V/A - Punk Dead - Nah Mate.... 1983

... The Smell Is Jus Summink In Yer Underpants Innit." (whatever that means...). Yeah, this is the little musical ode by Pax Records with English bands that had their, partly, short active life span in the early Eighties, and twelve rough delicious smasher in finest sound quality await you and this compilation is another solid example of great early UK Funk. All tracks are mostly exclusive and not released on Singles or anywhere else, at least not in that time. A short review: "Is Punk dead?” The musical answer is provided by six bands from Sheffield and the surrounding area, each with two songs. All bands play British-style anarcho-hardcore punk. Mau Maus, who had just released their first two 7"s on Pax, open with the demand "Give Us A Future", followed by Xtract and Anti System, who are represented with songs from their demo tape. In their song "The Thatcher" Septic Psychos draw the picture of a monster that eats small children at night and rules the country during the day. Any resemblance to the Prime Minister at the time may have been purely coincidental. Xpozez and Mania complete the line-up of the album, which gives a little insight into the very agile punk scene in central England in the early eighties. The record comes in an elaborate gatefold cover with a typical black-and-white look. All the bands' lyrics are printed inside. Marcus Featherby, the operator of Pax, then used almost the entire area of ​​the back cover for his views on the question "Is Punk Dead?" - Now you know and fucking Thursday is saved and I'm awarding a gold medal to this little bugger.

COMPOS MENTIS - From Behind The Wall EP 1986

Well, the game yesterday was boring and I fell asleep in part enough of it and before I use the sunshine day a short trip to New Zealand. First record by Compos Mentis from Wellington, active 1983-1987, on Sound Mind Records and they were influenced by overseas bands and wrote politically charged songs that critiqued both mainstream New Zealand and the cliquey factions within the alternative music scene. Described by Simon Cottle of Anti-System zine as “New Zealand's ultimate political thrash band” Compos Mentis lasted for a good half of the 1980s at a time when a more politicised punk scene was emerging in Wellington. "Compos Mentis had no support band, so the gigs started quite late, by which time reasonable crowds had turned up, consisting mainly of “hard-cores” and skins. Compos Mentis' songs may sound fast on tape, but live they were even faster, sparking off some wild dancing, which was slightly rough, but fun all the same. With such excellent lyrics, it's a pity the vocals weren't clear ( better the second night), still, the sheer energy made up for that. The band played amazing long sets, including material off their new EP and even a Crass cover. They were sweating like crazy, but managed to continue by rotating drummers, singers and guitarists. Low points were the filth sniffing around, some jerk yelling at Heather, and someone being knocked over by a grapple, but over-all it was two excellent nights of NZ punk thrash." ANTI-SYSTEM - A Look At Life 12'' 1986

Fine music to start the gray Wednesday and again, over the channel where we meet Anti-System, a "British anarcho punk band which were formed in Bradford 1981 with a line-up of Phil (drums), George (bass), Nogsy (vocals) and Dom Watts (guitar) the band recorded a demo whose tracks found their way onto Punk Dead-Nah Mate, The Smell Is Jus Summink In Yer Underpants Innita, a Pax Records compilation. Their debut release was the five-track Defence Of The Realm EP issued in 1983, which was followed (on Reconciliation Records after the closure of Pax Records) with the No Laughing Matter album in 1985 and the A Look At Life 12'' in 1986. Like some other anarcho-punk bands of the time the band were promoters of animal rights causes, their debut EP being a benefit for animal welfare groups and prior to the recording of the A Look At Life there was a necessity for a new line-up as two of the original members had been imprisoned for various animal rights actions. Mark Keane and Michael Teale were imprisoned in 1986, shortly after recording. The band reformed in 2014." Five dynamic fetzer on a high level, clean production and "In My Eyes" is a blast.

V/A - Bollox To The Gonads - Here's The Testicles 1984

Very cool compilation on Pax Records with twelve combos, mostly from Europe, and the selection is quite okay. I mean, thirty songs on a record is not common for the time and that makes this record all more interesting. A review: "The Pax label is doing some valuable work with the best of intentions. They’ve gone international on this, the follow-up to their Punk Dead? Nah Mate compilation. This time around, they include four uropean, eight English, and one American band. Most of them are real strong and really tear it up, so don’t miss it." (Ruth Schwartz, MMR, Oct/Nov.1983) - Re-released as a cheap CD-R by Retro Records but the original is obviously better. An insert was to my knowledge not included. Enjoy!

POWERAGE & COMPOS MENTIS - Backlash! EP 1987

Influenced by overseas bands such as Crass, Discharge and Chaos UK, Compos Mentis wrote politically charged songs that critiqued both mainstream New Zealand and the cliquey factions within the alternative music scene. Described by Simon Cottle of Anti-System zine as “New Zealand's ultimate political thrash band” Compos Mentis lasted for a good half of the 1980s at a time when a more politicised punk scene was emerging in Wellington. Compos Mentis began life in 1982 as the short lived Destructive Adolescents, a teenage punk band from the Hutt Valley suburb of Silverstream, formed by Craig and David A.. After the D.A's vocalist quit Peter Stitt and Heather joined the band playing their first gig at Craig's work Christmas do. By all accounts this went down with the largely older audience like a bucket of cold sick and they were forced to stop after a few songs. Shortly after this the band changed it's name to World War III for a brief period before opting for Compos Mentis which translates from Latin as “of sound mind”. Following this Peter left the band due to personality differences and Ben and Sean were recruited into the band briefly. At this time two other members, Simon and Grant, of Hutt Valley band Gotham City joined. The input from these two new members led to a tighter musical direction for the band and during 1986-1987 Compos Mentis released three 7” singles (one here), a tape compilation of early work dating back to 1984 and appeared on a number of compilations. Compos Mentis were a central band in the emergence of an openly politicized anarcho-punk scene that emerged in the 1980s. Songs such as Run for Shelter railed against Nazi-punks while Patricia Bartlett is an inspired rant against Lower Hutt's then self-appointed leader of the 'moral majority'. The band were also active in producing their own zine, Communicade.

Power Age formed in Durban, South Africa in June 1981. The first line-up was Spike (vocals), Brett & Brian (guitars), Dave (bass), Mark Pills (drums) & their first gig was on 3rd October 1981 supporting the Gay Marines. It was their first encounter with the police as well, as Spike got taken in, because some policemen didn't like his pink mohawk. In June '82 Spike arranged a benefit show and 6 punk bands played. The show was a great success. Straight after this show Brian and Dave left. Midge joined on bass and it proved better with one guitar, so it was kept to a four piece. In November '82 Mark left to go live in England. Rubin Rose (previously from South Africa’s first punk band Wild Youth and later Warspike) replaced him immediately and the band really started moving. In April '83 they put out their first 7" release ‘World War III/ Vengeance Of Youth’. At the same time Midge left the band due to musical differences. The band was stagnant for two months until Paddy joined on bass. He was a good friend of the band but had never played before, so it was like starting again. In '84 the two songs off the first 7" were released on the UK compilation ‘Beating The Meat’. At this time in Durban (and the whole of South Africa) the scene was virtually dead - Power Age were the only punk band. In June '84 they played the ‘Punk '84’ show with new bands Wild Justice and State Control. It was a fantastic success and the owner of the venue let them run it for punk shows. Things went well and a good number of bands sprung up and the scene started moving. In June '85 they put out a C-60 tape ‘Who Are You?’ - one side studio, the other live and also succeeded in getting a track ‘System’ onto a French compilation EP entitled ‘Single Ticket To Paradise’. November '85 saw the release of the now legendary 4-track EP ‘Stop Apartheid’ in France by Neg-FX Records. In May '86 the band put out another C-60 tape release ‘Ripe For Terror’. At the same time they did a benefit show for a friend in jail. The venue owner somehow heard that it was a benefit for the ANC, and called the police. The police came, smashed up the gig and it was over. Luckily no one was arrested. Then the saddest moment came... Rubin quit the band in June '86. He had warned he might have to leave due to mounting pressure from his bosses. Peter then joined on drums, but couldn't play, so the band were stagnant again for 3 months. In February '87 they put out the two song 7" tribute to Rubin ‘World Today/Waiting for the War’ (recorded in '84) on their new label Power Noize Records. At the same time Peter left to play with Screaming Foetus and their good friend Choppy replaced him. In April '87 Power Age released a 5-track EP entitled ‘The Last Dove’. June '87 saw the release of the EP ‘Backlash’, a split EP with New Zealand-band Compos Mentis released on Out Of Order Records as well as one track ‘Eat Wheat Not Meat’ on a USA compilation LP entitled ‘The ALF Is Watching And You Can't Escape’. Having played only 77 shows in their 7 year existence Powerage played their last show on the 29th of July 1988. V/A - Follow No Leaders! 1996

Today a notable Oi!/Punk compilation on Nat Records with featuring nine Japanese bands, two songs each (except Chaos), delivering an amazing Streetpunk salvo here. And music from this country is always worth buying, be it drastic Hardcore that is wild and untamed with ecstatic vocals or melodic Oi! which always rushes into the ear and stays there. In addition, the expressive lyrics which illustrate a clear opinion. The anti-attitude against the system can be felt in every song and shows clearly what a broken form of society is present there. I mean, the same shit is going here, but I think it's a bit more extreme there. I've never been to Japan and maybe I won't make it in this life, but I would definitely like to. Follow No Leaders is not an empty phrase, it is a life wisdom that is burned in and gives a sense of self-determination and authenticity to decide things for yourself. KILLER PRALINEN - s/t 12'' 1982

Killer Pralinen is a combo from Frankfurt, my hometown, and emerged from Middle Class Fantasies, and consisted of Deo (vocals), Judas (guitars), Prinz Hulk (bass) and TG (drums) and to document the cut, they decided to change their name to Killer Pralinen. Musically, elements from the avant-garde were adopted. They moved away from the fast and hard punk style which they presented gloriously in their few publications, towards post-punk in the style of Killing Joke and UK Decay. In 1982 the band released their only 12'' on Aggressive Rockproduktionen which flopped and really disappointed the punk hearts in Germany, but now a sought-after rarity. Tensions within the band spread and they played again in front of an almost empty hall in Bochum and then dissolved. Today; after Prinz Hulk and TG so also Deo passed away a few years ago. Over the years and not least because of their participation on the first Soundtrack Zum Untergang compilation, the band became cult status of the German punkscene. Their recordings were distributed via bootlegs. In addition, some songs appeared again and again on compis, such as Party In The Gaskammer on the anti-Nazi compilation Nazis Raus!, published by Zap Fanzine and Weird System, etc.... When inquiries accumulated, Deo recorded five older but never published songs from the Killer Pralinen era together with Michael "11" Mayer and Stephan Mahler from Slime which were 2007 published on the complete discography of Middle Class Fantasies under the title Fick Dich Selbst by WS.

All right! Now, after a long time, one more selfmade Compilation is coming and there are songs on a certain topic that I don't usually do, but this time it was a need for me and it's quite possible that a second one will follow. It's about society & people, and I took thirty-seven killers which I like and think, they're fit. This manipulated society that is trapped in those systems and marches along tightly without following their own emotions and demands, that others hate because of a pimple on their forehead and let themselves be fooled every day and are numbed by the guidelines that are presented to them. Frightening & Incomprehensible this mass social control... ATONAL - Keller Party Anti Pop (Demos '88) 2016

Now damn cool Punkrock from the Ex-GDR, Atonal from Freiberg, active from 1986 to 1998. They began under the name "Taktlos" and gave their first concerts in the hot days of 1987 in the context of the Berlin "Kirchentag Von Unten". In the same year the band was banned and renamed itself to Atonal, which even received official permission to play through "Classification", but they gave a shit about it and wrote still political and socially critical texts, so they were temporarily banned from playing gigs in the GDR (Fuck The System!). This trendy record was released/compiled in a collaboration of Hörsturzproduktion/Elb-Power Records in an edition of 300 copies and has fourteen raw recordings of the combo at the start. The band consisted of Liesel (vocals), Oberleder (guitars), Ian (bass), Henne (drums) and they made one album, a 7Inch + a few tapes and represented on some compilations. Even today, Atonal still give concerts every now and then. So this is an important audio document I think, from a time when it wasn't easy to live out one's own attitude to life, with a lyric sheet and bandinfo. Classic D-Punk!
