as the Fingers in Pittsburgh early 1977, they packing up their instruments and professional aspirations and leaving two Fingers behind, three members (two of them brothers) headed to New York City in September of that year, and released their first EP Isolation on Paradox Records with three nice goodies and then they transformed into the Features. Take three Fingers, add the manager, and a wardrobe change and you have the Features whose Floozie Of The Neighborhood 7Inch is a pop-punk classic while the flip's a fantastic Beatles (I love their records) cover. Modern day punk throwbacks, the Stitches, cover "Floozie" in fine fashion. Considering the chances of finding the original are slim-to-none, vinyl hounds should seek out the No One Left To Blame compilation (coming soon) which includes "Isolation" or, for the less discerning and more desperate, the Features/Fingers album released on Italy's Rave-Up label in 2000." KUDDKRIG - Fly The Jolly Jumper & Fight Against The Law EP 1981

Here's a rare record by a band from Kristinehamn and this is their debut EP. The group did a single that was really rough. Two of the members of Skäms founded Kuddkrig and there is a drastic change that has occurred. Kuddkrig plays calm and melodic music and when I listen to this EP the first bands which came into my mind are the Doors & Beatles (well, somehow 60's style). The title track is a nice melodic song and the 3rd 'Stenstalidens Ögon' is a little different with piano and delicate swedish vocals. The other two songs are made to listen to it everyday, pretty charmin' and I would not say that this EP is a powerpop one, you know. The band could probably be really good just to find a little bit different and personal style for comparison to the other swedish punk pearls here. Believe me, this record melts every woman's heart.

PARASITES - Last Caress 7'' 1991

Well, there are songs which are predestined for cover versions and you really make nothing wrong with that and a perfect example is 'Last Caress' from the Misfits. Many bands use this goodie and I have not heard a bad one and the Parasites played a few (remember their En Homage Aux Beatles EP). Released via Shredder came this green sleeve version out in a total of 2845 copies on orange marbled vinyl. The flip is a demo of 'Fool For You'. Nice one!

FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS - Return To Roots EP 1988

Yokohama hardcore punx Fearless Vampire Killers were active since 1987 and this little dittie with four excellent tracks was released via Luv Records and I guess they drove the accelerator back a bit, catchy melodic songs in English including a fantastic Beatles cover, Come Together I think, at least that sounds like this and improve me if I'm wrong. Three album plus a few 7Inches were made and lots of compilation goodies, one of them the 病原体 - Virus Jap record, the other Go Ahead Make My Day - Smashing Odds Ness 2 slab. Thx to: Waka (vocals), Dirty Gill (guitars), Swad (bass), Knaoi (drums) - Listen!

DRAHDIWABERL - Lonely 7'' 1982

"It was always my goal to make Drahdiwaberl the most extreme and obscene band and I think we did that!" (Stefan Weber) - Drahdiwaberl is a politically oriented band, which was founded in Austria by singer Stefan Weber in 1969. The name is derived from the Viennese term for a roundabout. In the early years the band was in the first place a cover combo and interpreted music of bands like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and The Beatles in German. In the mid 70's they wrote their own songs. During this time, the first demo tapes were released. Their first official appearance was in 1972 at the University of Vienna. In 1978, Falco comes into the band. A year later they were on the amazing punk compilation Wiener Blutrausch on Schnazz-O-Phone/Tonau Records for which the band contributed three songs. A lot of gigs followed and the first records were released on GiG Records.

Musically Drahdiwaberl are difficult to classify. This is due, among other things, the ever-changing band line-up. Already in the first years their songs were distinguished by a high degree of individuality, although the band almost exclusively lectured cover versions of famous rock & roll pieces. Through the bizarre mixture of jazz and blues many cuts were barely recognizable. In the 70s, they devoted themselves with their political and aggressive lyrics to punk rock, instrumental during this time were deliberately distorted and poorly tuned guitars and the more restrained use of the drums. The left-leaning lyrics of the band related work across the years almost always to current political events, always with a touch of cynicism and black humor. Issues with which the band continues to set apart, include racism in Austria, the Red Army Faction (Baader-Meinhof Group), the FPÖ and George W. Bush. Drahdiwaberl was primarily known for their live performances.
Weber emphasized always wanting to do something for the public, so that it would entertain. So the band decided to accompany their performances with a flash show, often ended with home bans and sanctions by the organizer.

On this superb 7inch is with 'Lonely' a nice rockin' ballad and the flip is an interesting cover version of the 60s classic 'Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Honolulu Strandbikini'. Two cool tracks I like.

V/A - Happy Birthday Hans-Joachim! 2013

Today a further special compilation which I made for my Pa on his seventieth birthday seven years ago. Thirty-five rare Rock'n'Roller are gathered here and I can tell you, it was not easy to meet his taste because he had an extensive collection of first class stuff with recordings that were not published anywhere, that he recorded from the radio or from other sources and I also wanted to find songs like that. I think, I come very close to this with this compilation and he was thrilled and we had a good time with the CD. V/A - Bloodstains Across The World #3 2019

I don't know how surprised you were but when I saw this new Bloodstains compilation on ebay I didn't think long after, I gave my bid immediately & won the auction. Unfortunately not as vinyl but as lame unspectacular CD-R in an edition of 100 copies. Anyway, The tracklist is interesting and I know 40% of it whose originals can be found in the blog and the rest is fuckin' new. I would say, has become an excellent result, only drawback for the poor artwork, which is capable of development and must be better. But in the end, it is nice that someone makes the effort to keep this grandiose series alive. Enjoy!
