BRUTAL - Tappavat Pisarat EP 1989

As the band's name can be guessed, energetic, wild, brutal music for your ears. I know from Finland either sing along punk rock in the best Ramones-style or classic hardcore like Terveet Kädet. Brutal belongs to the second category. Six Hardcore pissed off nuggets, all just under six minutes and then the spook is are already over: Terrific! - Unfortunately I have not further info about the band but this EP on Kahlenukke Records is damn fuckin' cool. The drum sound reminds me a litte bit of Septic Death. You'll like HC then this is a must have!!

THE GYMSLIPS - Rocking With The Renees 1983

Weekend and let's start with pure smoochy girlie music from The Gymslips and they are a spirited punk-influenced pop band. The lyrics to songs like Drink Problem, Face Lifts, Barbara Cartland and the title track are hardly sophisticated, but they will make you smile. And they also do some great cover versions - Suzi Quatro's 48 Crash and a song called Robot Man. The Gymslips are tuneful pop-punk songs, in the Ramones style, romantic gentle pop, Songs about being one of the lads, being proper working class. This is Renee Power & that's it and if you had a chance to buy a copy....do this!!!!

RATSIA - s/t LP 1979

Ratsia was originally formed in 1977 by Jyri (vocals/guitar), Juha (guitar), Rudi (bass, vocals) and Pasi (drums) and they were mostly playing Stooges & Ramones songs, but soon they started writing songs of their own, sung in English. The language was then switched to Finnish. Ratsia took part in the Finnish rock championship competition in 1979 and won in the "New Wave" genre! They were featured on the Hilse compilation with a song called 'Ihohygieniaa', a cover version of Breakdown by the Buzzcocks and many more. In the same year followed the band's debut album, released in fall with great melodic mid-tempo tunes (pretty the Clash cover of 48 Hours). Fourteen smasher all in all and if you really want to find something to complain about the album, you could say that it sounds too clean and February was way too warm. The band broke up in fall 1981.

FRÆBBBLARNIR - Viltu Bjór Væna? 1996

Now a fuckin' rare and awesome post and it's really difficult to get records or anything else from Fræbbblarnir, a Scandinavian band which were formed in 1978 and released a number of records until they quit early in 1983. A punk band playing short, melodic songs fast and raw, they were inspired by the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Damned, Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias, Stiff Little Fingers and the rest of the early Punk and New Wave scene, as well as 1960s bands like the Kinks and Troggs. They appeared in the documentary Rokk í Reykjavík, and the album “Viltu Nammi Væna?” is regarded as a classic. Its members continued playing on and off under various names until a compilation album was released by Smekkleysa (Bad Taste) in 1996, when the original band was re-formed. The band is still active and their record “Í Hnotskurn”, released in 2015 got excellent reviews, an album of the year for veteran critic Halldor Ingi Andresson and top reviews without exception. This re-release on CD from 1996 came via Smekkleysa (Bad Taste) and offers the album "Villtu Nammi Væna" with the addition of the 7Inches "Bjór" and "False Death", Out-Takes from the recording of VNM and some great live recordings as bonus. A great CD with thirty-eight catchy and dirty Killers!!

THE LURKERS - Fulham Fallout 1978

It's time for a classic one which is dedicated to the Lurkers, legendary British punx from Uxbridge/West London, formed 1976 and the original line-up consisting in Pete "Plug" Edwards (vocals), Pete Stride (guitar), Nigel Moore (bass), Pete "Manic Esso" Haynes (drums) and still active nowadays. They are notable for being the first group ever on Beggars Banquet Records for whom they released two albums. The style on their debut is a good demonstration of how they earned the nickname "The British Ramones" and it came out between the previous two singles, containing fourteen slices of nearly melodic lowbrow masterpieces, including a new version of the pogo-tastic 'Shadow'. "No pretensions, no hype, no frills and were nothing less than pure rock'n'roll. This is a band who deserve so much more respect than they get" One reviewer described it as by far their best with production that really makes the guitar kick. It's sloppy and amateurish, but that's what makes it so great. "Be My Prisoner", a song from the album, appeared on Streets, a compilation (BEGA1) from 1977 of early UK combos from a variety of independent record labels. - In my opinion their best album; catchy songs, singalong choruses, simple Punk'N'Roll, must have!

THE BLITZKRIEG BOYS - Back From Nowhere 1989

The Blitzkrieg Boys was formed 1985 in Tampere, when Marty Blitzkrieg (vox) got an idea to form a band that would be a mixture of the Ramones, Cockney Rejects and the Misfits. Soon he found Gil (guitars), Kukka (bass) and Jussi (drums), excatly the right guys to play this kind of music. In 1988 they relelased their first record in form of an EP on Raktor Records with seven melodic punkies. I bought that in 1989 at a gig in the Marquee in Hamburg when Broken Toys and the Schwarzen Schafe toured through Germany. I was instantly elated. After a period without Punkrock I came in the mid 90s in touch with their only album which was released on the German label Teenage Rebel Records in December 1989 (1000 copies, 225 in orange vinyl and the rest black). The production is bit cleaner (which is almost too much) than the EP but I love the ramonesque style and they make it perfect as well. In 2011 the Finnish label Woimasointu released an album called 'Too Old To Die Young' but I have not yet heard it. All Right, enjoy the Blitzkrieg Boys and a nice weekend!

VANDAALIT - Namuja Lapsille 1980

This gluttony at this time is really enormous, Cookies, Stollen, Roasts, etc.. I'm gradually wondering where it's all going, my scales inevitably show me too many kilos. Do you feel the same way? Well, I don't even want to know. Let's concentrate on the essentials and let's see what musical treasures I dig up these days. Vandaalit from Hyvinkää has permission to open this week, they were a gang of youngsters who played hard blunt Rock & Roll in the mid-seventies, founded 1977 by Vesa (vocals), Piitsi & Klide (guitars), Sepi (bass), Ari (drums), but hearing the Ramones everything changed, and soon the band transformed their style to rough, simple punkrock. Namuja Lapsille is their debut album from 1979, released via Hilse-Levyt, with fifteen melodic straight forward sing along numbers that sound like easy Christmas carols for the whole family and the cover somehow fits as well.

CELA NR 3 - Per Tempus 1985-2020 [2021]

Seventeen melodic songs, very varied anniversary album with many new songs and a few old hits in alternative versions by this Polish combo from Grudziądz, inspired by such legendary bands as Ramones, Sham 69 or Buzzcocks. Orginally formed 1985 as Zanik Pamięci (Memory Loss). In 1986, in the train, which the band went to a concert in nearby Toruń, there were quarrels, which resulted in a forced stay in the Grudziądz detention facility. As if to commemorate that event, the group changed its name to Cela Nr 3. In 1987 they released their first Tape To My and that was it. It tooks more than ten years before the second tape, Kwiaty, and a live tape in 2000 were released. Finally, the first vinyl album Jedynka followed in 2001. The band's most recent sign of life is a live CD, Bulbojugend Live Series Vol.1, which was released in July 2023 on Bulbojugend Records. During more than thirty years of playing together six releases were brought among the people (some of them only on tapes). This particular platter features Gruby (vocals/guitar), Dee Dee (guitar/vocals), Anda (bass), Melody (drums) and it's an amazingly good one.

GOLLYWOG - Fredagskväll 7'' 1978

Now a small highlight from the Swedish province of Jönköping county and the historic province of Småland. Gollywog was a punk combo from Tranås and were actice 1977-1980 and consisted Håkan (vocals), Peter & Jois (guitars), Anders (bass), Tomas (drums), and this is their very rare, much sought by collectors, only fuckin' record which they released by themselves in an edition of 300 copies. The five were inspired by the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Ramones and others and most of their own songs (and there were a lot) were mainly written by singer Håkan. In their short livespan they played a handful of gigs in Tranås, Malmö, Motala and Stockholm. In 1980 the band broke up and Håkan became singer in the Nässjö band Rottweiler. The A-Side is a superb catchy number with killer guitars and if they had released an album in this style, it would have been on everyone's lips, one hundred percent. The flip is a solid rockin' track, equally brilliant. TOP record!

RÖVSVETT - Hunden Beskyddar Människan Men Vem Beskyddar Hunden 1984

Now a decent tape rip with the Demo from the Swedish Hardcore combo Rövsvett. Born on a hot summerday in 1983 in the little town Tranås in Småland. Frank and Jerker decided to ask Rylle and Löken if they wanted to form a brutal hardcoreband. The name felt natural since Motörhead, Ramones and Baccara already was taken. After many sweaty gigs with Rylle on guitar, Löken bass, Frank drums and Jerker on something that was supposed to resemble song, came their first democassette “Hunden Beskyddar...” in 1984. This CO² band is full with eleven ass-kickin' hardcore tracks and they sound much better than on their 7inches which can you get here. Rövsvett show that they were one of the best Swedish hardcore band ever and I like this sound a lot. A review from Septic Death singer Pushead: "Summoning Swedish insurgence that discharges a quick spasm of invasioning disorder and brawling vigor. Jerker's throat vibrates in growling wails as he wrings out a forceful vocal assault. Compelling guitar structures keep the action alive with hammering drum exertions, as these reels spin off alerting mayhem in that Swedish acceleration tradition. Good stuff to watch for. (Maximum Rocknroll #16, August 1984) - So enjoy this awesome Hardcore lollies and have a nice start into the weekend.

EXPLODING WHITE MICE - Fear (Late At Night) 7'' 1988

Exploding White Mice were a punk-rock band from Adelaide, Australia and were formed in the 80s. Their name was taken from a scene from the movie Rock'n'Roll High School, in which a laboratory mouse spontaneously explodes upon being exposed to the music of the Ramones, the band's foremost influence. Greasy Pop's superstars hit hard with another slab of inspired guitar ravaging obviously brought on by late nights listening to Road To Ruin. Lead singing Mouse Paul Gilchrist's singing is starting to get over the flatness he had on the first couple Mice records, and the blend of his vocals with the ever gutsy guitar and drums attack is starting to work real well. This is a group that is clearly started to develop a sense of power and they are a kicker!

ICI PARIS - Allo Le Monde... 2001

Led by singer Marie Al Kha Raz (Betty Boo style), this group performed a second class and cheerful rock'n'roll which Gaumont enjoyed. Inspired by New York Dolls (for the look) and Cramps (for the spirit), the band Ici Paris recorded in the early 80s one of the most beautiful testimonies of French rock, full of adventures that carefully avoids the cliché of easy girls and dark suburbs. Ici Paris dream of ghost train, intergalactic explorations, romantic monsters and infernal cadillac. Univers kitsch of eternal teenager combined with the few basic chords of Rock'N'Roll, the slap is great for who has the curiosity to listen to their songs. Taken by a pretty brunette with a piercing voice and a guitarist with an incredible mop, the training arouses curiosity. The connoisseurs even think they have finally discovered the rare pearl that was lacking in the musical landscape. Alas, the concerts are rare and especially the traditional media are a little too disconcerted by this universe where Baghdad and the fair of the throne have become two unavoidable poles of attraction. The time is rather for France Gall and his pianist who plays in a vertical position, so there is no place for fantasy and the second degree. Pity. The group faints in nature, while his ghost regularly returns to visit our turntables.

The history of this combo begins in 1977 with the curlies in which Hervé Crost Flament aka Shere Kahn, "Sy" Philippe Becquelin on guitars and Jean-François "Jeff" Janin on vocals (future Escalators and Fanatics) . The time is punk-rock and they renamed Gare du Stade (name of the station of Colombes) to stick to their idols: Asphalt Jungle, Metal Urbain and Guilty Razors.

The group is composed of Shere Kahn, "Sy" Philippe and Jeff complete with Jean-Claude "Dino Lamour" Courtinel (bass, ex-Incitement A La Débauche) and Pascal (drums). One of their rare weapon is to perform at La Boule Noire in December 1978 in the first part of Gazoline. In the first row, a spectator, Marie-Christine Alcaraz, knows all the texts by heart. Could she be a singer?

On June 23, 1980, their first public appearance, opener for Sham 69 at the Palace. The label Gaumont notices the band and sign them without hesitation. They recorded under the direction of producer Paul Scemama of Gialully "Center Of The World" + "Souris" which passes completely unnoticed in the eyes of the general public but which allows them to obtain the first part of the French tour of the Ramones.

A few weeks before the release of their album, January 1982, the TV show "Les Enfants Du Rock" broadcasts two songs from Ici Paris filmed @ Rose Bonbon: "Stupid Little Boy" and "La Fusée De Ton Retour". The album is in the boxes in July 1982. Mix of twist and rock glitter, "Allo Le Monde ... Ici Paris" manages to renew the genre by force of simplicity and candor. How indeed do not fall in love with the voice of little mouse of the singer? An album where cinema lovers recognize in intro the presentation of the film "Terror Extra Terrestre". Bijou's guitarist Vincent Palmer came to help Shere Khan, for Sy-Philippe seems to play only a figurative role. His name appears only in the thanks. Maxime Schmitt + Andy Scott, who later worked with Taxi Girl, took care of the sound production.

The album gets chronic dithyrambics and the first copies deposited in the bins disappear in no time. A little promotion and a hexagonal tour would undoubtedly involve a chain reaction. Unfortunately all this does not happen. Waiting patiently for a good fairy to look into their case, and to invite them to perform here and there, the spectators are impatient. Their scenic appearances are made even if sporadic as some begin to talk about a ghost group. The impression of a big mess becomes general, and little by little the complicities crumble. Here Paris does not survive this dead time. Marie is the first to leave. She is replaced by actress Anicée Alvinéa, a year almost to the day after the release of the album. The faithful of the first hour are disoriented, especially since a new recruit, Olivier "Le Baron", also took definitively the place of Sy-Philippe. (translated from rockmadeinfrance, mercí)

T.S.T - 7'' + 12'' Collection 1981-1984

Another superb collection of 7+12inches in this file, the first EP Vås Punx (1981), No Teenage Future 12” (1982) and the Sweden 12” (1984). "T.S.T was formed 1977 in Västerås by Jarmo (JM’s), Karri (Zäba) and Nandor (Nalle), but then named Panic and later on The Rats (Rots?). The name T.S.T (The Schock Treatment) came from Ramones 2nd LP and the song Gimme Schock Treatment. The band played a lot at Bryggis in their hometown Västerås before the first 7inch came (Vås Punx EP), then followed a numerous of gigs around in Sweden. Then came (No Teenage Future 12”) and T.S.T took part in an live recording for national radio P3’s show Ny Våg (New Wave), it resultet in an LP which to put it briefly was called T.S.T. By this time a new drummer had replaced Karri for the recording of the album, then followed another Maxi (Sweden 12”), the band then changed members in a couple of rounds before the last Lp came in 85 (All Throught The Nights LP), where Karri had come back as drummer. After approximately 2 years T.S.T departed and was reformed to Grim Jacks, to eventually form Dynamite Wasteland by Jarmo" (source: Swedishpunk.com). Musically there are flaky '77 punk with a pinch of hardcore, a total of 22 songs.

VANDAALIT - Raaputtamalla Rokkia 1981

Vandaalit (Vandals) can be scheduled for the early years of the mid-1970s, wherein the first composition of ramonesk punk. The band start from the beginning with own songs and was originally sung in English but they do it better to change this in their native Finnish language. It is written that they find their style when they listen to Ramones' album 'Leave Home' and so the sound goes in a brilliant melodic way. This is their 2nd album on PokoRekords and the songs have it all, fast and dirty KBD rock & roll in the typical Finnish manner. The band is still active to my knowledge, check them out, here you can't go not wrong.

EWING OI - Mår Bra EP 1984 + III EP 1986

In the south east of Sweden, more precisely from Linköping comes this short-lived band. Ewing Oi was for a short while four members when Per Hertzberg (bass) joined. Then, when Anders Ekeros (guit/vox) left, they started to play lots of Ramones covers but it didn't work out and after many name changes the band recorded their debut EP in 1984 which was released by Eugen Records and was sold out quickly.

Three awesome punkrock goodies on it which have the dirty sound of the early times and two years later the band released a second EP named "III" just to create confusion (which was the purpose). And again four pretty 'Viking Rock'N'Roll' punkrock fuckers to heal the world. - The end of the group came in September 1986. One compilation track (Bodybuilder) was used on the Schweden-Punk Teil 2 cassette, a German self-release, which is certainly interesting. That should be it for today, see you again tomorrow.

STIDLJIVA LJUBIČICA - Osvrni Se Na Mene 1981

Let's come together and unlock your eavesdroppers because it waits another example of fantastic powerpop riffs, this time by Stidljiva Ljubičica from Croatia and they were active 1980-1982 in former Yugoslavia. The band split up soon after releasing second album. Members were: Renato (vocals, organ, piano), Zlatko (guitars), Tvrtko (bass), Elvira (drums). Glorious music deserves background knowledge and I give you a bumpy translation because my Croatian is a bit rusty, but I think you can follow that, here we go:

The emergence of a new wave in the music scene, which enabled various musical styles and directions to simultaneously exist in this region at the same time. In the beginning it was underground art music created by people often without big musical experience and not much talent but with a lot enthusiasm for new ideas. There were various fusions and almost incompatible directions that created new hybrids of completely unique and original music. Combinations of rock'n'roll, punk, ska, surf, new wave created Clash, Talking Heads, Blondie, B52, Ramones and many more... in Yugoslavia by Film, Haustor, Azra (only the first two albums), Stidljiva Ljubičica and some other bands who wanted to use this boom to catch a slice of glory of the wings of a successful trend which enters the mainstream.

Stidljiva Ljubičica unmistakably had the characteristics of a famous new wave groups, they appear suddenly, out of nowhere. They were more than ten years younger than their competitors. They had a female drummer Elvira (not common at this time) & they were fuckin' teenagers who held their first gig at the end of 1979 in the hall of the high school center Vrbovec. Their songs are short, mostly 2-3 minutes long, varied, completely stripped of superfluous arrangements and with catchy beats. Lyrically small pop art stories. They performed in cinema halls, clubs and in smaller towns. The audience celebrated them frenetically, they played a couple of two-minute songs and ran off stage. There they were greeted by a bunch of journalists and photojournalists so they held a short press conference and told them "we release our first single via Jugoton and starting recording our first album."

In summer 1981, their debut 7Inch 'Volim Te' was released and a Yugoslavian version of Top Of The Pops invited them and the whole country became aware of the fantastic four! At that point, the band had about twenty songs ready so they go ahead and started the recordings for their first album, Osvrni Se Na Mene. Before that, they decided to celebrate their success with a promotional concert at the sports hall in Vrbovac, together Johnny Stulic and Azra, and held a concert in front of thousand people. Many gigs all over Yugoslavia were made in front of several thousand visitors & it was a great opportunity to promote the album which they recorded and mixed in seven days. Despite the praise of the media, the commercial success of the album was not as satisfactory as that of the record label.

The band decided to start immediately with the recording of the second album Jesenje Frke, with the idea, that after recording, Renato (he hasn't finished high school) as soon as possible join the army and Elvira start a job at the media and when the record is out, she will be performed again, as well as Renato's return from the army. There was very little no praise for the album, because there was not much opportunity to promote it. It was early 1984 that the group could physically reunite, but the members couldn't find the feelings of the "old" spirit, so there was only one concert in the original cast at the Pauk Hall in Zagreb. The air was finally out and Stidljiva Ljubičica history.

Don't hesitate, get it!

LOS NIKIS - La Amenaza Amarilla EP 1981 + Sangre En El Museo De Cera EP 1982

Los Nikis (The Polo Shirts) was a Spanish pop-punk group of the 80's that were associated with la Movida. They come with songs that feature very simple music and humorous lyrics. Founded 1979 in a suburbia from Algete which lies in the comarca de Alcalá in the autonomous community of the Community of Madrid. They are known as "The Ramones Of Algete". Los Nikis were capable to create a good collection of tunes with just four chords and seven notes. Two brothers from the drummer Rafa Cabello created Discos Lollipop label and, logically, Los Nikis released on this label some signature songs from their career. In 1983, Rafa Cabello leaves the band and entered Johnny Canut, Nacho Canut's brother, ex-"Dinarama". In 1985 they signed for 3 Cipreses/DRO and released three albums before they split-up in 1989. In the nineties they recorded a new album, "Más De Lo Mismo", that closes the band's history. Nowadays, only Joaquín Rodríguez is active as part of "Los Acusicas".

THE CONTINENTALS - Fizz Bop 7'' 1979

A little powerpoppunk which was released by CBS and the Continentals bring us two great tunes that shows the majors had taste but lost it soon. The Continentals are Bill Holliday, Tom Doherty & Alan Harris. The single was produced by Tommy Erdelyi of the Ramones. The group came from London and were managed by Doug Smith, then manager of Motorhead. They were included as part of the unique but short lived NuDisk releases in the USA - 10" EP's . Elvis Costello was also one of the artists released in this format in the USA. Music was largely New Wave high energy although other tracks reflected a wider and different style.

PROBLEMS? - Katupoikia 1980

Lots of damn good releases came from the far north of Europe and the next goodie is the debut record by Problems? They are a Finnish punk band from Helsinki, built around Tumppi Varonen (vocals), Stefan Piesnack (guitars), Häkä (bass), Droppis (drums) and Rubberduck Jones (additional guitar on the live side) which for many years has played with punk pioneer Pelle Miljoona. The band was founded in the late 70s, inspired by Ramones and Sex Pistols and became popular with their first single "Ei Tää Lama Päähän Käy" (original on Love Records, in 2012 re-released) which is a fuckin' killer song. There's a lot of energy in their music and it's not easy for me to play this record quiet, haha... Particular mention is here the A Side is full of studio recordings while the B side were recorded live at Tavastia Club, Kill City in Summer 1979. I think this is one of the first LP's with this dichotomy, I like this idea because I'm a friend of live stuff. During certain periods, the group performed under the name Tumppi Varonen & Problems? and in 2011 they are more than alive and kicking, because this year they released a live album (Suora Lähetys) with bursting excitement. Let's revive the fresh young years again!

SUZANNES - New Disease EP 1978

Well, this record is nothing new in Blogland, every one of my friends has posted this, and now I'm the last, here we go: Early Dutch stuff now by the Suzannes, a four piece from Enschede who were active in 1976-1978, and this is their only record on De 1000 Idioten Records (cool name). The band consisted of Fedde (vocals), Loek (guitars), Dick (bass), Klaas (drums) and as the cover says, 2000 copies were pressed. Influenced by the Ramones they called themselves after the song 'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen, and it was always in the repertoire in their own special version. Without an interruption they played all their songs in one go (their concerts were famous for ecstatic proportions). Six cool songs, of which 'Teenage Abortion' is the most famous one and also, besides 'Hippie', invited to some relevant compilations. JoJoJo!
