The Thought Criminals formed in 1977 and were one of those unique bands whose popularity was based on their quirkiness as well as having great songs. Emerging from Sydney in late 1977 they found themselves wrapped up in the burgeoning Punkrock scene and over the course of three years recorded a handful of albums, singles and EPs on their own Doublethink label, a true representation of the Australian D.I.Y. punk spirit of the times. On their third 7Inch are involved Bruce (vocals), Stephen (guitars), Roger (bass), Derik (drums) plus Richard (violin) & John (organ) and it's more a new wave goodie with two decent songs (also suitable for wimps) and how they sound as snotty punkrockers can you check on some compilations or visit Mr. Old Wanker & Friends. In late 1981 the band played a live show at Chequers, after which the Thought Criminals disbanded.

THE CREDITS - It's You 7'' 1979
Very rare 7Inch by the Credits from Brisbane and it was pressed in a limited edition of only 200 copies in 1979 via Thunder Productions. The band was a short-lived project of Jim (vocals/bass), Greg (guitars), Bruce (drums) who were previously active in the combo The Survivors, which attained cult status in Australia by their acknowledged popular live performances and contribution to the Lethal Weapons compilation. They were legends in their home town of Brisbane, a highly popular and adept band whose sets were mainly cool ’60s covers." Here we have two great songs, 'It's You' is a cover version of an Aussie 60s rave-up hit by Terry Dean and the flip is also worth listening. Apart from that, the three didn't appear much under the Credits, we don't even need to talk about compilation appearances.

45 GRAVE - School's Out 12'' 1984
Third single by 45 Grave on Enigma. "School's Out," a classic that everyone should know, original from Alice Cooper, and was featured as bonus track on the re-released version of the debut Sleep In Safety. The flip "Partytime" is probably the bands most well-known song, and the single version is shorter in length and notably heavier, with more smoothly flowing lyrics and a shorter introduction. Info from wiki: The song is about a five-year-old girl who is brutally raped, abused and killed by her mother and friends, and the events that followed. As Dinah explained: "It's based on a story that I read in a true crime mag. The insanity and cruelty went on. So that 'Partytime' is about child abuse but it is written as a tribute to the little girl, Sabine. The song is about what her family did to her and how she didn't deserve it".

V/A - Planet Punk #4 2005
Second and last part of Planet Punk and with Volume 3, this little self-made series is already complete. H2D#26 is another tidbit full of rare stars from international bands that are still kicking ass, much in demand and popular in our fucking disillusioned times which bring little decent music to light in my opinion. Music is like inventions, there is nothing innovative that can really impress me, hardly any wow factor or thing that I can really admire. And I would say that for almost twenty years. Speaking of music, we all hear & see the so called "combos" thrown together, the TV shows which offer only shit and are played over and over by radio stations, all this crap is boring, repetitive and only geared towards profit, commercial shit and really sucks. It's really intoxicating to get acquainted with such music as on this further fantastic compilation and to eke out an existence far away from this dead & dull society. That are the words for Sunday, Amen! Enjoy the vibes of the good ole days!

V/A - Rip Off Records Compilation 2010
Finally weekend and you already know that I always greet it with refreshing music and today I open it with a fantastic compilation with combos from the legendary short lived Belfast based label Rip Off Records (specialized mainly on PowerPop) which at the end of the Seventies a bunch of great 7Inches released that are very popular today and it's amazing that an american label named Sing Sing Records brought us this divine record in 2010. It goes without saying that the original records were released in very small editions, so this little compi is an excellent idea to keep all those great bands/songs from being forgotten in the dark oblivion of the ocean. Certainly an excellent addition to the two Bloodstains Across Northern Ireland goodies. And now I'm thirsty and I'm hissing a beer...

OVERSPILL - No Way EP 2012
No Way is the last lifesign by Overspill from Livingston/West Lothian and already ten years old. Members were Kev & Gibby (vocals), Gogs & Chick (guitars), Frank (bass), Stu (drums) and this four track piece came in 250 hand numbered copies via Intimidation Records. Very varied street punk played at a decent pace and in my favorite length of good two minutes, and they also been live very refreshing. More stuff by Overspill: a 7Inch, Who's War? (2002) and a CD-R Kono Yaroo! - otherwise I don't have more infos about the six but in this case the music speaks for itself.

ALPTRAUM GMBH - Create Confusion EP 1989
I really can't say that the following five piece from Wuppertal, Drakey & Brot (vocals), Rosi (guitars), Paul (bass), Martin (drums), wrote melodic songs.. no!, Alptraum GmbH are the inventors of loud, disturbing & gross disharmony and their only vinyl on Intelnet Records proves this clearly in four tastings. More or less talented on the instruments, the sounds scratch from the confused explosions of emotions and mix into a chaos tug, which even makes me feel to press the stop button. I wouldn't call this Hardcore, but it's kind of charming and besides the EP two tapes have been released. If you are pissed off with your job, your friends, the world or yourself, this is definitely the right soundtrack. Also represented on numerous compis, Cheers!

YTTERBIUM 70 - Futur Soldat Suisse EP 1983
Mega rare stuff from Lausanne and the story about this band goes like this: "a certain "CAM" (nickname) formed Ytterbium 70 in the 70's. In 1983, the band released this provocative and subversive EP "Futur Soldat Suisse" on Super Nova, openly promoting antimilitarism. All the songs were composed in 1979 by CAM. Pressed in France, the records got blocked for some time at Thônex's customs post because a swiss customs officer didn't want to take responsibility for letting subversive stuff into the country! It led to the temporary seizure of 2000 copies and created some buzz in the papers because cases of censorship are rather seldom in Switzerland. It finally went very smoothly as the authorities decided there weren't any reason to destroy the whole stock, fortunately for us! The single began to sell from April 1st, 1983. Nevertheless, the single was unexpectedly removed from sale only ten days after! Was the Confederation in the know? We'll probably never find out. Anyway, it explains why the record is now mega rare and can reach $300 a copy!" (source: williamtellsguitar) - Three superb killers!

SURF PUNKS - Shark Attack! 7'' 1982
Fourth 7Inch on Day-Glo Records by this crazy combo. The Surf Punks are a hilariously obnoxious and irreverent pop-punk band from Malibu, California. As both their name and such amusingly broad tongue-in-cheek songs as "No Fat Chicks," "Teenage Girls," and "Shark Attack!" suggest, the group gleefully poke fun at West Coast Southern California beach/surf culture with a winning blend of unapologetically brash rude'n'crude humor, fierce, yet still catchy pop punk musical arrangements, and a blithely immature attitude. The Surf Punks were formed by singer/drummer Dennis Dragon and singer/guitarist/keyboardist Drew Steele in 1976 (Dennis is the son of noted symphony conductor Carmen Dragon and the brother of Daryl Dragon of the popular 70's pop duo the Captain and Tannille). The other original band members are: Tony Creed (lead guitar/blues harp), John Hunt (bass), and John Heussenstamm (lead guitar). The Surf Punks released their debut single "My Beach/My Wave" in Australia on the Shelter Records label. Their 1979 self-tilted debut album became an instant cult classic. The Surf Punks released four additional albums: My Beach (1980), Locals Only (1982), Oh No! Not Them Again! (1988), and Party Bomb in 1988. The group sold out their first show at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The Surf Punks were renowned for their extremely wild and uninhibited live shows during their early 80's heyday. The band was initially supposed to appear in the 1987 comedy feature "Back To The Beach," but alas this never came to be, but they appeared as themselves in the documentaries "Skateboard Madness" and "Urgh! A Music War." (Bio by woodyanders)

LES VERMINES - Bad Childhood 1983
Now to a combo that already appeared sporadically in wdthtc on some compilations: Les Vermines from Rouen, active around 1980-1989. Line-up: White Spirit (vocals), Torchon (guitar), Ted (bass), Daniel (drums) and this is their amazing debut on Rive Gauche Records. Bad Childhood is peppered with eleven superb candy canes. Info: To history and purists, punk has only lasted for a season. In 1977, the death knell had already sounded. This did not prevent the Vermines from continuing the adventure in the 80s with two albums in their own juice worthy of the best English productions of the good era. Adopting the language of the Queen of England, the group doesn't seem to care about this detail of the story and rushes headlong into a punk à la Sex Pistols and Ramones from which they also cover the title Blitzkrieg Bop and Warhead by the UK Subs on this album. The Rouen scene can be proud of these boys and you can convince yourself by the excellent songwriting and the amazingly good quality of these four. Recorded & mixed in twenty-two hours during summer 1983. They left two albums, a 7Inch and a tape for posterity, plus some compilation appearances. Brilliant debut in every way!
