THE HOAX - Quiet In The Sixpennys 12'' 1980

Puhh, somehow I'm not getting going today, weak and mentally sluggish, and also that I was a bit happy yesterday after the victory in Stuttgart, I don't know why I'm so listless.... well..... because I'm bored now and have nothing else better to do, next post: four songs and the third record in form of a 12Inch from Manchester's The Hoax, released along with all their other records on the band's own Hologramme Music label, ca 2000 copies exist. The bands line-up changed shortly after this release and after a last EP (1981) some of them became Emergency, who released the acclaimed Points Of View EP in 1983 on Riot City Records. I don't want to leave unmentioned a few compilation appearances and also noteworthy their only album So What which is terrific.... and now; continue chilling!

MAU MAUS - The Singles Collection 1996

The Olympics have started, but to be honest, I'm not interested in that, although I'm enthusiastic about sports, but I think choosing a venue that has little to do with winter sports and ignores human rights is pretty stupid and ridiculous. But let's leave this topic, back to the music. A strong 80's band wich release five solid 7Inches during this time is Mau Maus and all of these can be heard on this excellent compilation. A bit info: Named after the 1950's secret political faction from Kenya, and inspiried by a US Hardcore act of the same name, Sheffield's Mau Maus formed after leaving school in late '79. Consistng of Chris (vocals), Andrew (guitar), Kevin (bass), Paul (drums), they had no equipment and no rehearsel room. But enthusiasm overpowered these problems and within months the band saw themselves playing a dire set of cover versions and poor original pieces at local Youth clubs. But that changed quickly and 1981 they were opener for the Angelic Upstarts @ the Marples Club. With the inspiration from US bands, they combine this with the inevitable influence of the contemporary British punk scene and create some of the hardest-hitting, most rough UK82 sounds how I love it. As far as I know, Mau Maus are active again, playing gigs and who knows, maybe a new album will follow soon.

DEAD KENNEDYS - Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death LP + Flexi 7'' 1987

When I say goodbye I wanna be buried with this record. Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death is the last amazing album by the brilliant Dead Kennedys, my favorite band from the States, which appeared on Jello's Alternative Tentacles label after their dissolution in 1986. And it's become a compilation with all their 7Inch tracks plus rare live goodies, an awesome farewell by a great bandI quote the wiki entry here because these are really fitting words for this album I think: "The album consists of songs (or in some cases, different versions of songs) that were not released on the band's studio albums. The original vinyl version had tracks 16 and 17 on an extra flexi disc. The album was certified gold by both BPI and the RIAA in December 2007. The title is a play on the ultimatum by Patrick Henry, "Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me Death!", and is intended as a commentary on American consumerism. Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death was the last Dead Kennedys album that Biafra approved the production of, which also led to it being the last album released through Alternative Tentacles.

The slab includes "Pull My Strings", which was played only once on March 25, 1980, when Dead Kennedys were invited to perform at the Bay Area Music Awards in front of music industry bigwigs to give the event some "new wave credibility". The band spent the day of the show practicing "California Über Alles", the song they were asked to play. About 15 seconds into the song Jello Biafra said, "Hold it! We've gotta prove that we're adults now. We're not a punk rock band, we're a new wave band." The band, who all wore white shirts with a big, black S painted on the front, pulled black ties from around the backs of their necks to form a dollar sign, then started playing "Pull My Strings", a satirical attack on the ethics of the mainstream music industry. The song also referenced the Knack's biggest hit, "My Sharona". The song was never recorded in the studio but this performance, the only time the song was ever performed, was included on the album.

Also included is "Night Of The Living Rednecks", which was recorded during a show in Portland, Oregon in 1979. East Bay Ray snapped a string on his guitar as the band finished their song "Chemical Warfare", and to pass the time Jello decided to tell a story, with an accompanying bebop-style instrumental from the rest of the band, about how on the last trip the band made to Portland, he had a confrontation with some "dumb rich kids" in a "life-size Hot Wheels car" that involved him throwing a rock at their vehicle after they sprayed water on him and later trapping himself in a telephone booth when they retaliated."

In principle, there is only one word for this record: Masterpiece! In the file I have attached the booklet as pdf, if you prefer jpeg click on the orange button.

RATTUS - Uskonto On Vaara 1984

Third "mini" album by Rattus, legendary Finnish hardcore punx which were formed 1978 in Vilppulaon, on Poko Records with nine short killers. Who could give a better review than Pushead himself, who also provided his art for the cover: "Rattus combustion, startling adrenaline speed and hammerhead blows of power. Featuring the new high-velocity rasping vocals of Annikki, they virtually sweep forth with sharp-edged earloads of riveting force and disorderly rapidity. Brilliant Finnish hardcore, unhesitant and explosive assaults of raw nitro energy." Pushead (MRR #7 • July/August 1983) - And that's exactly what it is, a furious album with little playing time. Numerous albums and singles also prove their creative passion in songwriting, let's generously ignore contributions to compilations, there are too many... and now: POGO!

KLICHÉ - Supertanker 1980

Debut by this Danish New Wave band (1977-1985) from Aarhus on Medley Records that turns out to be a pleasant surprise and relief for tired ears. Energeric, screaming, a hopping bass, shrill guitar and cynical synth influence, with that catchy and upbeat sound Kliché hit perfectly the nerve of the early New Wave phase, artistically & versatile which they continue to expand and refine on their second longplayer Okay Okay BoysThe band has released two albums and a few singles in their eight years of activity and a few sampler contributions also jumped out. Well, what does humanity need? I tell you: relaxed music for relaxed people, far away from the madness of tense horror news and with this record they have their chance.

V/A - The Master Tape Vol.2 2xLP 1983

I hope you're not fed up with awesome stuff from the Eighties because I can present now a rare, fantastic, famous, splendid and delicate double album and this is only possible because the network of maniacs works brilliantly. This damn cool monster compilation on Affirmation is the final & second Master Tape after the awesome Volume 1 from 1982 and it's again full with exclusive songs/bands (mostly from the midwestern US) who show solid potential, wrote catchy tunes and almost released little further material, surely no surprise by the competition in this country, but that's why compilations are devised, they too can gather a small fan base around them and get and deserve attention in other regions/countries. Forty-three examples have been captured on vinyl, of which "End Result" doesn't really fit on these records, at least not with meBut as always, it's a matter of taste and, as always, who fucking care. Open a beer and get high on these hot goodies as I do.

V/A - 天橋立に来た岸壁の母 Amanohashidate 1986

Very good compilation by MCR Company with six combos from Japan and I'd almost like to say this time with more melodic pieces that cause a bit of a surprise. Of course, fast songs still present but far from the banging of the typical representatives and what I know. 1000 copies were pressed, comes with informative lyric sheets, unfortunately not in English, but that doesn't lessen the pleasure of listening and overall a successful selection. Pogo is guaranteed and pushes brilliantly the gray haze offside, also suitable for pleasant useless diets. Cheers!

V/A - They Only Come Out At Night 1985

Let's say Tschüß to gray January with classics from tried and true bands who have released some fine slabs on Clay Records and this compilation has four of them ready. Dynamic PowerPunk songs are convincing from beginning to end on this piece of plastic (albums by them are also represented in large numbers on wdthtc), and the constant high energy is sufficient to turn all this ditties into an amazingly cool and catchy record and I believe, not just my heart will be feel warmer. Definitely a cool one and still easy to get at affordable prices these days, so watch out!

UHF - 13.Julho 1990

If there is a post from Portugal, it's usually my favorites from UHF, which always relax me with their melodic harmonic songs. And I really need that. I'm plagued by lumbar pain that you can't imagine, every step, every movement brings me on the verge of a nervous breakdown and if this shit determines the rest of my life, I'll go crazy. Let's see what the orthopedist recommends. A really crappy introduction for here but I have to get rid of it. Well UHF has been around since 1978 and they very popular in their home country, how I got into this band is thanks to KBD Blog who posted their second 7inch many many years ago, since then I've been a fan of their music. So that you can also enjoy further albums, I have re-upped all their stuff on wdthtc and can only warmly recommend the band to you, you will like it, I promise!

OFF! - Live @ 9.30 Club 25.06.2011

Let's come to a phenomenon from the American west coast and this band is exactly what I associate with Punk: OFF! A four piece from L.A. (not Langsdorf) and this bloody valentine came via Outer Battery Records in limited edtitions with different colours, stickers and on this blast the band were Keith (vocals), Dimitri (guitars), Steven (bass), Mario (drums) and as you can see, even Farrah loves the sound of the fantastic FourThe idea to form the band came after Dimitri had worked as producer on a prospective Circle Jerks album which ultimately fell apart. During that time, Dimitri and Keith had written several songs together which they used to start Off!. Oh what can I tell you, Keith is the ultimate singer with the perfect voice and the songs from Off! are direct and each one a hit to the dull society which is even more stupid in the States than in Europe, and that's what I love about this band, they are authentic, honest and real. Live a treat and they reflect impressively the true quality of life in the so-called 'land of the free' and show us how things really work in the United Fucking States, they angry and shout out its lyrics with pure fervor. Intense, energetic and their sound is built for a climate of frustration and impotence, and its hard-hitting slap in the face is a long-awaited wake-up call for nostalgic escapism. Enjoy this damn good band and get angry!!
