SOPHISTICATED BOOM BOOM - s/t LP 1982

From Büren came this Girlie-Pop-Punk band and this is their only record which was released by the well-known swiss label Off Course Records in 1982. The sound is here suported by Buzz, Netz and Pasquale from SOZZ. The band play a simple poppy sound with a few snotty numbers (Beat Girls). I must say that not all songs are burners and partly the whole album is a bit too lame for me but that's with all things I think a matter of taste. Fourteen songs unconcerned, cozy, bubbling with few highlights, fun and love of life (well, there comes better noises from Swiss). About the band so I can't say much but I think they broke up shortly after this release. Check this out for yourselfs!

THE BUCKS - Brave & Stupid 1981

Well, I'm finished with re-upps of two Swiss bands so I could post an extra from the alp area now: After the split of Expo (ex-Nasal Boys) the two original members Rams (bass) and Päde (drums) formed the Bucks (inspired by the British female trio The Slits) and after constant touring they released their first record on Disctrade in 1981. Too many negative experiences in connection with the music industry (the band was under contract by Major CBS, who give them the clever name Expo - Nasal Boys was too offensive, haha..) were crucial for the band resolution in 1978. Not necessarily to describe the Bucks as frustration project, but one thing was clear: they wanted to avoid the market-strategic mechanisms and create their own style and the result is awesome punk'n'roll till you drop and their music and lyrics reflect what can be moved or be moving here and today. All in all they have released six albums and the Bucks still exist today!

V/A - Swiss Wave The Album 1980

All right folks, it's time for a compilation this month and let's move to the Swiss area and enjoy one of the first releases from Off Course Records and this is a decent mix of punk and powerpop. There exist many re-releases and you can read a lot of infos on the discogs page, which label, year, etc..... most of the songs appear on the bands album or 7Inches but these are the original recordings what makes this platte very rare, a good overview about the Swiss underground scene at that time. The label is one of my favourite Swiss one with lots of rare records nowadays. Volume 2 came three years later out on Astan Records, don't know this, someone?

CHIN CHIN - Stop! Your Crying 12'' 1986

Once more Chin-Chin, a Swiss girl wave/punk rock band from Biel/Switzerland, active from mid to late 80s and put out this last record on Farmer Records in 1986. Karin (guitar/vocals), Esther(bass/vocals) and Marie-Anne (drums/vocals), and at the time experience wasn't needed, it was the desire to play. Technical ability was a bonus, a hunger to perform a must. So, although Esther and Marie-Anne had experience as singers for local band Sophisticated Boom Boom, neither had actually played bass or drums respectively before. Similarly, while Karin had some training in classical acoustic guitar, she'd never been in a band or played electric guitar before. It was veteran Swiss punk-rock band SOZZ that gave the eager girls their first break, letting them practice in their rehearsal room and lending them guitars and drum kit until they could afford their own and in November 1983, Chin-Chin played their first gig at the AJZ/Coupole in Biel. Three smashing noisy power-pop-wave-punk songs here from this Swiss trio and its always a pleasure listen to it.

DER BÖSE BUB EUGEN - Zehn Jahre 7'' 1989

Last post for today is again a pretty nice 7'' from this Swiss Punk/Rock Band from Schaffhausen and they're active from 1983 - 1990, later changed their name to Eugen because they found their band name something stupid gradually. First regarded as the swiss version of Die Ärzte, yet their style was different and pretty own. The band released a few singles and seven albums and were much present in the swiss underground scene. The title track is taken from the 1989 album "Himmel, Hölle Und Der Fisch" and the B-Side has with "Lady Blue" an exclusive track. Both tunes (A in german, B in english) very melodic, groovy guitars, a lots of uuhhhhh and ahhhhhh's and lyrically it's about love, what else? Beautiful songs I can always listen... and I think you too.

NASAL BOYS - Lost And Found 2008

A request becomes real. From my former Blog, I found my old words, here I go:
Maybe one of the first punk band from Switzerland are the Nasal Boys. Founded December 1976 by Rudolph Dietrich, Leo Remmel and Heinrich Wüstenhagen. In addition they are surrounded by a steady changing bunch of musicians. Their first gig was in May 1977 under the name 1001 and in October the Boys recorded a few songs and shortly after their only single ''Die Wüste Lebt'' came out on Periphery Perfume in 1978. They continued to play more live shows and how raw and wild they sound live is here on the B-side documented, recorded at Drahtschmidli, Zurich in 23. December 1977. Thanks to a friend of Rudolph, he gave him the recordings and new remixed they are now here available. Would be a shame if they had stayed in the sinking. Former producer Silvio Panosetti found the unreleased studio songs, on side A and they are also great tunes. You can really feel the agressive guitars and the fast rough Nasal Boys sound which is quite unique. I know no other Swiss punk band that played so real hard (Jack & The Rippers as well). The band disbanded in 1978 and change their name into Expo. So this record is limited to 1000 handnumbered copies with a band-story in English and German plus coloured pictures of gig-posters. A loving and excellent record, thanks to Swisspunk for this lost nuggets.

- Many Thx to Fredrik -

MONO - Sisch Doch Nur Äs Märli 1982

Start Sunday with a rather unknown and obscured band from Zurich: The MONO released a great EP in 1981 and a year later their only full length Album at Monokel Records. And the Swissmen present ten talented punk rock anthems in their charmin' Zurich dialect. This is an absolute rare album today and it's very hard to find. I'm searchin' a long fuckin' time to get this copy, believe me. I think 1000 copies were pressed. The pauses between the songs are constantly filled with different noises like birds chirping, strange talks or other similar obscure stuff. Like little intros, very very amusing. The cover artwork is held in very nice, colorful and with a great booklet inside (but I'm too lazy to scan it) and the band has probably paid enormous sums of money and then they went to the employment office. Maybe their neighbor kids have done all the drawings because in Switzerland you help each other. Who knows?, hahaha.... I wonder why they not on the Definitiv Zurich compilation... hmmmmm, anyway, a brilliant album that deserves attention and I know I get surely yours.

NILP - Gift EP 1982

Here we have now a funny band from Zurich called Nilp, four songs that remind me a little bit of the NDW age in the early 80' but it sounds more punk with partially a nice Bontempi organ. Sung in beautiful charming "schwizerdeutsch" dialect. Is good at a party. That's all I have to say from the Alpfront. One more goodie on the famous Definitiv Zurich compilation - Enjoy!

Friday morning and my computer mouse is broken and I torture myself as I write this line. Anyway, let's start with this delicious compilation by rare 7Inches from Europe and except the Aheads one are all complete, A and B side I mean, I think the same concept was taken for the Killed By Death # 77 comp. - well, we need sometimes something new and in these rapid days we all have to be flexible, so the big machine requires that....all right, musically brilliant, artwork & infos perfect, and the back cover says: 500 copies, but with bootlegs nothing's true....only the music.... who cares? (and don't forget, flexibility)

GRAUZONE - Eisbär 7'' 1981

Grauzone was a Swiss band of the early 80's. The press called them pioneers of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) but that is shit in my opinion. At the end of 1979 Marco Repetto (drums) and GT (bass) left the punk band Glueams, to form together with Martin Eicher (guitar, vocals, synthesizer) a new band called Grauzone. Martin had already supported Glueams on their 7'' Mental. They gave their first concert in March 1980 at the club Spex in Berne. Martin's brother Stephan Eicher (guitar) & Claudine Chirac (saxophone) complemented the group temporarily in live performances and recordings. The group refused, however, the commercial requirements, and concentrated on film and studio work. Grauzone was known by the two pieces 'Eisbär' & 'Raum', which were used for the compilation "Swiss Wave - The Album" on Off Course Records. Eisbär hits the lifestyle of that time and got radio airplay in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The song was released as a single and reached number six in the Austrian and place 12th in the german charts. The b-side is a minimalistic synth-pop love song and delight any woman's heart. A classic record I can listen to it everytime, brings back a lot of memories.

V/A - Tanz Mit Dem Herzen 1982

One request now and another one from my former Blog. It seems NDW music is still popular and this record from EMI is a premium blend of this time. Usually only well-known bands on it with their classics and the mixture of synth-pop and 'punk' is acceptable. Those were carefree times, I was young, went to school and first approximations to the Girls and trouble with parentsToday, life is the challenge. Well, the sound is still alive and keeps me fit. A bit of nostalgia for all end 60s. Take care!

V/A - Rough Mixes From Switzerland 10'' 1981

This compilation came out on the Hamburg label Konnekschen and was 1981 a real good record. It was very difficult to get some Swiss plates because they were published in small editions and the distribution was rather poor. So with this release the German punk community noticed that in the cozy alpine republic exists a few bands which are damn good and so more attention spilled accordingly to our neighbours. One mistake, Chaos were from Vorarlberg/Austria and they released together with The Sick a split EP on the famous swiss label Off Course Records, both tracks here, dirty '77 punk at its best. Followed by the Sick tracks which are also fuckin' cool, this EP rules and nowadays traded at prohibitive price. Side B kicks off with the Zurich punks Sperma and they released a few records on Another Swiss Label and their debut 12'' is complete on this record. Love their snotty sound and the dialect, original Schwizerdeitsch, beautiful and for me the best songs here. Last two tracks are from Rudolph's debut 7inch, tempo bit out but 'No Claim With Bluff & Swindle' is a hymn and maybe the most famous swiss punk song. You have now found here four rare 7inches and what remains to do now?

1.Day Douldt - CHAOS
2.Get Out Of My Pocket - CHAOS
3.It's Never Too Late - THE SICK
4.Switzerland - THE SICK
5.Guns Of Navarone - THE SICK

8.No More Love - SPERMA

FRISCHE FARBE - Die Stärke Im Minimum 12'' 1982

Swiss group formed circa 1978 in Aarau by guitarist Gutze Gautschi. They started as a punk band featuring Dieter Meier, however, Meier left after two singles, "Cry For Fame" (released as 'Dieter Meier') and "No Chance" (released as 'Fresh Color'). Meier went on to form Yello. Fresh Color released further singles in their punk style. In the early 80's, Gutze Gautschi assembled a new band including drummer Danny Amsler and their sound moved into a more poppy new wave. Fresh Color started to include synthesizers and developped a distinct dubby production style. Then 'Frische Farbe' was created and release songs in German language; the band's debut longplayer "Die Stärke Im Minimum" (1982) was released via Gold Records. In 1984, Fresh Color shrunk to the duo of Gutze Gautschi and Danny Amsler. On the singles "Disco Nature" and "Get On Up", the duo merged their new wave background with disco and electro. When songwriter and vocalist Humphrey Robertson joined the group, they had their biggest success with "Disco Future" and released their second album, "Nightdreams", in 1985. Soon after, all of the three went into producing a large number of different projects. At the end of the nineties, Gautschi tried to revive Fresh Color. Enjoy now this four great NDW/Pop Love songs here, the a-side in german, the flip in english. Not Bad!

POWER AVENUE - California 7'' 1982

Power Avenue was a punk/wave/noise band from Zurich in the early 80's. Their only record was released in June 1983 in an edtion of 1000 copies. This hard to find little fucker is even in Switzerland quite rare. Musically very eletkro oriented with a noisy guitar accompanied and sung in french in german. Two driving monotonous songs that not change the world but wanna be heard. That's all info I can give you but I think you wanna test it, don't hesitate.
