V/A - P.E.A.C.E. Compilation 2LP 1984

I don't think this excellent release in form of a double record set can be more topical, and as we all have to realize, mankind hasn't gotten any wiser even after almost forty years. There is always some aggressor somewhere who expresses its sick ideology with lies and blind helpers and it is appalling that no diplomacy, no system, and no sensible compromise can prevent a violent confrontationPathetic, disappointing & lifeless all the pursuit of power and heroism. About the record: "This massive international Hardcore/Punk compilation features fifty-five bands/songs and was organized and released by the infamous MDC on the band's own label R Radical Records. The worldwide hardcore scene was at its peak at this point, still underground enough to repel corrupting outside influences like major labels and heavy metal, but already hardened into a rigid aesthetic and political dogma that often encouraged groupthink and musical conformity. P.E.A.C.E. documents the state of "Reagan-era" Hardcore, just before the popularity of extreme music spread through decidedly non-radical camps and into the mainstream. Among the fifty-five bands on board are well-known plus the best tracks by courtesy of obscure groups of the local scenes from Argentina, South Africa to Japan. Most of the bands included retain, either through design or some bizarre quirk of ineptitude, a stamp of individuality on their sound that makes this an entertaining collection.

An extensive booklet insert is packed with political rants, cartoons, and suggestions for further reading, making explicit the double-LP's theme of activism and action against a corrupt authority. Plus, each band is provided with a full page to express their ideas (and plug their wares) with printed lyrics and crudely effective collage art. Reissued on CD in 1997 by New Red Archives with bonus cuts." (Fred Beldin) - A real highlight of an international gathering that shows how it can work.

So that are no gaps here, now the missing piece of the puzzle of the essential compilation series from Incognito/Insekten Records headquarters: Back To Front; Means many rare unsung heroes who created fantastic music & colorful subcultures in the early wild years 1977-1982 worldwide and vehement flouted the dusty degenerate biblehousesocietynorms. Twenty-three brilliant examples prove once again that the music is different and the spirit is more alive than today. Mostly good stuff on this Volume and 1000 copies exist.

ROCKS - Final Assault 12'' 1988

Bill (vocals/guitars), Peter (bass), Nasser (drums), better known as Rocks which formed in Sydney 1976 and this is their last 80s output on Waterfront Records with four decent numbers. Rocks broke up in June 1978. The band has reunited several times since with different drummers and this 12Inch is the product during this period. This line-up recorded two years later the cool Combat Zone album and since then they've been touring here and there and their last release is twenty years ago, a split EP with San Francisco buddies the Loudmouths from 2000 on 702 Records, featuring two songs by each band. That's it for now, let's see if I'll take a look again today. Weather is sunny, beer is cold, mood is brilliant and Bundesliga is tomorrow, chances are good & remember: "In the end everything will be fine. If it doesn't turn out well, it's not the end yet." Cheers!

THE KELPIES - Official Bootleg 1986

It's time to pay tribute to another favorite band of mine that set high musically standards, but unfortunately they were only two years active and released far too little. So this damn rare fucker came via Aberrant Records and 507 copies of this superb slab exist. Fourteen goodies in a very good sound quality and I love their raw and pure personality. Excellent liner notes which I would like to quote: "During their brief existence, beginning March 1981, the Kelpies produced some of the best, wildest and most memorable gigs seen in Sydney, developing a knack of being banned from venues as quickly as they packed the out. Combined with internal personal problems, this eventually led to their demise in August 1982, with only one single on Phantom Records and three tracks on the first Aberrant compilation Flowers Of The Dustbin. This tape, released with permission of the band, was recorded sometime in 1981 during a rehearsal in the mattressed basement of 51 Stanley Street, Darlinghurst, also known as The Dungeon Tapes. Its release it to make available the classic material that should have been an album for a band that could have had the world." The Kelpies: James (vocals), Brian & Mark (guitars), Con (bass), Ashley (drums), were (and still are) a real highlight of Australian underground musicA Must Listen!

THE THOUGHT CRIMINALS - Edge Of Time 7'' 1980

The Thought Criminals formed in 1977 and were one of those unique bands whose popularity was based on their quirkiness as well as having great songs. Emerging from Sydney in late 1977 they found themselves wrapped up in the burgeoning Punkrock scene and over the course of three years recorded a handful of albums, singles and EPs on their own Doublethink label, a true representation of the Australian D.I.Y. punk spirit of the times. On their third 7Inch are involved Bruce (vocals), Stephen (guitars), Roger (bass), Derik (drums) plus Richard (violin) & John (organ) and it's more a new wave goodie with two decent songs (also suitable for wimps) and how they sound as snotty punkrockers can you check on some compilations or visit Mr. Old Wanker & Friends. In late 1981 the band played a live show at Chequers, after which the Thought Criminals disbanded.

THE CREDITS - It's You 7'' 1979

Very rare 7Inch by the Credits from Brisbane and it was pressed in a limited edition of only 200 copies in 1979 via Thunder Productions. The band was a short-lived project of Jim (vocals/bass), Greg (guitars), Bruce (drums) who were previously active in the combo The Survivorswhich attained cult status in Australia by their acknowledged popular live performances and contribution to the Lethal Weapons compilation. They were legends in their home town of Brisbane, a highly popular and adept band whose sets were mainly cool ’60s covers." Here we have two great songs, 'It's You' is a cover version of an Aussie 60s rave-up hit by Terry Dean and the flip is also worth listening. Apart from that, the three didn't appear much under the Credits, we don't even need to talk about compilation appearances.

V/A - Planet Punk #4 2005

Second and last part of Planet Punk and with Volume 3, this little self-made series is already complete. H2D#26 is another tidbit full of rare stars from international bands that are still kicking ass, much in demand and popular in our fucking disillusioned times which bring little decent music to light in my opinion. Music is like inventions, there is nothing innovative that can really impress me, hardly any wow factor or thing that I can really admire. And I would say that for almost twenty years. Speaking of music, we all hear & see the so called "combos" thrown together, the TV shows which offer only shit and are played over and over by radio stations, all this crap is boring, repetitive and only geared towards profit, commercial shit and really sucks. It's really intoxicating to get acquainted with such music as on this further fantastic compilation and to eke out an existence far away from this dead & dull society. That are the words for Sunday, Amen! Enjoy the vibes of the good ole days!

THE SPORTS - Who Listens To The Radio 7'' 1979

Not really Punk stuff but the following combo has brought a lot to vinyl in its five-year life, and this very successfully. The Sports were from Melbourne and performed, recorded between 1976 and 1981. Mainstay members were Stephen on lead vocals and Robert (bass), with long-term members such as Paul (drums) and Andrew (lead guitar) and Martin (guitar). Their style was similar to both 1970s British pub rock bands and British new wave. The original single was released on Mushroom in October 1978 and shortly thereafter reworked and re-recorded and as new lead 7Inch from the band's second album, Don't Throw Stones (1979), again released with another flip. Two simple but well crafted pop songs.

V/A - Bloodstains Across The World #6 2019

Oh Yeah, the last across the world Bloodstains to date and how we can move into the mood for the weekend more splendidly?... right, drinking with good friends, telling stories and hang out. There are supposed to be 100 copies and like the previous ones, #6 was created by the same detective. All songs are at least decent and some have already appeared on other compilations. What bothers me a little is the poor loveless artwork, very cheap card sleeve and no info about the bands except year of release and their country of origin... but enough grumbling. I have to hurry to catch the train and two beautiful days lie ahead with lots of Backgammon, beer, music and Happi Happi, Cheers!

V/A - Killed By Death #666 1998

Last post in 2021 and the conclusion on wdthtc I want to end with a another great collection of early and unusual European, North American and Australian Punk rarities! Nice job once again have the detectives done and including some relatively unknown obscurities to make those Killed By Death only collectors scurry a little more. There are a few "arty" tracks thrown in here that fits the album right in. A decidedly tasteful international flavor here of some of the most fucked music ever made. Sharpen your silly little pencils cause what's left you're gonna have to add to your want list. So rare you gotta wonder if they were ever made! Overall this is a fuckin' great record, especially this late in the compilation game, worth listening to a few times a year. A total of Nineteen rare nuggets, for you, for me. Take care of yourself and I wish you all a happy fuckin' new year!

V/A - Beautiful Music For Beautiful People 10'' 1990

A tasty 10Inch compilation from Amity Records which was released in seven versions. Ten bands from every corner of the world show their skills to the best and their sound varies from solid punk pieces with a slight metallic hardcore touch. Some of them are well-known and some of the rest are only here. Comes with a decent booklet that is unfortunately missing, anyone useful scans for me? In short, thirty minutes of interesting music whose time you can take without regrets.

DEAD CAN DANCE - Mosaic 2013

We remain gloomy and floating and come to a bootleg that is disappointing in every way and Mosaic is announced as early demos, but what you get here are Peel Sessions from Dead Can Dance and demos of poor quality. "First the tracklist is completely wrong, many of the songs listed are not on this release and a better buy would the The Garden Of The Arcane Delights re-issue that has all of the Peel Sessions in immaculate quality. The Inner Life and untitled tracks are in rough shape, and in all honesty the versions out on youtube sound better", so a discogs user quoted and I agree, not even the title song is included on this compilation and the artwork is just as poor and unimaginative (I recommend to listen to the debut first). Responsible for this is the Belgian label Arkain Filloux who are certainly known to one or the other, but what they have done with Mosaic is a real Fiasco. I like bootlegs and they are usually not perfect, but I expect more than such a loveless, jaded record. Anyone thinking of buying should definitely listen beforehand, only hard/lost/souls will spend their money for shit. 2 points out of 10!

HOODOO GURUS - Stoneage Romeos 1984

Today two new bands that say zero to me and I'm always grateful for that. It starts by a well-known band from Down Under who got a pretty positive response. Hoodoo Gurus were formed in Sydney 1981, by the mainstay Dave Faulkner (vocals/guitars) and later joined by Richard (bass), Mark (drums), and Brad (guitar/harmonica) and they recorded their debut in 1984 and the title came from a 1955 Three Stooges short Stone Age Romeos and was awarded 'Best Debut Album' of 1984 at the July 1985 Countdown Music Awards. When Stoneage Romeos was released in America it stayed at #1 in the Alternative/College charts for seven weeks, becoming one of the most played albums for the year on the college network. Initially a cult inner-city act, their popularity expanded due to regular airplay on radio station Triple J and nationwide pop TV show Countdown from mid-1983. Their breakthrough single "My Girl" was accompanied by a video clip featuring a dog trainer with his once champion greyhound. Members of Spiderbait described seeing the video for the first time as "a beautiful, classic pop song". Some viewers insisted the song was "written about a dog". This was closely followed by "I Want You Back", which featured animated plastic model dinosaurs. Both videos were aired frequently raising the group's profile around the country. The band made seven albums until they finally took a break in 1997 and since 2003 they've been back and making concerts and records. The Hoodoo Gurus' were inducted into the Australia's 2007 ARIA Hall Of Fame. The band's induction announcement stated that the Gurus were one of the most "inventive, lyrically smart and exciting" bands from Australia. From 1960s power pop and garage punk to hard rock and funky psychedelic kitsch, the group's music stood out from Sydney's Detroit-inspired bands.

THE RATS - Liar 7'' 1998

HOLY SHIT! can I only say what the three from Perth deliver here. The Rats with their debut record and they founded in the late nineties by Donny (vocals/guitar), Matt (bass), Frankie (drums) and this two-sided killer 7Inch came out via Empty Records. I bought this slab for little money on a record fair and I'm still excited today by its dirty '77 style blast piss off sound which is driving and maybe a bit monotonous because the songs only offer a few chords, but that's exactly what makes this music addictive, for me at leastFor their short lifespan (dissolved in 2001) they have released quite a bit, two albums and three singles. So if you like simple, no-frills punk, you can't ignore this band and there weren't many of them in the nineties. TOP!

NEWS - Dirty Secrets EP 1978

Today are the first two quarter-finals and I'm already excited about the games and I hope they promise as much tension and drama as the round of 16. And all on a Friday, perfect! But first a killer record by the News from Melbourne and this is their ultra rare second one and it's a limted edition with a newspaper clippings on band. Bringing some healthy publicity for the reformed News, there was new vinyl imminent. Gavin had assisted Bruce Milne with 'The History of News', a double 7Inch pack. One is (at last!) the Pulp Flexi, the other a regular reissue of 'Dowannalove' and 'Hate' from the Babeez EP. Gavin's work was on the cover, which included dozens of press clippings on the band. Don't miss the Dirty Lies 7'' and feel the enthusiasm sound of this extraordinary combo.

DIVISION 4 - On The Beat EP 1982

Another fund of my hard drive and this month is definitely the one with the most posts of this genre. 100% mod/powerpop from Sydney by Division 4. A short info: Brothers Kieren and Brad Fitzpatrick were playing in a local punk band in 1979 when they placed an ad looking for a drummer on a noticeboard at the University of NSW. Joe Genua responded, and brought with him bass player Antony Howell Smith III. Division 4 (named after the classic Aussie cop show of the early 1970s) seized on the burgeoning mod revival movement, swiftly building a strong inner-city following in Sydney. Their only legacy is this rare three track EP but an important light in the sky of this genre and came out on their own label. The band split up in 1984. Maintained on two cool compilations, Sound Of Sydney Vol.1 & Powerpearls #5Please send the first, thx (it's been dealt with).

MEN AT WORK - Cargo 1983

Unfortunately yesterday it didn't work out with a success in the Bayer Arena and now it's getting tight again for the SGE. Well, let's wait and see. Now to today's post; and a band which I love listen to, then and still today, and Cargo is the second studio album by Men At Work and it had been finished in mid-1982, but was held back due to the success of their debut on the international market, because Business As Usual was still riding high. Even if the criticisms are rather moderate, this slab is worth listening, with its excellent single releases, which were played up and down at the time, and can seamlessly keep up with the previous one in my opinion. There are enough reviews to read on the web, but make your own picture of this very good rockpop record, the last interesting work of this combo from Melbourne.

NEWS - Dirty Lies 7'' 1978

Modest little 7inch from Down Under now: Formed in Melbourne by Gavin (vocals), Jaryl (guitars), Joy (bass) and John (drums) as Babeez but quickly changed into News, they had always been a non-image band, playing in jeans, T-shirts and leather jackets. On their side was a healthy cynicism about punk itself, especially when rock & roll success and fashionable interests encroached on the revolution. This is their first record I think, self-released and most with one-sided lyric insert. The sleeves were hand screened by the band using black and fluoro yellow ink on cheap inner bags with the record inside. Two awesome killer tunes!

ROCKS - Combat Zone 1994

Only album by Rocks on Kangaroo Records and it took a long time for the band to become active again. In 1978 they brought their legendary You'r So Boring EP on Point Blank Records (500 copies) out and and set with that an astonishing exclamation point, 1995 re-issued as CD with bonus tracksI first came in contact with them through Tepid Spit Artists, an unofficial tape compilation what I acquired from Incognito Records. Short basics: "Rocks, please, never put a “The” in front, were Sydney based Punx which started its life as a three piece in 1976 with childhood friends Bill Webb (a.k.a. Bill Posters) Drums/Lead Vocals, Peter Davie Guitar/Vocals and Steve Vanderschoot Bass/Lead Vocals. Having jammed together after school and on weekends and with their love for early 70’s rock surging through their veins, it was no surprise they would turn to Punk as they forged ahead finding a style to become a band. When bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols came along, it was obvious what they had become and they would go on to be one of Sydney’s best loved Punkrock bands..." Combat Zone is twenty-two times fresh sound combined with catchy melodies. Rocks are still active and occur at irregular intervals here and there somewhere. Enjoy the album & the warm rays of the sun with a cold beer.

DEAD CAN DANCE - s/t LP 1984

Today to a band that I appreciate very much and always enjoy playing: Dead Can Dance, formed 1981 in Melbourne by Brendan Perry (The Scavengers/The Marching Girls) & Lisa Gerrard. Excllent info from their 4AD label for you: "Their music began as collages made from musical lineages, lost tribes and cultures long since forgotten - and by giving new life to so much from the past, they created a genuinely timeless body of work. They shared vocal responsibilities, and while Perry was certainly capable of haunting subtleties and real sonority as a singer, it was more often Gerrard's rhapsodic vocalising that drew the attention of critics and fans. In a sense, Gerrard didn't simply sing for Dead Can Dance: she made sounds with her voice, and turned that experience into something much larger and more far-ranging than mere singing. Perry's soundscapes blur distinctions between organic and sampled, old and new, drawing on disparate traditions (neo–classical, choral, baroque, troubadour) and weaving together influences from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North Africa, the Mediterranean and beyond..." I was lucky to see this fantastic band live in the old opera house in Frankfurt and the almost three-hour performance is one of the best I've ever seen live. With around twenty artists on stage and the appropriate equipment, they filled the hall with their spherical music and sent you into other worlds, far away from reality and I can tell you, my pearl and I are went home very impressed & flashed. "...having finally secured their contract in 1983, it wasn't until March the following year that 4AD released their eponymous first album, a collection of the songs they had written over the previous four years. Also 1984 they released a 12'' "Garden Of The Arcane Delights" which is included here as bonus." Though the band split in 1998, they reformed briefly for a world tour in 2005. In winter 2011, they reunited once again to record a new album and completed a world tour promoting its release in 2012 and they're still alive. I recommend you get to know this band, no matter what album you start with, there is no bad one.
