V/A - Powerpearls Vol.3 1998

Uhh, damn exciting match yesterday at noon with a well-deserved victory for the SGE, the Champions-League is within reach. Now to the announced killer. In the nineties a wave swam over us with unofficial compilations that came up with rare punk classics of the early wild days, the well-known and certainly the best of them are the Killed By Death and Bloodstains series. But there is another interesting third: the Powerpearls series. Just as brilliant and significant contribute to resurrecting lost 7Inch nuggets and getting in touch with bands that nobody or only a few know these days, and whose music kicking just as much as the snotty punk buddies. My focus was more on the first two's and I didn't even know PowerPop that time, but now I like this genre, makes me feel positive and radiant, and it's close rooted with punk and sounds charming and lovely either. There are ten Volumes of these available, most at expensive prices, some with colored vinyl. So keep an eye out for them, it's definitely worth.

1.Bank Holiday Weekend - SEVENTEEN
2.Make The Rules - THE ORBITS
3.Crazy Today - UXB

V/A - Punk Rock/New Wave '77 1978

I hope you have a pleasant Easter days and time for good music. Today a obscure release with mostly bands from the UK and on this compilation, which came out in Portugal via Pirate Dream Records in an edition of 400 copies, are only classics that saw the light of day as 7Inch at the end of the 70s. I bought the slab on my Antarctic vacation thirty years ago from a penguin near the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Stationafter long haggling, for a few dollars. You can surely imagine how amazed I was when I found such a rare record, nowadays only available at high prices, in this region and of course didn't hesitate for long. Well, sometimes I'm lucky too and today I present you the little anecdote and I'm sure you will like the stuff as well. Even though we exchanged addresses, I never met the penguin again, but it will stay in my memory forever. So friends, enjoy the good ole sound that still towers over many current records and I know that won't change.

THE MOONDOGS - Who's Gonna Tell Mary? 7'' 1980

No idea who sent me the following record but one thing is sure, very good idea: The Moondogs were a Northern Irish rock band and formed 1978 in Derry and consisting of Gerry (vocals/guitars), Jackie (bass), Austin (drums). Three months later they had their first gig, together with the Undertones, also from Derry. It was followed by other appearances in Derry, before they accompanied some gigs of the Undertones in England. In November '79 they released their first single She's 19 on the Good Vibrations. The following year they toured with the Pretenders, supported Police and the Tom Robinson Band, among others, and were back on the road with the Undertones. In October '80 their second single Who's Gonna Tell Mary? was released on Real Records. They recorded two more singles before producing their first album That's What Friends Are For in New York in May 1981. Half a year later the band broke up. Welcome guests on rare compilations and that's no wonder with their appealing mid-tempo sound which this 7Inch clearly proves.

THE CRANBERRIES - Rare & Live 2018

Let's start this memorable day with a compilation of the fantastic Cranberries whose singer unfortunately passed away three years ago. I have combined twenty-four rare tracks, B-sides and live material here and their music is always a relaxed companion and let me calm down after a stressful day or when things don't go quite so perfectly. Still hard to believe Dolores is no longer with us. I hope you can enjoy their sound as much as I do, I re-upped their first 12'' Uncertain and after visiting the dentist I continue with more stuff.

VICTIM - The Teen Age EP 1980

Third and final 7Inch from Victim on Illuminated Records with three crackers. The band was founded mid 1977 in Belfast (relocated to Manchester in 1979) and soon they became familiar faces on the fast-emerging Belfast punk scene. On this record, produced by Rat Scabies, Wesley (vocals & bass), Joe (guitars) and Jeff (drums). Started as four piece they released two EP's in the late seventies. They toured a lot with renowned bands and a fourth single plus further demos were recorded but unfortunately never released and little of it is left and after undergoing several line-up changes, the band existed until 1990. But hope came when in 2003 Overground Records released a compilation of all of their early works and 2016 two more CD's came out with new and revised material of the late phase. Also guest on Bloodstains and Killed By Death #33. Great Stuff.

V/A - Killed By John Peel #1 2020

Friends, there is hope again on the KBD front and after a long time finally a new compilation is out and the creators of Vatican Radio Records have the great idea "to conjure up one of the best punk rock compilations we've heard in a long time, from the amazingly rich vaults of John Peel's BBC 1 radio session recordings. Focusing on the less known side of the huge Peel Sessions catalog, Killed By John Peel comes stuffed to the rafters with mind blowing and little known gems from the opening track with French Synth Punk pioneers Métal Urbain and the incendiary recording of their hit E-202 to the closing with the kick ass Power Pop Punk hit She's Alarming by the Wasps, each and every single track on this monster record presents a band at their prime giving it all @ the legendary BBC Radio1 studios." And to my knowledge, Volume 2 is about to be release and we can look forward to it. Great stuff and absolute essential!

1.E-202 - MÉTAL URBAIN
2.Gangland Warfare - THE OUTCASTS
3.Antipope - KING
4.Yummy Yummy - RUDI
5.Jealousy - IDIOT DANCERS
6.Further Education - THE CORTINAS
7.Going Round In Circles - ALTERNATIVE TV
8.Open Sound 1978 - SKIDS
9.She's Alive - SCARS
10.Countdown - THE LURKERS
11.Energy Boy - THE FLYS
12.Haircut Bob Dylan - FUNBOY FIVE

THE OUTCASTS - Self Conscious Over You 1979

First record finished and I'm a little tired, now I think I'll have a hot tea next and then chill out a bit. But first, another great release: Belfast's Outcasts are most frequently invoked as one of the bands that flourished around the slipstream of Good Vibrations labelmates the Undertones. In fact, single for single (two clicks away), song for song, the Outcasts far outrank their better-known peers and "Self Conscious Over You" is the band's peerless debut album which was released, of course on Good Vibrations Records and has all the hallmarks of the classic Outcasts sound. Eleven nuggets, characterized by the heavy rhythms, prove this. (Words with a little help of Dave Thompson) - The band formed in early 1977, with an initial line up of Blair Hamilton (vocals), Greg Cowan (bass), Colin "Getty" Getgood (lead guitar), and Greg's brothers Colin Cowan (drums), and Martin Cowan (rhythm guitar). According to Greg Cowan, their name derived from the fact that they were banned from five clubs in one week. Hamilton left the band within a month of its formation, with Greg Cowan taking over vocals. More sound by the four on wdthtc is not hidden.

U2 - 11 O'Clock Tick Tock 7'' 1980

It's not a mystery about talkin' U2, the Dubliners began in their hometown 1976 and their music rooting in the political turmoil that was all around them. The four have been in the music business for over forty years but if you look back at their early years, you notice that their early singles were absolute nuggets and are hardly comparable to today's modern commercial stuff which is not bad but I like the older days, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock is one example of their early phase and both tracks are none album cuts and shows the bands New Wave face. The b-side is also great and not published anywhere else. Released via Island Records and I would like to show you with this little 7Inch another, a non-commercial side of the band; the beginning days which were just as difficult and exhausting, as with a young punk combo, that had to search as well, to bring their music to the people at all. - Nowadays the slab still very popular and not cheap... so let's enjoy the old irish stuff and I'm now devoted to the SGE's soccer match vs. Mainz.

MIDNITE CRUISER - Rich Bitch 7'' 1977

Northern Ireland didn't have a big underground scene but some cool bands came from there and Midnite Cruiser from Belfast is one of them and they consisted of Paul (vocals), Crow & Peege & Rodney (guitars), Jimmy (bass) and Ger (drums). Their only 7Inch was released on Cliff Moore's IT Records label. He owned four record shops in Northern Ireland and after a meeting with Chiswick in London, he returned home and to set up his own label. Only five singles were made. A bit useless info: Midnite Cruiser were basically Speed with extra guitarist Rodney joining the ranks. The music is much punkier than the previous Speed release. The tracks for the single were recorded at Hydepark Studios, Templepatrick and engineered by George Doherty, who would go on to form his own Rip-Off label the following year. The band split soon after the single's release. Paul West (real name Paul Maxwell) went on to join the Tearjerkers. The two songs are also guests on the indispensable Bloodstains Across Northern Ireland compilation.

V/A - Chiswick Aquaria 1978

Magnificent pub/punk compilation on this rare Italian issue with bands made at least one 7inch on Chiswick Records, the sublabel and forerunner of Ace Records, started in 1975 by Ted Carroll and Roger Armstrong, with its origins in a second hand 45 records market stall in London. They were later joined by record fanatic Trevor Churchill. Towards the end of the 70s, they were releasing work by a series of "Pub Rock" bands. It is now the punk, power pop and rock label in the Ace Records stable. Nine bands with fourteen songs from their early young & unspent days, some made it into big business, others disappeared into nowhere and some swam unfortunately away to the right scum. Apart from that, this is an excellent compilation, this is the expensive promo release, and still worth buying. 1980 came out a Spanish release called Chiswick Aquaria Collection with more label bands.

V/A - Bad Teeth #4: UK & Irish Punk Bands 1977-1982

Before I switch to SGE against Cologne today the last volume of Bad Teeth and before you ask 'Where's # 2?', don't exist. Again generated by Hyped To Death with Punk/Powerpop bands V-Z. The rip was improved a little by me, because the original CD scratches at the beginning what you can hear on song # 4 and I placed one more rare piece by the Vektors at the end of the compilation. One more little hint, Zeppo & The Zepp Zepps is a Swedish band. Enough blah blah, enjoy the music and look forward, like me, to hopefully more H2D issues in this theatre. Don't miss Volume 1+3 and complete your collection.

BERLIN - Over 21 7'' 1980

One of the early Dublin Punk/New Wave bands. Early line-ups included John Borrowman & Chris Green who left in mid-1978 to form The Atrix . Ex School Kids drummer Charlie Hallinan joined around the same time, while original drummer Pat Moylett (brother of Boomtown Rat Johnny 'Fingers' Moylett) became the bands manager. Berlin were accused of cashing in on the Rats connection by some and even of copying their act outright, especially lead singer Brian Devon, but these accusations was unfair.Berlin supported both The Clash and The Jam at the Top Hat in Dub Laoghaire, two legendary gigs in Dublin which thousands now claim to have attended. They were treated badly by roadies when supporting Graham Parker at the Olympic Ballroom, which resulted in some equipment damage. They turned down an offer from RSO Records and had two tracks ("Tube Talk" and "Waiting For The Future" slated for inclusion on the aborted/delayed Irish new wave comp which eventually became Just For Kicks in late 1979. During November-December 1978, Berlin and the New Versions set out on the "Streets Ahead Tour '78" across Ireland, the first new wave tour of the country. They appeared on Our Times on RTE TV at the end of the year.

Berlin played the Dandelion Market twice in 1979 and once in 1980: on 5 May 1979, 25 August 1979 and 2 February 1980. Most of 1979 was spent building momentum. They recorded demos which were aired by RTE Radio 2. They were courted by Charisma Records Dave Hitchcock as early as May and finally signed a deal with Charisma in September. The contract was for two singles and one album. The first single was announced for October but didn't come out until the following January 1980. Meanwhile their vinyl debut was on the "Just For Kicks" various artists LP released at the end of 1979, which included their track "Stop Stop", a strong effort. They played a farewell show at McGonagles on October 14, signalling their move to the UK. The band released their debut single January 1980, well after it's originally announced release date of October 1979. "Over 21" is a great pop punk track, though the band came in for some stick for being well over 21 themselves, especially Brian Devon and Maurice Czerniak. Both sides were written by bassist Maurice Czerniak. The Portugese issue appears to have predated the Irish & UK release by a few weeks. They performed the A-side (and, as far as I recall, another track) on Our Times on RTE Television, though I may be remembering the 1978 appearance. I vaguely recall Brian Devon holding up a sign saying "Hello Mum" or "Look Ma, I'm on TV". Does anyone have video of this? In February 1980 they embarked on a UK tour and appeared during the Sense of Ireland/Sounds of Ireland gigs in \ London in March 1980, playing Acklam Hall with U2 and the Virgin Prunes in support on the 19th (with at least one warm up gig in Nottingham a few days previous). When this failed to break the band, they split up, in April 1980.

Berlin reformed later in the year and released a second single in November 1980. "Boyfriend" appeared on Philips Records. It is a much weaker effort than their debut and sold poorly, which may explain why it is so hard to find now. It seems to have had very little distribution, unsurprising as the band split again soon after it's release. There are undoubtedly unreleased recordings (eg "Tube Talk"). Not to be confused with the Australian pop band on IRS Records who took your breath away. (Source: irishrock)

V/A - Bad Teeth #1: U.K. & Irish Punk Bands 1977-1982

Last post today, and as you're used to in this theater, a great compilation created by Hyped To Death. A little introduction of the label from their page: "Rare, obscure, independent and undiscovered punk, post-punk, "D.I.Y." and Power Pop Groups from the US and UK 1977-1984. Hundreds and hundreds of bands dealing with compilations and dozens of releases of individual acts, all brilliantly restored on CD and custom CDRs. Plus tens of links and liner notes galore..." I think all their releases came out in limited editions and are not uninteresting for collectors. This one is my only copy, and try to find a disc by yourself is similar to finding the Holy Grail, almost impossible. The best way is to contact the label. Well, maybe more will follow or someone out there will send me some. Until then, enjoy it!

THE OUTCASTS - Magnum Force 7'' 1981

Bad boys of the Ulster punk scene The Outcasts were formed in Belfast in June 1977 by the Cowan brothers: Greg (bass/vocals), Colin (drums) and Martin (guitar). They were joined by Colin Getgood (better known as Getty) on guitar. They played their debut gig in August of that year at Paddy Lambs pub on Belfasts' Upper Newtownards Road. The gig ended in a mini riot when the local 'Spides' took exception to a number of "strange looking punks" who turned up to watch the band. Their 2nd gig at The Pound Club in Belfast was a lot quieter as they played to a mainly punk audience. This is their fifth 7Inch on GBH Records and sadly this was the last record to feature Colin, who was killed in a car accident, shortly before the single was released. The A-side is a nice slow stomper while the flip's a decent rockin' killer. Three albums are released to date, plus some compilations with rare tracks from the early days.

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS - Get A Life 1994

Get A Life is the sixth studio album by Belfast pioneers Stiff Little Fingers and since 1977 they celebrate refreshing punk music. This album helped renew interest in SLF just as newer bands that sited them as a major influence, such as Bad Religion, Rancid and Therapy, were coming to prominence. Thirteen catchy songs, including some ballads, provide variety and entertaining listening pleasure. Still touring and if they coming to your city I recommend a visit and listen on the way to Go For It because SLF are still at the forefront of the punk movement. And now....

THE CRANBERRIES - Uncertain 12'' 1991

An unscheduled post now and I guess some of you are more or less familiar with the Cranberries whose singer Dolores O'Riordan died yesterday unexpectedly in London. I've heard about via the fifteen minutes horrorshow on TV and it is really sad. I shared many beautiful moments with her music and their first three albums are still among their best and came out at the right time where I was total fucked up and went through difficult times and their shallow melancholic music was often the oil for my engine. Let's remember her with the first vinyl release on Xeric with four nice poprock numbers... R.I.P. Dolores!

SACRE BLEU - Broken Promises 7'' 1979

Well, this band from Dublin is a typical Pub Rock band and they have two 7Inches released on Polydor and Sacre Bleu were formed 1978 by Anthony (vox), Pat (bass), Frankie (keys), Dick (guitars) and Albert (drums) and you should visit the glorious Irish Rock site for more info. In this file you find both records and if you want get the rare Just For Kicks compilation for more interesting sound from the green isle. Too bad that's so little of this land is available - I think I'll have something more tonight.....maybe.. stay tuned!
