VONBRIGÐI - Kakófónia 1983

We get a bit darker and wavier now with this combo from the far north of Europe, into the land of geysers, ice, unspoiled landscapes and snow: Vonbrigði from Reykjavík, The band was founded in 1980 by brothers Árni (guitar) and Þórarinn Kristjánsson (drums) and Gunnar E. Knudsen (bass). Shortly thereafter, singer Jóhann Vilhjálmsson came to. The band lasted until 1983. During this time they released two platten, the debut record Vonbrigði and the mini-album Kakófónía. This on Gramm records has seven so called post-punk goodies in luggage and I can't write more because I'm so fuckin' hungry and I need a damn good breakfast but it remains to be said, this is an excellent record! Now I will leave home to get a delicious goodie... enjoy the weekend and stay wild!

V/A - Bloodstains Across Europe #2 2000

One more today and let's have a look on Europe. On this trip we're back in the years 1978-1982 and meet fifteen rare punk blasts with dirty sound and useless lyrics which no one wants listen to. The Scandinavian region is here the most represented because the people there have nothing better to do as make nasty noises in any cellars to terrorize decent well-behaved neighbors. Even in the south the so-called outsiders leads to this tradition and celebrates gruesome sounds too. Occasion for another civil war? NO, simple punkrock we named it and have you a problem with us fuck your brains. Don't miss Volume 1 of this horrible music. I love you too...

PURRKUR PILLNIKK - EhgjI En: 1981

A leap in the far north and we meet Purrkur Pillnikk, an amazing band from late punk era from Iceland. The band existed for eighteen months (1981–1982) and were very active, they released at least two albums and one live record and two EP's. The distinguishable character of the band were Einar Örn's howling and off-key singing and his lyrics that most often described very day-to-day things but with a lot of interwoven angst. Members of the band later found themselves in KUKL and 1986 in the Sugarcubes. The band toured Britain in fall 1982. This is their debut album on Gramm records with seventeen short crackers with simple guitar riffs which is fuckin' PERFECT!! Search this blog for more. And now two new records arrived and they wanna be digitized immediately... I Love Saturdays! - See you in Walhalla.

TAPPI TÍKARRAASS - Miranda 1983

Tappi Tíkarrass was a famous Icelandic punk/pop band and the name Tappi Tíkarrass, which in Icelandic means “Cork The Bitch’s Ass” was given after Jakob’s father claimed that the band’s music “fitted like a cork in a bitch’s ass”. Tappi Tíkarrass combined elements of punk and pop music to create an exotic post punk with references to Siouxsie and the Banshees and the first stage of The Cure. Miranda was released in December 1983 and with this album the band switched their music style to more pop melodies and mellow songs counteracting their previous punkish Bítið Fast í Vítið EP in 1982. Also in this album, vocalist Eyþór Árnalds was replaced in most of the songs, performing only two tracks: the title song and another version called “Mýrin Andar”. The inner sleeve featured handwritten lyrics of “Mýrin Andar” and a black and white child illustration by Björk. All in all a nice album with fourteen poppy songs, not bad.

V/A - Nobody's Perfect EP 1986

One more rare record from my Wanted-List now. The first issue was released as Lasta-EP II by ST-Records in 1984 with different artwork and this here two years later on Leukemia Records. Musically, we are in Europe (except Bill Of Rights) and approaching a slightly aggressive sound that we all know as punkrock. I think the band names speak for themselves and every song is a typical representative of this genre: loud + rough + snappy! Each band puke in their natural language which I always enjoy, even if I don't understand a word. Four mid-tempo goodies and three short rapid heart attacks, what you want more? Probably appeared in small editions and hard to find... pull now!

1.I Miei Occhi - STIGMATHE
2.The Frontline - ZERO POINT
3.Efialtis - ADIEXODO
4.Paranoja - OPDAKI CIVILIZACIJE

UTANGARÐSMENN - Geislavirkir 1980

April, in the far north, back to Tomanien. I love the Scandinavian Punk Culture and I would like to introduce you to another classic: Utangarðsmenn (The Outsiders) was a Icelandic punk band, they were active from 1980 to 1981, outside a brief return in 2000. The band was composed Bubbi Morthens, Mick Pollock, Danny Pollock, Magnús Stefánsson and round Erlingssyni. The band’s only studio album, "Geislavirkir" (Radioactive), was released in November 1980 and has since become a classic, sung in icelandic & english. On it the band runs through guano rock ditties such as “Hiroshima”, with catchy chorus. The band was, along with Fræbbblunum, one of the most punk rock band in the country in 1980. In 2001 came out a collection record released by Bad Taste. A special album from the far north island underground. Essential...really. B.t.w. one more Iceland Punk stuff on the cool PhoenixHairpins blog. Get this too.

PPPÖNK - PP. EP 1997

Here’s a blast from the Icelandic underground past. The band started in 1997 with an exchange student named Benjamin Jay Kline, who studied in Flensborg High School. He had agreed to partake in the school’s singing competition, with his own song. When the time came he decided to go to the movies instead and asked his “sister”, Laufey, to sing it instead, to which she agreed. The school band had one Freyr Gígja on guitar and Guðni on drums, and their co-operation proved so fun that they decided to continue, and recruited Nonni on guitar and Bjössi on bass. While waiting for the drummer on their first practice, a chap they knew named Kjartan was out walking his dog, and dropped in on a visit. He sat behind the drum-kit, counted in, and thus the band was fully formed. The band had one popular song, called “Surferboy” which got on some charts, and was released on a compilation CD called “Drepnir”. Then Freyr dropped out and Gísli Árnason took his place. The Sugarcubes’ label Bad Taste got wind of them and released this awesome 8 Song EP in 1997.

V/A - Bloodstains Across The World 1999

Amazing assortment of rare stuff from around the world on this Bloodstains compilation and it is truly remarkable where all finest punk rock was celebrated. When the songs have been recorded no one takes care and the bands disappeared quickly in the vast ocean and today their 7inches are highly sought and fuckin' costly. Crazy World or ???? Anyway, without www and music junkies around the world we never came in touch with those goodies. This record proves that. Rokk í Reykjavík was the soundtrack to the Icelandic TV documentary directed by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson during 1981-82 winter and released in 1982. Bands such as Þeyr, Tappi Tíkarrass (a band led by singer Björk), Egó, Purrkur Pillnikk (with Einar Örn Benediktsson as the front-man), among others, were considered some of the most important bands at the moment, exclusively live material. TAPPI TÍKARRASS - Bitið Fast Í Vitið EP 1982

Tappi Tíkarrass was a famous Icelandic punk/pop band which added elements of funk, disco and jazz to their music, marking a difference from other traditional bands at that time. The band is also considered the first serious music project of now renowned singer Björk Guðmundsdóttir. Bítið Fast í Vítið, which in Icelandic could be translated as 'Take a Firm Bite of Hell or Put Your Teeth Firmly into Hell', was the debut EP released in 1982 by Spor label, it was their first work after the band had formed by the end of 1981 and with five tracks, it featured a song in English titled "London". This release, is the most punk-oriented work of the band if compared to their following and last release in 1983 called Miranda.

PURRKUR PILLNIKK - No Time To Think EP 1982

Further with more viking stuff here. Yet, the last release by these awesome punks from Iceland with four extremly weird cool songs. Again released via Gramm Records in 1982 and here on it the hymn 'Surprise' which is a short snotty punk track as a punk song should be and 'For Viewing', a rhythmic thunderhall number. And when i listen to the singer, I always think of volcanic eruptions. He's absolut brilliant. The use of a saxophone is also a highlight here. This was posted on WDR on May 2011 an maybe other stuff of Purrkur Pillnikk follows soon. It's sunny weather outside so i leave you with this today.
