V/A - 1984 The Third 2LP 1987

One of my favorite compilations is the double album by the important French label New Wave Records, who released a small series called 1984 in the Eighties with tons of international bands and every release is a direct hit in my opinion. Also Freunde, Volume 3 was pressed 1500 times and there are thirty-eight bands/songs to discover, plus a detailed booklet with lots of infos and lyrics and and and... I love such loving and detailed slabs because they not only make an impact acoustically, but also visually and I'm certainly not alone there, and on days off like these, the pleasure is doubly pleasant. The only downside is that I have to write so much and don't like to write much. I've already thought about not writing anything anymore, but I don't like that either. What a conflict hahaha... Now I'll open a beer and the subtle reference to Volume 4 (the last part) and the first two will follow... someday!

DEAD BOYS - Young Loud & Snotty 1977

Not really new in Blogland, but I recently saw a movie about the former New York music club CBGB that came out in 2013 and it's very entertaining and interesting, check it out, and Cleveland's Dead Boys play a major role in it. They were among one of the early American Punk combos, and one of the most rowdy, provocative, and violent groups of the era, or the first band to escalate the level of violence, nihilism, and pure ugliness of punkrock to extreme new levels. Formed 1977 by Chrome (guitar), Blitz (drums), Stiv (vocals), Jimmy (guitars), Jeff (bass) as Frankenstein but the group only managed a handful of local shows before fading away. Changing their name to the Dead Boys the band caused an immediate splash in their newly adopted hometown, due to Bators' Iggy Pop-esque, audience-bating antics, and the group's vicious three-chord Punkrock.

A superb review: "Fellow Cleveland types Pere Ubu may have won the artistic kudos for their adventurous, surprising work, but if the goal was just to rock and rock again, the Dead Boys had them totally trumped. As both title phrase and capsule description, Young, Loud & Snotty accurately defines the predominating aesthetic so well that one could just leave it at that, but there's a lot more going on here than on the face of it. With perhaps surprising great production from demi-famous '70s rocket Genya Ravan, the five-some found something sonically smack in-between the US garage/punk heritage of the past and the more modern thrashings from overseas. Bators sneers, gobs, gasps, and whines with the best of them, but he knows his rock history, as does his bandmates. Zero and Chrome aren't guitar virtuosos, but they do know what makes a song great and aren't afraid to concentrate on that, while the Magnum/Blitz rhythm section keeps things moving as it does. In some ways songs like 'All This And More' and 'I Need Lunch' simply emerge from an alternate '50s, with admittedly much more feedback and stereo sound. Stone cold rock classic 'Sonic Reducer' starts things off -- amusingly -- with all sorts of phased drums and other fripperies that later generations wouldn't consider punk at all. That said, it's still blunt, brilliantly sung by Bators and kicks out the jams with messy energy. Other all-time greats include the perfect bored-and-needing-kicks anthem 'Ain't Nothin' To Do' and the thoroughly wrong 'Caught With The Meat In Your Mouth'. There's even a rock oldie -- a cover of 'Hey Little Girl' live onstage at spiritual home CBGB's. And why not? With great punk rock and great rock, Young, Loud And Snotty still packs a punch." (Ned Raggett)

Haven't listened to it for a long time and have now rediscovered it through the movie, and I have to say, that I would have loved to have been there, back then in New York. And now, onto the stage with you.

TAXI - Eat Me 7'' 1999

All right folks, yet another four piece combo from Rome called Taxi and they consisted of Ntendarere (vocals), Lorenzo (guitar), Antonio (bass), Francesco (drums) and I advise you to take off your seat belts because the small debut 7Inch by them will take your shoes off, two brilliant ass-kickin' Punk'N'Roll numbers await you and flash you into the fifth dimension. In their eight year activity they made four singles and two albums and it could certainly have been more but Francesco's tragic death in 2007 marked the abrupt end of the four and that's really a sad fucking ending. But Tenda, Lorenzo, Danilo and Michele regrouped as Giuda (Italian for Judas) and their debut album Racey Roller from 2010 became quickly an underground sensation and was highly praised by diverse magazines and remains a cult classic and an inspiration to the hordes of bovver rockers following in Giuda’s wake (I haven't heard the slab yet, but I'll do this asap). Check out the boys, cause they deserve it.

THE WASPS - ThisWasPunk 2011

June's kick off and we're getting started with an amazing record from RaveUp Records by The Wasps. An early four piece from London which formed in February 1976 by Jesse (vocals), Del (guitar), Steve (bass), Johnny (drums). All recordings are from 1977, some of them live, and show clearly the energy of this band. They released two singles, plus a live split with Mean Street and that's it. On this small compilation you will find eleven more smashers and if you want to know more, some infos are on the back cover and in the file. Finally on vinyl the anthology of all their tracks! I'm a bit tired and too lazy to write more letters. Satisfaction guaranteed!

- Great Thx to Fredrik -

WANDA'S - A State Of No Mercy 1986

The rattle-punk of Wanda's first few years transformed into decent rock music, as can be heard on A State Of No Mercy, a statement of freedom and tolerance. The band changed line-up several times with a core of three women and on these recordings men are playing in Wanda’s as well and the studio line-up on this brilliant album were Joseé (vocals), Frank (guitar), Jan (bass), Christiaan (sax), Arie (drums) and this is their second and final full-length. The sound has gone from a rougher dirty fuzz sound to a much slicker Siouxsie influenced feel. What hasn’t changed is the lyrical radicalism, still inspirational. The Punk roots, however, remained unmistakable. "And we mean Punk as it was played as a music movement in the first years of its existence: straight forward, with a lot of melancholy humor, full of energy and nicely heavy. The sound of the early days was given a fat layer of metal and crossover: low flying guitars, solid woodcutter drums, driving bass and the menacingly low vocals. The first album (The Ideal, 1979) was about the ideal woman, the cover was phenomenal: all the members' faces had been shuffled & taped together, the music is definitely rammelpunk. Beautifully adolescent and recorded on a four-track recorder in the legendary Joke's Koeienverhuurbedrijf".
There are combos where the change from "amateurish" sound to melodic & powerful vibes works and in my opinion, the ladies and gentlemen from the Netherlands did it excellently. Wanda's was often described as 'Girl Punk'. A strange title, because what does that sound like? Music is always described in terms of style; each style has its own niche. But when it comes to female musicians, you're suddenly classified based on your gender instead of your music. In 1989 the band performed for the last time with a grandiose farewell concert at the Korsakoff in Amsterdam. Well, I like this record and I highly recommend the download, my dear visitors.

PEKINŠKA PATKA - Plitka Poezija 1980

Being one of the first Punk combos in Yugoslavia, they played a major role in opening doors for many bands that came after and their debut is a fucking great longplayer and the best record from Pekinška Patka. The second one (Strah Od Monotonije) is a little more nuanced affair. They turned towards darker and become more wavier but it's still a solid record. Numerous web entries testify to the popularity of this extraordinary combo which consisted of Čonta (vocals), Srele (guitars), Bora (bass) and Laci (drums). Formed in Novi Sad 1978, their first single, Biti Ružan, Pametan I Mlad, sold over 35,000 copies. This type of music created an impressively large youth culture in Yugoslavia, the record could be officially released, and even today the fans are happy when Pekinška Patka play individual concerts. In 2012 this classic was reissued, rightly so, and they're also represented on relevant compilations. Don't miss this fantastic album with sixteen Killers! B.t.w., congratulations to Real Madrid for winning the Champions League, I supported Liverpool, but the royals scored the goal.

THE UNUSUALS - 44u EP 1980

Debut EP by this three piece from Calgary on Living Room Records with four excellent PowerPop goodies. A bit info from the web: the Unusuals line-up were Ron (vocals/guitar), Danny (bass), Paul (drums) and the boys were one of the early bands on the scene, bridging the gap between the then-dominant cabaret acts and the new and burgeoning Calgary Punk scene, and they could play covers, but they also had some very cool original songs. They were also one of the first combos who infect the Calgarians and opened the doors for the entire scene to have a common meeting place. Solid songwriting and a great live act. 1981 followed their second & final brilliant single The More I Drink The Better She Looks To Me which I have maybe somewhere as well. Regardless of the detectives, they're only allowed to dance on Canada's Pissed Vol.3 compilation. Enjoy them as I do!

RAT'S GOT THE RABIES - Trashy Life EP 1988

Ex-Boskops veterans Pedder (vocals/bass), Ralle (guitars), Raffa (drums) founded Rat's Got The Rabies in Hanover 1988 and released in their short life-span two 7Inches on Schlawiner Records and one full-length Crassfish via Nasty Vinyl/Double A Records. The three play powerful, solid mid-tempo stuff with English lyrics and didn't attract much attention, which I think is a bit of a shame, because the band definitely doesn't have to hide. But at the end of the Eighties, the Hardcore wave and hoodies came along and pushed straight Punkrock the hard shoulder. Anyway, I'm too tired to waste any more words on this topic and in a few hours it's the weekend and as a kick-off for the same the four songs fit in brilliantly, believe me. 😋

OLHO SECO - Os Primeiros Dias EP 1988

One is still going today, freshly ripped and now on the table: we enjoy Brazil's greatest Hardcore band and they have 100% to smash your shack: Olho Seco, and they played rough and fuzzy music somehow retained a melodic undercurrent, making their songs instantly ingrained in the old medula for all time and the interesting thing about their music is the totally distorted recordings and I always think about it, do they use a guitar? Their songs sound like a harvester or a forest worker, so I'm really blown away every time when I listen to this fucking noises. Sure is, this is a perfecrt record for all raw Hardcore maniacs worldwide and you certainly like bands such as Ratos De Porão or Lixomania. Olho Seco were from São Paulo, formed in 1980 and on this record were involved Fabio (vocals), Redson (guitars), Val (bass), Sartana (drums) and this blast was released via New Face Records. The raw and direct sound typical of Punk bands became heavier and faster in Olho Seco's interpretation, which helped the band win respect and influence new generations of Punks. After their compilation tracks they put out the split album Botas, Fuzis, Capacetes (available today at inflated prices) with Brigada Do Ódio, this split was very well received and resulted in the band being invited to participate in many international compilations such as Welcome To 1984, released by Maximum Rock'N'Roll. After that, Olho Seco released several albums on their own and many tributes to this band have been produced, the most important being the Tributo A Olho Seco compilation, which included the greatest Punk/HC bands in Brazil, as well as Força Macabra (from Finland) and Cripple Bastards (from Italy). At the end of the day, Olho Seco continues to be faithful to the style which they made famous: fast & agressive Punkrock.

THE VORES - Love Canal EP 1978

Juhuuu, Feiertag today and finally being myself and this feels so perfect. What's for breakfast today? The Vores from Buffalo/New York recorded two 7Inches on Family Only and this is their first one. The line-up consisted of Biff (vocals/guitar), Dave (guitar/vocals), Gary (bass), Mike (drums) and four pieces we have on this little sucker. Forming in the late 70s they came from the Punk/NewWave and apart from being included on various compilations documenting that era in US punk/music from New York at that time, they have generally been neglected. This is apparently due to the few really interesting labels of the time and therefore no entry ticket was available. But the slab is acceptable to me and it's not for nothing that the detectives invited them to the catchy series called Killed By Death and Bloodstains. Schee!
