SUB KIDS - Kids Of Glory 7'' 1983

The Sub Kids were formed in 1978 from the ashes of the Spiders, a group created at the end of 1976 at Grande Synthe just next to Dunkirk, around Fred Rok (13) on vocals/bass, and his brother "Scum" (15 years) on guitar/vocals, André "Ded" Leprince (drums) and a certain Bruno on vocals. England is very close, pirate radios and BBC programs arrive in homes, making all the Punk groups and Pubrock of the moment heard. The Spiders split up, Fred took the guitar and formed the Suburban Kids in 1978 with François "Steve Matchbox" Hyart on bass, Matthieu on drums and Frederic aka "Bubu or Freddy Dustbin" on vocals and then on drums. They open for Les Boys in Dunkirk on January 21, 1978. Scum on rhythm guitar joined the group before leaving for the army in April 1979. On October 27, 1979, they were on stage at the Palais du Littoral Grande Synthe during the Côte d'Opale festival, with Electrons, Identity and After Death, and another at the MJC in Boulogne. They participated in "Live in Dunkerque" on April 18, 1980 with Marnalau Chris, Lead and Bass and Dunedozer at the Coudekerque Branche convention hall, then the Golf Drouot in Paris on January 16, 1981 where they finished third behind Louis XIV and Blitz. February 81, Fred leaves for military service and it is his returned brother Scum who takes the lead. The name is shortened to Sub Kids. The Outcasts are invited to Grande Synthe on May 22, 1981 by the Sub Kids who are opening for them. Matthieu Converty leaves (we will find him in the Butter Cookies) and he is replaced by Bubu, as well as his brother Stéphane who arrives in 1982, which makes two drummers for the formation at that time, like their favorite group Outcasts. The group is going to see the Outcasts again in concert in Paris at the Gibus in December 1982 so that the Irish come again to Dunkirk, which will also be done with the Rats on the bill on January 16. Their first single "Kids Of Glory" was released in early 1983 on the service provider Aaltrack. The latter has a studio in an old converted farmhouse near Ghent. Apart from the Belgian groups, many French will record there, like Rosenthal, the SS Kids, Identity, Electronaze or the Scraps.

The same year, they are on the compilation Chaos En France Vol.1 with the title “Against The Law”. The second EP Boots On Cars was released in 1984, still on Aaltrack. Stéphane leaves the group. The previously unreleased "Don't Be The First" is featured on the New Wave Record compilation 1984 - The First Sonic World War. They also take care of an association, "Sur Les Docks", with the publication of a fanzine of the same name. Fred leaves the group definitively in July 1985 to explore other musical horizons. The Sub Kids continues for a while, a few dates with the Gibus again with the Outcasts, in Reims at the Salle MJC Claudel on March 23, 1985 with Vaterland and at the same place one of their last appearance with the Brigades on October 20, 1986. They stopped definitively in 1987. Fact is, that this group since its beginning 1977, confirms the fact that it is one of the first seminal Punk groups in France, and which is not from Paris. A nine track compilation was released by Negative Records in 1988, followed by the Vinyl Songs CD in 2004 with unreleased tracks and live material. (source: 45vinylvidivici)

OX - Monkey Public EP 1981

Second and final 7Inch by Ox from Le Havre on SMAP Records. Line-up on this rare piece were Sylvain (vocals), Jean-Philippe & Eric (guitars), Alain (bass), Claude (drums), Buffalo (harmonica) and three rocking numbers were recorded, catchy and solid and not as rough as on their first single DrugsWell, no further info can be found, nor any compilation invitations, but on Je Suis Né Dans Une Poubelle you can enjoy them alongside other cool French combos with a song from their first record. Let's continue with the Soccer World Cup, which I enjoy a lot, and tonight it will be clear who gets to go home.

AMOUR PUZZLE - Pas Mieux EP 1983

Perfect evening yesterday and my first concert since February 2020, great sound, lots of beer, and met a lot of old friends. Phew, but this morning I'm badly hung over and still have so much to do. And that's where a little pop goodie comes in handy and that's exactly what you get now. Here we go: Following the scuttling of Laxatif 126, Gil and Didier Gonet, respectively composer-guitarist and lyricist-singer, continue their journey by founding the duo Amour Puzzle in 1982. A year later the duo released their first EP Pas Mieux on Le Kiosque D'Orphée with four nice synth-pop songs, supported by Vincent (bass) and Nicolas (drums), which, if there was justice, should have directly climbed to the Top 10. The band hibernates in his home studio, recording many songs there At the same time, the duo reaps the fruits of the efforts sown over the two years past, through the national press. In 1987 comes their second and final 7Inch Prends Moi on the Parisian label Milk Shake Records with two supercharged Poprock which, if god drank less, would have deserved to be the HIT of the Eighties.

THE BRIGADES - Costa Del Dole 1986

Today a really cool record from France with a lot of esprit, refreshing guitars, rich bass runs and pleasant vocals. Melodic and powerful the whole thing and I like this. Info: The Brigades were formed 1981 in Paris and after a few changes, the group stabilized with Vlad "Dialectics" Marcus (vocals), Kid Bravo (guitars), Xavier Saveriu "Chatterton" (bass) and Tony Aigri (drums). Vlad remembers: "I met Kid when I arrived in Paris, a friend with whom I was doing a fanzine (Burning Rome) introduced him to me. On Cité 96 in the evening, we played just after the program of Stéphane Planel and the singer of Orchester Rouge, Théo Hakola. With Kid, we set up the band with Tony on drums, and recruited by the classifieds, (Xavier in Corsica) on bass. Our name was chosen above all for the ease to understanding it in the world. Our first single, Riot & Dance, did a great job, same for the mini LP 'Bombs N'Blood N'Capital', both released on our label Rock Radical Records (founded with the aim of having our own control over what we produce), and we really started touring in 1984 and I remember Dunkirk where we met the Sub Kids. Great guitarists!"

1983 they released their second 7Inch 'Janis Would Say' and a live tape 'My Taylor Is Communist'. Kid Bravo then leaves the group for musical divergence and Tony, Kid's childhood friend, also leaves. Vlad recruits Miguel on drums thanks to a classified ad and Franck on guitar, originally from Toulouse. They rehearse near Nanterre with the Trotskids as neighbors. In 1986 the second LP 'Costa Del Dole' came out, and 1987 their last 'Yours Negatively', both on their new label Negative Records. Many concerts (over 200) followed and take them to Poland, Switzerland, Germany & Great Britain. Their last concert took place at the Cirque d'Hiver in 1989 with Bérurier Noir

Vlad wants to mount another formation to continue, so he contacts Fredéric from the Sub Kids, but he cannot. Guitarist of Richard III, Jean-Marc, with whom he is friends (a canceled concert with the Stiff Little Fingers), is not available either. Franck leaves for Toulouse, so the Brigades broke up in 1989. Miguel had already been playing with Dirty District for some time, hence the difficulty of finding dates with him and the other members for concerts. (source: 45vinylvidivici)

A nice review: "Much more rockin’ than their previous releases, the Brigades cut loose with powerful pop-punk. Their style is a cross between mid-period CLASH and ’80s Brit-punk, while their lyrics are unabashedly political. Driving, well-recorded Punkrock." (Tim Yohannan, MRR #36 • May 1986)

FUNERAL SERVICE - Pills 7'' 1986

Funeral Service was a five piece from Reims that initially did mostly covers and consisted of T. Wippler (vocals), D. Doche & A. Proust (guitars), M. Kaltenbach (bass), L. Hesnault (drums). Pills is their only vinyl and was released via Black Cat Fun and is a decent garagepunk number with catchy melodies and swinging rhythmI think, they would also feel at home with a place on the relevant compilations (you know which ones I mean) just a pity that no one discovered them. The flip is a nice cover version of the Undertones classic Teenage KicksAll in all a decent record, fresh tunes and I can listen to it anytime. - And in three hours I'll see what the SGE is doing in the second round of the DFB Cup.

NO PUB - Juste Un Peu De Bière EP 1997

No Pub was a French quartet from Blois and was active between 1981 and 1982 and consisted of Denis (vocals), Fonfon (guitars), Vava (bass), Eric (drums). This four track EP was released via Euthanasie Records in an edition of 1000 copies and the goodies are already appeared on the great Apocalypse Chaos compilation on Chaos Productions ('82) and as bonus, extra for this slab, is a live version of the title track included. Musically a solid Oi!/Punk cocktail as it is common in this league and thus gained attention/popularity. If I feel like and have time, I also look for the Sampler. And now a small cold beer 🍺

V/A - Rot In Hell 1984

Ei Di Weil, let's stay in an enjoyable mood and come to a compilation from my favorite British label Rot Records. In its short-lived tenure, they've released amazing records, including half a dozen compis, and to date none have disappointed me. On the one hand, this is due to bands that sent their demos there and can the songs therefore only be found there, and on the other hand to the unknown status of them. This healthy combination is daring and far from geared towards sales, also limited, I guess 1000 copies were pressed. Even Step-1 Music liked this stuff and re-released it on CD in 1996. A record deal then jumped out for some bands and became better known a little beyond their latitude. Rot In Hell is full with splendid music, as it should be for a little D.I.Y. label and you will like it.

STARSHOOTER - Ma Vie C'est Du Cinéma 7'' 1979

Little two-sided 7Inch on Pathé by Starshooter from Lyon, active at the end of the 70's and during the beginning of the 80's and made four albums and many 7Inches. Both tracks are from the Mode album with a short version of the title track (after disco). I don't have anything else to tell, I'm a bit tired and I'm retiring for today.

V/A - 1984 The Third 2LP 1987

One of my favorite compilations is the double album by the important French label New Wave Records, who released a small series called 1984 in the Eighties with tons of international bands and every release is a direct hit in my opinion. Also Freunde, Volume 3 was pressed 1500 times and there are thirty-eight bands/songs to discover, plus a detailed booklet with lots of infos and lyrics and and and... I love such loving and detailed slabs because they not only make an impact acoustically, but also visually and I'm certainly not alone there, and on days off like these, the pleasure is doubly pleasant. The only downside is that I have to write so much and don't like to write much. I've already thought about not writing anything anymore, but I don't like that either. What a conflict hahaha... Now I'll open a beer and the subtle reference to Volume 4 (the last part) and the first two will follow... someday!

2.Just Sixteen - DARK AGE

LES SCALPERS - It's Too Late EP 1988

Debut EP by the Scalpers, a French three piece, Henri (vocals/guitars), Gerard (bass) & Henri (drums), who recorded four rockin' songs and released them on their own label Skalpz Records. In their short life span they released three albums before disbanding in 1992. I find the use of the harmonica particularly successful and gives the impression that the three are very fond of early American Rock&Roll and I have to say that the sound fits their music perfectly. I like this time as well and I like this instrument. Driving nice melodies have they wrote and overall an enjoyable record.

WARRIOR KIDS - Adolescent 7'' 1983

Einer geht heute noch and we travel southwest to the Mediterranean Sea and meet an Oi!/Punk combo there: Warrior KidsFormed in Marseille 1982 by Marc (vocals/bass), Thierry (guitar/vocals), René (drums) and after a few rehearsals in August 1983 they go to Hirondelle Studios near Montpellier to record two tracks in two days. It's thanks to the boss of the Punk clothing store "Fa7" who gives them money to help them out. The 45rpm Adolescent/Forces De L'ordre was printed in 1000 copies and was published in early January. The cover photo is taken behind the Plaine district in Marseille and soon they will appear for a concert in Aix. The group stops for damn military service but however, they found time to record their debut for the 77KK label at the Auris studios in Marseille in September 1985, which already included the track 'Ville Morte' for the 77KK label compilation. The album Les Enfants De L'Espoir... was distributed by New Rose and released in 1986 when they returned from the army. Thierry left the band and the group stopped giving gigs and disbanded.

In 1993 they came back with Pierrot as new guitarist and a new 7Inch Don't Tell Me Lie was released and they gave a furious concert at the Haunted House. After another hiatus they came back at the beginning of the millennium and finally set their way through and with Marc at the helm of the trio the Warriors Kids have produced more than ten albums and recorded many of their concerts which they have performed in USA and Canada as well as in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland & Spain. Enjoy two delicious stomper!

EXTRABALLE - s/t 12'' 1978

Four piece from Paris with their debut record on Flamingo. Extrabelle were formed in 1978 by J.R (vocals/guitar), Lolita (guitars), Olivier (bass), Michel (drums) and was "created by energy, thru' energy, for energy. And the name really means that you always have a second chance, there's always a second take... on things, Life, etc... you shoot again, because there are no limits except the ones of your own decay that can stop you." They offer four high-speed refried Punk-A-Boogie with hot axework and little else. There’s potent high-energy accompaniment with lots of organ and guitar vying for domination of the serviceable tunes. Altogether they released three albums, some 7Inches and in the early 80's they're history.

LA FRACTION - s/t LP 1996

After their famous Guerre D'esperance EP the Paris based four piece La Fraction, founded 1992 by Magali (vocals), Dédé (guitars), Thierry (bass), Boris (drums), released their amazing debut album two years later on DeCrash Disques with eleven melodic, dynamic and swinging pieces. Tuneful and passionate with a female vocalist like no other. Seasoned with political & poetical lyricsSpeaking up for the dispossessed, La Fraction carries France's most exhilarating voice of discontent. - I know I have the vinyl, but unfortunately I didn't scan the insert at the time, and damn it, I can't find the fucking record! Hmmm.... I'll keep searchin' again and catch up on the work if I can find it. - It's been sixteen years since the Parisians last released an album and I reckon they've broken up by now. A Must listen!

LES VERMINES - Bad Childhood 1983

Now to a combo that already appeared sporadically in wdthtc on some compilations: Les Vermines from Rouen, active around 1980-1989. Line-up: White Spirit (vocals), Torchon (guitar), Ted (bass), Daniel (drums) and this is their amazing debut on Rive Gauche Records. Bad Childhood is peppered with eleven superb candy canes. Info: To history and purists, punk has only lasted for a season. In 1977, the death knell had already sounded. This did not prevent the Vermines from continuing the adventure in the 80s with two albums in their own juice worthy of the best English productions of the good era. Adopting the language of the Queen of England, the group doesn't seem to care about this detail of the story and rushes headlong into a punk à la Sex Pistols and Ramones from which they also cover the title Blitzkrieg Bop and Warhead by the UK Subs on this album. The Rouen scene can be proud of these boys and you can convince yourself by the excellent songwriting and the amazingly good quality of these fourRecorded & mixed in twenty-two hours during summer 1983. They left two albums, a 7Inch and a tape for posterity, plus some compilation appearances. Brilliant debut in every way!

V/A - Bloodstains Across The World #6 2019

Oh Yeah, the last across the world Bloodstains to date and how we can move into the mood for the weekend more splendidly?... right, drinking with good friends, telling stories and hang out. There are supposed to be 100 copies and like the previous ones, #6 was created by the same detective. All songs are at least decent and some have already appeared on other compilations. What bothers me a little is the poor loveless artwork, very cheap card sleeve and no info about the bands except year of release and their country of origin... but enough grumbling. I have to hurry to catch the train and two beautiful days lie ahead with lots of Backgammon, beer, music and Happi Happi, Cheers!

V/A - Powerpearls Vol.1 1998

🎸 In spring, I wowed you (and me) with another great collector series that some detectives created in the late 90s and this beauty focuses on PowerPop rather than Punk though a few goodies featured wouldn't be out of place on a Punk compilation; We're talking about the Powerpearls Explosion and each Volume has a healthy serving of the best from this genre (those were Hans Knut Hohlhand's words, an avowed four chord lover whose inspiration brought many hermits together to form great bands). Decent selection for the first part in my opinion and the eighteen time travelers shoot you into the weekend, and I'm sure that even the annoying corona virus will shrink back on this foamy wave and shut up for a while. 🎸

1.Everyday, Everyway - REALLY 3RD'S
2.One Out All Out - STRAIGHT UP
3.Feel The Pain - THE BUREAUCRATS
4.Language School - TOURS

OBERKAMPF - P.L.C. 1983

Debut album by Oberkampf and given the group's influence on the local scene, the release was significant and the sound conceived in this way was vehemently continued as on their first Couleurs Sur Paris (1981). Also, Kebra and his cronies, including Joe Hell, have a good taste not to stick to simple Punkrock, they go straight ahead. “Wild” choirs, unbridled but controlled instrumentation, rhythmic which scrapes without deviating; Oberkampf has real strengths. The texts, moreover, could still, even in our time, give new food for thought. The impact is therefore only greater, they have verve. Their sound is jerky and experimental with sound effects, almost post-punk, maybe a bit cold too, and they finished the job (back then it was a struggle to get a record out, but the band didn't want to stop at anyone or anything), and that with amazing consistency. Solid record with ten songs plus a rather uninteresting Gainsbourg cover.

V/A - Beautiful Music For Beautiful People 10'' 1990

A tasty 10Inch compilation from Amity Records which was released in seven versions. Ten bands from every corner of the world show their skills to the best and their sound varies from solid punk pieces with a slight metallic hardcore touch. Some of them are well-known and some of the rest are only here. Comes with a decent booklet that is unfortunately missing, anyone useful scans for me? In short, thirty minutes of interesting music whose time you can take without regrets.

3.Too Many People - SCOUNDRELS
4.Alla Kan Lyckas - 16 BLASARE UTAN HJARNA
