DER MODERNE MAN - Sandman 7'' 1981

Today a four piece from Hanover which were founded in autumn 1979 and disbanded in the beginning of 1984 and Sandmann is the second 7Inch on NoFun Records with two solid New Wave goodies, recorded by Mattus (vocals/synth), E.K.T. (guitars), Jens G (bass), Claudius (drums). Der Moderne Man was an experimental band descended from the Punk band "The Worst", their records appearing primarily on NoFun Records and one of the first radio hosts to spin records for the group was John PeelIn the spring of 1980 the first EP Umsturz Im Kinderzimmer was released on the Heile Welt Records label and was soon sold out. The reactions to this debut weren't really enthusiastic. At a time when the more conservative German rock groups woke up and frantically tried to find connection to what is en vogue, Der Moderne Man flirted with a wink to be unfashionable. That concerned wit, humor and more relaxed approach to the diversity of style, the attempted competition is light years ahead. In 1981 the first single with a new line-up was released. The two titles fulfilled the motto that E.K.T. once put it this way: "A three-minute song that gets off to a good start is much more important than some experiment that blows the ears of a few people. And the much-vaunted avant-garde is also going in circles: experiment today, convention tomorrow." Sounds certified that the quartet delivered "a good piece of German Pop Music" with the single. Two more albums followed, including one live, and by late 1983 they were working on new material and planned to release the third LP in spring 1984, but never came.

LAST STAND & NOONDAY UNDERGROUND - Split 7'' 1984

This split on Taang! Records features two early Boston bands. Info: Comprised of members Tom Keenan (lead/rhythm guitar, vocals), Pete Mulford (lead/rhythm guitar, vocals), Cathy DeMarco (drums), and a host of bassists over the years (including Tom, Frank & Romeo), the garage/punk-pop outfit Last Stand has been slugging it out since 1984, when they issued their first split single with Noonday Underground for the Taang! label. A three-song EP, Violent Solution, followed in 1985 and a year later, their first full-length album, Approved Cuts. Further releases followed throughout the '80s (1988's Faith In Fate and 1989's Boston Callin) before the group went on hiatus by the mid-'90s. (Greg Prato) - Noonday Underground were basically almost the same members and consisted of Tom (vocals/guitar), Pete (guitars), Leslie (bass), Kathy (drums) and has only this vinyl appearance, followed by three demo tapes (1984 &1987) and in the late Eighties the band broke up. Amazing that no label took pity on pushing the four. Well, even if it's just a short pleasure, you'll get two crunchy cocktails in return. Solid all-around.

UTANGARÐSMENN - Ha Ha Ha (Rækjureggae) EP 1980

Let's move to the far north of Europe and meet a band that I'm happy to invite to my home and that led the New Wave movement in Iceland. We're talking about Utangarðsmenn from Reykjavík which were formed 1979 and this is their rare debut EP which came via Steinar. The name of Utangarðsmenn is complicated when talking about the Punk revolution that hit the country in the summer of 1980, although the band's music is considered much more rock than Punk. Utangarðsmenn appeared at the same time as Bubbi (vocals) as a solo artist, and changed the Icelandic music scene, which had been in the doldrums for many years. At the same time and as a result, fresh Rock & Punk bands sprung up in the same spirit and the country's youth absorbed new currents, a new revolution that surrounded Icelandic music, and even today there is a hint of those changes. It soon became clear to the people that something new was brewing, and the band immediately received a lot of support with their original raw sound and indeed also reggae music. Two 12Inches plus a single (guest on numerous compis) were made and in 1981 they disbanded after only two years. Brilliant stuff!

FUNERAL DRESS - Back On The Streets EP 2013

Belgium greats Funeral Dress have scorched the scene for over thirty years (formed in 1985) and starting with their debut LP Free Beer For The Punx in 1990 showed great musical abilities combining melodic rhythems with hardcore energy. They have toured with just about every famous punk band you can think of- which built a strong fan base through out Europe. I'm In Love With Oi! (their second album) is one of their best (admittedly, I've only know this record) in my opinion, with amazingly catchy streetpunk numbers. Six more albums, numerous singles and live gigs followed and shows, the band still has a passion for Punkrock and this four track EP was released as limited edition, 500 copies: 100 x red, 400 x black vinyl, via Contra Records and to my knowledge their last sign of life on vinylI think, adequate & fresh opener for a new week and hereby starts the Monday vertically. Prost!

V/A - BG Hronika Vol.2 [Tape] 1990

I haven't forgotten, like so many other things, today part two of the very good BG Hronika tape series on U.P.C.. And again interesting bands, this time twelve, from former Yugoslavia. And as on Volume 1, there are rather unknown combos that conjure up decent music, some made it to vinyl releases, others unfortunately only on tape compis like this. Anyone who already likes the first effort and is friendly with Punk from the Balkans will definitely have fun here, varied and edgy, this small, probably only distributed locally, gives us another insight into the very active and innovative scene of this former socialist country, and some records by well-known bands are absolute classics today. The sound quality is acceptable and it goes without saying that I'll be adding part three in a few months. So far so good, later Bundesliga, important match in Berlin today.

RÖVSVETT - Den Falske Kakaoinspektören 1994

Rövsvett are a Swedish combo from Tranås and active since 1983 and are one of the oldest Swedish still active Punk bands and this is their second album on Birdnest Records. Over the years, their line-up changed and amended several times but the guys are known for their hard aggressive Hardcore and released some interesting tapes and records in the 80's. This is their secod album with fifteen solid numbers in a very production and they blast decent and you can't escape. You can compare these recordings with their demo tape from and you will find that they have not become worse. Well, everyone who likes fast and solid hardcore will get the best service here and shouldn't shy away from downloading it, everyone else too!

MÄDELS NO MÄDELS - Take That! EP 1998

By popular demand, finally Punk from Sindelfingen by Mädels No Mädels who have been celebrating their cutting '77 style dance music since 1989. Originally founded as Heavy Mädels they released their first EP under this name on FAE Musik. This was followed by the renaming to Mädels No Mädels and since then several singles and three albums have been born. They haven't all the qualities of a successful band, that doesn't let anything or anyone get in the way. Unmistakable Punkrock that always sounds crisp like fresh from the baker. In this file you find their fourth EP plus the legendary 333 x Up & Down 7Inch from 1992, both released via the great Incognito Records label. Sound 'Made In Germany' that roars, sweaty concert-goers, 99% humidity and snapped guitar strings are trademarks for a typical Mädels No Mädels gig. It's no exaggeration to say that the band brings fun into your life with their refreshing, carefree music that takes you back to life and leaves everyday life where it belongs. Also represented on numerous CompisMusicians on these two singles are Oli (vocals/guitar), Johnny (guitars), Jenz (bass) and Hari (drums) and their debut Doggie Style comes soon. Until then, let yourself be intoxicated by their driving music, buy their records (if available) and enjoy spring. Cheers!

ED GEIN'S CAR - Brain Dead Baby EP 1984

Debut EP by this Brooklyn four piece called Ed Gein's Car (named in tribute to the notorious serial killer) and the line-up consisted of Scot (vocals), Tim (guitars), Eric (bass), Fred (drums). The band was active 1982-1987 and in that time they made three albums (two of them live at CBGB) and three singles. A review: "Excellent, powerful ’77-style punk in a Misfits/Undead vein. The title track is instantly memorable for its sickoid lyrics and preeminently catchy instrumentals, but the other two songs here keep up the standard just as well. My opinion: get this EP as soon as humanly possible." (Steve Spinali, MRR #19 • November 1984)They quickly became a popular attraction on the downtown club scene, and were firm favorites at CBGB, where they recorded the 1987 live effort "You Light Up My Liver". However, the group took success with the same lack of seriousness as they approached every other facet of their career, and disbanded at the peak of their popularity in 1987; Weis later joined Iron Prostate before turning to painting. KANGRENA - Terrorismo Sonoro EP 1983

Based in Barcelona are Kangrena and the four have only made in their short lifespan one 7Inch on Anarchi Rekords, and this sucker features five pieces of unique and irreproducible sound. The band was formed in 1981 by Kike (guitars), Johnny (bass) and Manolo (drums) while singer Quoque teamed up with them afterwards: He, uninvited, joined them up on stage for their version of "My Way" on a show in December that same year and was offered the vocalist's post. The name (a misspelling of the Spanish word for "gangrene"), was chosen because they wanted something that could be indentified with what they were doing. Or so they said in that interview for the Spanish fanzine "Melodias Destructoras." As for their influences, they said that musically it was the Sex Pistols sped up and Crass & Exploited lyrically. As for local influences, they expressed their like for Ultimo Resorte, Decibelios, R.I.P., Attak, Frenopaticss and some Siniestro Total stuff and their dislike for anything out of Madrid. They kept playing about once a month until their debut EP 'Terrorismo Sonoro' was released in 1983, some compilation appearances (mostly on tapes) followed and a seventeen track cassette called Estoc De Pus was released in 1984 and a second 'El Cubo De La Basura' a year later. Shortly thereafter the band broke up. Kangrena weren't famous for melodic songs, they are rough, untamed, undisciplined and uncompromising Hardcore that will blow your mind after several listens and more effective than any Aspirin, guaranteed!

EDDIE & THE SUBTITLES - Skeletons In The Closet 1981

At the moment I'm a bit busy with other things, so I hardly find time for wdthtc, but I'm trying and today I come to an interesting record that not only offer Punkrock, the grande debut by Eddie & The Subtitles from Orange County which came via their own label No Label Records and is nowadays a rare classic. The band consisted of Eddie (vocals), Max (guitars), Chaz (bass), Brent (drums) and this is a fantastic concoction of early OC sound with bloody New Wave interludes. They release their first vinyl Fuck You Eddie! in 1980 with two great songs which was already a strong exclamation mark and brought live shows with the Circle Jerks, Black Flag and many other heroes of the period. So they created a small fan base around them and their second and last album Dead Drunks Don't Dance finally followed in 1983.
