THE STRANGLERS - The Great Lost Stranglers Album 1983

Fresh on the table and an excellent August finish with a real rarity and this interesting piece of vinyl is a Japan only compilation of non-album tracks, released via Liberty, by the Stranglers. Fourteen songs that underline their versatility, sometimes punk, sometimes poppy, but always unmistakably their sound with which they have earned a positive reputation worldwide and always remained true to themselves. Although they rose to fame during the initial explosion of UK punk, the Stranglers always stood apart from the other bands from the class of 1977. They had been together before punk became the "next big thing", and while they had a great talent for being suitably rude and transgressive, their music didn't sound or feel much like the fast-loud guitar-based fury of the well-known bands at that time. The Stranglers from Guildford are an integral part of the scene and belong in every well-stocked record collection and this slab is definitely one of them, even if difficult to obtain.

THE STRANGLERS - s/t EP 1977

I'm lazy to write today and so I pack something world-famous in wdthtc with the Stranglers, an English rock band who emerged via the punk rock scene and are one of the longest-surviving bands to have originated in the UK punk scene. Formed as the Guildford Stranglers in Guildford, Surrey early 1974, they originally built a following within the mid-1970s pub rock scene. While their aggressive, no-compromise attitude had them identified by the media with the emerging UK punk rock scene that followed, their idiosyncratic approach rarely followed any single musical genre, and the group went on to explore a variety of musical styles, from new wave, art rock and gothic rock through the sophisti-pop of some of their 1980s output. This EP has four brilliant songs and that's a short background, enough on the net about the gentlemen.

THE CORTINAS - Defiant Pose 7'' 1977

Bristol's first punk band, the Cortinas, formed in March 1976 when Jeremy Valentine (vocals), Nick Sheppard (guitar), Mike Fewins (guitar), Dexter Dalwood (bass) and Daniel Swan were still at school. "Jer put the band together, he definitely had a vision of what he wanted; he was very hip - Dexter & Mike went to the same school as him" remember Nick. "He found me via Mark Stewart, who I went to school with, and I brought Dan in; we had played in a band together before. We used to practise at the back of Jer's Dad's shop". The Cortinas soon built up a big local following, and a break came when the band supported the Stranglers at the fabled Roxy Club in Covent Garden on 22 January 1977. Nick recalls how it came to be: "Hugh Cornwell was staying at a friend of his' flat near the university, on holiday, and me and my girlfriend met him in the street. This would have been in the summer of 76. We started talking to him because we recognized him from seeing The Stranglers and hung out for the afternoon. I told him about the band. Later on, in January 77, he sent us a postcard asking us to play at the Roxy, so we rang up and said yes! I remember my mum telling me not to be too disappointed if people didn't like us...". Things then moved quickly for the band. Miles Copeland and Mark Perry's Step Forward label released the classic singles 'Fascist Dictator' in June and 'Defiant Pose' in December, the band recorded a fine Peel session, and they appeared on the front cover of the April/May issue of Sniffin' Glue. Heady stuff, but sadly, it was over all too soon. The following year, after a poorly received album, the band were no more, but in 1977 they were unstoppable - simply one of the best first wave punk bands around.

THE DRONES - Further Temptations 1977

Back to classics with the Drones, started out in the Manchester area in 1974 as a Glam Rock outfit called Rockslide, releasing a lone single 'Jump Bump Boogaloo/Roller Coaster' in October 1975, before reinvented themselves as a punk rock band the following year. The Drones then relocated to London and became one of the pioneering punk bands that performed in the first few months of the now-legendary Roxy Club. They supported The Vibrators in January 1977, headlined in February, and supported X-Ray Spex and Chelsea in March. Later that year they supported the Stranglers on a full UK tour, and appeared on two influential early punk compilation albums Streets and Short Circuit: Live at the Electric Circus. Their debut single, 'Temptations Of A White Collar Worker' (1977), was described by one reviewer as "classic dole-queue punk." In October 1977, their second single, 'Just Wanna Be Myself' / 'Bone Idol', was released, and on 6th December they recorded a session at Maida Vale 4 studio for John Peel. Later that month, they released their debut album on Valer Records, Further Temptations, a shoddily produced document of a highly underrated band, armed with angry lyrics and a sharp sense of humour fuelling fiery originals like ‘Lift Off The Bans' and 'No More Time'. It's was a great record but its release marked the beginning of the end for the band.

V/A - Winters Of Discontent: Peel Sessions 1977-1983

A feature of Peel's BBC Radio 1 shows were the famous John Peel Sessions, which usually consisted of four songs recorded by an artist live in the BBC's studios, and which often provided the first major national coverage to bands that later would achieve great fame (These 'sessions' are similar to 'Live Lounge' sessions recorded today for the station). The BBC employed it's own house bands and orchestras and it also engaged outside bands to record exclusive tracks for its programmes in BBC studios. This was the reason why Peel was able to use "session men" in his own programmes. Sessions were usually recorded and mixed in a single day; as such they often had a rough and ready, demo-like feel, somewhere between a live performance and a finished recording. John Peel remained on BBC Radio 1 for 37 years, until his death in 2004. During that time over 4000 sessions were recorded by over 2000 artists. Many classic Peel Sessions have been released on record, particularly by the Strange Fruit label and this one of these.

THE RUDE KIDS - 7'' Collection 1978 - 1982

Long before Millencollin and The Hives spread the Swedish punk rock over all the world's continents, there were a bunch of rascals who took the aptly named The Rude Kids, one of the most classic swedish punkbands from the late 70's. The Rude Kids were a punk rock band from Hagsätra/Stockholm. Their first single 'Raggare Is A Bunch Of Motherfuckers', that they recorded themselves, was released by Polydor in 1978. Rude Kids was the first Swedish punk band to release a record trough a major record label. The single sold between 5000 and 6000 copies (compared to 600-700 copies for an average Sham 69 single). Tony Parsons named it "Single Of The Year". Polydor also released the single 'Stranglers' and the LP Safe Society. Their records got good reviews in the press. Rude Kids played in London a few times. Once they opened up for Madness (only realising at the gig that it was Madness, not Doctors of Madness) and were attacked by Skinheads in the audience. After they fled the stage the audience smashed up all the gear without realising they smashed up Madness' gear. In 1980, when Rude Kids signed with the record company Sonet, they had a more poppy sound compared to their earlier music. In 2002 Turbonegro performed a cover on the Rude Kids song 'Raggare...' at Hultsfredsfestivalen. Singer Böna was killed tragically in a car accident in 1982. That was more or less the end of the band. Musically they are a typical '77 punk band, loud guitars & huge hooks, they blow everything up against the wall, brilliant lyrics and awesome songs, I cannot stop listen to. Their last two singles are "a little" quiet and with a nice casio tone but equally brilliant. "We are the Rude Kids and we're made this record that we think you should listen to!" (Böna) - Absolutly!!! In this file you get all 7inches, all covers and overall 13 songs in 37 minutes of pure impact.

THE CORTINAS - Defiant Pose (Singles & Demos 1977-1978)

Uhhhh... fantastic release on Radiation Reissues and I promise, this record saves every fucking day. What's inside: "Bristol Punk quintet the Cortinas began as an R&B covers band, but soon sped up their repertoire when punk arrived, making them local pioneers. A slot supporting the Stranglers at the Roxy brought them onto Miles Copeland and Mark Perry’s Step Forward label and they later signed to CBS before imploding, guitarist Nick Sheppard then joining the Clash and drummer Daniel Swann San Francisco’s the Sneeches. This ace compilation gathers the best of their early work, including the immortal debut Fascist Dictator/Defiant Pose, as well as ‘TV Personalities', both in the studio and live. Another crucial piece of the Bristol puzzle." A limited edition of 100 copies comes in yellow vinyl. Great Music!

GATECRASHERS - Desillusioned EP 1980

Only record by the Gatecrashers from Denmark, a very short-lived band (1979-1980). They were part of the DIY movement & released this bloody sucker via the legendary Irmgardz label (singer Kenan was part of the founders), they arranged their own concerts, designed their own posters and had their own fanzine. The band consisted of members Ken Revoltaire (Kenan Seeberg - vocals), Martin Crash Accident (Martin Lind - guitar), Carsten Crewcut (Ole Nyegaard - Farfisa), Peter Durup (bass, 1979-1980), Ole Dreyer (bass, 1980-81 ), Torben Østergaard (drums), Henrik Halvor (drums, loosely attached), Hans Brydegaard (drums, loosely attached) and Lene (Aleine Stern). The band played for several punk concerts "Concert Of The Moment", "NÅ!!80" and "Concerto De Nobrainos Insanos" and regularly at the Danish punk places Rockmaskiner, Saltlageret and Huset in Magstræde. They were inspired by the Stranglers and Doors. One of the hallmarks of them was that the band often had televisions standing on stage which they smashed with an ax great posture during the song "TV & Radio People". On some cool compilations present, one of them Bloodstains Across Denmark. Great KBD stuff!

ROTATORS - Zombie Tango 7'' 1980

In 1977 the Rotators were the first band in East-Westphalia to play punkrock. They came back in 1997 for a reunion which brought the new recorded CD "Best of 1977-1997". The single "Zombie Tango" is their only record on Kripo Records and includes two tracks. They use an organ in their music which made them sound closer to the Stranglers than most other German punk bands of that time. A nice little one!

A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS - s/t LP 1982

Next one is a post from a band which I listen a lot in my school days and so I wanna post their debut record here. A Flock Of Seagulls was started by Mike Score and his brother Ali in 1979 in Liverpool. Mike, who was previously a hairdresser, played keyboards, guitar, and vocals, Ali played drums and their friend Frank Maudsley played bass. The band took their name from a line in the song "Toiler on the Sea" by The Stranglers, which appears on their album 'Black And White'. The band added guitarist Willie Woo, and Mark Edmondson joined briefly when Ali and Mike had a falling out; however, Ali re-joined when Mark took ill. They then began writing songs. Soon after, Willie left, allowing Paul Reynolds to join. They then started playing clubs and eventually got a recording contract. Eventually, under the management of Tommy Crossan and Mick Rossi (Checkmount Ltd.), they began to release singles through Jive Records. The group released an EP and a couple of singles, 'It's Not Me Talking' and 'Telecommunication' on Bill Nelson's 'Cocteau' label; both tracks produced by Nelson. In 1982 the group's third single "I Ran (So Far Away)" became a worldwide hit, most notably reaching number 1 in Australia and the top 10 in the US and New Zealand (where the band became popular). The parent album A Flock of Seagulls and another single "Space Age Love Song" was also successful. Two great albums followed and in 1985 the group released a new album; Dream Come True. Despite having a new sound based around the Fairlight Synthesizer the album was critically panned and a commercial failure. The remaining members fell out and A Flock Of Seagulls in its original incarnation disbanded. Although parodied in later years, the band is now recognized as a pioneering act, capturing the zeitgeist of their time. This one is a classic with eleven wavies.

Burning Ambition: The History of Punk, attempts to be a definitive overview of the British (except DK) wave/punk scene in the late 70s/early 80s and while it falls short of its goals, it's nevertheless an admirable effort. The Crème de la Crème are here to honor, only classics on it. Surely some of you, like me, have the original records at home but this double album should become a favorite of yours, because this record is one of the finest punk compilations which is ever released. Love to hear all these classic songs in this order and believe me.... you will enjoy it as a good fuck.

ARSON - White Folks 7'' 1979

Five piece from Toronto hereby invite you to listen to their only great & rare 7Inch on Motor Records, which was released in a limited edition of 900 copies, and since I can't talk about the How’s, Why’s and Wherefore’s, because I wasn’t there at the time, I found a small but shiny & informative anecdote from someone who knows better, here we go: In 1977, at the height of the punk rock pandemic that was effortlessly engulfing the globe, vocalist and composer Rude Tuesdai fortuitously joined forces with guitarist Marcel Lafleur to begin a musical friendship that has spanned more than three and a half decades and spawned the incendiary band ARSON, the rest of the gang were Chic (guitars), Spyke (bass), Mike (drums). Ask anyone who’s ever heard them live and they’ll tell you that ARSON sonically sutures the Detroit destruction of the Stooges and MC5; the New York noise of the Velvet Underground and New York Dolls; and the British brainpower of the Stranglers and Clash. I could go on, so I will. Arson has independently toured all across North America and played countless concerts in a myriad of notorious rock’n’roll breeding grounds like New York, Detroit, and Chicago while sharing stages with (and stealing spotlights from) much influential legendary luminaries as the Dead Boys, Misfits, Suicide, Troggs, Destroy All Monsters, etc…. Meanwhile, Rude and Martin continued to douse the band’s smoldering ashes with new songs until the time was right to finally tap their past and craft a contemporary sound containing the unflinching fury of their earlier incarnation.

Aided and abetted by John Sutton (Weakerthans) on bass and David Quinton (Mods, Dead Boys, Stiv Bators) on drums, Arson recently recorded an in depth profile for Toronto radio station CIUT while recent concerts have garnered a whole new generation of rave reviews. That not hyperbole, that’s a fact and you can take it from me because I actually was there back in 1977 at the height of the punk rock heyday. So who you gonna believe: me or your own ears? RATTUS - WC Räjähtää 1982

In the early hour I welcome the weekend with fast hardcore from Finland and we put on the debut album by Rattus on Poko Records. Formed in the spring of 1978 by Jake and Vellu who started to play mostly English punk bands songs just for fun (Sex Pistols, The Damned, Clash,etc.). A few weeks later they asked Jake's brother Tomppa to join the band and so he did. The name Rattus was taken from the first album of the Stranglers, "Rattus Norvegicus". Rattus is latin meaning a rat,a very big rat. In the early days the band did shows only in their hometown and near of it. Fourteen heart attacks in less than twenty minutes, must I have say more? They made numerous albums, singles & represented on countless compilations and they're still touring, for example 2020 at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool, UK., definitely worth a trip. - Now quickly to bed, in eight hours I'm back on my bike, good night Europe!

Good morning revered community and welcome to a new round of "Music that nobody wants but still exist". Next one is a nice idea I think and it takes a long time to put all this stuff togehter but in the end it was worth the effort and stress to bring this among the people - P.Trash Records released this brilliant record with twenty of todays finest Low-Fi-, Garage- and Blues-Punkbands which cover old and rare Punkrock jewels, most of the originals can be found on the awesome Killed By Death blog ot here. Every song is amazing and you get thrilled by these versions. No wonder the album was sold out quickly and a second volume should follow two years after. THE VIBRATORS - V2 1978

Classic punk by the Vibrators from London and active since 1976, they have released well over twenty records to date. You see, these are young veterans of good music. Info: The Vibrators were founded by Ian 'Knox' Carnochan, Pat Collier (bass), John Ellis (guitars), and drummer John 'Eddie' Edwards. They first came to public notice at the 100 Club when they backed Chris Spedding in 1976. On Spedding's recommendation, Mickie Most signed them to his label RAK Records. Most produced their first single, "We Vibrate". The band also backed Spedding on his single, "Pogo Dancing". The Vibrators recorded sessions for John Peel at BBC Radio 1 in October 1976, June 1977 & February 1978. They were one of the pioneering punk bands that played at London's Roxy Club. The band signed to Epic Records in early 1977. Their debut album, Pure Mania, was well regarded by some music critics and, seventeen years after its release, The Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music named Pure Mania one of the 50 best punk albums of all time. During the 1980s, John Ellis recorded with Peter Gabriel, as well as recording and touring frequently with Peter Hammill, then subsequently the Stranglers, eventually joining the latter full-time in the 1990s. Pat Collier went on to work closely with the Soft Boys, producing their seminal album Underwater Moonlight, and Robyn Hitchcock, producing and mixing some of his solo albums (to which Knox also sometimes contributed). Phil Ram went on to form Able Ram and brought out two singles, "Disco In Moscow" and "Hope We Make It", although without any chart success. Despite numerous line-up changes, the Vibrators are still touring to this day as a three-piece, with "Eddie" being the only original member. V2 was their most successful album, reaching #33 in the UK Albums Chart and it earned the band a TV appearance on Top Of The Pops. FRESHLY - Air (Quoth She) 1986

Now a re-upp from the unfortunately inactive Phoenix Hairpins blog which was first posted by Curious in 2007 and I want to adopt his words here: "Danish band Freshly originally started as Freshly Riots. As Freshly Riots they released two records. The first is the Delightfully Fresh EP in 1982. Second release is the Hope album released in 1984. This album contains eleven tracks of punk inspired by early Stranglers. For the second album 'Air (Quoth She)', they shortened the name to Freshly and went for a more postpunk sound, with some hints to Killing Joke. All records were released on their own Bondeskiver label. Another release on this label is the 'Complication' comp. slab (maybe soon) with ten punk & new wave bands from Denmark as War Of Destruction, Electric Deads and Sods." Last strong record of this great band whose music evolved from snotty punk to melodic numbers.

LONDON - Animal Games 1978

Delicious catchy music form the British Island is coming up next and I will inform you with existing words: London is a four-piece punk band formed in London in 1976, best known for their wild stage act. The original line-up was Riff (vocals), Dave (guitar), Steve (bass) and Jon (drums). They recorded in their short lifespan two singles, a 4 track EP and an album for MCA Records in 1977 actually released in February '78 after the group had disbanded. Most of their songs were written by Riff (including the first two singles Everyone's A Winner & Summer Of Love) or by Riff and Steve. All their records were produced by Napier-Bell at the IBC Studios in London. After an absence of more than thirty years the band returned to live performance and subsequently released the album "Reboot" in 2012 with line-up Riff (vocals), Steve (bass), Hugh (guitars) and Colin (drums). Animal Games is the only album recorded by the original line-up of the Band. The album contained all the band's singles. They toured extensively throughout 1977, including a major UK tour with the Stranglers and their final gig was @ the Marquee Club in Wardour Street on the 8th December 1977. The band broke up shortly afterwards. On leaving, Moss joined the Damned and then formed Culture Club with Boy George. Riff released solo records on MCA and CBS before reverting to his real name of Miles Tredinnick and becoming a comedy writer; Steve formed a new band The Original Vampires and Dave following stints in Metro and Holly and the Italians reverted to his real name of Colin Wight and became an academic (recently appointed Professor of International Relations at the University of Sydney). Simon Napier-Bell went on to manage George Michael and Wham! before becoming a best selling author of rock 'n' roll books. In 1997 Captain Oi! Records released a best of London CD called "London-The Punk Rock Collection" with fifteen smasher... Now pay attention to the four for good forty minutes, because they deserve it and don't forget: a good deed every day!

FRESHLY RIOTS - Delightfully Fresh EP 1982

OK, a lot of divshare links are alive and I wanna post asap a few from this folder. The first one is this delicate EP by one on my favourite bands from Denmark. Freshly Riots formed in Gedsted on 1 October 1981. First weeks of the groups life offers several replacements till finally ending with a crew called Jørn Iversen (guitar), Mike Hammer (bass), Christian Pedersen (drums), Michael Andersen on the keyboard and Bo Led Andersen on vocals. Mike and Richard had played together in the group Export and they were inspired by the Clash, Sex Pistols, Stranglers and UK Decay and then they found their sound. After two tapes their first vinyl comes out on Bondeskiver and this brilliant EP offers six classic KBD goodies. In 1984 the full length album 'Hope' (which I have somewhere online) with a more wave oriented sound but great and then they changed their band name into Freshly and released their final album 'Air (Quoth She)' in 1986. The band play at the Huset in Århus their last concert and dissolved finally in May 1989 when Mike and Michael are moving to Århus. Let's now enjoy this little piece of sunshine!
