Hibakusha is the second full length by Inferno from Augsburg/Bavaria on Rise & Fall Productions. Same line-up, Howie (vocals), Archi (guitars), Zong (bass), Max (drums), as on their legendary debut Tod & Wahnsinn and they recorded this bloody sucker in summer 1985 at the legendary Music Lab Studios in Berlin. Fourteen brute & powerful songs which at the time couldn't be surpassed in terms of power. In the land of the rising sun, the Japanese term Hibakusha is mostly used in connection with the victims of the atomic bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and was already set as the album title before the recordings were made. This record is more sophisticated and complex in terms of sound, the high-speed sound gave way to a heavy rock sound at times, which still overwhelmed the punx, because Inferno were the only ones with extreme speeds at the time experimented and with this extravagant style the four were way ahead of the times. A mature development with partly personal and political texts that were worked out seriously, bitingly and ironically. 2018 re-issued by Power It Up Records in partially limited colored vinyl. In 1990 the band dissolved. - German Hardcore Nugget!

SLAUGHTER & THE DOGS - Beware Of... 2001
After a five-year break, this band has returned with a really impressive album, and I can say: the gentlemen haven't forgotten how to make music and have written twelve catchy Punkrock pieces, plus a grandiose Beatles cover, that underlines their potential and they don't got any quieter. Released via TKO Records with delicat Artwork and and partly in white vinyl. Info: formed during the initial onslaught of UK Punk in 1976, Manchester's Slaughter & The Dogs were one of the first group to release a single (the overlooked classic "Cranked Up Really High") on trailblazing hometown independent label Rabid Records. - A review: Slaughter & the Dogs were there at the beginning, but lacked the controversial flair of some contemporaries who got more ink or the talent that helped their other peers remain major influences decades later. They had a few classic songs ("Cranked up Really High" was the bands first single), but little else, and a longevity to match. Nostalgia brought key members Wayne Barrett and Mick Rossi, kind of a punkin' poor man's Tyler and Perry, back together in the '90s with a new rhythm section. Though this is the second release of all-new material from the stalwarts after several semi-official live releases, after 1999's Shocking it was the first to have a proper promotional push in the States. The band sounds like they're having fun, and Beware Of is pleasant enough, fondly recalling the days when punk incorporated glam influences proudly. But at the end of the day, it often just magnifies the aforementioned limitations of the group. The fact that the best song on here, "Hell In New York," was written in the glory days and only finally put down in the studio for this disc shows how hard it is to teach old dogs new tricks. BANNLYST - Diskografi 2011
Solid release by Berlin based label Norwegian Leather and this awesome compilation features all their vinyl recordings (we're talking about Bannlyst I should maybe mention, a cool trash Hardcore combo from Molde & Oslo, existed between 1982-1985 and consisted of Finn (vocals), Børre (guitars), Per (bass), Thomas (drums) and some members later went on to play in So Much Hate and Stengte Dører, among other bands. Twenty four goodies in total with a good dose of metal and some pop sensibilities, carefully remastered from the original tapes and vinyl as all the master tapes have been lost over the years and I think they've done very well and it's nice to be able to enjoy those long lost nuggets again, from one of the best hardcore bands from this country. A blast from the past!

V/A - Du Redest Zuviel...
It took a long time, but now it's finished: Part X of the small WDM Records series with rare German underground, already finished in December 2021, but the artwork took some time, because it should be chic and appealing, and that's very well done in my opinion as you can see (I'll send out a brainless greeting right away). First of all, my respectful thanks to Mr. Reinhard, my Ösi-Connection, who has been providing me with first-class material for many, many years and never tires of continuing to do so. All these compilations would not be possible without him, thanks for that my friend and at some point we drink several pints together. Part X is again full of rare stuff from all genres of German subculture and impresses with its variety and extravagance of bands that made it to a 7Inch here and there, or just released only a demo or compilation track. Rock, Punk, New Wave, everything at the start and from the multitude of pieces I have put together twenty-nine nuggets that are essential, undiscovered and want to be heard. I'm sure you'll enjoy the selection and Part XI will be worth the wait (previous parts should be online, you have just to find them), and this one will come in autumn 2022. As always, feedback from you is welcome and I hope you have something in your pan, otherwise enjoy the following 78 minutes of spicy delicacies that make life shine brighter like a summer day. PERE UBU - The Modern Dance 1978
Fucking Monday, but don't worry, it will pass too... we're coming to a band that has been around for a very long time: Pere Ubu, formed 1975 in Cleveland/Ohio. The band had a variety of long-term and recurring band members, with singer David Thomas being the only member staying throughout the band's lifetime. They released their debut album The Modern Dance in 1978 and followed with several more LPs before disbanding in 1982. Thomas reformed the group in 1987, continuing to record and tour. Describing their sound as "avant-garage," Pere Ubu's work drew inspiration from sources such as musique concrète, 60s rock, performance art, and the industrial environments of the American Midwest. While the band achieved little commercial success, they have exerted a wide influence on subsequent underground music. A review: There isn't a Pere Ubu recording you can imagine living without. The Modern Dance remains the essential Ubu purchase (as does the follow-up, Dub Housing). For sure, Mercury had no idea what they had on their hands when they released this as part of their punk rock offshoot label Blank, but it remains a classic slice of art-punk. It announces itself quite boldly: the first sound you hear is a painfully high-pitched whine of feedback, but then Tom Herman's postmodern Chuck Berry riffing kicks off the brilliant "Non-Alignment Pact," and you soon realize that this is punk rock unlike any you've ever heard. David Thomas' caterwauling is funny and moving, Scott Krauss (drums) and Tony Maimone (bass) are one of the great unheralded rhythm sections in all of rock, and the "difficult" tracks like "Street Waves," "Chinese Radiation," and the terrifying "Humor Me" are revelatory, and way ahead of their time. The Modern Dance is the signature sound of the avant-garage: art rock, punk rock, and garage rock mixing together joyously and fearlessly. (John Dougan) - Well, I think the album starts strong, but gets lost in experimental soundscapes and so the power dissipates quickly like a beer that isn't drunk.

THERAPY? - Troublegum 1994
Melodically dark punk with a dose of metal-like sound, this is Troublegum by Therapy? from Larne/Northern Ireland and this masterpiece were recorded by Andy (vocals/guitar), Michael (bass), Fyfe (drums) and Nowhere was the single that drew my attention to the band. This Sucker is a high watermark of early alternative punk/metal, spectacular, powerful and a clutter-free record and it got them some attention in the commercial world, but other than that, this album is the best and most haunting thing they've ever done in my opinion. Dynamic songs with excellent songwriting that the Nineties needed. A review: "Densely packed at fourteen songs in forty minutes, there's sharpness on every level, demonstrating that the promise evidenced on Nurse was no mirage. Chris Sheldon's job on the boards provides separation among all the instruments, avoiding the mashed effect from Therapy?'s previous outings. Fyfe Ewing and Michael McKeegan basically do what they've been doing all along as a rhythm section, but the increased clarity really allows for one to fully appreciate their abilities. Andy Cairns' vocal range and ear for melody increase tenfold, and his guitar takes on countless tones and textures only hinted at before. Detractors might claim that the riffs are too predictable and too "metal," which is somewhat understandable but ultimately unfair. One could call them simple, and one could call them focused; it's more the latter. Since the songwriting is more direct and less concerned with merely knocking things out and stopping after three minutes or so, everything is fully formed and completely realized. It's the absolute opposite of aimless, which is something Therapy? was sometimes guilty of. There's much more variety, too. With each play, it becomes increasingly obvious that no two songs sound much like each other, yet each song hangs together to form a singular piece. Metal-phobes can't help but give in to the irresistable pop-punk hooks of "Screamager" and "Nowhere." An obvious influence is acknowledged in a storming version of Joy Division's "Isolation," which pays tribute and transforms at the same time. "Unrequited" can't be missed, featuring a rattling guitar riff that gets yanked away by a violent cello tug from Martin McCarrick." (Andy Kellman) - Should you demand for more now, I recommend a visit over to the big city where further examples of the band wait.

V/A - Blood On The ROQ! 1983
Before I dedicate myself further ripping vinyl, a short sign of life from my heated home and that it doesn't get frostier is proven by the track and band list of the following brilliant compilation by Quiet Records. Everyone should have heard one or two songs or at least you should have one record in your closet, if not... change it immediately, because almost the Crème de la Crème is waiting here, important and essential American bands and without them, Punk would be a bit poorer, in my opinion. With all its aggression and rawness captures this slab the spirit of the early wild days perfect and stands out with its quality and represents a pure gem for every record collector who loves the early sound of the west coast. Very strong piece of vinyl, with a correspondingly short playing time. Cheers!

3.Right Is Right - SHATTERED FAITH
4.1945 - SOCIAL DISTORTION

WARHEAD - One More Time In The Jail 7'' 1989
Second 7Inch by Warhead from Turin which was self-published and the last lifesign before they resurrected in 1998. They brought out two solid numbers as a temporary farewell to the Italian music scene and left many of their fans with fond memories (but they wasn't really quiet). In 1991 Warhead began gathering previously unreleased material from studio and live performances for their end-of-decade project, two years later they released the Ten Years On The Road tape for the clubs, signalling their return to the circuit with a new rhythm section, and they were now truly in mainstream psychedelic Hard Rock, but that's another story. In any case, not the typical hardcore stuff, rather decent mid-tempo punkrock is their passion and the four manage to improve your mood, especially if you just got out of jail. FEHLGEBURT - Abtreibung EP 1987
Fehlgeburt is a three piece from Berlin and members were Flori (vocals/bass), Kai (guitars), David (drums) and this is their debut EP on Stumpfpunkplatten which came in an edition of 1000 copies. Sixteen minimalistic but consistently attractive numbers have the three with Abtreibung created and Punk from the capital certainly stands for a rough & aggressive sound, but Fehlgeburt demonstrate a refreshing and individual twist on it with their boisterous, youthful songs and engaging lyrics. In 2017, a flexi (250 copies) with five other lost recordings and a compilation Kotzdale Berlin (300 copies) were released by Hörsturzproduktion and I think I used to have it, but I can't find it anymore. Egal, this EP is authentic and hearty stuff.

ARSON - White Folks 7'' 1979
Five piece from Toronto hereby invite you to listen to their only great & rare 7Inch on Motor Records, which was released in a limited edition of 900 copies, and since I can't talk about the How’s, Why’s and Wherefore’s, because I wasn’t there at the time, I found a small but shiny & informative anecdote from someone who knows better, here we go: In 1977, at the height of the punk rock pandemic that was effortlessly engulfing the globe, vocalist and composer Rude Tuesdai fortuitously joined forces with guitarist Marcel Lafleur to begin a musical friendship that has spanned more than three and a half decades and spawned the incendiary band ARSON, the rest of the gang were Chic (guitars), Spyke (bass), Mike (drums). Ask anyone who’s ever heard them live and they’ll tell you that ARSON sonically sutures the Detroit destruction of the Stooges and MC5; the New York noise of the Velvet Underground and New York Dolls; and the British brainpower of the Stranglers and Clash. I could go on, so I will. Arson has independently toured all across North America and played countless concerts in a myriad of notorious rock’n’roll breeding grounds like New York, Detroit, and Chicago while sharing stages with (and stealing spotlights from) much influential legendary luminaries as the Dead Boys, Misfits, Suicide, Troggs, Destroy All Monsters, etc…. Meanwhile, Rude and Martin continued to douse the band’s smoldering ashes with new songs until the time was right to finally tap their past and craft a contemporary sound containing the unflinching fury of their earlier incarnation.
Aided and abetted by John Sutton (Weakerthans) on bass and David Quinton (Mods, Dead Boys, Stiv Bators) on drums, Arson recently recorded an in depth profile for Toronto radio station CIUT while recent concerts have garnered a whole new generation of rave reviews. That not hyperbole, that’s a fact and you can take it from me because I actually was there back in 1977 at the height of the punk rock heyday. So who you gonna believe: me or your own ears? (Bio by Jeffrey Morgan)
Two amazing songs and really too little for a talented band like Arson.
