A band that got little reputation is Ski Patrol from London, which founded 1979 by former The Wall and future Folk Devils singer Ian Lowery and Nick Clift of The Debutantes. Inspired by the darkwave and Punk-funk sounds and emotions of British PostPunk bands, and also influenced by the Jamaican rhythms and politically charged environment, Ski Patrol set about writing angular, moody songs that fused Lowery's dark lyrical pre-occupations with Clift's ringing guitar. Joined by fellow North-Eastern transplants Peter on bass and drummer Bruce (original drummer in The Wall), the band began playing shows at the London Circuit. They recorded four songs at Alaska Studios in Waterloo, two of which became their first singles. In early 1980, Bruce left and was replaced by Alan. More shows followed, and the four came to the attention of Malicious Damage (Killing Joke label). In June 1980, this new partnership produced the second single Agent Orange. Largely inspired by the film Apocalypse Now, Lowery's lyrics referenced the defoliant used in the Vietnam War and the song itself was built around a pulsing three-note bassline, guitar harmonics and a metronomic beat with catchy synthesizer atmospherics, the single was released later in 1980 and became their best known song, both are found in this post. In early 1981 Peter had left to join Fad Gadget, and was replaced by bassist Francis. The new line-up recorded a session for John Peel's BBC show in January 1981 and three tracks were broadcast on 19 January and repeated again later that year. A third single Cut was released on Malicious Damage in early Summer. The band's final recording session, in April 1981 yielded three new songs but none were released at the time, the band finally fell apart in August. A collection of the band's work, Versions Of A Life (Recordings 1979-1981), which includes the three tracks from the final recordings session was released in 2014. Their songs have drive and are extra class, driving and emotional and never get boring.

KILLING JOKE - Kings & Queens 12'' 1985
Yes, one more post as part of the 'Pop Classics' but we know Killing Joke differently and their heavy and slow (at least early in their career) quasi-metal sound let many fans dancing to a tune of doom and gloom. They shine with driving songs that beam you into another dimension and initially sound very Punk. The band were formed 1979 in London by Jaz (vocals/keyboards), Geordie (guitats), Youth (bass), Paul (drums) and their style emerged from the PostPunk scene, but were characterized by their harder approach and have been cited as a key influence on industrial rock & with Love Like Blood they landed a real catchy tune and became attractive in the dull society. And since I'm a bad writer, here's a solid review: "It's been a devil of a time convincing some of this band's once-ardent fans that Killing Joke are back on track in a big way with Night Time, but the excellent selections for singles off the LP have been a help. "Kings and Queens" sounds like an air raid, with Geordie's gigantic guitar reverberation thundering in your ears and Jaz Coleman's full-throated hollering taking off like a firework on July 4; in fact, the whole thing feels a little like the sound you hear at the airport as you watch a jet take off, and the chorus feels like you're being led into the planet's final battle. It's great to have them back." (Jack Rabid) - In two hours it's versus RB Leipzig, three points are needed.

KILLING JOKE - Love Like Blood 12'' 1985
A song that should be known in advance to anyone, but doesn't reflect their early days, and in my opinion, the debut album is still the best. We're talking about seminal postpunks Killing Joke and they were formed 1979 in Notting Hill by Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards), Paul Ferguson (drums), Geordie Walker (guitar) and Youth (bass). The band's musical style emerged from the post-punk scene and has been cited as a key influence on industrial rock. Their style evolved over many years, at times incorporating elements of gothic, synthpop and electronic music, often baring Walker's prominent guitar and Coleman's "savagely strident vocals". Killing Joke have influenced many later bands and artists and achieved mainstream success with their fifth album Night Time and the second single from that "Love Like Blood". Although Coleman and Walker have been the only constant members of the band, the current line-up features all four original members. They made a lot of albums and they're still alive.

ABWÄRTS - Der Westen Ist Einsam 1982
An album that I haven't heard for a long time and thanks to iNgo, I dug up this nugget and realize how great this stuff is, the second Abwärts album. It sounds somber and darker than anything that previously appeared from the four, and can certainly be viewed in the context of the emerging Gothic culture. Critics put it in line with releases by British post-punk bands such as Theatre Of Hate and Killing Joke. Band boss Frank Ziegert confessed in an interview with Diedrich Diederichsen in 1988 that Abwärts had to a certain extent been forced by the punk audience at the beginning of the 1980s not to present any sophisticated compositions: “[…] we were literally afraid to make music. Everything always had to be hard, that was the word: hard. We increased ourselves into a senseless aggressiveness that had nothing to do with us at all, I wasn't really tough all the time and neither were the others." Unsatisfied with the care of their previous independent label ZickZack Platten, the group wanted to work more professionally and offer their next album to a major label. Work on it began in the autumn of 1981 at Hafenklang Studio Hamburg. A whole month of self-financed and self-produced studio recordings was followed by a week of mixing at The Town House in London by producer Nick Launay. At the end of 1981 the album was finished, which was then offered to various record companies for publication. For an advance payment of allegedly 50.000 DM, the band finally signed with the German major label Phonogram which released first the Beirut, Holiday Inn 12" with four tracks. "Der Westen Ist Einsam" is the first band release without Margita Haberland, who left the group in 1981.
The album was released in April 1982. For publication, they went from May 11th to June 13th 1982 on an extensive tour with side trips to Switzerland and Amsterdam. The group made a spectacular appearance at the Münchner-Rocktage-Festival, at which FM Einheit destroyed parts of the stage structure. At some concerts, the newly founded Toten Hosen played the supporting act. Down, in turn, was hired as the opening act for The Cure tour. On the title "Beim Ersten Mal Tut's Immer Weh", Muscha and Trini Trimpop produced a video clip and the group even published a homestory in the youth magazine Bravo. Despite all of this, the album did not achieve the sales figures we had hoped for. As a result, FM Einheit and Marc Chung left the band for good to concentrate on the Einstürzende Neubauten, of which they had already joined as full members in 1981. In addition, drug problems also led the band to bury themselves for the first time. - And now: Bundesliga ⚽

KILLER PRALINEN - s/t 12'' 1982
Killer Pralinen is a combo from Frankfurt, my hometown, and emerged from Middle Class Fantasies, and consisted of Deo (vocals), Judas (guitars), Prinz Hulk (bass) and TG (drums) and to document the cut, they decided to change their name to Killer Pralinen. Musically, elements from the avant-garde were adopted. They moved away from the fast and hard punk style which they presented gloriously in their few publications, towards post-punk in the style of Killing Joke and UK Decay. In 1982 the band released their only 12'' on Aggressive Rockproduktionen which flopped and really disappointed the punk hearts in Germany, but now a sought-after rarity. Tensions within the band spread and they played again in front of an almost empty hall in Bochum and then dissolved. Today; after Prinz Hulk and TG so also Deo passed away a few years ago. Over the years and not least because of their participation on the first Soundtrack Zum Untergang compilation, the band became cult status of the German punkscene. Their recordings were distributed via bootlegs. In addition, some songs appeared again and again on compis, such as Party In The Gaskammer on the anti-Nazi compilation Nazis Raus!, published by Zap Fanzine and Weird System, etc.... When inquiries accumulated, Deo recorded five older but never published songs from the Killer Pralinen era together with Michael "11" Mayer and Stephan Mahler from Slime which were 2007 published on the complete discography of Middle Class Fantasies under the title Fick Dich Selbst by WS.

M.I.A. - After The Fact 1987
One of the first punk bands from Las Vegas were M.I.A. and this is their last album which came out via Flipside Records. Before I leave you with an excellent review from their homepage, briefly the note about their debut split 12'' Last Rides together with Genocide that illustrate their musical roots and is a damn big eruption (Vesuvius is kindergarten). "After the Fact is one of the best US punk records of the late 1980s, mostly because it mixes many post-punk influences and innovates where other punks cling totradition. The two guitars rarely play similar parts, there are dynamics & mood settings, contemplative sound and even a Killing Joke inspired tribal backbeat. The production on After the Fact is far superior to M.I.A.'s past efforts, with real bottom, kick, drive and guts. Check out the cover of "California Dreaming" or the effortless “Edge Of Forever” for proof that punk can be a fresh aural pleasure, even at this late date. M.I.A. ultimately paid the same price that the original TSOL and Effigies did when they went against the grain and tried to take punk to its next step: the group split up in early 1988." – Jack Rabid/Trouser Press - I would like to add; in 2001 Alternative Tentacles brought out a cool double record set called 'Lost Boys' (the first 1000 in orange) with thirty-seven rare old blasts, great stuff!

FRESHLY - Air (Quoth She) 1986
Now a re-upp from the unfortunately inactive Phoenix Hairpins blog which was first posted by Curious in 2007 and I want to adopt his words here: "Danish band Freshly originally started as Freshly Riots. As Freshly Riots they released two records. The first is the Delightfully Fresh EP in 1982. Second release is the Hope album released in 1984. This album contains eleven tracks of punk inspired by early Stranglers. For the second album 'Air (Quoth She)', they shortened the name to Freshly and went for a more postpunk sound, with some hints to Killing Joke. All records were released on their own Bondeskiver label. Another release on this label is the 'Complication' comp. slab (maybe soon) with ten punk & new wave bands from Denmark as War Of Destruction, Electric Deads and Sods." Last strong record of this great band whose music evolved from snotty punk to melodic numbers.

DESECHABLES - Maqueta 1982
First demo with nine killer tracks, released via Anarchi Records/Flor Y Nata Records. Desechables formed around 1980 in Vallirana, a village in the Barcelona suburbs where three friends got together to create one of Spain's most visceral and dirtiest primitive rock three pieces: Tere (screams), Miguel (guitar) and Dei Pei (snare and tom). In summer 1983 a few songs developed from the first sessions in which they played crazy versions of Lux Interior and Poison Ivy, Jordi, Miguel and Tere play in the II Contest International Rock of Lyon. They share the stage with Killing Joke, among others. The experience turned out to be a success. So much so, that they were invited to continue playing in Paris and Rennes. Things were getting really good for them. So well, that the bad luck that was going to accompany them throughout their career, made his first and most devastating act of presence here. Just when they were preparing to record an LP at the legendary Rock Ola in Madrid - "Maqueta" + "La Oración" - Miguel died by trying to rob a jeweler with a toy gun, shot by the jeweler himself in Villafranca del Penedés, the band ceased to exist.
Fortunately, the following year saw the release of the album "Golpe Trás Golpe", which was put together using songs from the French live shows and a performance at the Radio Pop Festival 3. The back cover includes a drawing of the members of the group made by Miguel. Miguel is replaced on the guitar by Jordi's brother, Marcelo, who had not missed a rehearsal and played since 1984 with the group, Carlos also enters and they are established as a quartet. The band recorded at the end of December 1984 in the Rock Ola room "Buen Ser-Vicio" and the provocative cover does not leave anyone indifferent. Just when they began to overcome the situation again, bad luck knocked again at the door of the Catalans: an error in the pressing of the vinyls made the recording did not pick up the forcefulness and harshness of that concert. In any case, the first editions sold out quickly.
In 1986 Desechables released "Nada Que Entender" but it would not be released until the following year and was preceded by the single "Ábreme". The single anticipated what was to come: a good production work but that perhaps too much smoothed the characteristic pointy sound of the quartet. It is here when providence intervenes once more; the disc hardly had distribution and as much Tere as the rest feel that their race does not finish taking off. In 1987 an important change takes place: Jack enters like bassist and Altolaguirre becomes definitive member of the group, although shortly after he undertakes his personal project Ángel and Las Güais and is replaced by Raúl. That same year they recorded the album "Amor Pirata", but it was too late. Just at the time when Desechables began enter the radio stations and have some fame, the band disintegrates. They would do so after their performance at the KGB in Barcelona, on November 17, 1988. Represented on numerous compilations, here are some of them: Bloodstains Across Spain and Viva La Punk! - I think a good start into the weekend!

AUSWEIS - Murnaü 1984
A restless night lies behind me and after I already ripped another record now back with rare medicine. From time to time I repost records of unfortunately inactive blogs and it's really bad that many are dead. Today one from my favorite blog and a dear friend... here are his words: "Very first release of this French band. Ausweis play great postpunk influenced by Killing Joke. The quite short and more uptempo 'Gangsters United' show their punk roots. Ausweis stirred some interest in the UK as the following records were released on UK labels: the 'Victimes' 12" on Chainsaw (label of Living In Texas) and 'Jours De Haine' 12" is the first release on Ediesta Records. You can also watch some TV appearances on their MySpace page. There is a discography CD in the works but that's already more than a year I guess. I hope it will be issued as their records are scarce and/or pricey these days. This mini-album was released on cult label L'Invitation Au Suicide and contains a lyric sheet small poster and a big poster" (Curious Guy, phoenixhairpins). Ausweis are on numerous compilations and I would be glad if somebody send me the France Profonde Vol 2 slab.

TANT BRUN - Nej 7'' 1980 + Lördakväll 7'' 1981
Late evening post by a band from Sweden and while I write I listen to the new KBD #15 compilation (no joke) but this is now irrelevant. Tant Brun were young punx and formed in Jönköping by Janne (vox & guitars), Peter (drums) and Stefan (bass). In 1978 these guys started playing with a heavy Ebba Grön influence and with help of a manager they did about a hundred gigs over just a few years, mostly at discos and youth clubs. They released two singles on Sjöbo Påpp Records in the early 80s. The first "Nej" is pretty cool '77 punk style pig while the second "Lördakväll" goes more into a PowerPop splint. Both records are very rare and one more contribution from Fredrik's awesome Swedish Punkrock collection. In 1982 they changed their style and name to Sex Machine, influenced by Killing Joke. The much more punkier first single "Nej" was distributed by Eurovision Song Contest mogul Karlsson! but for the second effort he seem to have lost interest, that is remarkable or? They were also present on the Powerpearls #9 compilation and others. I put more info from Peter's book in the file and that's all for a lousy boring Tuesday.

ÞEYR- Mjötviður Til Fóta 2001
And we stay wavie and visit the small volcanic island in the far north of Europe and find us in Reykjavík and meet Þeyr, a renowned new wave band from the early 1980s. Shrouded under a veil of mystery, their three-year existence was characterized by a deep interest in ancient wisdom. Þeyr helped bring about the new wave movement in Iceland and became one of the first Icelandic bands to be known abroad. Their music was now something very special, raw and angry, sometimes compared with works of Killing Joke or Joy Division. Their music never has been re-released as the masters are believed to be lost. However in 2001 a compilation was released called Mjötviður til Fóta. It contains songs recovered from the album Mjötviður Mær and the single Iður til Fóta, two records released in 1981. Thus, the only recorded material of the band currently available is this release, as well as some Icelandic compilations which feature a few tracks, released in 2001 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the creation of Theyr. Stolen words again but I think these describe the work of the band excellent and for that they're made by people who can do it better than me. Extra: the Life Transmission 7'' from 1981.

V/A - 23 - Nichts Ist So Wie Es Scheint 1999
Weekend once again I watched DVD and for a long time this movie: 23 - Nichts Ist So Wie Es Scheint (23 - nothing is what it seems) is about Karl Koch, who died on 23 May 1989, probably self-immolation, a hacker who drifts ever further in his numbers and conspiracy mania, based on true story (saw this February 1999 in Hamburg with my then girlfriend and was immediately impressed). The Cold War is raging the global peace movement in defiance of the world in a frenzy of fear of nuclear threat and the 19-year-old Karl Koch is whether this status quo deeply insecure. Maintenance, he finds precisely in the worship of the fictitious character of Hagbard Celine from Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus! Trilogy. About the depth study of the Illuminati theory says Karl characters identify that point to a worldwide conspiracy of economic and political forces, culminating in the all dominating number 23. At a meeting of the Chaos Computer Club, Karl gets to know the student David. David and Karl are able to hack into the global data network—which is still, at this point, in its early stages—and their belief in social justice propels them into espionage for the KGB. Driven by contacts with a drug dealer, and by increasing KGB pressure to hack successfully into foreign systems, Karl spirals into a cocaine dependency and grows increasingly alienated from David. In a drug-addled state, Karl begins to sit in front of his computer for days at a time. Perpetually sleepless, he also grows increasingly delusional. When David publicly reveals the espionage activity in which the two men have been engaged, Karl is left alone to face the consequences, collapse soon follows. Karl is taken to a hospital to deal with his drug addiction and mysteriously dies afterward. - Extremely catchy, excellent actors and 1A soundtrack and I urgently recommend you to see movie.
A really watchable German thriller.

V/A - Burning Ambitions (A History Of Punk) 1982
Burning Ambition: The History of Punk, attempts to be a definitive overview of the British (except DK) wave/punk scene in the late 70s/early 80s and while it falls short of its goals, it's nevertheless an admirable effort. The Crème de la Crème are here to honor, only classics on it. Surely some of you, like me, have the original records at home but this double album should become a favorite of yours, because this record is one of the finest punk compilations which is ever released. Love to hear all these classic songs in this order and believe me.... you will enjoy it as a good fuck.
