NEWS - Dirty Secrets EP 1978

Today are the first two quarter-finals and I'm already excited about the games and I hope they promise as much tension and drama as the round of 16. And all on a Friday, perfect! But first a killer record by the News from Melbourne and this is their ultra rare second one and it's a limted edition with a newspaper clippings on band. Bringing some healthy publicity for the reformed News, there was new vinyl imminent. Gavin had assisted Bruce Milne with 'The History of News', a double 7Inch pack. One is (at last!) the Pulp Flexi, the other a regular reissue of 'Dowannalove' and 'Hate' from the Babeez EP. Gavin's work was on the cover, which included dozens of press clippings on the band. Don't miss the Dirty Lies 7'' and feel the enthusiasm sound of this extraordinary combo.

THE VAPORS - New Clear Days 1980

Last today and it's the nice PowerPop debut by the Vapors on United Artists Records which I already posted in my old unforgotten blog. Info: The Vapors (David Fenton (vox/guitar); Steve Smith (bass); Edward Bazalgette (guitar); Howard Smith (drums) were a relatively short-lived (1979-1981) new-wave rock band from Guildford, one of the more interesting one-hit-wonders that flourished and then vaporized during the dawn of MTV. The band rose solely on the success of their single "Turning Japanese," a disturbing pop ditty that strangely connects madness and masturbation. However, the band's debut, which includes "Turning Japanese", boasts many other worthwhile moments. Underneath the band's English pop sound lurk strange references to and connections between Japan, war, adolescence, and insanity, all of which course through the album like phantom mental patients. The loneliness and isolation are palpable undercurrents a sharp edge to the deceptively peppy pop framework.

New Clear Days contains the UK hit single "Turning Japanese", which reached #3 in the chart in February 1980. A remix of "News @ Ten" (named after the well known ITV news programme), went to #45 in July of that year. A third single, a re-recording of "Waiting For The Weekend" which included a horn section, failed to chart. The title is a pun on Nuclear - nuclear weapons and power stations being major issues at that time. The album cover shows a rather grimy television screen displaying a BBC TV weather forecast. Among the symbols for clouds is one centred over London which is, upon closer examination, a mushroom cloud. In addition, one of the temperature symbols has been replaced with one warning of radiation and the weatherman glows. "News @ Ten", a cynical examination of the generation gap and the fear of ending up as complacent as the parent he despises for his conformism, was expected to be a hit on the back of the success of "Turning Japanese"; its poorer performance was blamed in part by the long-running strike at the BBC's Top Of The Pops which meant it received very little media exposure. There was also a marked reluctance by BBC Radio 1 - then the nation's premier radio station - to play a song named after an ITV programme.

Apart from the three singles, the best known other track is "Sixty Second Interval". Its ambiguous lyrics have been interpreted alternately as concerning the short cease-fires agreed between armies during wars to allow each to attend to their wounded in the no-man's land between them. The song was the inspiration behind the long-running "Sixty Second Interview" feature of the UK's Metro (Associated Metro Limited) free newspaper given away at public transport stations. "Letter From Hiro", the album's lengthy melancholy finale, concerns the sense of powerlessness a boy feels as events push towards World War II, and towards the inevitable ending of his friendship with his more patriotic Japanese penpal ("And when the sun was rising somewhere in the East, and when a flag meant more to Hiro than to me"). The song concludes with the playing of a traditional Japanese tune on a cymbalum. (source: unknown)

NEWS - That Girl 7'' 1980

That Girl is the third and last 7Inch of the early stages by Melbourne based News and these two goodies were recorded by Adam (vocals), Russell (guitars), Kim (bass), Dorland (drums), Graham (keyboard) and released via Missing Link. This time not as rough and dirty as its two predecessors, but still excellent and a worthy finale. In 2018 another retro 7inch, Lemme Alone, was released on Buttercup Records in a limited edition (400 copies) in two different versions containing two demo songs from 1978. Also worth mentioning is a CD (probably a bootleg) release from 2009 called Punk Never Happened??? which includes all songs by Babeez and News. Heart-warming songs that are always good for me and always demand a short break from everyday routine work. Time for a cool beer, an Ibu and that's the end of today's Blog care. Cheers!

DAS KAPITAL - Lili Marlene 1984

Well folks, now an interesting band from the far north of Europe and you know, extremely cool music comes from there, sometimes snotty and cheeky, sometimes melancholic and dreamy and these Gentlemen are more in the second area, but read for yourself: Das Kapital was a short-lived band, fronted by Bubba Morthens, at a time when he was living fast. By this time Bubbi had been drinking heavily and was burned out, he had released five solo albums over a four year period, three albums with Utangarðsmann and three albums with Egó. When news broke in early 1984 that he was going to the United States to act in films, the nation went along with it and wished him well, unaware of his drug use. He also said in interviews that he had formed a new band with Danny Pollock and other western musicians under the name Das Kapital. The name, as most of course know, comes from the work of Karl Marx. Bubbi went west in the spring but came back a few weeks and still hadn't formed a band. In July, however, news broke that Das Kapital had become a reality. Besides Bubba, the members of this group were Mike (guitars) and Bubba's friend Björgvin (guitars), Jakob (bass) Guðmundur (drums), but the last two came from Tappi Tíkarrass. Bubbi himself was the third guitarist and vocalist and Gunnar played keyboards for a time.

Initially, the intention was probably to play only at Laugahátíð during the shopkeeper's weekend, but then it was decided to continue the collaboration and make an album. Bubbi had suggested songs that were actually all in English, but the lyrics were quickly translated into Icelandic. Before the band went into the studio, guitarist Björgvin left. However, two assistants were hired for the recordings, saxophonist Jens and cellist Arnþór. The album was made in a hurry and was released by Gramm and was titled Lili Marlene after the only cover song on the album, the wartime hit immortalized by Marlene Dietrich. Lili Marlene was generally well-received and sold well, even though the critics of the newspapers were unimpressed, the album barely got anything but shitty reviews in Morgunblaðin and Þjóðvillin, but much better in Helgarpóstinum, and became the third best-selling album of  1984. In the same year, they held a solidarity concert at Lækjartorg  but then there was a BSRB strike, the strikers were invited to give speeches between the band's songs, but by the time it was over, the band had been pushed off the stage and the strikers were taken over the program, Das Kapital thus became guests in a secondary act at their own concert. Soon after the end of the year or in January 1985, the news arrived that Das Kapital had gone on hiatus, but she had then retired, the reason being that Bubbi had admitted his problem and gone to treatment. He would re-emerge later that year after the treatment with one of his best albums, Woman. However, Das Kapital's story was not completely over, because they reunited at Bubba's birthday concert on June 6, 2006, which was recorded and released under the name 06.06.06, where you can hear three songs with the band. NEWS - Dirty Lies 7'' 1978

Modest little 7inch from Down Under now: Formed in Melbourne by Gavin (vocals), Jaryl (guitars), Joy (bass) and John (drums) as Babeez but quickly changed into News, they had always been a non-image band, playing in jeans, T-shirts and leather jackets. On their side was a healthy cynicism about punk itself, especially when rock & roll success and fashionable interests encroached on the revolution. This is their first record I think, self-released and most with one-sided lyric insert. The sleeves were hand screened by the band using black and fluoro yellow ink on cheap inner bags with the record inside. Two awesome killer tunes!

THE NEWS - Do! Do! Do! EP 1987

And now a small piece for fans of Japanese girlie pop-punk and I think they are from Tokio. The Band created not a new genre and they were influenced by 80's punk rock and I like their energy here on this 4 Track EP which was released by Kojima Recordings, Inc. - Not much information about them and so all I can say that these girls are very hot and there's no filler on it. I do not know many bands from Japan, but The News are surprisingly fresh and leave such many lame Power-Pop band far behind.

BAD NEWS - 333 x Up & Down EP 1995

One more record from the legendary 333 x Up & Down series, 333 copies and today hard to get. So Bad News is very unknown and probably their only release and I think they're from Wesel. It's amazing how many such pretty pearls like this dug out again of dusty cellars and step into the light of the whole wide punk world and become a real true gem. This little four track piece is indeed a Killer and has a knotless '77 punk rock sound, catchy, dirty, short, aggressive and if a record starts with "Kiss My Ass" you know in which way it goes. All songs sung in English and you only know what's best for you. Too bad I have so little info about this band and I would be interested to see if there are any more releases. Well, I only advise you to grab this awesome groupie quickly, play it loud and enjoy their music. TIP!

NEWS - Dirty Lies EP 2018

It's rare that I post a record twice but the following record by Melbourne's News was re-released by Buttercup Records in 2018, this version in 200 hand numbered copies on orange vinyl, with two more previously unreleased rarities on the fipOne from their 1978 demo, the other a live recording and both in an awesome qualitiy. The thing was released in different formats and with good reason. A brilliant combo with a great spirit and splendid songs and a perfect opener for this sunny weekend. Liner notes plus a sticker within, but getting a copy after four years won't be easy and cheap. Good luck with your search. 💋

GERMS - (GI) 1979

Another classic that needs to be heard is the debut by the Germs, punk from Los Angeles and originally active from 1976 to 1980. The band's main early lineup consisted of singer Darby Crash, guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Lorna Doom, and drummer Don Bolles. They released only one album (GI) on Slash Records, produced by Joan Jett, and were featured the following year in Penelope Spheeris' documentary film The Decline Of Western Civilization, which chronicled the Los Angeles punk movement. Germs disbanded following Crash's suicide on December 7, 1980. Info from wiki which says everything:

Crash (born Jan Paul Beahm) and Smear (born Georg Ruthenberg) decided to start a band after being kicked out of University High School for antisocial behavior, allegedly for using "mind control" on fellow students. Their original name was "Sophistifuck and the Revlon Spam Queens", but they had to shorten the name as they could not afford that many letters on a T-shirt. The (initially hypothetical) first lineup consisted of Beahm (then known as Bobby Pyn, and later as Darby Crash) on vocals, Ruthenberg (under the name Pat Smear) on guitar, an early member named "Dinky" (Diana Grant) on bass, and Michelle Baer playing drums. This lineup never played in front of a live audience. In April 1976, the band added Lorna Doom (born Teresa Ryan) on bass, with transitional member Dottie Danger (later famous as Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Go's) on drums. Carlisle never actually played with the band, as she was sidelined by a bout of mononucleosis for an extended period. She was replaced by her friend Donna Rhia (Becky Barton), who played three gigs and performed on their first single. Carlisle remained a friend and helper of the band (she can be heard introducing the band on the Germicide: Live @ the Whiskey recording, produced by Kim Fowley), only leaving because her new band, the Go-Go's, were becoming popular and, as she put it, "I was really disturbed by the heroin that was going on". Nickey Beat, of various noteworthy Los Angeles bands including the Weirdos, also sat in on drums for a time.

The band's first live performance was at the Orpheum Theater. Smear recalled: "We made noise. Darby stuck the mic in a jar of peanut butter. It was a dare, we had no songs or anything! Lorna wore her pants inside out, and Darby covered himself in red licorice...we made noise for five minutes until they threw us off". The Germs initially drew musical influences from Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Ramones, the Runaways, Sex Pistols, and New York Dolls. Early on, Smear was the only musically experienced member; Doom survived early performances by sliding a finger up and down the fretboard of her bass while Rhia generally kept a minimal beat on the bass drum, periodically bashing a cymbal. Early performances were usually marked by raucous crowds made up of the band's friends. As a result, their gigs became notorious for being rowdy and usually verged on a riot.

The end of the band came when Crash, who had become increasingly impatient with drummer Bolles' antics, fired him and replaced him with his friend Rob Henley. Shortly after the Germs split, Crash and Smear formed the short-lived Darby Crash Band. Circle Jerks drummer Lucky Lehrer joined the band on the eve of their first (sold-out) live performance, when during soundcheck, Darby kicked out the drummer they'd rehearsed with. The band, described by Smear as "like the Germs, but with worse players", played only a few gigs to lukewarm reaction before splitting up. Shortly after that, Crash contacted Smear about a Germs "reunion" show, claiming it was necessary to "put punk into perspective" for the punks on the scene. However, Smear has said Crash told him privately he wanted to earn money for heroin with which to commit suicide. Since Crash had described this scenario many times in the past, Smear did not take him seriously. On December 3, 1980, an over-sold Starwood hosted a final live show of the reunited Germs, including Bolles. At one point, Crash told the amazed kids in the audience, "We did this show so you new people could see what it was like when we were around. You're not going to see it again".

Crash committed suicide on December 7, 1980, at age 22. Unreported at the time, Crash had overdosed on heroin in a suicide pact with close friend Casey "Cola" Hopkins, who ended up surviving. She later insisted that he did not intend for her to live, nor did he change his mind at the last minute and intend for himself to live. According to Spin, apocryphal lore has Crash attempting to write "Here lies Darby Crash" on the wall as he lay dying, but not finishing. In reality, he wrote a short note to David "Bosco" Danford that stated, "My life, my leather, my love goes to Bosco". Outside the world of the Germs' fans, news of Crash's death was largely overshadowed by the murder of John Lennon the next day. A local news station mistakenly reported that Crash had died from taking too many sleeping pills.

SAGA - In Transit 1982

I guess you've heard it in the news, Notre Dame on fire and usually I'm not interested in that, but that was a little shock yesterday, after all, it is the most famous cathedral in Europe and that does not leave me cold. Large parts are destroyed, but the towers are still standing and it's unimaginable if the building had completely disappeared, a great French tragedy could be prevented thanks to the vehement use of the many firefighters. I'm sure they will restore this ancient masonry through donations.

Today's post dedicated to a band whose first six records still excite me and I had the pleasure to see them live in the Festhalle 1983. Originally known as Pockets, Saga were formed 1977 in Oakville, Ontario from the nucleus of Canadian rock band Fludd. In Transit is their fifth album and was recorded at the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle, Munich on February 5th, 1982 and at the Tivoli Theatre, Copenhagen on February 22nd, 23rd & 24th, 1982. The nine songs are famously selected and now we start our little time travel with classics of their first four albums, no punk... but finest rock. Let them in!

MODERN MINDS - Go! 2007

The Modern Minds were a PowerPop combo from Edmonton and consisted of Moe (vocals & guitars), Bob (bass) and Kim (drums), founded in the bedroom community of St. Albert. All three had known each other for years and had played together previously, the band in its present form and attitude was formed in January 1979. They made their debut in June '79 at Bordon Park as The News. In January 1980 the name was changed to The Modern Minds. In the same year they met an enchanting creature and Theresa's World on Bumstead Records from 1981 is their only record and in her Bungalow Rock we find three golden goblets with exquisite northern Italian frangolino, the taste of which reminds us of ripe red strawberries, and invites us to pluck the endless fields of temptation.

The band has been accused of being too raw and unpolished, of having potential but who can't or won't refine themselves into a slick suitable for mass market appeal, they have struggled with this attitude and with the difficult Edmonton music scene since their beginnings. This struggle may be a result of the fact that the Modern Minds feel no obligation to anyone or anything except themselves and the music they feel is important. Due to the negative vibrations of all these assholes, their Rock'N'Roll ghosts slowly faded and the band broke up; It's Gone! In the last several years, Theresa has gained some notoriety and, along with some additional recordings, released on this small compilation with eleven melodic and raw songs as CD in 2007 through a small Japanese label called 'Base' & finally reissued as vinyl in 2018 by UglyPop Records (1st press in red/300 copies & 2nd press in black/500 copies). Solid release with massive infos within & high explosive 💣💣💣

V/A - Powerpearls Vol.1 1998

🎸 In spring, I wowed you (and me) with another great collector series that some detectives created in the late 90s and this beauty focuses on PowerPop rather than Punk though a few goodies featured wouldn't be out of place on a Punk compilation; We're talking about the Powerpearls Explosion and each Volume has a healthy serving of the best from this genre (those were Hans Knut Hohlhand's words, an avowed four chord lover whose inspiration brought many hermits together to form great bands). Decent selection for the first part in my opinion and the eighteen time travelers shoot you into the weekend, and I'm sure that even the annoying corona virus will shrink back on this foamy wave and shut up for a while. 🎸

V/A - Bloodstains Across Australia 1998

Today I  kick off with rare punk stuff from down under and the Bloodstains comps have become a monster of their own and I think all releases are somewhere in the network available. The reason for this post is again the excellent rip and the complete artwork and finally, of course, the gifted music on it. Everyone's heard the classics by Razar, Victims, Rocks, Leftovers, News and Fun Things....all great bands, but they're on dozens of other compilations so it makes no sense including them here. Instead you'll get a taste of some killer Australian punk (previously uncompiled tracks) you might have missed.

2.Dance With The Führer - SKUNKS
3.Threats - YOUNG IDENTITIES
4.Police - PROLES

HEARTBREAK - Ung Och Gjord Av Glas 1980

Heartbreak from Eskilstuna was formed as Inferno in 1974 and was inspired by Velvet Underground & Lou Reed. Some years later they changed their name to Heartbreak Hotel and inspired by The Ramones they performed short fast rock songs. On a Lou Reed concert they met the Englishman Danny Malone who became their manager and who succeded to give them a contract with the label Sonet. Their first single "Ride In The City" was released in 1978 and got the fourth position on the European Radio Chart (Europatoppen) and the songs was even included on the Swedish rock compilation Swedish Tracks '79. The pressure from the record company on the group to use Swedish lyrics led the group to a dead end and the inspiration faded away. New members and a new recording contract with the new label Wave led to the release of the single 'Stand-In' who soon got "record of the week" in two of Swedens biggest news papers. The album 'I Hetaste Laget' (Some Like It Hot) recorded in just three days was released in 1980 and later the same year also a second album 'Ung Och Gjord Av Glas' (Young & Made Of Glass). After a lot of more touring they released the album Wow in 1983 on the major label EMI. The album and the single "Min Tjej Viker Ut Sig I Fibban" (My Girlfriend Is The Centerfold Of Playboy) was not the success the band had hoped for and Heartbreak did as many other Swedish bands did in 1983 and disbanded. The Hardrockband Hanoi Rocks has done covers of the two Heartbreak songs "Vill Ha Dig" (I Want You) and "Rock'n'Roll Band".

OFF! @ Annandale Hotel/Sydney 2013

Let's spend some fuckin' great US Hardcore with this delicacy. Black Flag, Circle Jerks, OFF! The stations of frontman Mr. Keith Morris, the one with the best punk voice and as Jello Biafra, one of the pillars of american punkrock. I have all the records from his old bands and with OFF! he kicks another excellent example out what's inside him and I think the songs give us all a strong impression of living in the U.S.A., the land of the free. This bootleg is a highlight of 29 energtic songs in a brilliant quality with nice greetings to the audience and the band is hot. You can really feel the gig and I like every minute of this 30 minute H-bomb. In 2011 we had the chance to visit a concert in Wiesbaden and we both were just thrilled. I can really recommend anyone to join a OFF! concert, you will never forget it. OFF! are Keith Morris (vox), Dimitri Coats (guitar), Steven Shane McDonald (bass), Mario Rubalcaba (drums).

KLICHÉ - Supertanker 1980

Debut by this Danish New Wave band (1977-1985) from Aarhus on Medley Records that turns out to be a pleasant surprise and relief for tired ears. Energeric, screaming, a hopping bass, shrill guitar and cynical synth influence, with that catchy and upbeat sound Kliché hit perfectly the nerve of the early New Wave phase, artistically & versatile which they continue to expand and refine on their second longplayer Okay Okay BoysThe band has released two albums and a few singles in their eight years of activity and a few sampler contributions also jumped out. Well, what does humanity need? I tell you: relaxed music for relaxed people, far away from the madness of tense horror news and with this record they have their chance.

V/A - Trash On Delivery 1983

Bad news, my computer crashed yesterday and so there are no more freshly ripped records for the next time and I have to reorganize everything. It sucks, but it was inevitable. Having said that I want to make sure I keep posting and therefore an older rip with an excellent description: "The holy grail of bands who looked to conquer theses sleazy streets of London in the early '80s are contained in the almighty 1983 compilation Trash On Delivery. Not quite "third wave glam" (but if you like-y, be sure to check out Jook or The Radio Stars) or third Wave Punk (not quite the Anti-Nowhere League, but check out the UK Subs new threads! "Trash On Delivery" stands on it's own as something completely unique to itself. A snapshot into a brief space of time when the previous glories of '70s Glam Rock, Punk, & Heavy Metal met in perfect harmony for perhaps the 1st time. Twenty odd years later it remains a perfect sleaze punk record and a guaranteed blueprint for those who'd help further commercialize the scene later in the decade (see The Quireboys, Wolfsbane, Wildhearts, Tattooed Love Boys, & Soho Roses just to name a few.)

The compilation, put together by Flicknife Records' Frenchy Gloder (also of The Genocides, whose scorcher "Private Hell" is included on the comp) features a hodge podge of classic gems ranging from crash and burn trash rawk of emerging scenesters like the awesome Marionette and The Babysitters to the then present day projects of Post-Punk era upper crusts like The Barracudas, The London Cowboys (Glen Matlock, Barry Jones, & Steve Dior) and ex-Swell Map Nikki Sudden (with his Bible Belt project). Add in some one off gems like Bad Detective's lost power pop classic "Favorite Record", Suffragette's "Do You Want My Love", and "I Heard The Devil" by Little Roosters frontman and future Eastenders TV Celeb, Garrie J. Lammin, as well as the first recorded release of an embryonic Dogs D'amour and Ray Zell cover art, and you've got one primo slab of proto Sleaze Punk! Reissue 1988 by the spanish label Aspa Records." (Adam T. in "Sleazegrinder.com")

2.Private Hell - THE GENOCIDES

RADIOAKTIVA RÄKER - Verkligheten EP 1993

Ohhh my dear followers, bad news: my turntable is kaputt, the needle said goodbye and now I'm standing in the woods. Even shaved legs are of little use, believe me, damn damn damn. Well, now it must the stock of friends and sleeping rips to serve and the first combo is a freshly ripped 7Inch from Sweden and the combo is called Radioaktiva Räker, a TrallPunk (Trallpunk is a Swedish subgenre Punk style that is based on trall-friendly melodies, fast drum beats and often political (mostly left-leaning) or narrative texts. The pioneers of Trallpunk are said to be Asta Kask and Strebers, however, there are divided opinions about this. Trallpunk gained increased popularity during part of the 1990s) band which formed 1991 by teenagers Johan (vocals/guitars), Danne (guitars), Jimmy (bass), Jonas (drums) in Hofors, Gästrikland and disbanded in 2003 after a small summer tour. After two demos they caught in summer 1992 a record deal with Beat Butchers and all records, three albums & two 7Inches, came out there. Their fast, sing-along melodic songs came to symbolize for many the Swedish Punk/Wave that culminated in the mid-1990s.

The band reunited on 25.09.2009, for an evening with the celebration of the Beat Butchers 25 year anniversary. This occurred on Södra Teatern in Stockholm together with a number of other bands that have collaborated with Beat Butchers.

KANGRENA - Estoc De Pus 1984

First, good news: the Domestic Bliss 7'' is complete... well well!! Now music extreme by Kangrena from Barcelona. The quartet was formed in 1981 and consisted of Quoque (vocals), Kike (guitars), Johnny (bass), Manolo (drums), after releasing the legendary Terrorismo Sonoro EP and two cassettes recorded between 1983 and 1985, their activity was diluted in the second half of the 1980s. They were characterized not only by their love of noise and disorder on the musical level - already expressed in the title of their only album - but for the nihilistic mentality and destroy, which, in the middle of the decade, placed them a little on the margin of the hardcore scene of Barcelona, which generally tended to the anarcopunk activist and positive ideology. This is the re-release on B-Core Disc with twenty-two raw & blunt hardcore attacks.
