CRANES - Adoration 7'' 1991

Now we take the tempo a bit down and come to a band that I really adore. Formed in 1986 in Portsmouth/England by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw, and named after the many mechanical cranes around the city's docks, Cranes are best known for the childlike, high-pitched vocals of lead singer Alison. Cranes are a UK band often remembered for touring the USA with The Cure in 1992. Since then they have acquired a loyal fan base around the world, who seem to find perfection in everything they do - whether it be fierce, sometimes stark guitar sounds of early albums like Wings Of Joy, Forever or folk-inspired Future Songs release. Cranes first album Self Non Self had a peculiar intensity which seemed all the more unusual at the time. John Peel picked up on the album right away, with the group recording a session for him in the album's first week of release. Some intense media interest followed and shortly afterwards the group signed to Dedicated-BMG and went on to record a lot of beautiful albums.

The band's music has been described as "gothic minimalism", although the band themselves disputed the 'gothic' tag. They have also been described as dream pop. In the early 1990s they were briefly lumped in with the "shoegazing" bands of the era. Much has been made of Alison Shaw's vocals, with descriptions ranging from "the helium tones of a small child", "baby-doll-voiced", and "a mewling, childish wisp of a voice". One reviewer described the band: "Imagine a small child singing lullabies at the bottom of the well with a background of grinding guitars".

V/A - Neues Deutschland 1990

Another good record which I think apparently in the scene and not warmly accepted is this one. It is offered everywhere cheap and I don't know why. Maybe it lies partially at the band names which sounds jocularly or the cover looks worse or something like that... however, this compilation kicks & sounds not really funny at all. Almost all songs are exclusive and shortly after the german reunification, A.M. Music (none of my favourite labels) has published this little pearl. The lyrics quite offensive, political & personal, nevertheless sometimes funny as well (Hannen Alks) and musically perfect melodic punk sound. The arrangement of west & east bands works. All in all is this compilation a small piece of german subculture.

Pooh...what a soccer match against Darmstadt but in the end a deserved victory and important three points against relegation. - Last post today brings us to the States and this compltaion is a further nugget of excellent kbd stuff. Smashers from rare 7Inches which move my ass and this piece is one of my favourite record. All infos inside, perfect artwork (very colorful) and no failure. So I would do it as well. At the end of the record the underdogs from Spain there, perhaps a tribute to the Oi! 4 album. So let's kill brains with Lost Punk Hits From The Americas 1977-1982. V/A - Soundtracks Zum Untergang 1980

Start today, in my opinion with the best German punk compilation ever: the first release of the Berlin label AGGRESSIVE ROCKPRODUKTIONEN (AGR). Full with rare stuff from bands which release a lot of good records and on this vinyl are seventeen hits! Offensive, hard, very good lyrics, straight to the point and a good artwork. Some idiots bothered by two dittys and submitted an application for indexing and got right.... the plate was removed and all other releases were with beeps accompanied (MCF #1 and Slime #6), so simple subculture was then dismembered. Well, the uncensored are rare and expensive, but every damn penny worth. Two years later Volume 2 comes out with more new German bands, more hits and it's, without question, also great, Deutsche Wertarbeit!

1.Helden - MIDDLE CLASS FANTASIES

BITCH BOYS - A'Capella Schumacher EP 1981

From Stockholm comes another great punk band called the Bitch Boys and they were formed in 1978. They disbanded in 1981 after several songs. They also did some gigs and had plans for more, but due to memberproblems it all died. They reunited again in 1994 and re-recorded all the old songs again on a compilation album called "Vi Är Trötta På Att Vara Bäst". The name of the band is a parody of the Beach Boys. The band played angry & funny stuff and you can hear it quite well. A rare release and again I thank the noble contributor who sent me this little piece of vinyl. And because I'm a nice guy I packed their first 7Inch 'Häftig Fredag' from 1979 within.

HJERTESTOP - Vi Ses I Helvede 2008

I love denmark punk and Hjertestop had the raw snotty elements and the amazing melodies (like No Hope For The Kids or Gorilla Angreb). This is the loooong awaited debut album from the K-town heroes and of course expectations are higher than Amy Winehouse on a night out in Camden. Ten raging new hardcorepunk blasts in the vein of early 80s classic American Hardcore like Reagan Youth or D.I., but essentially it's the magnus opus of the K-town scene. They are pure perfection, packed with piss and vinegar yet fiercely catchy and memorable. A more than worthy follow up to the debut 'Vi Ses I Helvede' here are Twenty-Three minutes of pure hardcorepunk bliss. If you think Danish punk reached it's peak around 'Pære Punk', you're basically full of shit and in desperate need of psychiatric help. This record is the proof.
