THE KELPIES - Television 2003

Final a late evening post and this belongs to one of my favorite bands from Sydney, The Kelpies and this release from Head Miles Records is an awesome one and features twenty-four tracks, their entire recorded output, including their Aberrant and Phantom Records releases: the tracks are taken from three separate recording sessions from 1981 and 1982. Tracks 1-13 were recorded onto cassette in the bands rehearsal space underneath 51 Stanley Street, East Sydney in 1981, tracks 14-21 recorded to 8 track Now Studios, Sydney 1981, tracks 22-24 were from a 24 track session in 1982 for a Phantom records single. This 24-song disc compiles all that's gone before and adds another tune, the studio version of the post-punk sounding "How Can I Tell You". The first thing that must be said is that the Kelpies were very much a vehicle for the songwriting of Mark Easton, an under-appreciated talent if there ever was one. He has a hand in each tune (except for "Change", which was co-written by singer Jim Atkins and Danny Rumour, then of Sekret Sekret and now with the Cruel Sea). The themes are the obvious punk ones of boredom, alcoholism, serial killers but there's a degree of lyrical sophistication that lifts the songs above the norm. Don't know where I got all the infos but thx and let the Kelpies rule.

V/A - Flowers From The Dustbin 1983

Puh, what a fuckin' Saturday and what a fuckin' match too...I hate when I see a good game and this gets lost needlessly. Well, fuck the day, today it's time for another superb compilation from Down Under and this is the first Sydney Punk Bomb, released on Aberrant Records. If I compare this to the second one Not So Humdrum then I must say: The Kelpies are great (love this band), Positive Hatred are damn cool (World War XXIV too) and the rest is okay but knocks me not really from my stool. Well, about taste we can argue but apart from this all three compilations of this mini-serie are delicious. So, maybe I post something more later when my headaches have subsided.

1.Television - THE KELPIES
2.In Tune With Living - POSITIVE HATRED
3.Piracy - QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE
4.Heart Attack - WORLD WAR XXIV
5.Woe - VELLOCETTE
6.The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - BOX OF FISH
7.Toys Out Of Control - WHAT?!!
8.25 Hour Hoods - QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE
9.No One You Can Trust - POSITIVE HATRED

11.Campell’s Song - WHAT?!!
12.My Wall - THE KELPIES
13.Our Father - BOX OF FISH
14.Cathode Ray Gun - QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE

THE KELPIES - Take Me Away 7'' 1982

One of my favourite Aussie Band are the Kelpies. They were a superb band in Sydney during the early 80s. They began in March of 1981 and, according to the liner notes of their one and only LP, developed "a knack of being banned from venues as quickly as they packed them out." They lasted until August of 1982, leaving behind the Phantom Records single "Take Me Away/Second By Second" and three tracks on the brilliant Aberrant Records compilation Flowers From The Dustbin to go along with their lone album.

The Kelpies consisted of Ashley Thomson along with James Gelding as lead singer, Mark Easton and Brian Conolly on guitars, Con Murphy on bass. Con and Mark had been in the Sydney punk band Suicide Squad, with Mark also having played in the Bedhogs and the delicately named Vic Vomit and the Varicose Veins. James had also been in the Bedhogs & another band called Black Runner. Brian had been in the Swankers & Aftermath.

Their first gig was at the Royal Exhibition Hall on March 27, 1981. The band did well from the start because their members had good reputations among the gig-going crowd from their previous efforts, but they were plagued by violence at many of their gigs. They played places like the Manly Vale Hotel, Sydney Trade Union Club, Sgt. Peppers and Brownies. In May 1981 they recorded a 9 song demo at the 8-track Now Studios in Sydney.

Three of these tunes ("Television", "My Wall", and "Truro Murders") are the ones that appear on Flowers From The Dustbin. After a temporary break up in September 1981, they reformed for another demo recording session in March of 1982. Subsequently they went to a 16 track studio and recorded three more songs, two of which made up the Phantom single. But it wasn't to last; the band played their last gig on July 30, 1982 at Mosman Hotel and split for good in September. They have now reformed and are releasing a new album and doing their first show back on the 9th oct 2003 at the annandale hotel Sydney! (source: mp3.com)

THE KELPIES - Official Bootleg 1986

It's time to pay tribute to another favorite band of mine that set high musically standards, but unfortunately they were only two years active and released far too little. So this damn rare fucker came via Aberrant Records and 507 copies of this superb slab exist. Fourteen goodies in a very good sound quality and I love their raw and pure personality. Excellent liner notes which I would like to quote: "During their brief existence, beginning March 1981, the Kelpies produced some of the best, wildest and most memorable gigs seen in Sydney, developing a knack of being banned from venues as quickly as they packed the out. Combined with internal personal problems, this eventually led to their demise in August 1982, with only one single on Phantom Records and three tracks on the first Aberrant compilation Flowers Of The Dustbin. This tape, released with permission of the band, was recorded sometime in 1981 during a rehearsal in the mattressed basement of 51 Stanley Street, Darlinghurst, also known as The Dungeon Tapes. Its release it to make available the classic material that should have been an album for a band that could have had the world." The Kelpies: James (vocals), Brian & Mark (guitars), Con (bass), Ashley (drums), were (and still are) a real highlight of Australian underground musicA Must Listen!

V/A - Tepid Spit Artists/Rare Trax Vol.9 1988

I leave April with this bootleg tape from Down Under which I bought in the 80s from any mailorder when I remember right. At that time I'm not an insider of Australian Punk stuff and  that's why I get this tape for a low price. Now most of the songs are still available and on classic compilations (Flowers From The Dustbin, Bloodstains Across Australia, Not So Humdrum, etc...) scattered but a few cuts are still rare and the records nowadays very hard to get. I think the song selection here is quite good and the work has been worth in any case. This is a C-60 tape in an acceptable sound quality and the last post for today. I wish a sunny long weekend.

V/A - Where Birdmen Flew Revisited Vol.3 1999

Before I go to the orthopedic surgeon, I take advantage of the free time and send a sign of life with the following fantastic compilation from 'Down Under', a small series called Where Birdmen Flew Revisited enjoyed a small guest appearance at the end of the Nineties and is very welcome in my house. On the one hand because I love the music from there, on the other hand their singles are difficult to obtain in Europe and yes, there are numerous bootlegs with well known bands, which are almost all essential and therefore many of the bands and songs are similar, but we had this theme before, and yet it's good that new or tried-and-tested comps are constantly being published from there and they always piques my interest. It's difficult to get hold of these records these days and unfortunately they always cost a lot of money, but it's worth it. Volume 1 is a killer and this record as well.

V/A - Paths Of Pain To Jewels Of Glory 1983

This was a request by myself and first I search the www and found it on stripedsunlight blog but unfortunately is no activity there so I have strewed an email to my friends and was prompt answered. I think this is the first compilation on Phantom Records and it's full with pretty songs, most of them were released as 7Inches, a few unreleased. Pleasant bandwidth between Alternative & Punk with little outages. Check ABC for more detailed info. Coz the record has been requested by many of you so I think a re-post here is not harmful. B.t.w. nice artwork. What remains: once again another fine piece of vinyl from down under - ENJOY!
