VOID SECTION - Virus 1995

Classic melodic punkrock from one of the oldest -still active- Belgian bands. Void Section find its roots back in 1989. "They from the Antwerp/Heist-op-Den-Berg and they are one of the oldest melodic punkrockbands of Belgium and they are already active for about 15 years, spewing out fast and catchy punkrocktunes. Having played with bands like NO FX, Bad Religion, Ten Foot Pole and so many other classic punkrockbands, they've gained a loyal fanbase that feels related to the music this combo is playing. Void Section has released several albums in the past, working together with various record labels like Tune records or the Brussels based I Scream records, but were looking for a label where they would feel part of the family and that's how they got hooked up with funtime records. With labelmates/punkrock collegues like Five Days Off, Homer, Cranck or Shandon, they're more than motivated to join the punkrocktrain. In october of 2003, Void Section has spend a month in the Grindhouse Studio to work on their new album. This album is their 2nd, released on Tune Records and is a blistering collection of fifteen melodic punkrocksongs." (info from Funtime Records).

THE KIDS - Naughty Kids 1978

Back to the 70s and let's discover Belgium. The second album makes as seamlessly continue where the first left off, all thirteen songs could have been as yet able to do on it but probably they wanted to allow the fans a little break. With "Naughty Kids" shows us THE KIDS that they lost not their power Punk Rock & Roll... released on Fontana Records and a lot of unoffical re-releases show how great this album is... awesome!

V/A - Powerpoppers Vol.1 2001

So my weekends starts now and it's time for more excellent stuff: On The Run Records released this unoffical compilation with fourteen rare PowerPop goodies at the beginning of the new millennium. Healthy mix of melodic mid-tempo and slower tracks (focused linguistically about love), a few records are post here before so use the serach function for them. Again nice colored artwork with all the information you need on the back cover. This is Volume 1 but I don't know if there's a second one, maybe you more?

V/A - Rock Rally 1980

Don't know if this record comes out as a result of a song contest but it seems almost to be. There's a lot of letters on the back cover in French so I'm not sure but I think these tell the story about this record. Released via Lark Records and full with twelve rare goodies and I know only two of them, Red Zebra and Revenge 88. Musically is all what I call underground music right there and I particularly like the cover which was made by Joost Swarte, a dutch cartoonist and graphic designer. Pull up the tunes in and a have sunny Sunday.

1.Colder - THE MACHINES
2.Don't Wait - THE SINGLES
3.Postcard Babies - THE SWEETIES

V/A - Bite It! 12'' 2006

Now a record, I think, which every collector's heart pumps faster (or not your fuckin' gits) and what I doesn't held often in my shaky hands. Six bands with six exclusive songs which were only published here. The 12'' is packaged in a special "shoppers"-board, this provided with beautiful colored on a silk screen cover and was limited to 200 copies. Musically we hear punkrock from four nations. Two of these sounds a little pop, and with Amos (Iranian descent - very interesting) is a small underground pop star right at the start. What bothers me, there's no any info or lyrics inside & that's make the whole box unkind again (yes, I'm very very critical and that makes me surly). Presumably the label Sounds Of Subterrania went out of money ... whatever. All in all, a successful whole and a nice idea. This is 100% sub-culture and I think that counts, maybe you like it :))

1.Eye One Two - COLUMBIAN NECKTIES
2.Try Let It Go - THE CARNATION
3.If I Was A Car - THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES
4.I Don't Want You No More - HARA-KEE-REES
5.There Is A Voice (925 Remix by Synth Lio) - TWO-STAR HOTEL
6.Number One - AMOS

SEXY BOLLOCKS - What's In A Name EP 1983

In the early punk days a lot of bands (The Kids, Chainsaw, X-Pulsion, Mad Virgins..) belong to the history of Belgium's punk. Most of those bands are quick defunkt and after 1978 there were hardly any more punk releases. In 1980-1981, there were several post-punk records which were interesting and all started as punkbands and remained so in spirit, even when their music changed. But compared to Germany or Holland, punk in Belgium was always less of a phenomena. In the beginning of 1983, the first attempts were made to change this. Punk Etc., the first Belgian punk label was founded. One of these bands, Sexy Bollocks, released this great five song EP. Classic '77 punk rock mixed with a touch of hardcore and the aggressive voice makes this unique EP immortal. Not much info I found in the net but this band fuckin' rules. And with two more songs they are present at the awesome Bloodstains Across Belgium Vol.3 compliation. So listen and feel the anger of this vital short-lived band.

FUNERAL DRESS - I'm In Love With Oi! 1995

"Ahhh..!" what a hammer record, a friend lent it to me finally and I directly ripped it. Funeral Dress is a street punk band from Belgium who formed in 1985 and here are songs from this period, mixed with new stuff and some covers (Watch Your Back, Young Punx Go For It...). Alone "Getting Pissed" or "The World We Live In" are worth to praise this Album. In my personal Top-Twenty punk albums this Fucker is located near the top. ;>

V/A - Double Shot 1991

An interesting record is the cooperation between the Greek label Wipe Out! Records and the Belgian Boom! Records which had in early nineties this idea. The chance for bands from both countries to snag a little attention. Musically very quite varied, whether punk, alternative, ska and wave - everything therewith. I would say the perfect sound for a train or bus ride, coz you won't go quick aggressive, you know. Artwork and infos are even cool and so overall a double shot of firing songs.

THE DIRTY SCUMS - Dirty Songs 1985

Punkband The Dirty Scums was formed by Dirty Pik around Christmas 1981 and the bands first gig was played on 6.March 1982 and since then one of Belgium's oldest, most active and most independent punkrockband. In 1984 and 1985 they published their own fanzine that contained articles as well on music as on politix. The band sprayed all over the Flemish part of Belgium and became one of the main bands of the second Belgian punkboom together with others like Zyklome A, Capital Scum, Sponky Business, etc. In 1985, The Dirty Scums released their first album which was then the second album of this Belgian punkscene (the first one was made in 1984 by Zyklome A). It was the first album in a long line of products which were all released on their own independent label Dirty Records. It contains twelve so-called '77 Punk songs, one of which ("Martens, Jij Ouwe Rukker") becomes a culthit. The album was recorded in a rush time, which wasn't very good for the quality of the recordings, but the album sold quite well in Belgium. Live, they brought a great atmosphere among the punks in the audience and especially their music and lyrics are there to sing along, no macho stuff, born in the gutter/the streets, ordinary boys which found their own style. Yet, they don't lose heart and will pursue to death.

V/A - Everything Is Shit: Punk In Brussels 1977-1979

OK, now we come to another highlight earlier punk history in Europe. We cross the border to the left and find our neighbors from Belgium. There was in the glory days of the end 70er hard going on and it's amazing how many bands there join the punk movement and spit out a few records. Well, the title of this compilation reflects the feelings at this time and today is certainly seen global perspective as aptly. In Brussels, it was a handful of venues, improvised concerts, a few dozens of people recognizing each other, and a festival that gathers everyone: the First Belgian Punk Contest, at the Vieux Saint-Job, on 18 March 1978. Since these bands had very short lifespans, there were a lot of interactions while other configurations gave birth to key bands of the next decade. The 7inches are now damned rare and very hard to find, this record is filled with stuff we all know and a few things that hardly anyone knows so far. If you like the Bloodstains Belgium section and the Bloody Belgium Bootleg then is this piece of cream perfect. Can't tell if this is a Bootleg record and sadly there are no info-sheets inside but all in all an awesome release and a must have!!!

One more fine compilation here with this unoffical release. No label, no info, no credits. Anyway, as long as the tunes can swing my lame ass. Full with rare stuff from Belgium and France and you know what explosive material comes from there. The song selection is quite good, Pogo is guaranteed. BELGIAN ASOCIALITY - s/t LP 1989

OK, let's end this hot Tuesday with a pretty cool hardcore album by Belgian Asociality. The group formed in Mechelen/Keerbergen in 1988 and provides a free demo first. The occupation of the group consisted of Mark Vosté (vocals), Patrick "Vlie" Van Looy (guitar), Tom Lumbeeck (bass) & Chris Raffo (drums). They sing mainly in Flemish and play short powerful songs in a style that can best be described as a basis of rumble punk which in the course of the years several influences/styles are added, such as metal, gospel and ska. "The band members are known for their uncanny sense of humor and a habit of pulling weird stunts especially during live performances. The most popular track of the album was “Belgian Asociality” named after the band itself. The lyrics were in Dutch and give the audience a clear example of the whacky nature of the band. A translated rhyme from the chorus of the song is as follows: “The Belgian Asociality, that is not a joke. We take us very serious, we are such handsome blokes. What others think of us, well never mind that and if they think we are bad, they will not say that twice” (Globerover 2010). This is their brilliant debut album, released at Punk Etc. and is full with 21 plenty heart attacks. Put it in your ear!

RED ZEBRA - I Can't Live In A Living Room EP 1980

Another rare piece is the next one and I promise: You will love all three songs. Red Zebra is a Belgian post-punk group from Bruges and they started at the end of the 70's and have the following members: Peter Slabbynck (vocals), Geert Maertens (lead guitar), Sam Claeys (second guitar and bass guitar) and Johan Isselee (drums). Originally the band was called The Bungalows but after some time they changed their name into Red Zebra. In 1980 they had their biggest hit 'I Can't Live In A Living Room' which was released via Zebra Records and this was their first release and today still a punk classic. With their big hit, Red Zebra also had their international breakthrough as a 'small band' from Belgium. In 1986 Red Zebra decided to quit and each member took a different direction in music. But with the release of the compilation CD 'From Ape To Zebra' in 1992 and the continuing pressure and demand by fans for a reunion-tour, the 5 original members decide in 1994 to start touring again and even to make new material. Also their new material became a great success. In 2000 Red Zebra celebrated their 20th anniversary of their hit song in Bruges at a unique concert for their fans with old and new material. The group still exists and also has a related project today, namely The John Lennon Rifle Club.

THE SCABS - So Called Friends 7'' 1981

The Scabs are a Flemish band that were founded by Guy Swinnen (vox+guitar), Frank Saenen (drums), Fons Symons (bass) and Willy Willy (guitars) 1981 in Diest and had their greatest successes in the late eighties and early nineties. The original line-up of the band was composed in 1979. Strongly influenced by the British punk sound of the late 1970s; they were sometimes referred as the Belgian answer to the Clash. The first single 'So Called Friends' appeared 1981 on Refused Records. After two self-produced singles, the group signed a record deal with EMI. After the 12inch 'Here's To You Gang!' and the less successful debut album 'For All The Wolf Calls' they leave EMI and move to the new label Play It Again Sam Records, based in Brussels and released seven albums. 1996 the Scabs were history. On the occasion of the 25th band birthday they came together again, played a few concerts and in 2015 came their latest record 'Ways Of A Wild Heart' out. That's the short story. I like their first two singles best because these cuts are excellent punk killers, sound & rhythm = TOP!, cool voice and 'So Called Friends' is the absolute highlight for me. Rare record and one of my favourite piece of vinyl.

P.I.G.Z. - Bloody Belgium 12'' 1978

A essential record comes right now from Belgium. The P.I.G.Z. from Kortrijk, who played a lot with The Kids & blew them regularly off stage (at least that's what the old punks from Kortrijk claim). Three tracks from their one and only record, a 12", cos it's so damn rare (their only other output is two songs on the 'Punk live, First Belgian Punk Contest' compilation album). It's from 1978, the tracks are in a different order than the labels say & it came in an originally white paper sleeve that had the Pigz name glued on it & was further hardcolored with some black. In 1978 the Pigz also participated in Humo's RockRally, Belgium's most important musical contest for upcoming bands, set up by Humo magazine. Anyway, here we have enough rough KBD punk rockers from a band which was really too short active.
