EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN - Kollaps 1981

Blixa Bargeld, F.M.Einheit & N.U.Unruh: this was the first line-up of the 'LÄRM' musicians called Einstürzende Neubauten from Berlin. I don't know if I've already told you, but at some point I heard their sounds on the TV, some eighties music show, and I stopped immediately and had to hear and see it: hammering, drilling, atonal bass noises, distorted guitars and a sudden loud & psychotic screaming voice. At first I didn't know what to think of them, but gradually I started to like the stuff and thought: "Wow, they're crazy but they're doing an excellent job with their homemade instruments. This is fucking innovation!" Well, dear readers, that was forty fucking years ago and do you know that? You see the past clearly in front of you and look at yourself now... that's absolute horror and I hate getting fucking old. Well, anyway, I became a fan of their artistic work and after a few years they finally became more melodic, and a little more commercial (but only a tiny bit). Finally, a good review from someone who can do it better than me:

"Einstürzende Neubauten's first album, as one might imagine, is their most primitive and radical effort, the purest expression of their original aesthetic. This makes the album both historically significant and conceptually intriguing, of course, but what's most interesting about this album is that it still sounds surprising decades after its release. Often, albums that are considered extreme art statements upon their debut sound almost quaint a few years later, but while Kollaps perhaps sounds less extreme to ears that heard industrial music turned into disco pabulum by the likes of Nine Inch Nails than it did before, songs like the eight-minute title track and the rumbling live closer, "Negativ Nein" are still a fascinating blend of rhythm and random bashing, tonality and atonality, with anguished vocals by Blixa Bargeld that often seem to have little connection with anything else in the piece. The brief tracks, like the 80-second "Sehnsucht," are even more extreme explorations of pure noise. Starting as early as the next album, Einstürzende Neubauten would begin slowly introducing more mainstream musical concepts into their aesthetic, making Kollaps as undiluted a listening experience as there is in the entire catalog." DEAD CAN DANCE - s/t LP 1984

Today to a band that I appreciate very much and always enjoy playing: Dead Can Dance, formed 1981 in Melbourne by Brendan Perry (The Scavengers/The Marching Girls) & Lisa Gerrard. Excllent info from their 4AD label for you: "Their music began as collages made from musical lineages, lost tribes and cultures long since forgotten - and by giving new life to so much from the past, they created a genuinely timeless body of work. They shared vocal responsibilities, and while Perry was certainly capable of haunting subtleties and real sonority as a singer, it was more often Gerrard's rhapsodic vocalising that drew the attention of critics and fans. In a sense, Gerrard didn't simply sing for Dead Can Dance: she made sounds with her voice, and turned that experience into something much larger and more far-ranging than mere singing. Perry's soundscapes blur distinctions between organic and sampled, old and new, drawing on disparate traditions (neo–classical, choral, baroque, troubadour) and weaving together influences from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North Africa, the Mediterranean and beyond..." I was lucky to see this fantastic band live in the old opera house in Frankfurt and the almost three-hour performance is one of the best I've ever seen live. With around twenty artists on stage and the appropriate equipment, they filled the hall with their spherical music and sent you into other worlds, far away from reality and I can tell you, my pearl and I are went home very impressed & flashed. "...having finally secured their contract in 1983, it wasn't until March the following year that 4AD released their eponymous first album, a collection of the songs they had written over the previous four years. Also 1984 they released a 12'' "Garden Of The Arcane Delights" which is included here as bonus." Though the band split in 1998, they reformed briefly for a world tour in 2005. In winter 2011, they reunited once again to record a new album and completed a world tour promoting its release in 2012 and they're still alive. I recommend you get to know this band, no matter what album you start with, there is no bad one.

You know with a KBD Sampler you can't do nothing wrong, right? # 26 is a collectionn of early canadian punk from 1977 - 80. Unfortunately, this is one of the harder KBD's to find. It's also one of the best! Much of what is on here is already well known. D.O.A. (two live cuts), The Action & Viletones along with one Forgotten Rebels (Angry) are pretty. Even with the three Smash The State volumes covering a lot of the lesser known bands, a better effort than this could have been put forth. Once more a fine limited (1000 copies) Compilation from the series which I highly appreciate. Brand new and also great Bloodstains Across Canada with more rare Canada stuff.

V/A - Compulsive Agitation EP 2023

The tenth and latest release from dutch D.I.Y. Subunderground Compulsive Agitation’s, Compulsive Agitation, is an excellent EP Compilation featuring six songs from five bands, hailing from the Netherlands as well as the UK. Edition of 400 copies on black vinyl. Well, the label should be familiar to you as it is the home base of the talented school of fuzzpunk, or in short: Ford's Fuzz Inferno whose contribution has not yet been published. This also applies to the other songs (except for Waste). Nun, this little 7Inch is a real grenade with short loud impacts that absolutely smash me into the past when Hardcore became my driving force and I was flashed by the aggressive fast sound. And once infected, it stays in your heart and you know what's good for you. With Hans & Co. you know what you're getting and all ten records aren't late bloomers or lame copies of old heroes, NO! Honest straight pissed off Hardcore with appealing words rolling over you and rousing every lame ass to participate, and to that always an informative artwork. This litle goodies comes with an insert featuring alternative front cover designs and infos about the bands.

VOXPOP - 2 1981

Here is the second record, also appeared on Genlyd Records, by this Danish powerpop combo Voxpop with their charmin' singer Elizabeth. On the debut album the punk factor was more intense while the pop sound on this slab is more in the foreground. The songs so therefore rippling past me with little inspiration and no real highlight. I don't know why the power, freshness and enthusiasm from the debut album were not continued. As if the band made a deal with a major so the songs sound. I mean, if you listen to their first album and compare that with this then you're disappointed. At least I feel that way. Reminds me a little of the fourth album by the Upstarts "Still From The Heart", you know. The statutory concept album that broke off my feet. Maybe was the case here. - Well, the band prove talent and maybe it was changed with their third album.

V/A - Donaustrand EP 1980

Today is National Day in Austria (the people with the strongly melancholic accent) and because I love my neighbors and I'm mentally with yours on this glorious day, hahaha... the best thing today is you are free from work (not this year) and you should spent a walk on the beautiful Donau or visit the whorehouse for a nice fuck or bawl old songs from the past, enjoy a coffee in one of these many charmin' coffeehouses, kill a cop...or take a little of your short time to stop here and found this hot four track punk & rock EP. 1000 copies were pressed and maybe today less unspectacular for our punk rock ears, is this EP, the first real-time document of networking scene of two Austrian cities. The concept was simple and good: Two bands from Vienna (The Vogue & Tom Pettings Hertzattacken) and two from Linz (Miss Molly's Favorites & Willi Warma) contributed this to noble blue vinyl pressed EP each a song with, of which one half in Vienna and the other was sold in Linz. The project was extremely successful - and "Donaustrand", which was the debut release of the afterwards not quite insignificant four groups here, was sold out quickly.

M.I.A. - After The Fact 1987

One of the first punk bands from Las Vegas were M.I.A. and this is their last album which came out via Flipside Records. Before I leave you with an excellent review from their homepage, briefly the note about their debut split 12'' Last Rides together with Genocide that illustrate their musical roots and is a damn big eruption (Vesuvius is kindergarten). "After the Fact is one of the best US punk records of the late 1980s, mostly because it mixes many post-punk influences and innovates where other punks cling totradition. The two guitars rarely play similar parts, there are dynamics & mood settings, contemplative sound and even a Killing Joke inspired tribal backbeat. The production on After the Fact is far superior to M.I.A.'s past efforts, with real bottom, kick, drive and guts. Check out the cover of "California Dreaming" or the effortless “Edge Of Forever” for proof that punk can be a fresh aural pleasure, even at this late date. M.I.A. ultimately paid the same price that the original TSOL and Effigies did when they went against the grain and tried to take punk to its next step: the group split up in early 1988." – Jack Rabid/Trouser Press - I would like to add; in 2001 Alternative Tentacles brought out a cool double record set called 'Lost Boys' (the first 1000 in orange) with thirty-seven rare old blasts, great stuff!

V/A - The Thing That Ate Floyd 1988

This huge 1988 compilation is like a history lesson for those uneducated about the world of the Gilman Street and Californian punk scene of the time. Compiled by David Hayes and originally spanning four sides of 12'' vinyl (and later on a remastered double CD) there are few chinks in this musical armor. Unreleased material comes in the form of such Lookout! artists and that’s only scratching the surface. This iconic release, packed with 34 tracks of goodness also has such favorites of the day as, No Use For A Name, Capitol Punishment and The Vagrants. An amazing representation of the fertile California underground scene that went on to define punk into the 90s. Housed in unique packaging wrapped around a huge booklet. This compilation was released to showcase Bay Area punk bands that were playing at Berkeley's Gilman Street Project in the late 1980s. Original first-pressing has Lookout's old Laytonville address on it and a blue jacket. 4000 copies were pressed. The first 50 copies were pressed on orange vinyl. Released with a 24-page newsprint booklet with info on the bands and lyrics. File this release under: Essential!!

V2 - Speed Freak EP 1978

Damn good debut record by this Manchester combo on Bent Records with three awesome KBD smasher and because I'm a lousy writer I steal a little Info: "V2 were formed in late 1976 by David Wilks and Mark Standley. Both were regulars at Bowie/Roxy clubs in Manchester and became aware of punk rock when Dave Went to see the Sex Pistols in Manchester. This seminal gig at the Lesser Free Trade hall, at which the Pistols were supported by Manchester bands, Slaughter and the dogs, the Buzzcocks, inspired the next generation of bands to come out of Manchester, the Drones, Joy Division, the Fall, and V2. V2 brought their Glam Rock past to the band, and quickly became a popular live act with over the top shows, explosions, smashing up their equipment, and bassist Stan the Man attacking audiences with his cricket bat guitar when they spat at him once to often. Their first single, released on Bent records, (small bent one) was released in late '77, and quickly sold out 3 pressings. It featured three songs, Speedfreak Nothing to do and That's it. V/A - Street To Street (A Liverpool Album) 1979

And after Berlin we go over to the British Isles and visit a city with glorious past: Liverpool. This city compilation was brought to us from Open Eye Records and it exists two versions, the original from 1979 and a re-release in 1980 and when I check it correct is the track of Tontrix the only difference, hmm... why is a mystery to me, probably any royalties or rights or anything else, anyway. I have the second edition and there's some info sheets included and I think these were not standard packed. Who cares, this record is a good overview what's goin' on in Liverpool @ the end of the 70's and musically an excellent range of different styles, my favorites are Big In Japan, Modern Eon, The Accelerators (hell yeah!) and the Malchix. An exquisite record and you buy get this piece of vinyl for little money. In any case well invested!

D.N.A. - A Trip To The Land Of The Dead...And Back 12'' 1984

Released via Hardcore Horror Records this is D.N.A.'s first and only record. Swedish exhiliration, wild and chaotic delivering speedy punches with gruff, raunched-out vocals. In the tradition of the Shitlickers and Anti-Cimex, D.N.A. pushes a rapid pace with enough energy to keep it all together, odd guitar leads and strong bass surges are the prominent highlights as this outfit terrorizes in mayhemic melodies. D.N.A. were from Skövde and founded in the 80s by Nillen (vocals), Petri (guitars), Dan (bass), Henke (drums) and they were among the pioneers of the classic Swedish sound at the time that marked the birth of raw punk and d-beat genre. The singer, Nillen, was actually an original member of Anti Cimex. After 1982’s “Anarkist Attack” EP they all moved to Gothenburg, except Nillen who formed D.N.A. - This 12Inch contains four raw and chaotic bangers, all songs sung in Swedish, a real punk blast from the past.

FIENDENS MUSIK - s/t LP 1979

Here's more rare stuff from the three crowns country and with their debut 7inch 'En Spark Rätt I Skallen' the band break through. Fiendens Musik is located at the intersection of punk prog rock. Although they came to life late 1977, just punk begins, so let them not quite as punk, but somewhere between prog rock and punk. But good was it anyway and it does not prove at least their first album which is one of the best punk records released in Sweden. Their debut is just as cult as the plates at any time with Ebba Grön, KSMB or Attentat. Most of the songs on the album are incredibly good fast punkrock. Stand out a little plate making local radio, which is relatively quiet in comparison with the surrounding grooves. If you've never heard anything from the band before, you must immediately throw you over the song "En Spark Rätt I Skallen", a kick right in the shells. Fiendens Musik has also released a second LP called "Häftiga Hästen & Andra Äventyr" which also has some good punk songs. Perhaps it could be a future project to provide it for incorporation into the Past? (Patrick Carlson)

AMOUR PUZZLE - Pas Mieux EP 1983

Perfect evening yesterday and my first concert since February 2020, great sound, lots of beer, and met a lot of old friends. Phew, but this morning I'm badly hung over and still have so much to do. And that's where a little pop goodie comes in handy and that's exactly what you get now. Here we go: Following the scuttling of Laxatif 126, Gil and Didier Gonet, respectively composer-guitarist and lyricist-singer, continue their journey by founding the duo Amour Puzzle in 1982. A year later the duo released their first EP Pas Mieux on Le Kiosque D'Orphée with four nice synth-pop songs, supported by Vincent (bass) and Nicolas (drums), which, if there was justice, should have directly climbed to the Top 10. The band hibernates in his home studio, recording many songs there At the same time, the duo reaps the fruits of the efforts sown over the two years past, through the national press. In 1987 comes their second and final 7Inch Prends Moi on the Parisian label Milk Shake Records with two supercharged Poprock which, if god drank less, would have deserved to be the HIT of the Eighties.

Two years ago I created this selfmade compilation and the feedback was quite positive and at that time everything in my life was perfect. Now I'm still going through hard times, especially now where Katja's death for the first time approaches. I miss Her so much.... V/A - Även Vackra Fåglar Skiter (Live) 1992

Released via Birdnest Records gives this double record set an fantastic impression of the Swedish underground scene with bands that have caused a sensation with good Powerpunk rock since the mid-eighties, all this were recorded live during Totalgalan, the 18th and 19th of October 1991. This is the CD Version and we find we also infos inside but only in Swedish. But I'm sure these little bio or liner notes express what can be heard, namely a solid selection of bands/songs that achieved a bit of fame in their country and outside of it. Check out the blog and you will find studio material for many of the protagonists mentioned here. Cool piece!

V/A - Keihard En Swingend! 1978

‘Keihard & Swingend’ (Rock-hard & Swinging) is a live registration of Dutch punk and new wave bands in 1978. Recorded live 12/13 and 14 February 1978 at Paradiso/Amsterdam and the result is astonishing. The a-side is more punkrock stuff with bands you might know while the b-side belongs to the new wave bands. The sound is quite good for a thirty years old recording and the feeling seamlessly spills over. On the back cover are some liner notes and if somenone would translate then I would use the info here in this short description (my dutch is extreme rusty). This compilation was released on EMI-Bovema Holland, maybe one of the best release by that so-called major label. Great document from the early dutch underground scene.

DIRE STRAITS - Live @ the BBC 22.07.1978

 

New week and I'll start with something completely different, that means no punk rock but just as brilliant and when we talk about solid rock with corresponding soft elements, I can't get past this band and these guys fascinate me with their melodic and playfully impressive music, like the Wipers or EA80. Live @ the BBC is a live album by the Dire Straits which was released in 1995 but the songs were recorded on 22.07.1978 at BBC Studios in London and involved were Mark (vocals/guitars), David & Hal (guitars), John (bass), Pick (drums), Alan (keys), with one track recorded on 31.January 1981 for the BBC TV program The Old Grey Whistle Test. The album features one unreleased song, "What's The Matter Baby?", co-written by Mark and his brother David. The riffs and general structure of that song were largely recycled for the song "Lady Writer" from the band's second album Communiqué, which may explain why it was never re-recorded in the studio. LIKBAS - Tell Me EP 2021

Now a fine record and let me immediately announce the liner notes from the insert because they make it clear: "Likbas was created as an aftermath of two previous influential Falu punk bands; P-Nissarna and Sloban Sloback, by Matts (vocals/guitars), Larsa (bass), Tomas (drums). Their music was more of a garage rock band with a nudge to NYC and Detroit scene, rather than an angry punk band. On a historical day in 1983, 27th of May, they entered Gävle Ljudstudio to record five tracks. Unfortunately no record was pressed from that session and then they eventually split up and the recording tapes were forgotten and stashed away. Now thirty-eight years later, a label known for its intrepid releases, namely Ken Rock, is keen of letting the world finally enjoy this unique recording. Matts have dug out the old 1/4" Reel-To-Reel recording tapes from the vaults and it has now got the final love and care it so deserve. The tracks can now be enjoyed on this striking 7Inch and the result sounds better than ever. The echoes of the past are here to stay!" And I would like to add; splendid, wild and loud music or in one word: Superb!

ALLER VÆRSTE! - Materialtretthet 1980

Half-time in Hoffenheim and the fuckin' FCB leads with two goals, it seems the chief floor has stabilized. Well, let's come to the Aller Værste!, a Norwegian new wave/ska band from Bergen of the early 80's, which started out as a hobby project by four members of long-forgotten group Johnny Banan Band, members were Chris Erichsen (vocals/guitar), Ketil Kern (drums), Sverre Knudsen (bass/organ), Lasse Myrvold (vocals/guitar/organ) and Harald Øhrn (bass/vocals/organ). Apparently big with John Peel at the time, their debut Materialtretthet on Den Gode Hensikt won a Spellemannspris (Norwegian grammy) in 1980. The group disbanded after their second record, Disniland I De Tusen Hjem. Not easy to describe their sound because typical Ska sounds different but remarkable is the fiepsende organ that reminds me of the Doors. TAV! was part of the punk boom without playing punk. They kept going for a two-year period and released two albums - yet they have an indisputable and central place in Norwegian rock's history and development over the past twenty-five years. Also on numerous compilations and one plus an EP (listen) are in this theatre, meanwhile 1:2.
