ABOVE THE RUINS - Songs Of The Wolf 1984

All right my dear followers, now a record that can/will certainly be a subject for discussion, but I like the songs and that's why it's okay to post the music here on wdthtc. Nevertheless, I quote a little facts/background as you are used to from me and tell me your opinion if you have any criticism or anything else to say about the record: "After being asked to leave Death In June in 1984 due to his membership in the British Fuckin' National Front, Tony Wakeford formed Above The Ruins. None of the group's releases name any of its members. Wakeford never said which other persons were involved in the group. The band released one cassette in 1984 which was issued on vinyl 1986 (First Floor Records) and CD in 1996. The album's sound was similar to the dark post-punk of early Death In June. They contributed a track on the No Surrender compilation which was released via Rock-O-Rama alongside with fuckin' nazi bands but I think this happened without the band's consent because Egoldt was a damn money-hungry bastard. The music's post punk sound bears resemblance both to early Death In June and his future project Sol Invictus. The anonymity of the band members, the lyrics (dedicated to subjects like patriotism, anti-Marxism, anti-egalitarianism and anti-multiculturalism) and Wakeford's political affiliations of the time led to on-going controversy and speculation surrounding the project. Wakeford formed Sol Invictus shortly after this project was abandoned. In 2007, he stated that he had had no connection to or interest in such ideas for twenty or more years." This copy is the re-release from Infinite Fog Productions which came out in a limited edition of 500 copies. Take it or leave it, but don't talk about it until you've heard it.

APPENDIX - Top Of The Pops 1984

Hell Yeah, the first day of vacation and after a very long sleep and a short visit to my friend Januz at the weekly market, the blog is now getting down to business, with the second longplayer from Appendix from Pori which came out via Propaganda Records, licensed by the divine Cologne scum label Rock-O-RamaWho already likes the debut of the four will be intoxicated here as well. Fifteen fantastic catchy melodic songs, mostly under two minutes, in an appealing sound quality, Egoldt wasn't certainly at the knobs, still virtuosos at work; Mikki (vocals), Jaska (guitar), Tomi (bass) and Vesku (drums). Arto Hietikko from the Toinen Vaihtoehto Magazine wrote: "On the second album Top Of The Pops the band mixed catchy punk with hardcore, and the result was an overall fine album. Faster hardcore songs alternate with slower songs and there are even some post punk influences to be heard. The record was released by Rock-O-Rama and it didn't seem to get as much attention among Finnish punks as the first album. Appendix definitely had a sound of their own compared to other Finnish bands. In Finland, at least, everybody instantly knows what’s meant a band is said to be “Appendix influenced”. They might not have been as extreme, angry, or in-your-face but they are still very much liked among punks worldwide and will undoubtedly continue to find new listeners with new generations of punks in times to come. More recently, Appendix has reformed, doing their best to spoil their legacy on a series of new releases, all of which are mostly watered-down crap, but in their heyday the band surely put out some world top class songs & they undoubtedly deserve their place in the Finnish 80’s hardcore punk history."

C.O.P. - Ever Alone 1986

Rabid fast pogo rhythms request entry into your house, by this five piece from somewhere in the remotest Walachei. C.O.P. (Call Of The Prisoner) was a short lived combo and consisted of Töpper (vocals), Spencer & Totti (guitars), Jörg (drums) and Dirk (bass). Ever Alone was released on Erazerhead Records, a Rock-O-Rama sub-label, and has the typical Egoldt sound and, as always, produced in such a way that you can't understand one fucking word and that is really a shame, because this minimalist seldom added a lyric-sheet, as economical as ever. They have really good songs in the baggage; fast, loud crackers mixed with melodic mid-tempo numbers give the whole thing an additional charm and provide their album an entertaining listening pleasure. Apparently other birds saw it the same way too, because in 1999 the slab was pressed again, as a bootleg of course, partly in multicolour splattered vinyl. Fazit: bombastic sonication, authentic, refreshing, PunkRock!

RIISTETYT - Nightmares In Darkness 1984

Classic and legendary Finnish hardcore punk, unbelievably rough and snotty, unmatched then as now and another personel favourite of Finnish bands: Riistetyt - Originally formed as Cadgers, the band was created 1981 and recorded one split 7" with Kaaos before changing their name, then played until 1985 and reunited in 1991 and have been active ever since. Their second album was licensed by Rock-O-Rama and I can tell you, it's overpriced these days, okay, the record is brilliant but it's crazy what some people want for it.... pure capitalism! Egal, the studio side contains songs in bloody English which work quite well. So far, Riistetyt have always been on the road in Finnish. The B-side is full with live material from the a set that they played on the aforementioned Puntala-Rock in 1983. Good sound quality and the band delivers. On this album are Lateri (vocals), Perry (guitars & bass on tracks: A1 to A8) and Piise (bass on tracks: B1 to B10), Jaska (drums on tracks: A1 to A8) and Stydy (drums on tracks: B1 to B10). The boys can be found on numerous compilations and their first album Valtion Vankina is a blast, re-upped for you, and if today would be Friday, I would say an absolutely perfect start to the weekend, but recommended even after a long, hard day's work. Let this crazy, wild & irresistible sound penetrating you!

MASSACRE - s/t LP 1985

Finnish three piece from Kuru, alive from 1984 - 1989, got back together 2006. On their rare debut at the start: Pete (vocals/guitars), Minnie (bass), Make (drums) and recorded for Propaganda Records, distributed by Rock-O-RamaIt is known that Finnish bands have a large following, fan base or at least enjoy a high status. From the far north of Europe comes great musical enjoyment in form of extreme hardcore, melodic ramonespunk, powerful punkrock and dark heavy metal, something for everyoneMassacre confirm this impressively with their eleven varied blasts. The record is hard to get and is all too often offered at overpriced Euronen, so enjoy every song as I do. Two more albums followed, four singles and lots of compilation contributions, some can be found in the blog. Great Stuff!

CHAOS Z - Ohne Gnade 1982

RRR.13 is by far the best record of the Brühler label Rock-O-Rama and if the three, Thomas (vocals/guitars), Andreas (bass), Michael (drums), would have known at the time that Egoldt is a damn profit-oriented bastard and is not a niche for underground bands in the DIY sense, they would certainly choose another label, but the times were different and labels were rare. Chaos Z were founded in summer 1980 by the three above as the Zeroes. In October of the same year they renamed their band Chaos Z. At the same time, they started to write their lyrics in German. Their first vinyl appearance is the awesome Abmarsch EP on Mülleimer Records 1981. They rarely play gigs and there was no indication of the line-up on the records. Only with releases on samplers did it become known that the brothers Thomas & Andreas Löhr were the main members of the band. They existed from 1980 to 1983 and then merged into the band Fliehende Stürme with the same line-up. In 1995 Andreas recorded in single-handedly (Michael had left the band and Thomas died after the recordings for third Stürme CD Fallen) another Chaos Z album. 45 Jahre Ohne Bewährung took up the hardcore of the early 80s. In 2002, Weird System released the double LP Dunkle Strassen (1981-1995 complete), a compilation of all Chaos Z pieces that had been released so far, which contained all the lyrics (apart from that to Rocker Billy) and a summary of the band's history by Andreas. However, as with the sampler Schlachtrufe BRD, the intro for war is missing (however, it was cut out incorrectly on Dunkle Strassen), which was originally included on this album. Chaos Z's music is initially pure hardcore punk that may have been influenced by bands like Discharge. According to their own statements, they also felt inspired by New Wave groups and so more and more elements from the Dark Wave were used which then ushered in the changeWith this album the three have produced a real universal classic and in my opinion, the best German HardcorePunk record ever and the original (appeared with a lyricsheet, which was rather unusual for the shitty label) is every damn price worth. Unequaled, still topical and great after almost forty years!!

TERVEET KÄDET - Black God 1984

Want wild fast short loud songs? Now the opportunity has come: Terveet Kädet (Healthy Hands) were Finnish hardcore punx, the first in Finland and the band was founded in Tornio, January 1980 by Läjä (vocals), Tiimo (guitars), Piäsky (bass) and Peedro (drums). They have had a major influence on bands from all over the world, especially in Brazil (which some have claimed was because of a member from the leading band Olho Seco and his enthusiasm and connections to that country's scene). Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Soulfly has mentioned Terveet Kädet as one of his all-time favourite bands. The band's line-up changed several times, and the singer Veli-Matti "Läjä" Äijälä was the only permanent member. The four are guests on numerous compilations. Black God was released via Rock-O-Rama records with a studio and live side, twenty-one killers in just under seventeen minutes. Any questions?

SISTE DAGERS HELVETE - The Hell 1984

Fuckin' rainy today, first class blog weather and I'm digging out another classic record by Siste Dagers Helvete (freely translated Last Days In Hell) from Moss, just south of Oslo, and the band consisted of Oskari (vocals), Morten (guitars), Knut (bass), Rune (drums) and were active from 1981 to 1986 and their album "The Hell" had landed on Rock-O-Rama because the famous Finnish label Propaganda Records went bankrupt and H.E. grabbed with his greasy fatfingers for the masters, the band writes today: "[...] it was released without the band's approval, with wrong song titles, no royalties and worst of it all: the label did a radically different mix, destroying the master tape that originally had a depth and punch very unusual for a hardcore band at this time." Nevertheless are thirteen fast, catchy, irresestible smasher are left at its best. In 2010 appeared a splendid compilation called Hele Helvete 83-09 via Fysisk Format with all their recordings plus live material.

RAZORS - 1977 EP 2004

Formed 1977 in Hamburg, the Razors are a german punk band from the first hour. With interruptions and changes in the composition the band is still active. Feller, God & Schwabe began together in the summer of 1977 continue under the influence of the emerging wave of punk music. Till May 1978 they rehearsed without a singer. With Danker was a singer found. He stayed only three days to rehearse the set until the first real concert. This took place during the Grünspan-concert series in Hamburg. The Razors were now actively contributing to the environment of the Krawall 2000, one of the important early punk stores in Hamburg. There they played regularly. Their debut single 'Christ Child/Enemy' appeared in 1979 of the band itself was produced and distributed. The next two releases were published by the Cologne label Rock-O-Rama. 1981 the band broke the contract with Rock-O-Rama and changed to Konnekschen for two publications. The singer left the band to henceforth take care of his children and Lui from Napalm took the vocals for some concerts. The Razors remained in this formation. The band broke up soon after on lack of perspective. 2003 its the reunion of the band and in 2004 this single was released with new footage on Klartext Records. Guitarist Andreas Schwabe died in December 2010 a few weeks after his 50th birthday. At his funeral, the Band Napalm plays a reunion concert. The Razors stand for brilliant '77 style punkrock and they not lost after twenty years their aggressiveness and power. Great record!

ERIC HYSTERIC & THE ESOTERICS - Drive You Crazy 1981

Pretty rough debut from Eric Hysteric & The Esoterics on Wasted Vinyl Records and the band consisted of Sam & John (vocals), Andy (bass), Eric (guitar), King Bee Jones (drums), Ricky (guitars/bass/vocals). In addition to his work as a solo artist (since 1971) Hysteric was a member of S.C.U.M (1978-1979), the Vomit Visions (1979-1982) and the Frankfurt riot combo Der Durstige Mann (1982-1995). In addition, Hysteric wrote for several Frankfurt fanzines, including "Same Old Song" and "Ultra Hard Core Punk Sounds," and was notorious (among others, the English Zig Zag Magazine and the German music magazine Sounds) for his letters to the editor. The first public project of Hysteric was the punk band S.C.U.M (Löhnberg/Gießen). After a disastrous appearance in the Jugendzentrum Gießen - acclaimed by art students - Hysteric emigrated to London. During sporadic visits to the ancient homeland, he took with the Vomit Visions, which in June 1979 from the remains of S.C.U.M. emerged, various songs on, and provided the punks at the Frankfurt flea market with the latest records from the UK and the US.

In London, Hysteric went to the studio in 1980 with Andy Groome and Leigh Kendall from the Australian punk pioneers Last Words. The result was the album "Drive You Crazy" released under the name Eric Hysteric & The Esoterics. "The Esoterics LP DRIVE YOU CRAZY is one of the most misunderstood masterpieces of pop music. Not a single weak song, uncompromisingly performed, heart-touching "(Karl Bruckmaier, Bayerischer Rundfunk March 14, 1990).

In 1982, Hysteric returned to Germany and founded under the motto: "Who takes us seriously, it is your own fault" together with the (already then) legendary chain spunk Markus Monoton, who had been a member of the Frogs und den Elbseglern, the riot combo Der Durstige Mann. While the German music critic ignored DDM, who initially also included Oskar (drums) and Marcel Roth (guitar), Due to the hairstyles of Monoton and Oskar, who had turned into skinheads around 1980 in protest against the punk turned fashion punk Barney Hoskyns in the New Musical Express (January 8, 1986) understood the DDM philosophy expressed in the programmatic title "This Is Frankfurt Not Boston (Fuck Off L.A.)" and was thrilled, Der Durstige Mann is a filthy sound far removed from our own (american) punk rock, which is extremely conservative, hedged behind allotments of slogans, etc. (...) Two of them are skins, slouching outside public lavs, the other two walled lingering in front of boutiques in grotesque young-men-wear modeling poses. I guess this makes you kid of the cheap trick of Frankfurt punk. M. Monoton (sing) and Eric (guitar) say: "I whistle on London and LA, and they are right."

After the radical trash aesthetic of the first two EPs surprised the thirsty man, now shrunk to the duo Hysteric/Monoton, 1984 with the 12'' "Saufen Ohne Ende" and the album "Bier 4 Tot", of which the single "Bier Nix Gut!" was decoupled. Tesco Vee: "Here are the guys who are really sounding slick enough to enter the world of commercial jingles and the like. Do not get me wrong. It's still boss, the bossest. "The highlight of this pop-phase was the 1985 single" Im Winter Whiskey Im Sommer Pernod".

After reviews and reports in the Bravo, a re-release of "Bier 4 Tot" by Rock-O-Rama and a placement in the WOM sales charts threatened commercial success. Hysteric responded with a radical change of course: Der Durstige Mann found back to his roots with the album "Himmel & Hölle". On the solo albums "The Crazy King (A Fairy Tale)" and "Für Dich" developed Hysteric his "difficult idiosyncratic, but highly sensitive music" on. Eric died on January 20, 2016.

COTZBROCKEN - Jedem Das Seine 1981

Brilliant or scrap? That's the question I'm asking myself when I listen to Cotzbrocken from Cologne. Blunt uninspired monotonous music with simply knitted lyrics or the signs of the time recognized and zack into Herbert's studio and spontaneous thirteen songs recorded. I have some Rock-O-Rama records but this one is by far the last I would buy. The band existed from 1979-1982 and consisted of Peter (vocals), Axel (guitars), Igor (bass) and Carsten (drums). Musically, this very well-known but often ridiculed record was in the German punk scene not really a highlight, too slow and monotonous; the self-contradictions in their lyrics showed hardly any irony. The album was indexed by the BPjS, which, so Moloko Plus (Fanzine), "proves that the ladies and gentlemen at the Federal Examination Office took the nonsense seriously". In 1982 the band appeared together with Der Fluch, OHL, Fasaga and Stosstrupp on the Köln-/Leverkusen compilation Die Deutschen Kommen. Stylistically, the songs are similar to those on Rock-O-Rama's published and indexed record. Although the Cotz lumps are considered embarrassing due to their simple music and lyrics - even for their time - the "Moloko Plus" described their album as "undoubtedly one of the worst records ever to have done a punk band [...] Nothing is right here: the band can not play, the singer is completely incompetent, the lyrics saudoof, the production a catastrophe", they are regarded as one of the most important German punk bands and their plays as classics. Oldpunk Karl-Heinz Stille said, "Cologne was for most of them more of an encouragement to make their own music than heroes and role models. You were SO good even after the first three rehearsals, and they already had a record outside. But just that gave the band something totally real, authentic and honest [...] punk rock in its original form, even if it did not always work out quite so with the second chord".Well, decide for yourself, because over taste can be argued, as is known.

RAZORS - @ The Rebellion Festival, Blackpool 08.08.2014

More awesome live stuff, this time by the Razors which were formed 1977 in Hamburg and with interruptions and changes in the cast, the band is still active today. Feller, Gott and Schwabe began making music together in summer 1977 under the impact of the emerging punk wave. Until May 1978 was rehearsed without a singer and with Klaus a singer was found. He only had three days left to rehearse the set until the first real concert. This took place during the Grünspan concert series in Hamburg. The Razors were henceforth also active in the environment of the Krawall 2000, one of the early important location in Hamburg and there they played regularly. The 1979 7'' Christian Child/Enemy was produced and distributed by the band itself and is a blast in my opinion. The next two releases appeared at the later Cologne right-rock label Rock-O-Rama. In 1981, the band broke the contract with the label and changed for two releases to the Hamburg label Konnekschen. In 1981, singer Klaus left the band to take care of his children from now on, the vocals took over Lui from Napalm. For some concerts, the Razors remained in this formation. Among other things, Martin had during this time a few guest appearances on studio recordings of the band. The band broke up soon thereafter lack of perspective. 2003 is the reunion of the band and one year later a single with new recordings was released by Klartext Records, recorded in the studio of Martin and since them they keep on rockin' which they here clearly underline.

INDECENT EXPOSURE - Live In Hildesheim/Germany 2008

Let's get to a band that certainly polarized, especially since they also released their records on Rock-O-Rama (1985) when the label was released only a Nazijunk, but I don't think they are, patriots rather, no matter, the music is okay and so I post this little CD which comes via Index Records with nineteen Streetpunk Oisters! Indecent Exposure were formed in late 1981, with Britain in a deep dire recession, three million on the dole and then Southall, Brixton & Toxteth along with many other towns & cities kicking off, it was now time for IndEx to make their mark through their own brand of Oi! Music!!! - More info in the file and I keep going with another vinyl rip.

THE SKEPTIX - ...So The Youth 1983

A great politically charged band, not as heavily political as Crass, but great well thought out meaninful lyrics are there. The Skeptix originally formed 1980 in Stoke On Trent by Snotty (vocals), Fish (guitars), Usher (bass) and Chig (drums) and they signed to Zenon Records and release their debut 7'' Routine Machine in 1981. Between 1981 & 1983 the band released five singles & an album via the German label Rock-O-Rama Records which was not a good decision, the album went down in nothing and received little responseA split with OHL, The Kids Are United EP, followed and they said goodbye to H.E. and in 1985 the Skeptix split up. In December 2001 the band, with the original band line-up, reformed & started to rehearse for the Holidays in the Sun Festivals in the UK & USA. Their first album in twenty years, Hate & Fear, was recorded & released in 2003. In the same year the Skeptix toured the USA to promote the album. The recording of their gig at New Yorks CBGBs became their next album for release. A DVD of the CBGBs gig, including additional footage from the tour, was also released. So now enjoy fast, brash UK eighties hardcore punk.

VORKRIEGSPHASE - Auf In Den Tod 1983

An incredible fast & hard carnage are the only slab by this four piece from Kaufbeuren with fifteen bloodbaths, released via Rock-O-Rama. Founded by Mad (vocals), Frank (guitars), Georg (bass) and Kurti (drums) sometime in the early 80's. Presumably they sent their demo to H.E. and he produced their plate in the usual ROR sound. Partly a bit exhausting, not comparable to today's stuff, but still good and intense. In the same year appeared the 'Scheiss Krieg' EP with three pieces and a demo from 1984 was the last life sign by the band. The original record is traded extremely high and in 2006 a bootleg found the way to light with all recordings. Now enjoy this rush of fast attacks, complete with the rare insert, Prost!

RELEASE THE BATS - Ever Pleasant Smile... 1986

Say Hello to Saturday with a piece of Deathrock. Posted by Curious Guy eleven years ago on his phoenixhairpins blog and his comment on the record coincides with mine so I quote his words for this: "Release The Bats were a goth band from Bolton, members were D. Stephens, K. Taylor, M. Naylor and Rod Barker. Don't know much more but they released a 7" in 1985 with two tracks: 'Unacceptable Behaviour' & 'Harsh'. Both tracks can be found on the album. I won't say that this album is classic stuff but it's damn rare and worth a listen. For those who don't know, First Floor was a sublabel of the infamous Rock-O-Rama. This label started as a punklabel, releasing German punk and also licensed records off of Propaganda Records from Finland so that people had easier access to those classic Finnish hardcore punk records. But later the label also released records by Skrewdriver and other RAC/WP bands. Rock-O-Rama ceased all activity in the 90's after the police raided their office. I don't think that bands like Release The Bats, Saigon and They Must Be Russians were aware of the connection; or maybe they didn't care?" I was lucky to acquire this slab for little money, and musically not bad at all.

DESTRUCKTIONS - Vox Populi 1983

Ingenious Hardcore from Ulvila by Destrucktions, the four was founded in 1981 by Mike (vocals), Poko (guitars), Mixa (bass) and Jaakko (drums) and Vox Populi was recorded for Propaganda Records but is released via Rock-O-Rama in 1983. At that time Destrucktions had already split up, so that is the only record they have ever released. Compilations featuring the band at a few, one in this blog: Finnish Spunk/Hard Beat. Fifteen absolutely short kicking bombs with fierce sound which gives the band proper power and anger. Höhnie Records released 2007 a record named Complete Destrucktions with all their recordings plus rare demos in a gatefold sleeve with lyrics and band history, both in Finnish and English as well as some archive pictures which you can get via Melonville Hardcore blog. Fazit: first class twenty-five minutes of Finnish Hardcore!

B.TRUG - Lieber Schwierig Als Schmierig 1982

And one more German punk slab from the fucking Rock-O-Rama (RRR14) label and this record comes from a time when the streets create the honest, pure & rough punk sound, far from the self-righteous politicay correct political incorrectness of later productions. Not only the uncompromising sound, but also the lyrics are absolutely authentic. B.Trug were Joe O. (vocals & bass), Jolly (guitars & vocals), Pit (guitars), Susi (drums) and came from the deepest heart of Bavaria, a region called Allgäu, they recorded fourteen solid mangy wild songs in the typical ror sound but the hardness can't cure properly because the sound is peculiarly leaky. According to punk-quality standards, the reason for the disappearance of the group could be mistreated. Too bad, since they have at least laid one of the last legitimate garbage punk classics (Frank Apunkt Schneider, Ventil Verlag 2007). In 2006, Teenage Rebel Records reissued the album. Enjoy this classic, I turn to the next knockout round, Belgium-Japan.

VAURIO - A Shout From The Night 1984

From Turku are Vaurio and they were founded 1981 by Sauke (vocals), Masa (guitar), Sidi (bass) and Brando (drums) but Brando left one year later the band and new drummer Minni came in and this line-up formed the band's standard composition and also played on all Vaurio recordings, while other band members were either visiting or just being there for a short time. The group was active until summer 1985 after which it re-assembled only on May 11, 1990, at the six-year anniversary celebration of the turkish Aura brewery. Vaurio is part of the Finnish hardcore punk movement from the early 80s and recorded one EP, Sortoa Ja Vainoa on Propaganda Records in 1983 and this full length which was released via Rock-O-Rama, the German label we all love... and two tracks on the great Finnish Spunk/Hard Beat compilation (coming soon), also on the Cologne label. Vaurio's sound stands for short fast songs, not so aggressive as Terveet Kädet or Riistetyt, rather slight melodic mid-tempo songs and in between, of course, short catchy numbers, fourteen nuggets in twenty-five minutes. Fuck info at the end: singer Sauke died at the age of 38 in 2003. - In his honor: A Shout From The Night!
