PARAF - A Dan Je Tako Lijepo Počeo 1980

Moving to Ex-Yugoslavia and meet Paraf, together with Pekinška Patka one of my favourite band and this is their debut record on RTV Ljubljana with fourteen sophisticated jewels.

Paraf was a punk rock and later post-punk band from Rijeka, Croatia, known as one of the pioneers of punk rock in the former Yugoslavia. Following the expansion of punk rock in Europe, teenagers Valter Kocijancic (guitar, vocals), Zdravko Cabrijan (bass) and Dušan Ladavac "Pjer" (drums) formed Paraf in 1976. They played their first gig at Belvedere in Rijeka on December 31, 1976. The band's early live appearances were at Rijeka high-school parties along with the bands of similar musical orientation, Termiti, Protest and Lom. During the late 1978, the band started performing frequently, even outside Rijeka. They played in Ljubljana, Belgrade, Zagreb. The band also performed at the Novi Sad BOOM festival, as well as an opening act for The Ruts concert in Zagreb. In 1979, they released their debut single "Rijeka", a cover version of the Ramones song "Chinese Rocks", but Kocijancic signed as the song author in order to test the Yugoslav critics of the time. Despite the intention, it was the Dzuboks magazine journalist Petar Lukovic who recognized that the song was a cover version. The band also appeared on the various artists compilation album Novi punk Val 78-80, released by ZKP RTLJ in 1980, with the song "Narodna Pjesma" ("Folk Song").

After several delays, the band debut album A Dan Je Tako Lijepo Poceo... (And The Day Started Out So Nicely...) was released by ZKP RTLJ in the Spring of 1980. Due to provocative lyrics, the album was classified as kitsch product, and thus liable to additional taxation, despite subsequent changes to some of the lyrics as well as the selection of a different album cover. In line with the punk rock ideology, the band addressed several topics which were at the time new to the Yugoslav rock: the songs featured ironic usages of communist slogans, mocked, at the time, one of the most popular bands, Bijelo Dugme, in the song "Pritanga I Vaza", insulting the police in the censored version of "Narodna pjesma", and dealt with social themes typical for a port city. The album was produced by the band's close associate Goran Lisica "Fox", assisted by Igor Vidmar. (source: parafrijeka.blogspot)

V/A - WienmusikK 1981

Last post for this month and it belongs to our dear nice neighbors, this fine and rare compilation is one more a great punk/synth/avantgarde release from Austria which came out via Schallter Records. Very weird noises and electronics plus a few punk tracks can be heard and it's again, like Die Tödliche Dosis record, a interessting mix of the early underground scene from Austria's beautiful capital city Vienna, varied, charmin' and for all those who like to discover new music styles just right. Although no big hits on it but absolutely worth hearing. And this is the tingly stuff for this awesome Blog! - Hell Yeah!

V/A - Double Shot 1991

An interesting record is the cooperation between the Greek label Wipe Out! Records and the Belgian Boom! Records which had in early nineties this idea. The chance for bands from both countries to snag a little attention. Musically very quite varied, whether punk, alternative, ska and wave - everything therewith. I would say the perfect sound for a train or bus ride, coz you won't go quick aggressive, you know. Artwork and infos are even cool and so overall a double shot of firing songs.

THE DIRTY SCUMS - Dirty Songs 1985

Punkband The Dirty Scums was formed by Dirty Pik around Christmas 1981 and the bands first gig was played on 6.March 1982 and since then one of Belgium's oldest, most active and most independent punkrockband. In 1984 and 1985 they published their own fanzine that contained articles as well on music as on politix. The band sprayed all over the Flemish part of Belgium and became one of the main bands of the second Belgian punkboom together with others like Zyklome A, Capital Scum, Sponky Business, etc. In 1985, The Dirty Scums released their first album which was then the second album of this Belgian punkscene (the first one was made in 1984 by Zyklome A). It was the first album in a long line of products which were all released on their own independent label Dirty Records. It contains twelve so-called '77 Punk songs, one of which ("Martens, Jij Ouwe Rukker") becomes a culthit. The album was recorded in a rush time, which wasn't very good for the quality of the recordings, but the album sold quite well in Belgium. Live, they brought a great atmosphere among the punks in the audience and especially their music and lyrics are there to sing along, no macho stuff, born in the gutter/the streets, ordinary boys which found their own style. Yet, they don't lose heart and will pursue to death.

MAHO NEITSYT - Ottaa Päähän EP 1991

Maho Neitsyt (Infertile Virgin) is a punk band from Kouvola, south-eastern Finland, whose members were originally Kuusankoski, founder Pexi Kouvola. Long-term bassist Örkky found Vantaa Birch Village. Mahon is a soloist of the Virgin Pexi. In addition, Mahossa Virgo have rung, inter alia, Bosses and Örkky. Maho Neitsyt known songs include "They did not sell me booze," "What my head choppy?", "Punk, punk rock, punk," "nuclear-free cemetery" and "Donald Duck pregnant." The band name was born when Pexi sent Dandruff magazine reader survey Finnish local punk bands in response to the band (by then it was not there) called possibly the Virgin. Dandruff, the editorial read the answer wrong, and was named Infertile Virgin. This band brings what I call awesome stuff. Short songs, catchy guitars and what I total like is the brilliant finnish language with a lots of Ääääääää's, I must learn finnish. Here we have three kbd style punkrock smashers which demand playin' again & again.

KLOTZS - m 2001

Tonight in Frankfurt again my friends from Klotzs and I'm already looking forward to a pleasant Wiedersehen. Klotzs is a band from Siegen, founded in 1995. Their music can be described as an emotional noise punk rock. Their kind of style lies in the EA80 flavour, proved by a lot of concerts with them and a common split 7Inch. After numerous 7'' + EP's (Strafraum EP), they have released their first album in 2001 via Kill Me! Records and this comes with ten noisy punk rock attacks and they form a great music, although by EA80 often reminded but they have enough autonomy to be convincing. They have talent to write complex catchy songs they have on top of that. And maybe it's just this ability which they share with EA80, and not just similar, very intense, melancholic and powerful music. In this style Klotzs friends are determined break down open doors. For me they are already in the living room with their very loud sound and impressive appearances. Great Record at least and worth every tone, so don't miss them alive!!

V/A - 14 Songs For Greg Sage & The Wipers 1993

One more true gem for a band I like a lot: This is a Wipers tribute album which was originally released as a box set of four colored 7-inch records by Tim/Kerr Records in 1992. 1993 comes this CD re-release of the album, expanded to include six additional artist covers. The Wipers were a influential punk band that began in Portland, Oregon in 1977. Greg Sage lead the group to recording many "underground" albums that created a small yet humble following with their songs about hardship, pain and frustration. This is a bunch of covers of Wipers songs, as you might have guessed. All the covers are really well done and pay a positive tribute. Quality music for any Wipers maniac.

V/A - War Is Insanity! 1996

Here we come to a compilation which I couldn't get any info in the World Wide Web. This shows either how rare and old this record is or little attention has been paid so a reason to change this and pay tribute to me, hahaha ..... Ok, this cool vinyl is a label co-production of the german KnockOut and Banda Bonnot Records from Italy and was released in 1996. The A Side comes along with knotless Oi! Street Punk while the B side, mainly Italian bands here, shine with a refreshing ska sound. So my ass can not sit still and I know your ass will go the same way. So stay clean, enjoy the music and be fair to all the skinheads in the world, I mean the real skinheads you know.

A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS - s/t LP 1982

Next one is a post from a band which I listen a lot in my school days and so I wanna post their debut record here. A Flock Of Seagulls was started by Mike Score and his brother Ali in 1979 in Liverpool. Mike, who was previously a hairdresser, played keyboards, guitar, and vocals, Ali played drums and their friend Frank Maudsley played bass. The band took their name from a line in the song "Toiler on the Sea" by The Stranglers, which appears on their album 'Black And White'. The band added guitarist Willie Woo, and Mark Edmondson joined briefly when Ali and Mike had a falling out; however, Ali re-joined when Mark took ill. They then began writing songs. Soon after, Willie left, allowing Paul Reynolds to join. They then started playing clubs and eventually got a recording contract. Eventually, under the management of Tommy Crossan and Mick Rossi (Checkmount Ltd.), they began to release singles through Jive Records. The group released an EP and a couple of singles, 'It's Not Me Talking' and 'Telecommunication' on Bill Nelson's 'Cocteau' label; both tracks produced by Nelson. In 1982 the group's third single "I Ran (So Far Away)" became a worldwide hit, most notably reaching number 1 in Australia and the top 10 in the US and New Zealand (where the band became popular). The parent album A Flock of Seagulls and another single "Space Age Love Song" was also successful. Two great albums followed and in 1985 the group released a new album; Dream Come True. Despite having a new sound based around the Fairlight Synthesizer the album was critically panned and a commercial failure. The remaining members fell out and A Flock Of Seagulls in its original incarnation disbanded. Although parodied in later years, the band is now recognized as a pioneering act, capturing the zeitgeist of their time. This one is a classic with eleven wavies.

V/A - Hemliga Vågen 1980

Another rare swedish compilation is this 12'' which was released by Hemliga Bolaget Records. Six Bands, each with two songs. A perfect mix of '77 punkrock, reggae, powerpop and rock'N'roll. No failure on it. I'm always amazed how many really good bands are from Sweden and they always inspire me. Who wants to know more about the Swedish punk rock scene, I recommend Peter Jandreus's book The Encyclopedia of Swedish Punk 1977–1987 which is well written, with extensive details, all cover artworks, discography and collectors values. A real asset for every Punkrocker - And now sit down, finished the download and enjoy the music.
