Well, I'm finished with re-upps of two Swiss bands so I could post an extra from the alp area now: After the split of Expo (ex-Nasal Boys) the two original members Rams (bass) and Päde (drums) formed the Bucks (inspired by the British female trio The Slits) and after constant touring they released their first record on Disctrade in 1981. Too many negative experiences in connection with the music industry (the band was under contract by Major CBS, who give them the clever name Expo - Nasal Boys was too offensive, haha..) were crucial for the band resolution in 1978. Not necessarily to describe the Bucks as frustration project, but one thing was clear: they wanted to avoid the market-strategic mechanisms and create their own style and the result is awesome punk'n'roll till you drop and their music and lyrics reflect what can be moved or be moving here and today. All in all they have released six albums and the Bucks still exist today!

EXTERNAL MENACE - Youth Of Today EP 1982 & No Views EP 1983 & Seize The Day EP 1997
Triple pack for the weekend start by this awesome band from the suburbs of Glasgow. Their debut from 1982 Youth Of Today is a classic record and one year later it was followed by their second EP called No Views. Again four smash hits and you get what you're lookin' for. The band went through a few alter ego moments over the following years - playing External Menace songs at gigs but under different names. Beat The System!! had folded and the band released a few compilation tracks on Rot Records. In 1987 Wullie (vocals) was taking a short cut across the M8 when he was hit by a car and killed. A decade on, the band were revived when Captain Oi! records began to show an interest in releasing a compilation album of all the bands previous releases. The band continued to chop and change over the following two years. In 1997 the Seize The Day EP was released. They toured Europe three times, toured the UK, played countless festivals and recorded the Process Of Elimination LP. Again many line-up changes but the band is still active and with their good basic Britpunk sound always a pleasure guest in my house.
Details: External Menace formed from the same youthful energy that gave birth to many of the "second wave"of British punk bands. Put together by vocalist Wullie Hammill and John Sneddon in the summer of 1979, the band were typical of the 1979/1980 punk bands, faster and rougher than the class of 77, but not an all out UK82-style attack. The band played out as often as they could, evolving fully into the UK82 mold, and released two singles and also putting in an appearance on the Total Anarchy compilation (1982). Their sound was typical of the era, kinda speedy punk with gruff vocals and anarcho-inspired lyrics abour war, the evil governments and nonconformism. That was the side of External Menace that most people knew best, but towards the middle of the 80's they branched out in a more melodic (but still hardcore) direction, playing reggae inspired tunes like "Rude Awakening" and "Killing Me Asylum". While the band recorded two or three more demos, putting some of their new tracks down, they didn't manage to get any more vinyl out, and finally broke up in 1985. Fast forward to 1994 Ian Welsh of Swine Flu harassed John Sneddon to get External Menace back together, and start kicking some more punk rock ass. Sneddy agreed, but only if Welshy (what is it with Scots and diminutive names ending in Y?) joined the band as vocalist, since Wullie Hamill had died in 1987. Swine Flu disappeared shortly after their first single was released, and re-emerged with a new name and a new guitarist. External Menace was back.
Their first new release was Pure Punkrock on Captain Oi! in 1995, which featured all the band's Beat The System!! recordings, plus a handful of early demos, and re-recorded versions of some old songs, the release didn't attract the interest of anyone except the UK82 completists. The band were invited to play the first Holidays In The Sun festival in August of 1996, and accepted. The entire festival was recorded (very poorly) and released on video by Barn End, and selections were released on two CDs by Anagram records. The band were invited back for HITS 1997, and (again) accepted. Around the same time the first of the HITS compilations appeared (early to mid 1997), External Menace finally released their first new single, the Process Of Elimination EP. The five track single was a completely unexpected, it featured some serious punk rock/reggae fusion, in the shape of "Rude Awakening", and was a drastic step AWAY from their UK82 roots. Later that year they also released a split 7" with Rectify, and their first album. The songs were a mix of old and new Ex Menace songs, with a few hold-overs from Swine Flu. It was a refreshing blend of UK82 hardcore and more straightforward midtempo punk, with a healthy dose of reggae thrown in for good measure. The album really made people sit up and pay attention, these guys weren't just another 80's punk band back for a few quick bucks, they were talented musicians with something interesting to offer the punk community. Unfortunately they only managed to release on more 7" (a split w/Recharge) before breaking up again in 1999. Puhh, a lot of words again but good infos are part of it!

V/A - United Skins 1982
Today a nice Compilation that was released on the Boots & Braces record label in the early Eighties and the album title has a fundamental meaning. At that time there were significant fights or conflicts in the skinhead scene that were rather stupid and unnecessary. Of course also because of the right-wing scums who called themselves skinheads and had no idea where the culture came from (unfortunately it remains unchanged to this day). I think I don't have to use my mental cells any further, you know the stories, but you don't know where I got the record from. I bought them at a flea market in Berlin many many years ago and I was quite surprised to see them offered for so little bucks, apparently the record god meant well for me. Today you'll have a hard time getting the original because it's banned through the usual channels, which I think is absolutely ridiculous. All seven bands were by no means right-wing at the time and their songs are good and belong to Oi like alcohol to beer. Of course, everyone knows today that Skrewdriver took a broken path and that's the only reason why the slab has become a rarity. Crazy, right! But that is humanity: stupid and extremely stupid. Well, I'm open now an alcoholic drink, enjoy the day off and see what else can happen here today. Enjoy the music!

The long out of print double LP compilation "Definitiv Zürich" + EP is probably the most important musical tone document around the Zurich punk era and thus a piece of history. 36 songs are included here, which retain their cult status to this day, some even were the starting point for the steep careers in national and international pop world. THE VICE CREEMS - Danger Love 7'' 1979
The Vice Creems, originally the Aylesbury Bucks, formed in Aylesbury in around mid late 1977. They were basically the vehicle for Zig-Zag Magazine editor (& former teenage president of the Mott The Hoople fanclub) Kris Needs (vocals), his best mate Colin Keinch (guitar) & assorted mates from the pub. Following sparodic gigging throughout late 77- early 78, they made their vinyl debut with a fairly typical punky track "No Passion" on the Aylesbury Goes Flaccid local compilation. Danger Love is their second & last release with two tracks. The a-side is a good one, while the flip is a bit lame and not enough ass-kicking, in my opinion. In addition to their records, numerous compliation contributions can be found mostly with the same song, also rather uninteresting for rarity collectors of the notable short-lived combo.

V/A - The Master Tape 1982
I guess this rare awesome compilation from Nimrod/Affirmation Records ensures many downloads because every band/song is simply delicious. And it is astonishing that a re-issue (2000 copies and also hard to find) took place just one year later, the demand was obviously so great and if you lend your ears to the musical feast, it's no wonder. As far as I know, all songs are exclusive and delight us with finest melodic Punk/Hardcore explosions how I love it and the performance is consistently high. Comes with a fold-out lyric poster, with a segment dedicated to each band represented, which was not included at my copy. Volume 2 of the Master Tape came to light in 1983 and I would appreciate an excellent rip with scans and I very much hope that someone will have mercy, because these records are also difficult to access or only available for expensive bucks.

V/A - Killed By Death #40 1998
Starting September with one more fuckin' cool record and ripping a platter like this needs time and I'm not always in the mood for that. But here we go with another fine work, I am so free, haha.. "Strictly No English Or American Junk" on this release, 500 copies made, Redrum Records, Hell! Although Mister Fredrik has contributed greatly to this with his special contributions to wdthtc. Cheers again to You!!! So this volume does a nice job of featuring bands from places that haven't been covered before and overall the quality is pretty good with a lot of awesome killer tracks. And to be honest, I've not heard any weak KBD sampler and the detectives do once again a brilliant work. "Sid bless the man, who first had the idea to put out records like these."

MINISEX - Bikini Atoll 1982
Early morning and it goes a bit poppy with the second record by Minisex, an Austrian band from Vienna, founded 1980, of the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (?), which celebrated great successes in the Eighties. With their music they wanted to fight against the then popular songwriters' scene. At the beginning they were still singing in English, but then they switched to German. They released four albums and broke up 1990. In mid-2009, the group reunited for a charity concert and since then they play live, mostly in Austria. In March 2014 the fifth album appeared and the band keeps goin'. I bought this platte for five bucks and well, nine pretty audible relaxed danceleg swing songs. Simply said: 8 points out of 10. Check these both compilations for more Austrian music.

FLEISCH - ... Macht Süchtig EP 1989
Late in the evening we visit Horgen, a kaff in no mans land of Switzerland and meet Fleisch, a punk/hardcore four piece of the late eighties and 'Macht Süchtig is their first record on Far Out Records and it has songs singin' in French, English and German and the bandwidth of their sound goes from powerful punk into atmospheres of bellicosity, aggression and melancholy. I bought the 7Inch because of the brilliant band name on ebay for five bucks or so and when I listened to them I must say they make their thing astrein, just six pissers in ca. thirteen minutes and that is already a house mark, boom out pleasantly and the artwork with all infos within let my punk heart enjoy a drink and move me to the fast lane and lead me on the left track with frosty balls. Bloody Hell, I need my bed, tomorrow I have to work unfortunately.... Kackladen.... :(

RUGRAT - Rhubarb EP 1994
Rugrat were active in the Nineties and were founded by Graeme (vocals/guitars), Ian (bass), Andrew (drums) and they released two 7Inches, this is the first one and we listen to three melodic aggressive goodies which remind me a bit of Leatherface or Snuff but a little more fine played, the Rugger Bugger Discs label stands for solid English melodic emo Punkrock and it's only natural that they released their EP there. I think, I bought the record from on a record fair for a few bucks and I think it's worth every cent (the cover alone was worth the investment). Legal threats due to the band name's similarity to Nickelodeon's animated "Rugrats" series led to a name change to Bulltaco, from this formation exist a tape and a single. A total of six interesting minutes, packed into three songs and I wish my sore throat from yesterday would go away just as quickly.

THE BUCKS - The Fun Out Of Depression 1983
Third album by the energetic Zurich three piece Bucks on Polygram and yes, the songs are longer and more playful/melodic than on their predecessors. But still interesting and, in my opinion, a completely unfairly underestimated band. Otherwise there's not much to tell today, I'm tired and listless. They've made six more albums and gigging live here & there, and I'll cheer myself up a little, forty degrees today.

THE TRUENTS - Don't Look Back 7'' 1998
Pithy goes on with the Truents, one of NYC's Punk Rock bands that put their heart and soul into their music and became a household name. They called their music Punk'N'Roll w/a Twist (whatever that may be) and they shook the 90s right through with their fast paced punkrock. This is their third single on TKO records with two dynamic ass kickers and I bought this record for low bucks because the cover turns me on. The band has recorded four singles and one album and disappeared shortly before Millenium. Cool Cats.
