V/A - Vertigo - Synth Punk Blasts 1978-1984 [2020]

When I took notice of this record I bought it immediately, on the one hand because the song selection is great, the time of release, the bands (more than 50% unknown) and I love international stuff, and then limited, so damn... why waiting?? Info: Vertigo is a compilation of SynthPunk, mainly from little known bands. This first volume will be available (vinyl only, limited to 300 copies) on December 15th, features American, German, British & Swedish bands. The term SynthPunk has been popularized in recent years, or rather vulgarized, becoming a genre that mostly describes electronic or new wave bands. This compilation highlights anger and nihilism punk with the violent rhythm of a fingering that assails a keyboard. Here, no synth pop, no new wave, no experimental music. This could be the sequel to the Killed By Synth compilation which is also led by raw razor shape synthesizers.

brilliant review: "Well, first things first: compared to the unrelated but similarly-themed Killed by Synth comp. that preceded it, this new comp at least succeeds in only including bands that actually used keyboards, so no BIG BOYS, OIL TASTERS, or BOB this time around. In true KBD tradition, the focus here is on the the flipped-out and the fucked-up in the words of the compiler(s), “no synth pop, no new wave, no experimental music” and despite (presumably) being named after the SCREAMERS song, Vertigo skips over the usual synth-punk suspects in favor of some deeper and less obvious cuts. Highlights include the Bloodstains-via-Red Snerts snot of “Sophistication” by PLASTIC IDOLS (Houston’s answer to DOW JONES & THE INDUSTRIALS), organ-smeared mutant new wave with wild femme vocals from Santa Cruz’s SCHEMATIX on “Nothing Special,” the dark, frenetic end-times robo-pulse of “Happy Funeral” by Sweden’s KITCHEN & THE PLASTIC SPOONS, the jarring juxtaposition of sparse minimal wave and intense, unhinged vocals in German from DER KÜNFTIGE MUSIKANT’s “Es Ist Kalt”… also, totally bold move with the inclusion of “Food Fight” by the VILLAGE PEOPLE (yes, really) in the post-disco early ’80s, they revamped their image to pass as New Romantics and recorded this one-off, utterly dumb but kind of amazing slice of PLASTIC BERTRAND esque punksploitation with the former “construction worker” channeling his inner Tomata Du Plenty, now officially enshrined as the first dollar bin KBD bonzer. Not a predictable comp by any means, and that’s very much to its credit. (Erika Elizabeth, MRR #454 • March 2021)

FEINBEIN - Feinbein's Psychoshow 1983

Well, I had imagined the long weekend off differently, but the new equipment is driving me crazy and I have to find a solution quickly, otherwise I'll run amok. Irrespective of that, I come to the next post and we meet the local heroes from Hanau called Feinbein with their second album with ten rocking numbers are adorned with sophisticated lyrics and they may sound funny sometimes, but they shine with a healthy portion of sarcasm with criticism of different kinds of social conditions. All seven are also very talented musically and I recommend the third album, Schräge Vögel for further samples. A small contribution to Hessian music culture, also suitable for HardcorePunks. Breakfast now!

OPPSLUTNING - Demos 1981-1982 [2010]

This interesting record is the demo recording from January 1982 by Oppslutning from Stavanger and it comes out at the beginning of the same year as self-released tape I guess. The band was formed of two disbanded bands Kortslutning and Oppspist (hence the name) and consisted of Jan (vocals), Erik (guitars), Otto (bass), Jone (drums) and didn't create anything on vinyl during their active time. Stavanger-Mandal International Records has remastered the piece and put fourteen cute chocolates on it, provided with a DIN-A insert (but only in Norwegian) and thus conjured up a worthy album of the four. Came in an edition of 300 hand numbered copies. Oppslutning have appeared on almost every Hurra For Norge compilation, Svindel Records' superb series released in the early 2000's. The sound is a bit old & simple and crackles almost monotonously, but the mastering of the moderate Oi!/Punk goodies was it worth and after twenty minutes the last groove is played.

V/A - Clay Records Punk Singles Collection 1996

Well, Christmas is just around the corner and you might know this is not my time and I'm just only enjoying the days off before going back to servitude on Tuesday. But first we relax and the freedom kicks off with Receiver Records, who released this little compilation by the Clay Records label and this Punk Singles Collection "captures some of the prime material released on one of the most important labels in Britain's transition from Punk to Hardcore. The collection is naturally dominated by Discharge, who have eight of the twenty-two songs here; there are also multiple selections from G.B.H, the Abrasive Wheels, and the Lurkers, plus one track apiece by the Killjoys and future goth mainstays the Sex Gang Children. While it might be better for some fans to simply pick up compilations by the individual artists for a more detailed look, this will serve those who simply want a more concise overview." (Steve Huey) - Now you know what to expect: rough, trashy, and urgent sound, that pleases even the innocent Christ Child. 💀

THE CORTINAS - Defiant Pose (Singles & Demos 1977-1978)

Uhhhh... fantastic release on Radiation Reissues and I promise, this record saves every fucking day. What's inside: "Bristol Punk quintet the Cortinas began as an R&B covers band, but soon sped up their repertoire when punk arrived, making them local pioneers. A slot supporting the Stranglers at the Roxy brought them onto Miles Copeland and Mark Perry’s Step Forward label and they later signed to CBS before imploding, guitarist Nick Sheppard then joining the Clash and drummer Daniel Swann San Francisco’s the Sneeches. This ace compilation gathers the best of their early work, including the immortal debut Fascist Dictator/Defiant Pose, as well as ‘TV Personalities', both in the studio and live. Another crucial piece of the Bristol puzzle." A limited edition of 100 copies comes in yellow vinyl. Great Music!

SUB KIDS - Kids Of Glory 7'' 1983

The Sub Kids were formed in 1978 from the ashes of the Spiders, a group created at the end of 1976 at Grande Synthe just next to Dunkirk, around Fred Rok (13) on vocals/bass, and his brother "Scum" (15 years) on guitar/vocals, André "Ded" Leprince (drums) and a certain Bruno on vocals. England is very close, pirate radios and BBC programs arrive in homes, making all the Punk groups and Pubrock of the moment heard. The Spiders split up, Fred took the guitar and formed the Suburban Kids in 1978 with François "Steve Matchbox" Hyart on bass, Matthieu on drums and Frederic aka "Bubu or Freddy Dustbin" on vocals and then on drums. They open for Les Boys in Dunkirk on January 21, 1978. Scum on rhythm guitar joined the group before leaving for the army in April 1979. On October 27, 1979, they were on stage at the Palais du Littoral Grande Synthe during the Côte d'Opale festival, with Electrons, Identity and After Death, and another at the MJC in Boulogne. They participated in "Live in Dunkerque" on April 18, 1980 with Marnalau Chris, Lead and Bass and Dunedozer at the Coudekerque Branche convention hall, then the Golf Drouot in Paris on January 16, 1981 where they finished third behind Louis XIV and Blitz. February 81, Fred leaves for military service and it is his returned brother Scum who takes the lead. The name is shortened to Sub Kids. The Outcasts are invited to Grande Synthe on May 22, 1981 by the Sub Kids who are opening for them. Matthieu Converty leaves (we will find him in the Butter Cookies) and he is replaced by Bubu, as well as his brother Stéphane who arrives in 1982, which makes two drummers for the formation at that time, like their favorite group Outcasts. The group is going to see the Outcasts again in concert in Paris at the Gibus in December 1982 so that the Irish come again to Dunkirk, which will also be done with the Rats on the bill on January 16. Their first single "Kids Of Glory" was released in early 1983 on the service provider Aaltrack. The latter has a studio in an old converted farmhouse near Ghent. Apart from the Belgian groups, many French will record there, like Rosenthal, the SS Kids, Identity, Electronaze or the Scraps.

The same year, they are on the compilation Chaos En France Vol.1 with the title “Against The Law”. The second EP Boots On Cars was released in 1984, still on Aaltrack. Stéphane leaves the group. The previously unreleased "Don't Be The First" is featured on the New Wave Record compilation 1984 - The First Sonic World War. They also take care of an association, "Sur Les Docks", with the publication of a fanzine of the same name. Fred leaves the group definitively in July 1985 to explore other musical horizons. The Sub Kids continues for a while, a few dates with the Gibus again with the Outcasts, in Reims at the Salle MJC Claudel on March 23, 1985 with Vaterland and at the same place one of their last appearance with the Brigades on October 20, 1986. They stopped definitively in 1987. Fact is, that this group since its beginning 1977, confirms the fact that it is one of the first seminal Punk groups in France, and which is not from Paris. A nine track compilation was released by Negative Records in 1988, followed by the Vinyl Songs CD in 2004 with unreleased tracks and live material. (source: 45vinylvidivici)

MURDER THE DISTURBED - Genetic Disruption EP 1979

Really nothing new in Blogland but on the fly this record was pulled by the magic fairy. Murder The Disturbed was formed in Concord, Sunderland by John (vocals), Steve (guitars), Chris (bass), Gonzo (drums) and were signed to the short-lived, London-based Small Wonder Records who eventually released their only 7inch with three songs. They have been playing at youth clubs and after a few line-up changes, the band broke up in the early eighties. In 2013 the long awaited album Further Disruption was finally released on MTD with songs from the EP plus ten others. Guest on some compilations and still active as far as I know.

THE 1980'S - 3'rd Kind Rock 7'' 1980

One of the best World Cup finals I've ever seen was on yesterday and I won't go into detail about it, I just almost missed my train, anyway... it was worth every minute. But back to shitty Monday which was horrible once again and therefore sweet music to calm down a bit. In Bremen at home are the 1980's and the trio consisted of Jet (vocals/guitars), J.Pop (bass), Knox (drums) and in their two-year lifespan they managed one 7Inch, probably on their own label Kandikorn-Record (it looks very D.I.Y.) and we enjoy two passable New Wave goodies, very charming and somehow cute. Other musical activities are present on some tape compilations that are out of my league. Now a cigarette, a beer and life becomes a little more pleasant.

V/A - BG Hronika Vol.1 [Tape] 1990

Today a compilation from U.P.C. which features mainly unknown bands from the former Yugoslavia and this is the first volume of three. Focus is on decent Hardcore & Punk and the quality is acceptable. Posted by me many many years ago when I was still a comrade-in-arms at DU and started my blogger life. Well, and now this grandiose cassette is being revived and the second part will of course follow shortly. There are very less of the combos on vinyl, which may be due to the few labels in the country and the short lifespan of the bands, as it is certainly not easy to establish oneself as a Punkband in the early Nineties and tapes were and are a cheap option to reach a broader audience. Ten of them are waiting for you to dance, so join them.... and later the final of the soccer World Cup 2022. Cheers!
