V/A - P.E.A.C.E. Compilation 2LP 1984

I don't think this excellent release in form of a double record set can be more topical, and as we all have to realize, mankind hasn't gotten any wiser even after almost forty years. There is always some aggressor somewhere who expresses its sick ideology with lies and blind helpers and it is appalling that no diplomacy, no system, and no sensible compromise can prevent a violent confrontationPathetic, disappointing & lifeless all the pursuit of power and heroism. About the record: "This massive international Hardcore/Punk compilation features fifty-five bands/songs and was organized and released by the infamous MDC on the band's own label R Radical Records. The worldwide hardcore scene was at its peak at this point, still underground enough to repel corrupting outside influences like major labels and heavy metal, but already hardened into a rigid aesthetic and political dogma that often encouraged groupthink and musical conformity. P.E.A.C.E. documents the state of "Reagan-era" Hardcore, just before the popularity of extreme music spread through decidedly non-radical camps and into the mainstream. Among the fifty-five bands on board are well-known plus the best tracks by courtesy of obscure groups of the local scenes from Argentina, South Africa to Japan. Most of the bands included retain, either through design or some bizarre quirk of ineptitude, a stamp of individuality on their sound that makes this an entertaining collection.

An extensive booklet insert is packed with political rants, cartoons, and suggestions for further reading, making explicit the double-LP's theme of activism and action against a corrupt authority. Plus, each band is provided with a full page to express their ideas (and plug their wares) with printed lyrics and crudely effective collage art. Reissued on CD in 1997 by New Red Archives with bonus cuts." (Fred Beldin) - A real highlight of an international gathering that shows how it can work.

UPRIGHT CITIZENS - Bombs Of Peace 1982

Not really new in Blogland but still a blast: the killer debut by Upright Citizens from the Ruhrpott, one of the first German punk combos with English lyrics. This little dittie was released 1982 and in 1985 they were the first German punk rock band to tour across the United Fuckin' States for six weeks. These years plus the early 1990s were the most successful in the twenty-two year history of the band. In addition to the release of various sound carriers, Upright Citizens earned the reputation of a terrific live act, which they also proved as “special guests” of punk greats that time. Bombs Of Peace was via H'art Musik released and line-up were Anton (vocals), Uli (guitars), Crocker (bass), Mario (drums) and is an absolute classic consisting of nine tracks that already swept everything away back then. A short review: "Nine songs from this German group, mostly sung in English and sounding very English, too (ca. ’79-’80). They even do a cover of Crisis’ “Holocaust.” The lyrics are great and the material is fine and dandy. An excellent debut!" (Tim Yohannan, MMR Nov/Dec. 1982) - I own their brilliant album "Open Eyes, Open Ears, Brains To Think And A Mouth To Speak!!!" from 1985 which contains some older songs new recorded and is one of the best records in this country. Also found on numerous most important compilations of the 80s, their music is still remarkably fresh and fantastic. A must-have for all lovers of good ole 80s hardcore punk!

THE DICKS - Peace? EP 1984

Long overdue the following combo from Texas, the Dicks which were formed 1980 in Austin by Gary (vocals), Glen (guitars), Buxf (bass), Pat (drums). The four are known for their confrontational stage presence (Floyd was an open homosexual who frequently appeared in drag on stage and had no qualms about getting in the face of close-minded audience members) and raucous music. They started writing burly, blues-drenched Punk anthems and began playing raucous, shows with local heroes the Big Boys. Unlike that band’s funk-infused, high-production value drag show, the Dicks opted for a cruder but still spectacular approach. Their first masterful single Dicks Hate The Police, released in 1980, brought them much attention and is now regarded as a classic and has rightly been republished in large numbers. This EP is unlike anything else before or after, a total powerhouse of a song. The flip found the band playing faster and harder than most other US combo at the time. Peace? is their second 7Inch on MDC Dave's Radical Records label with three great numbers. In 1983, the band relocated to San Francisco. However, Glen, Buxf, and Pat soon decided to return to Austin. Floyd carried on with the Dicks' name, recruiting new members Lynn (drums), Sebastian (bass) and Tim (guitar). This line-up released the second album (These People) before calling it quits in 1986. Floyd and Lynn went on to form Sister Double Happiness

The group disbanded in 1986, although occasional one-off reunion shows featuring the Austin lineup occurred through the 1980s & 1990s. In 2004, Dicks began playing regular reunion concerts in Austin and elsewhere. The line-up for the shows consists of the original Dicks, with the exception of Glen, who died sadly in 1997. A documentary film, The Dicks From Texas was released in 2015 about the band, Austin & the Texas Punk scene along with a tribute album with twenty-seven bands covering twenty-eight Dicks songs. The Dicks announced that their final show would be October 30, 2016 @ Grizzly Hall in Austin however due to popular demand, a second show was added the day afterward. That's it folks!

THE PROLETARIAT - Soma Holiday 1983

New stuff for me: The Proletariat, punx from Southeastern Massachusetts, whose heyday was during the 1980s, when they were active in the early Boston hardcore scene, sharing the bill with many of the best punk and hardcore punk acts of the time, despite their recorded output having a decidedly non-hardcore aesthetic; the Proletariat show more strongly the musical influences of early British post-punk bands such as The Jam, Buzzcocks and Gang Of Four in their fractured guitar sound. Tired of the pompous bands of the 70’s with their elaborate stage shows they gravitated towards sparse presentation, preferring to let the music and lyrics stand on their own. Between November 1981 and March 1982, they recorded material at Boston's Radiobeat Studios and brought a couple of songs as reels for airplay on local radio stations, the band gained national exposure via the excellent This Is Boston, Not L.A., a compilation of bands from the local scene released by Newbury Comics' Modern Method Records, a self-released limited seven song tape EP called 'Distortion' followed shortly thereafter. Four songs from this demo surfaced on vinyl along with fourteen more songs to comprise the band's first record 'Soma Holiday', Steven Blush, author of American Hardcore: A Tribal History said: "The Proletariat played offbeat post-Punk with Hardcore intensity and a radical twist. Frontman Richard Brown wrote oblique lyrics, part Ginsberg, part Mao.. 1983's Soma Holiday LP came off light years ahead of its time." In 1984, the band return to Radiobeat Studios to record another album and an early version of "An Uneasy Peace" brought the band international attention via its inclusion on the P.E.A.C.E. compilation from R Radical Records. Later that year, before their second album was completed, many line-up changes accelerated the end of the Proletariat and shortly after performing a pair of final shows on 1.July 1985 with Italian band Raw Power @ the Living Room rock club in Providence/Rhode Island, the band disbanded.

CHAOS GENERATION -s/t LP 1986

Now it's not hard to guess where I'm going this year and in four hours I'm in the plane so I leave you with this fantastic band and here is the full bio: In April 1982 in Athens, three friends: Thodoris (Drums), Nikos (Bass) and his cousin also Nikos (Guitar & Vocals) formed a band named Anti-Culture influenced by Punk/New Wave with political lyrics. In winter 1983 Nikos left the band. Then Costas (Guitar/Vocals) and Mars (Vocals) joined. The band renamed to Chaos Generation and became part of the early Punk scene in Athens.

On 7.4.1983 they gave a live performance @ Sofita Club in Plaka with Ex-Humans & in October they also performed live @ Anemoni Cinema in Agia Paraskeui with Adiexodo atthat time the changed their name to CHAOS GENERATION. Before the end of the year they released along with Adiexodo the split tape "Dead End & Chaos Generation Wish You Good Appetite!" In 1984 Nikos and Mars left the band, Akis (Bass & Vocals) and Dimitris (Vocals) accordingly took their place. In Spring they got singed by Enigma Records and in July they recorded two tracks and participated to the first Greek Punk compilation, the legendary: "Disturbing The Peace" 1985 they performed a live @ Chevrolet Pub in Ioannina and in the same year with Adiexodo @ Anesis Cinema in Agrinio, the second live was recorded and distributed hand to hand through bands friends, as split tape titled "Chaos Generation & Dead End Wish You Happy Easter!"

In the early 1986 Dimitris leave the band and ?ikos became front-man of the band, it was then when they signed a one year contract with the label Right Way witch later renamed to DiDi Music, by the summer they released the self-titled debut album but the 1st press was shortly removed from the market due to bad sound an replased by a 2nd press. By autumn Akis leave the band to play bass for Parkinson Square in France, Dimitris and Alexis came in and bring new influences, the second guitar gave more volume to the audible outcome, their style went off the Punk clichés with more poetic lyrics referring to inner search of human political stance. In June 22nd they played live with Moot Point, Grover and Out Of Control @ Theatro Dasous/Thessaloniki and in November they supported The Ex & The Shrubs from Holland @ the Club 22 Autokinisi/Athens.

In winter 1987 Theodore (Drums), Alexis (Bass), Dimitris (Guitar/Vocals), Costas (Guitar/Vocals) started recording new material and in February 1988 they supported for two live shows The EX @ the Rodon Club in Athens, and finally on Feb 20th their last live performance @ 127 db Club/Eksarxeia. By the end of Februray 1989 their second and last album Requiem was released by DiDi Music and then they broke up the same year! They performed many live gigs all over Greece, drawing alternative & anti-government audiences.

The words of the front cover is written by Akis: Thirteen Days, Thirteen Nights, and Colors Become Long-Departed Figures. Out of sight, tears flowed, and cold stones built a house with no windows, a home for the mind's lonely dance. Why should I care about the winter outside of my home? But someone freezes outside my door. And I kill him all the time, cut it, cut it. But he smiles at me, shows me a fire, invites me to go with them and dance with them.....

Enjoy the music and stay decent!

V/A - Powerpearls Vol.4 1999

You certainly weren't waiting for this compi, because it's no longer a rarity in Blogland, but I almost forgot that I have a few of my own rips from this great Powerpearls series, which I wouldn't want to withhold from you. Part IV is again full with rarities of the years 1977-1981 from around planet earth and as always, the bar is set decently high because the originals are as rare as snow in July (North & South Pole area not considered). What should I write next? It's great, that are people who probably have enormous costs associated with such projects and share their collection with us mortal music freaks and therefore have the will and consistency to implement this, pull it through and let us be part of this undiscovered music & bands. I take my hat off and I share a beer or two with those, cheers! Song selection is superb and I'm going off to the weekend and look what comes next.

GASTUNK - Under The Sun 1987

Slabs from Japan are mostly noisy chaotic spectacle but it goes also different. The proof is the second album by Gastunk. Eight melodic songs with a length of more than five minutes and a slight metal touch have the four banned on vinyl which are absolutely worth listening to and really surprised me and therefore definitely worth a post. A bit info: Gastunk is an influential Japanese rock band, first active from 1983 to 1988. They reunited in January 1999 for a concert at Akasaka Blitz called Rest in Peace in memory of hide, who died the previous year. It was recorded and released as a live album in November. They performed again in 2006, before officially restarting activities in 2010. Initially a hardcore punk band, guitarist Tatsu later recalled that when Gastunk made their major label debut they were dubbed heavy metal by the media. Represented on some compilations, A Farewell To Arms from 1986 for example. Today a hot day again and I hope you spend it on the beach or anywhere with lots of water!

PUBLIC TOYS - Safety-Pins On Television EP 1998

Public Toys was founded in Düsseldorf 1991 by Fossi (vocals), Uwe & Guido (guitars), Roman (bass), Usenburger (drums) and they convey a whole attitude towards life that was long thought to be extinct. At the beginning of the 90s, a couple of guys from Düsseldorf get together and want to play punk. You'd heard it somewhere before - that's why various newspapers at the time associated: “The grandchildren of the Toten Hosen are now inheriting their inheritance!” But they go their own way and create their own style. "Punkrock has no idols!" and the Public Toys are certainly not a band that could be described as a copy of some punk greats. At the end of 1997 singer Fossi left the band and Pascal joined them as new singer, who from then on wrote many lyrics for the band. All in all, they have enriched the nineties with their refreshing sound and the result are three albums and a few singles (I don't even want to talk about the numerous compilation contributions). This little dittie was released through Pascal’s own label Dirty Faces and transports four catchy numbers in your house and give you peace. An Opinion: "The Public Toys are the last and only true punk heroes. So sweet that the girls lie to their feet, hard enough to hit it off with the punk scene and smart enough to write controversial lyrics that when brought together with the right music are so melodious that you don't want to withhold it from anyone..." (BUT Fanzine). Can stay like this.

DECLINO - Terra Bruciata 2LP 2017

I thought, I had already posted something from this great band, but even after checking it three times, I didn't find anything except a few compilationsWell, it's time to change that today, and the best way I can do that with a fucking great release by F.O.A.D. Records. We're talking about Declino, a four piece based in Turin, active between 1982 and 1985, and they were one of the most influential Hardcore/Punk bands in Italy. Members were Sandro (vocals), "Mungo V.R." Bertotti (guitars), Max Occhiena (guitars on A1 to A9), Silvio (bass), Orlando (drums on A1 to A6), Roberto (drums). They were featured in early MRR reports on the Italian Punk/HC scene and were also featured on the essential P.E.A.C.E. double LP compilation on Radical Records! Their style was a very energetic clash of speed, rage & creative songwriting. They were definitely the first in their area to develop a mature style that leaned more towards the intensity of full-on Hardcore than the rawness of Punk.

So this essentiell Anthology (limited to 550 copies on black, 150 copies on ultra clear vinyl) includes all their existing studio recordings, consisting of: the debut EP (1983), Mucchio Selvaggio split tape/LP with Negazione (1984), three unreleased tracks (1984), Eresia 12″ (1985) and a complete soundboard live recording (Denmark 1985) never released before in its entirety. I know all you maniacs of angry and raw energy will love this double album, and all you others as well.

LOS VIOLADORES - s/t LP 1983

Fantastic debut album by this legendary punk band from Argentina, Los Violadores. They deserve the full description which I lending from the essential kfth page: Despite its demographic size and socio–cultural importance in Latin America, and unlike Brazil, Mexico or Colombia, Argentina didn't produce many first rate hardcore and punk bands during the 80's. But still, Los Violadores are probably among the pioneers of Punk Rock in the area. Guitarist Hari B. formed Los Testiculos in Buenos Aires in 1978, while the military dictatorship (who ruled the country between 1976 – 1983) was at the peak of their power. The regime, that in a couple of years murdered more then 30.000 left wing activists (or that were suspected to be so), saw any act of non–conformity as potentially subversive, so obviously the first generation of Argentinian punks was very much underground. But they still managed to survive.

In 1980, Hari B., together with drummer Gramatica, changed their name to Los Violadores. Due to censorship, they were unable to publicly use the new "offensive" name for a while, so they ommitted just one letter and remained "Los Voladores" for the early show fliers. About a year later, they were joined by vocalist Pil Trafa and bassist Stuka. After one of the first shows with this line up, about 200 hundred persons were arrested and the band members were charged with "political disturbance", thus gaining public notoriety and making it clear that Punk was alive in Argentina. As they put it "We wanted to make something that was punk but still rooted in our reality. We didn't want to be part of the complacent Argentinian rock scene, which was silent during the dictatorship and thus partner for the atrocities". They were one of the few bands which refused to take part in a huge rock concert sponsored by the military dictatorship as part of the Falkland/ Malvinas war propaganda campaign, even though they were surprisingly invited to participate. Ironically, many of those who did appear there were actually self professed hippies, who probably saw punk as something "violent & fascistic". Los Violadores pointed at that hypocritical "hippy ideology" as their second main enemy after the military regime.

Also in 1982 they recorded their first (self titled) LP, which could only hit the streets in late 1983, after democratic elections took place. It was released by the Argentinian independent label Umbral and it includes 12 great tracks with excellent production. Unlike the raw, thrashy hardcore produced in neighboring Brazil, Los Violadores are more '77 influenced, althought with an updated sound, kinda like Generation X meets DOA.

After the return of democracy, Hari B, who thought that the main reason of existance for the band was to fight the dictators hip, quit. He played for a short time with Argentinian's Oi! pioneers Comando Suicida, long before they became full-fledged boneheads. In 1984, Los Violadores were asked to contribute a track for the now legendary P.E.A.C.E. compilation, being the sole representatives of Latin American punk among the 40+ other bands and maybe making a small name for themselves in the international punk community. In fact, Argentinian rock magazines reported that there was lots of interest in the band from Europe and that they sold thousands of copies in the "old world", but that seems pretty unlikely.

By then, they were already changing direction towards a more commercial one, something typical for many bands from the era. Their second mini album Y Ahora Que Pasa Eh? is definately more rock/pop influenced, but in my opinion still enjoyable. They kept playing until the early 90's and even after that, they reformed several times, but their output is totally irrelevant to these pages. Their old material was reissued on CD by the major they had signed with, but their first LP was bootlegged on vinyl a couple of years ago. (source: killfromtheheart)

BOTS - Aufstehn 1980

Now I present you my only Hippie record that I still own and do you know that too? You love a record at young age, then a change of life follows, you sort out your records, put the old stuff back and memories stop you from giving away the slab, so I feel with Aufstehn. When I think about how many times we have roared 'Sieben Tage Lang' I still get goose bumps today. Bots is folk rock group from the southern city of Eindhoven and were successful in the Netherlands and Germany, formed in 1974 by Hans Sanders and they initially published only songs in Dutch. The lyrics were predominantly political, socially critical, cynical and influenced by the peace movement of the seventies. After appearing at the festival Rock Gegen Rechts in Frankfurt/Main in June 1979 they received an offer to recorded their songs in German, well-known writers like Wolf Biermann, Dieter Hildebrandt, Hanns Dieter Hüsch, Hannes Wader and Günter Wallraff helped with the translations. In addition, the band were a few times guest in the GDR, first time 1976 for the Festival of the Political Song in East Berlin, where the group dedicated the song Sieben Tage Lang to poet Wolf Biermann, at the time for ten years a performance ban, last at the largest Open Air Festival of the GDR on 19 June 1988 on the Radrennbahn Weißensee in East Berlin. After the decline in popularity and the release of the Dutch album Paradijs in 1990, the members of the group retired to private life. Great songs are: Nichtsnutz, Der Mann & Krüppel. On 3 November 2007 Hans died at the age of 61.

OFF! @ Annandale Hotel/Sydney 2013

Let's spend some fuckin' great US Hardcore with this delicacy. Black Flag, Circle Jerks, OFF! The stations of frontman Mr. Keith Morris, the one with the best punk voice and as Jello Biafra, one of the pillars of american punkrock. I have all the records from his old bands and with OFF! he kicks another excellent example out what's inside him and I think the songs give us all a strong impression of living in the U.S.A., the land of the free. This bootleg is a highlight of 29 energtic songs in a brilliant quality with nice greetings to the audience and the band is hot. You can really feel the gig and I like every minute of this 30 minute H-bomb. In 2011 we had the chance to visit a concert in Wiesbaden and we both were just thrilled. I can really recommend anyone to join a OFF! concert, you will never forget it. OFF! are Keith Morris (vox), Dimitri Coats (guitar), Steven Shane McDonald (bass), Mario Rubalcaba (drums).

WRETCHED - In Nome Del Loro Potere Tutto E' Stato Fatto EP 1983

Wretched was a hardcore punk band from Milan. Along with other bands such as Indigesti, they formed the basis of the hardcore scene in Italy during the 1980s. Their music was usually fast-paced with violent and dark lyrics. The original line-up were Gianmario (vocals), Gigi (guitars), Fabio (bass) and Giancarlo (drums), these four debuted 1982 on the split EP with Indigesti. Although they originally sang in English but soon switched to their native Italian, finding it better suited to expressing their radical political message. The band took strong anti-war and pro-anarchist stands through their lyrics and imagery. They also self-released all of their records on a label that came to be known as Chaos Productions. The band lived at the infamous Milano squat Virus, which played host to many hardcore shows in the early-mid '80's. Wretched lived and breathed the DIY spirit of rebellion that they advocated in their music.

The band recorded their first EP before switching guitar players and drummers in 1984. Daniele (guitar) and Crema (drums) played on the third, Finira Mai?, and the full length. Appearances on BCT tapes comps and the international P.E.A.C.E. compilation spread the word of "Chaos Non Musica" to everywhere punk was being played. Zambo took over drums in 1985, and the band began its shift into more heavy metal territory. They recorded one more LP and a 7Inch before internal problems (including Mario's shredded vocal cords) and line-up changes forced them to call it quits. Before melting down, they played the last show at Virus with Antisect. Unfortunately, Wretched's strong commitment to doing it themselves meant that their records have always been hard to get outside of Italy. An official discography (mysteriously missing the first EP) came out some time in the mid 1990s, and the Furious Years of Italian Hardcore compilations fills in the hole. MARGINAL MAN - Identity 1984

Soon the Champions League is on T.V. but before, I wanna bring you closer to this brilliant record. Identity is the first release by Marginal Man from Washington, via Dischord, and they were founded by three members, Steve (vocals), Pete (guitars) and Mike (drums), of the recently defunct Artificial Peace. Andre (bass) and Kenny (guitars) completed 1983 the band. Marginal Man was one of the first DC hardcore bands to feature a two-guitar attack, as the original hardcore band member set-up featured a single guitar player. The band played together for five years and recorded this 12'' and two albums. They play a decent mid-tempo sound with really good emotional lyrics. I think my first touch with the band came with the very good Going Nowhere Slow compilation on Double A Records and 'Friend' is a first class song, since then I like the guys. On this slab are nine catchy outstanding goodies, lyric sheet enclosed and now soccer. - ENJOY!!

V/A - Pusmort View 1991

That the Japanese love extreme rough fast hardcore prove the numerous bands whose plates are hard to get in Europe, I guess the other way around it is the same. So it is not surprising that a Japanese label, Toy's Factory, got down to work and focused on Pusmort Records, Pushead's label, and put out this great compilation with bands of it. I had numerous records because this sound hit exactly my taste, today I have only one left. Annoys me really, but the times were different and I had to sell a lot because I needed money. Well, in the end it doesn't matter, I'm sure they're in good hands. Enough blah blah, be ready for the unattainable hardcore blasts of the 80's.
