MÄDELS NO MÄDELS - Take That! EP 1998

By popular demand, finally Punk from Sindelfingen by Mädels No Mädels who have been celebrating their cutting '77 style dance music since 1989. Originally founded as Heavy Mädels they released their first EP under this name on FAE Musik. This was followed by the renaming to Mädels No Mädels and since then several singles and three albums have been born. They haven't all the qualities of a successful band, that doesn't let anything or anyone get in the way. Unmistakable Punkrock that always sounds crisp like fresh from the baker. In this file you find their fourth EP plus the legendary 333 x Up & Down 7Inch from 1992, both released via the great Incognito Records label. Sound 'Made In Germany' that roars, sweaty concert-goers, 99% humidity and snapped guitar strings are trademarks for a typical Mädels No Mädels gig. It's no exaggeration to say that the band brings fun into your life with their refreshing, carefree music that takes you back to life and leaves everyday life where it belongs. Also represented on numerous CompisMusicians on these two singles are Oli (vocals/guitar), Johnny (guitars), Jenz (bass) and Hari (drums) and their debut Doggie Style comes soon. Until then, let yourself be intoxicated by their driving music, buy their records (if available) and enjoy spring. Cheers!

THE PROLES - Kings Road Punks EP 1990

Fast vinyl rip in between and welcome to rare tracks by this London based Punx called the Proles, and all songs on this EP were recorded April 1979 and are previously unreleased. Staged by Incognito Records and the insert is wrong in my opinion because this release is INC 011 and on the bio says 009. Ultimately it doesn't matter, perfection is for others. Fact is the Proles; Terry Fied (vocals), The Avenger (guitars), Eddie Bull (bass) & The Incredible Fart (drums), recorded a demo in the late seventies and Barny dug them up and put three on this EP. Glorious minimalistic shots the way I love them and definitely worth listening to. The band split up after a last concert as a trio in the fall of 1979. Great Stuff!

DIE SCHWARZEN SCHAFE - Julia + 2 EP 1988-1989

Slowly becoming more pleasant again and there are still two days until the weekend for me, these are good prospects. Today a small 7Inch package from Düsseldorf by Die Schwarzen Schafe and offered are the Reagan On Speed ('88), Julia & Wir Haben Noch Lange Nicht Genug! ('89) singles. I bought the singles at a concert by Barny, Incognito Records, in Hamburg/Marquee at the end of the eighties (good times those were)Since 1985 they make finest D.I.Y. Punkrock and the current line-up consists of Armin (vocals), Volker (guitars), Hendrik (bass) & Warze (drums). Many, many gigs have taken the band all over Europe. From the small AZ to the big festival stage, everything was there. It was never about the big career, but about the scene, and that's still the case today. The sheep sing about the beautiful, but also about the bitter sides of life and wrap these lyrics in mid-tempo punk rock with lots of melody and a sing-along factor (oh-ho-hooo everyone can!). The band positions itself and doesn't like gray areas, fascists, sexists and homophobic idiots. The gentlemen shine with eleven '77 style numbers with unconventional, very personal German & English lyrics, appealing.

V/A - Break The Rules #7 1996

So that are no gaps here, now the missing piece of the puzzle of the essential compilation series from Incognito/Insekten Records headquarters: Back To Front; Means many rare unsung heroes who created fantastic music & colorful subcultures in the early wild years 1977-1982 worldwide and vehement flouted the dusty degenerate biblehousesocietynorms. Twenty-three brilliant examples prove once again that the music is different and the spirit is more alive than today. Mostly good stuff on this Volume and 1000 copies exist.

THE SECT - This Side Of Summer EP 1992

Pretty three piece EP from the 333 x Up & Down series which was created in the Nineties by the legendary Incognito Records label and each release is limited to 333 copies. And Barny, the founder, was guest at Nolti's New Rose on Nikolaus last year and chatted about the early days, his publications, experiences, re-releases, mp3's and more nice anecdotes in a relaxed atmosphere and it's really fun to listen to both. Very interesting for me because I had the pleasure of getting to know him in the Hamburger Marquee when Broken Toys was on tour with the Schwarzen Schafe and I was doing civil service in Lüneburg at the time. I was even able to visit the tour a second time, in Oberursel. It was all in the early nineties and I also bought a few singles from him. - The Sect was a melodic Punk combo with an edge done the old way from the West Midlands and consisted of Kevin (vocals), Terry & kevin (guitars), Kevin P. (bass), John (drums) and were active from 1986 - 1992 and released two albums (listen) and a couple of 7Inches and they playing catchy powerful solid melodic songs in the vein of GNW or HDQ and didn't get unfortunately a lot of attention and stayed more in the underground and only a must for die-hard fans. Do yourself a favour and choose this one and enjoy their awesome sound.

THE DOUBT - Contrast Disorder EP 1980

On this rainy Saturday music is announced and before I rip vinyl a quick post by another band from Ireland with their only record that was only pressed 500 times, but was re-released by Incognito Records as Incognito Punkrock Classix Series 2015, also 500 copies. Info: formed in Bangor around 1978 by Hugh (vocals), Paul (guitar), John (bass), Steven (drums) and their main inspiration came from an earlier Bangor band called the Standards. After a few months John Clarke was replaced on bass by Robert Scott from recently disbanded Bangor outfit The Ski's. Over the next year The Doubt played as many gigs as they could. Arguably, their best show ever was a charity gig arranged by the band which also featured slots by Fifth Column and Belfast bands Ruefrex and The Androids. For the first (and last) time the Doubt had use of a proper PA and played a storming set to a crowd of several hundred. The band split in October 1979 despite having discussed releasing a single. As the principal songwriters, Corken and Scott decided to go ahead with the release of an EP and roped in Adrian Maddox (Fifth Column’s guitar player) to play drums on the recording while Corken took over vocal duties. Contrast Disorder was eventually released on Solo Records in early 1980 after numerous delays and sold a couple of hundred copies locally. It featured four brilliant tracks. In 2003, Rave Up Records released a compilation which featured the four songs of the EP plus ten unreleased demo sessions. When the Doubt split Steven and Hugh went on to play in the Co-Ordinates whilst Scott and Maddox formed Palace Of Variety. Later, Scott would form Carpenter JoeRepresented on relevant compilations, for example Bloodstains Across Northern Ireland I recommend for you.

ROCKS - Combat Zone 1994

Only album by Rocks on Kangaroo Records and it took a long time for the band to become active again. In 1978 they brought their legendary You'r So Boring EP on Point Blank Records (500 copies) out and and set with that an astonishing exclamation point, 1995 re-issued as CD with bonus tracksI first came in contact with them through Tepid Spit Artists, an unofficial tape compilation what I acquired from Incognito Records. Short basics: "Rocks, please, never put a “The” in front, were Sydney based Punx which started its life as a three piece in 1976 with childhood friends Bill Webb (a.k.a. Bill Posters) Drums/Lead Vocals, Peter Davie Guitar/Vocals and Steve Vanderschoot Bass/Lead Vocals. Having jammed together after school and on weekends and with their love for early 70’s rock surging through their veins, it was no surprise they would turn to Punk as they forged ahead finding a style to become a band. When bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols came along, it was obvious what they had become and they would go on to be one of Sydney’s best loved Punkrock bands..." Combat Zone is twenty-two times fresh sound combined with catchy melodies. Rocks are still active and occur at irregular intervals here and there somewhere. Enjoy the album & the warm rays of the sun with a cold beer.

THE SPY'S - Original Punk Rock From Canada 1979-1980

Damn cool release by Incognito Records and we meet the Spy's from Windsor/Ontario which only made an EP in 1980 and this is one of those records with lost recordings that a stubborn lover discoveredInfo found: The whole of the American Midwest, including Detroit, was a bit slow to latch onto punk. By 1979, though, a handful of bars there, like Lili's 21 in Hamtramck, the New Miami in the seedy Cass Corridor neighbourhood and the legendary Bookies up in the equally menacing north side, were showing local and visiting acts at least a few nights each week. And for a couple of teenagers from Windsor just across the river, that was all that was needed to start up a band like The Spy's. As singer Frank Carlone remembers it, "Elad (D'Amore) and I were at the New Miami to see Fred 'Sonic' Smith, and somehow Elad had managed to chat with him between sets. So later in the next set, he calls Elad up to the stage to jam with him, and for two guys who grew up listening to the Stooges and the MC5 this was amazing. Anyway, I think it was during 'Sweet Little Sixteen', Sonic gives him the nod, and Elad does this amazing solo, and I knew we had to start a band or something!"

Carlone and D'Amore's musical partnership goes back even farther. "Way back in '73 up to around '75, a bunch of us east-siders would hold these sort of informal battle of the bands in various basements - we called it 'Cockstock' - constantly trying to outdo each other. One time Elad and his brother, Domenic, filled these containers with gasoline," he laughs, "hoping to have these Kiss-style firebombs and, poooof!, we just about burned the house down!" After witnessing the Dry Heaves score a surprise second-place finish at a real Battle of the Bands, this time in 1979 at Ojibway Park, the pair got serious, coaxing bassist 'Coma' Joe Desrameaux into the fold. Filling things out on drums was Dave O'Gorman ("He had a small business, Paramount Fruit on Ouellette, and he was really good at getting us gigs'), and by the late summer of 1979 The Spy's were about ready to rock. What followed over the next twelve months became the stuff of local legend. The band got their first gig at Windsor's Drop-In Tavern, a place known more for heavy dinosaur rock than for punk. ("I think a tomato or egg got thrown at us, so I thought, 'Hey, we're doing something right'.") More shows followed, including a spot in support of Toronto's Battered Wives at the Masonic Temple the following year.

By the time the band went down to Salem Studios in Leamington to record a couple of tracks for a single, they had gelled into a taut act with their own loyal army of fans. Alas, with such crowd pleasers as 'Welcome to the Cruel World' and 'I Wanna Be Like You' packing the dance floors, the lads demurred somewhat on their choice of songs, going with two newer ones instead, 'Underground' and the snappy 'Machine Shop'. And despite the muffled sound ("It wasn't mastered right. It should've been more, like, raucous"), 'Underground' / 'Machine Shop' has managed a following all its own in the punk world, appearing on Smash The State Vol.2 in 1994. (Info: Michael Panontin @CanuckistanMusic) - Awesome Record with fifteen bombs!

THE RAGS - Crunch!! 1991

The European Championship qualifier against Estonia is very one-sided therefore a short detour to wdthtc. After their great three song EP the Rags pushed their only album a year later on Incognito Records with ten '77 style supple punkrock nuggets and it crunches neatly and captivates with great melodies and highly recommended listening. I guess a short time later, the band has scattered in all winds.

CHARLEY'S GIRLS - Fuck 2x7'' 1993

Now an absolutely rare gem that was released by Incognito Records as part of their 333 x Up & Down series. Charley's Girls, a short living combo which were founded 1977 and the band consisted of Peter (vocals), Franz (guitar), Muscha (guitar), Sabrina (drums) and Peter (bass) and they performed in the center of Düsseldorf between 1977 and 1979 at the legendary Ratinger Hof. They never made any record and in 1978 they formed other pioneering bands like Mittagspause and Fehlfarben. This murderous, lousy quality cocktail was recorded on 3 March 1978, at a masquerade ball under the motto "Punk", at the New Orleans, Düsseldorf but these ten rebellious songs document the ravages of that time and many questioned the system's obedience and lockstep and wanted to do their own thing. Sometimes I miss that spirit nowadays, all has become easier and more commercial and a lot of shit is coming out, here and there cool stuff too but I'm not a real friend of this. Well, no matter... it is important that it pleases.

V/A - Up + Down 1994

It goes forward now with this sunny compilation by Incognito Records and its a small excerpt of their proud 333 x Up & Down series which features circa 45 EP's and a few of them are waiting somewhere in this theatreI will quote the exquisite introduction by Barny, the label boss, so you know what medicine you need: "Two years ago we started putting out 7''s, which are limited to 333 handnumbered copies each. No, we're not lazy, but we were sick of the music-business and we wanted to release just good music by cool bands. We didn't look for famous names and didn't give a fuck about "market-chances" or bollocks like that. If we liked a band we put out a record by it. That was it! Of course, we couldn't expect to sell thousands of records by These not too famous upstarts, so we had to limit them. We thought 333 would be a not too bad number.... When the series started we've been surprised about the big publicity in mags and zines. People from all parts of the world wrote letters to us and in due of this big request we're re-releasing the best songs of the first bunch of 7''s now. An important note for CD-haters: this 74 minutes flood has one third more playtime than a LP, but it costs less than one third more than a vinyl-longplayer. Technical developments are not always bad, even not the "anti-punk" CD, if you use it the right way! Anyway: If you still hate silverfishs, go buy the original 7Inches of the 333 x Up & Down series. We're trying hard to feature bands from around the globe and so the '77 style survives us all." Finally, I would like to mention the excellent black and white artwork with lots of infos, pictures and little bedtime stories so that even deafs have their fun.

TRIEBTÄTER - Hass & Krieg 1984

Cool German Punk from Stuttgart by Triebtäter, founded 1980 and Corpus (vocals), Johnny (guitars), Peter (bass) and Willy (drums) have set with their fifteen striking bangers an exclamation point and brought via Rat Records on our turntables. Solid masterpiece that fits seamlessly with classics from AGR or Weird System. In 1992 Incognito Records released a six track EP with demos from 1982 as part of the 333 x Up & Down series and present on numerous tape compilations. Shortly after Hass & Krieg the band unfortunately broke up.

THE RAGS - s/t EP 1990

Loud, fast and melodic '77 punk from Darmstadt hide this four men in their luggage and it's time to open the door to the barbarians and together we celebrate their debut record with three ass-kickin' numbers, nothing more nothing less, released via the essential German label Incognito Records. The Rags: Sebastian (vocals), Holger (bass), Reiner + Marc (guitars) and Oli (drums), had also an song on the not uninteresting international Flops Of The Pops compilation and in the same year they published their only album called Crunch (coming soon). I think after playin' a few gigs this year the band broke up. So enjoy a small legacy by this great combo for your deaf ears.

BOYZ NEX' DOOR - Welcome To The Wonderful World Of Thee Mighty Boyz Nex' Door EP 1995

Very good EP by this combo from Turin which belongs to the glorious 333 x Up & Down series via Incognito RecordsProbably the first record and it comes along with four songs in a decent '77 style. Sounds almost strange because from this country I know finest Hardcore & Oi! stuff but these are the 90s Baby and the world is changing. Enough bla bla, who cares? By the way, my monitor is starting to shit off who sends me money?

BROKEN TOYS - 4 Track EP 1990

Classic 'bubblegum' punkrock from Boston/USA. These songs plus some more were recorded in 1986 and have been originally released at the band's own label Trash Tone Records on audio-cassette-format. Then Incognito got aware of these punkrock-nuggets and pressed the best four tunes on a 7inch. Brilliant sound like Sloppy Seconds, Blisters, etc. and if you want more don't miss their Dirt album in this house of fools.
