CHAOTIC DISCHORD - Their Greatest Fuckin' Hits 1994

Dear friends, it's a blessing that Punkrock exists; I don't know how my life would go on otherwise. Yesterday I got the party started, and that feeling continues today with Chaotic Dischord, top-notch U.K. HardcorePunk. This silver surfer is part of the awesome Punk Collectors Series from Anagram Records and will blast thirty hits right into your living room, so loud that no beer will get warm. And when an album starts with three songs that include the word 'FUCK!' you know what to do. Crank the volume all the way up and punch your neighbor in the face if he even thinks to complain. There is detailed infos in the file; for this, I'm stealing the short version from Discogs: Allegedly formed by members of Vice Squad and their road crew in 1981, although this still remains unconfirmed by members of the band. They also recorded a one-off EP under the name Sex Aids. The line-up consisted of Ransid (vocals), Pox (guitars), Ampex (bass) and Evo (drums). A number of Bristol Punkrock faces as a way to mock the lack of quality control on Riot City Records. A copy of their first recording was sent to Simon Edwards from Riot City. That recording ended up on the Compilation Riotous Assembly, and Chaotic Dischord was signed to his label and the band's point was proved long before Edwards realised that the band he'd signed were royally taking the mickey out of him. But by that point they were shifting so many units that he kept them on anyway and released a total of five albums without them ever playing a live show. The band reformed in 2019 with original members Ransid and Ampex, was temporarily hampered by the 'rona, then have been playing international festivals and recording new material ever since.

They eventually split up in 1988 when Ransid's tool hire business took off. After continued offers from Punk festivals around the globe, Chaotic Dischord reformed to play Rebellion Festival 2020. When that obviously couldn't happen they were confirmed to play in 2021, to the same result. Fortunately Rebellion still wanted them and they played both the 2022 and the 2023 festivals. The band played its first ever gig at Exchange in Bristol in February 2022, and have since gone on to play shows all over the planet, taking in shows in Vancouver, Madrid, Berlin, Australia and Ramsgate. They also occasionally play secret gigs under their aforementioned nom de plume Sex Aids. They continue to tour, and in August 2023, launched their first physical release in thirty-five years when they brought out their Songs To Fuck Your Mental Health To limited edition maxi-single on pukey coloured 10Inch in on their own Irresponsible Punk Songs label. This collected songs from their two previously download only releases.

Hearty food that's perfect when you're confused and need a new boost.

PETER & THE TEST TUBE BABIES - Pissed And Proud 1982

And once again a live album and as a debut its always welcome in my house. Brighton's Peter & The Test Tube Babies were formed 1978 and when I put these boys on, memories of better days come flooding back. Every year around Christmas time, they played here in Frankfurt at the old Batschkapp (I scanned a few tickets for you), and it was always a celebration because all my friends came and it was an emotional evening with lots and lots of alcohol. Those days are unfortunately over because some have already gone. Well, that's just how it is. A review: "Well, they’ve finally put an album out. The sound quality is so good that you’d never know it was live except for the crowd noise and interaction between the band and audience. These guys produce powerful Punk Oi! music, but their themes are questionable, as with most such groups. They have all sorts of songs about “birds” the English equivalent of “chicks” and not being able to get off. Then we have the familiar ode to fighting, getting beat up, and the wimps that won’t fight in “Moped Lads.” Socially relevant themes in “Keep England Untidy” tell us to litter, and “Shitstirrer” is where they explain that when things are bad they will make them worse. Their song “Elvis Is Dead” is a classic, though, and “Maniac” is a great pun. But who knows at this point if they’re serious? Fun band to listen to but not to contemplate. They are thugs and proud of it." (Ruth Schwartz, MRR #4 • January/February 1983) -  I can only agree, the song selection is perfect, the atmosphere is great, and this nugget was released by No Future Records. - I can't get rid of this damn cold, it's driving me crazy and I'm already getting a damn ginger tea skin.

RONDOS - Red Attack 1980

The Rondos would become one of the most influential DIY bands in the Netherlands, sporting a communist imagery perhaps more out of provocation than ideology. Formed 1977 in Rotterdam by John van de Weert (vocals), Allie van Altena & Maarten van Gent (guitar/vocals), Frank (bass), Wim Ter Weele (drums) and were active from 1977 to 1980. Their sound is minimalist, angry, and incredibly biting. The lyrics deal with the bankruptcy of culture and taking to the streets to spray graffiti, the senselessness of wars, and the daily struggle for survival in this worthless, selfish society. They made three 7Inches and one album, all released on their own label King Kong Records, and in 2009 they re-released everything on two records called Destroy The Entertainment: "Repetitive, stripped-down, and furious songs. They forged a new direction in the Dutch music scene: aesthetically far removed from rock, they played by their own rules, wrote their own fanzines, and created DIY platforms intended to be inclusive and inspiring. Rehearsal spaces, gigs, and stencil machines. Power To The People! They significantly inspired a new wave of Dutch bands, particularly in the Wormer and Utreg scenes." The Rondos made a great racket with their songs and I have to admit, listening to them never gets boring. And I've heard minimalist music before where I had to switch off after two or three songs. Loved and therefore featured on several Compilations.

DEAD KENNEDYS - @ The Paradiso/Amsterdam 5.12.1982

Here I am again, and it's snowing, and it's miserable, and blah blah blah. We're staying live, and today I'm presenting you the second record from the anniversary box set "Forty," by the Dead Kennedys which was released six years ago. This wonderful recording shows the Californians in top form during their third European tour. These recordings were made at one of Amsterdam's oldest venues, the Paradiso, and you can imagine, if you know the city, how exhilarating this gig was. So far so good, enjoy the material. I'll be back soon, as I've been blessed with a fucking flu and this beauty is driving me absolutely crazy. Incidentally, all re-upload requests have been finished. Stay Healthy!

RIISTETYT - Raiskattu Tulevaisuus 1984

It's frosty at my homebase, so I'm off to Finland, where I'm sure the locals would laugh at such temperatures. Riistetyt somehow sent their demo, Raiskattu Tulevaisuus/Raped Future, to the house painter H.E. from Cologne. He's already released two albums by the band, and apparently both sold really well, so he didn't hesitate to release another tape on his Rock-O-Rama label, naturally with a self-designed cover, etc... I don't want to write any more about the album; anyone who likes Finnish HardcorePunk will be very satisfied with this record; all others as well. This sound was and is irreplaceable. And the best: They are still active! So if you don't know what to do with a lousy, icy Monday, Riistetyt is the answer.

EA80 - Definitiv: Nein! 2011

Anyone who puts on an EA80 slab at 8:00 in the morning is either desperate, crazy, a passionate Punk, optimistic, or simply wants to listen to music that is far removed from the usual run-of-the-mill stuff. Well, now you can choose what applies to you and me. It's the eleventh album by the Gladbach gents and with nine songs its their 'shortest', but no less intense. First off, let's mention the elaborate Chromolux Magic Chrome cover and which Punk band goes to such lengths? That's D.I.Y., and the four are always coming up with new ideas for the artwork. I know they struggle with the design, but in the end you're always surprised with the final result, that's a perfect score. To the songs: "Definitely: No!" is a typical, self-contained work, remaining true to their roots but surprisingly more upbeat, biting, and direct than expected. It features a mix of slow, melancholic tracks and driving bangers, offering both self-referential nods and new facets like epic songs and critical lyrics, sounds more upbeat and aggressive than usual, and cementing their status as an uncompromising band that defies every drawer. Even after many years, the band shows no weakness, remaining a fascinating, enigmatic entity that you either love immediately or ignore. It's one more powerful record and I have to admit, it's kind of faded into the background since I prefer the earlier albums, but I have to say, I'm going to put it on my phone right away, and the opener "Fort Von Krank" is so brutally good, you can use it anytime, or as a kick in the ass when you stagnate. EA80 are irreplaceable, and even before the first chord sounds, they tune their guitars in unison to a minor key, count to four, and launch forward. Songs that offer enough space to reflect your visions, feelings and frustrations and others as well. Have emotional moments & pleasant memories with this wonderful record.

THE DOLE - New Wave Love 7'' 1978

Damn good two-song 7Inch that also belongs in this theater and I'm somehow in an upbeat mood, the prospect of having five days off boosts my vibes. Talkin' about the Dole, a five piece which formed in Peterborough anno 1977 and consisted of Ian (vocals), Simon (guitar), Matt (bass), Paul (drums), Peter (keyboards) and this is their only piece, released via the small independent The Ultimate Record Label. The A-side is a superb love song which I have rarely heard, an absolute must for all lovers and those who live in harmonious relationships. It has nothing to do with fucking Christmas that I chose this particular record; no, no, a beautiful song doesn't need any reasons, you have to do it, not just talk about it. The flip is no less awful; if I understand correctly, it's about a judge who is an asshole, a nasty human, a pisshead. The solid rhythms are supported by the squeaky keys, which are a perfect companion and squeak and fart and have their time in beautiful short solos; I love such a sound, and the snotty guitar gives me the rest. The slab won't cut off your ears, but it comes close. A few Compilation appearances are also available.

V/A - OX-Compilation #38 2000

Finally, another brilliant OX output, and I've realized I'm missing a few, hmmm... I really have no idea where they've all gone? Well, that's just how it is, and number 38 has the lovely addition Beautiful Music For Beautiful People and yes, that only refers to us. The OX-Fanzine was the best reading material for me back then: funny, informative, and never boring. And while I can't say I always eagerly awaited the next issue, I was always pleased to see a new magazine at my local Kiosk, a few stupid bastards were so brazen to steal the accompanying CD, but well, that's just how it is with those jerks. Precisely those who leave their shitty beer bottles or paper cups, cigarettes and vomit at our performance venues, there's a 'nice' song about that, I have no tolerance for those Pseudo-Punks and they should go where the sun never shines. But I'm getting sidetracked again; I just had an interesting encounter and I'm feeling rather happily motivated, hahahaha..... I guess, I'm a little sarcastic. Thirty-six bands/songs, international, twenty-five years young and I think, it has something for everyone. Meanwhile, I'll go and see where all the other CDs have been.

G.P.S. - Quand Revient L'Eté 7'' 1982

Garage Psychiatrique Suburbain (or sometimes Globule Pulsation System), abbreviated as G.P.S., was formed in 1977 in Sèvres by Thomas (vocals/guitars) and Pierre (drums). The latter two had been friends since they were babies. As early as 1975, when they were teenagers, they began experimenting with music. Through friendships between high schools, they met Patrice (bass) and Fabrice (guitars). For musical influences, Thomas could count on his father from a very young age, as he was a singer-songwriter named Jean-Claude Darnal. The four of them started rehearsing in the basement of a large house run by a woman who took in the neighborhood kids. A few chords brought by Thomas, and they were off. No covers in their repertoire. It must be said that it would have been difficult since Thomas was a complete beginner on the guitar! But he composed a lot, and very quickly. Pierre followed suit with the lyrics. They started with a few small appearances at local parties and youth centers, then played their first real concert in 1980 in the Bruyères district at the disused Gevelot factory in Sèvres. They were on the bill with Mama Bea Tekielski, the Tokow Boys, and Oberkampf. They recorded their tracks using a cassette recorder and its built-in microphone, sending demos to record labels. The first demo, featuring "Irradié," "Stress," and "Pas De Politik," was recorded in the children's youth center in Sèvres during the winter of 1979. Others in 1980 were recorded at Thomas's parents' house, in the attic, and then another came from Les Roches (located in the Rhône department), recorded during the All Saints' Day school holidays in a small cave dwelling, the holiday home of Fabrice's parents. Michel Marizi, a friend of Pierre's and an audio enthusiast, regularly helped them with the sound recording of their demos, which were recorded using two Revox B77s.

They played several concerts, including one for a private party at the Lacroix family home, one for sugar producers who wanted punks to play during a medieval festival at their castle, and another in support of the gay rights committee of the 13th arrondissement in Paris, where the unusual show was very well received! Numerous concerts with renowned bands followed. Fabrice left the band, and Marc joined as bassist, along with Thierry Gesteau on vocals and guitar, allowing Pierre to focus entirely on drums. The only label to respond to them in 1981 was Underdog, which had been founded the previous year by Dominique Lamblin, Albert Kosky, and Marc Zermati. Lamblin signed them in early 1982. In the studio, they reworked their earlier compositions.

Their first 7Inch "Quand Revient L'Eté" was released in 1982 on the Underdog label and was quite successful, followed 1983 by the album "Bien Dans La Ville," and three years later by the next album, "En Attendant La Prochaine Guerre." They played numerous concerts, and in 1984 Richard Kolinka discovered them and offered to produce them for his label, KOD. However, this never came to fruition. Their planned performance at the Franconville Festival on May 26th & 27th, 1985, was cancelled. (source: 45vinylvidivici)

GORILLAS - It's My Life 7'' 1978

It's time for a little trip, and my pilot just informed me that the weather is perfect for a helicopter flight to London. So, off we go! Here we'll meet a band that started back in 1972 under their first band name, the Hammersmith Gorillas. More from wiki: Jesse Hector played in bands from the age of eleven, first the Sun Records influenced Rock & Roll Trio between 1959 and 1961, and then the R&B influenced band the Cravattes between 1962 and 1964. Cravattes bassist Adrian Stambach joined mod outfit the Clique in 1963. Jesse then reformed the Rock & Roll Trio (1966-1967) before starting two more short-lived bands, the Way of Life (1967) and the Mod Section (1968) and went on to form the proto-Punk band Crushed Butler in 1969 with drummer Darryl Read and bassist Allen Butler. After a brief flirtation with EMI Records, Dick James Music, and Decca Records the band was renamed Tiger in autumn 1970, until Darryl left to join the glam rock group Dizzy after Tiger disbanded, then Hector with the addition of new drummer Gary Anderson and bassist Vic Allen changed name again to Helter Skelter in 1971. With the addition of bassist Allen Butler (who also had been one of a number of different bass players that passed through the Crushed Butler various lineups) the band became the Hammersmith Gorillas in 1972 taking their name from London's pro-Castro activist group the Hammersmith Guerillas.

The band's debut release was a cover version of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" on the Penny Farthing label, produced by Larry Page, and timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the original release. They then signed to Chiswick Records and recording two singles for the label with session drummers Chris Townson playing on the first single and Matt McIntyre playing on the second single for the label. With Gary Anderson back on drums the band begin to build a loyal fanbase before moving on to Raw Records. In 1976, they played at the Mont-de-Marsan Punk Festival in the south of France along with the Damned and Eddie & The Hot Rods. After two more singles in 1978, the band's debut (and only) studio album was issued, Message to the World.

Hector was noted for his extravagant sideburns, and was a keen self-publicist, declaring the Gorillas to be "the future of rock music". He was influenced by several dead rock stars, and several tracks on the band's album were performed in the style of his heroes, including a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" and "Going Fishing" performed in the style of Marc Bolan. They returned to Chiswick in 1981 for the "Move It" single with Jimmy Knight appearing on bass, before splitting up after Alan Butler died from injuries sustained in a horse riding accident. Hector continued to regularly perform live around London, working with a new band, Jesse Hector & The Sound, in the early 1990s, with bassist Kevin White and drummer Gilles Baillarguet. The band issued a single in 1991, "Leavin' Town" on the Clawfist label. When the group split in 1993, Hector assembled a new band, the Gatecrashers, named after a Gorillas single, contributing to several retro-garage rock compilations and releasing an EP in 2000, Keep on Moving.

Later Hector worked as a cleaner at the Hackney Empire theatre and the Royal Horticultural Society, and was the subject of a documentary film in 2008, A Message To The World, directed by Caroline Catz, which was shown as part of the Raindance festival, and at the Barbican as part of its "Pop Mavericks" season.

DISCO ZOMBIES - South London Stinks 2021

Let's kick off the gloomiest month of the year with a highlight, and I love this band; everything about them is just perfect: the vocals, the humor, the music, the band name, the clothes, hahaha... and the guys have recorded three fantastic 7Inches and, I don't know if I can say this, they started working with a drum machine quite early on, because it's already present on their third 7Inch. The band consisted of Dave (vocals), Mark & Andy (guitars), Geoff (bass), Andy (drums) and the Disco Zombies should rank high in the pantheon of legendary English DIY Punk bands, but a frustrating career of bad timing, record label mismanagement and three terrific singles slipping through the cracks have kept them in the shadows. In 1977 they were Leicester’s greatest Punk band but the single that might have shot them to the top of the UK heap, filled with pop gems like Top of the Pops and Punk A Go Go, was scrapped at the last possible minute due to a production company implosion. Still hopeful, they moved to London and prepared for stardom. They recorded and released the John Peel favorite Drums Over London themselves, a song whose satire may have been too subtle for the masses. Sung from the viewpoint of a xenophobic right-winger, many took it as racist and it found fans among the crowd they were trying to critique.

Peel had to explain to Rock Against Racism it actually supported their views! Due to the success of Drums Over London, their first single finally saw release as The Invisible EP. Unfortunately as it was a year late it was seen as being out of time and quickly sank without a trace. With hindsight we can hear it for what it really was, an EP of killer Pop-Punk. And had it come out on time, their Top of the Pops would’ve beaten the Rezillos to the charts by six months. One more single, an artier affair with a drum machine and DIY atmosphere, was released. Here Come The Buts backed by Mary Millington, their tribute to England’s most famous Porn star suicide, marry a more PostPunk atmosphere of repetitious drum machine programming with their usual infectious melodies and snarling guitars.

Three more aborted records followed and more songs, only ever played live, were heard by increasingly fewer people as the Punk dream gave way. But now, at long last, the Disco Zombies, a great pop band with catchy hooks, witty lyrics and infectious energy - can be appreciated by the rest of us. Available for the first time since their release, the Disco Zombies’ three classic, collectible singles, coupled with seven bonus unreleased tracks, are featured on the new Acute Records Compilation Drums Over London. In addition, the digital download contains a complete live set including five more songs not recorded or heard anywhere else, as well as some choice covers that will prove the Disco Zombies are more than another forgotten Punkrock hard-luck story.

I'm grateful for all these words, and unfortunately I can't remember where they came from. When the double LP came out back then, I had to grab it immediately. With its colored vinyl and excellent band history, the release on Optic Nerve Recordings was an absolute must fro me, and I can only recommend that you buy it. It's worth every fucking penny. - Again in detail: The Invisible EP, Track 5 was recorded in Leicester sometime in 1978 and is an unreleased demo cut, the Drums Over London 7'', Here Come The Buts 7'', plus more stuff which was recorded @ Alvic Studios/London in 1980 and remained unreleased till now. Essential !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PURPLE HEARTS - Frustration 7'' 1979

A quick visit to my favorite city in Europe: London. Here we enjoy the company of a nice band that provides a bit of an emotional moment. And they deserve a bit info from wiki: The Purple Hearts are an mod revival band which were formed 1977 in Romford, eastern Greater London. They were often considered one of the best English mod revival groups, the NME calling them "one of the few mod bands to actually cut it on Rock'N'Roll terms". They started in 1977 when teenagers Jeff Shadbolt, Simon Stebbing, Bob Manton, and Nick Lake formed the band in Romford as The Sockets, before they even knew how to play their instruments. They formed for the purpose of getting a support slot at a Buzzcocks gig at the East London Polytechnic, to debut their tongue-in-cheek rock opera. In 1978, their drummer Nick Lake broke his leg. He was replaced by Gary Sparks. The band switched their name to Purple Hearts, after an amphetamine-barbiturate mixture popular with the mods of the 1960s. Accordingly, they changed their sound from the rough-edged Punkrock, to a more mod-influenced sound, which, thanks largely to The Jam, was beginning to capture public attention. In September 1979, the band scored a minor hit with their debut single, "Millions Like Us" which reached number 57 in the UK Singles Chart. The band then toured the UK with Secret Affair and Back To Zero on 'the march of the mods' tour in 1979. The band's second single, "Frustration" was released in November that year and a tour of the UK follows to promote the single.

In 1980 they released their debut album, Beat That! and was produced by Chris Parry of Fiction Records. The single 'Jimmy' is taken from and gave them another minor hit reaching number 60 in the UK chart in March 1980. After the commercial failure of Beat That!, the band parted company with Fiction Records, before signing a one-off single deal with Safari which produced the "My Life's A Jigsaw" single and the 7Inch did make the BBC Radio One playlist, but didn't make it to the national charts. A final single, "Plane Crash" was released in 1982, on the independent record label Roadrunner Records before the band split up in November of that year after a failed American trip. After the Hearts, Jeff Shadbolt joined The Rage, who included Brett Ascott from The Chords. Gary Sparks joined High Zierra with former members of Department S, Tony Lourdan, Mark Taylor and Michael Herbage. Simon Stebbing joined Hearts On Fire who recorded an album Dreams Of Leaving and two EPs for Midnite Records. Bob Manton joined Simon Stebbing and Peter Green in cosmic country rockers Owen & The Deacons. They resurfaced in 1984 to release a live album, Head On Collision Time (1985) recorded live at the 100 Club, and their second studio effort, Popish Frenzy (1986). A single "Friends Again" taken from this album was released on Unicorn Records. In 1986 the group toured West Germany, Austria and the Netherlands before once again calling it a day. They re-convened at the Mods Mayday '99 show, recorded for the Detour Records live compilation album. In 2003, Stebbing produced a rarities goodie, Smashing Time, also released on Detour Records. Two superb songs, and I'm sure each of us came across with the lyrics and can tell about such feelings, because we're not morons, to that the catchy sound and you're captivated.

THE THOUGHT CRIMINALS - Food For Thoughtcrimes EP 1979

Before I return to Texas, I'll quickly jet off to Sydney and visit the Thought Criminals, who were founded in the late seventies. The Thought Criminals were an influential and enterprising combo and disbanded in late 1981. The "angular, fast and quirky Punkrock" of the Thought Criminals was a fixture in the burgeoning Sydney underground scene." The band's name was derived from the concept of 'thoughtcrimes' (unapproved thoughts) from George Orwell's book, Nineteen Eighty-Four. They exemplified the do-it-yourself ethos with which they combined considerable business acumen. The band members formed the Doublethink record label and  which provided recording and live performance opportunities for other new bands. They built up a following with performances at mainly inner-city venues. The music of the Thought Criminals, in their early recordings and live performances, has been described as a "jagged, frantic sound" and often had an irreverent sense of humour. This is their second release with five splendid numbers. More stuff in this theater available.

DEPROGRAMMER - Discipline EP 1980

It's weekend, and I have some peace and no appointments, so I'll see what I can come up with today. A rare record that was original released without a sleeve will kick things off and this beauty came via At Last Records and it's the debut 7Inch from Deprogrammer, a short-lived combo from Texas but moved to Los Angeles, and here with female vocals by Nina, who unfortunately wasn't part of the subsequent recordings. Three catchy mid-tempo hymns which are already stinging because of their length and Nina with her passionate voice also raises the songs considerably to the upper level of smooth sounds. I can definitely say it's not a typical LA Punk record, just different and very interesting. Another single and an album followed - you know where to click for that - and unfortunately I can't provide any further information because there isn't any, and in 1980 I was at home. They weren't on any Compilations back then and the Bootlegs they're on have always the same song and that's a bit stupid. Now I treat myself to the fridge and look what's hidden there.

V/A - Happy Birthday, You Sweet Liar! 2025

I guess every one of you, dear followers, has experienced this. You think you know someone well, a lover, a friend, or some other confidant, and then one day everything changes. You are lied to for no reason by this person. And you clearly know it's a lie. Of course, this hurts immensely, and you ask yourself what the reason was? Self-protection, fear of consequences/conflicts, or social conformity/reputation in society? Or do people lie to get rid of someone, to throw away baggage... I don't know. In any case, you are left with ambivalence and have to make a decision whether you want to tolerate this person in your environment any longer or not even look at them again. They always say everyone deserves a second chance, but if you feel like you're being treated disrespectfully and the other person doesn't care at all, well, I'm for a cut, and a breakup is the logical consequence. There are certainly many views, thoughts, and opinions on this, so I came up with the idea of channeling my anger and dismay into music, and this Compilation is meant to help, or at least for the time being. Of course, you can always fall flat on your face, nothing is guaranteed, but when you're 100% being screwed, there's only one option left and I'm tired of crying after such ignorant people. Especially when they say of themselves, "I hate liars". - You see, they have no self-respect, they deceiving their selfs. Anyway, I'll think twice about who I'll give the next bouquet of roses.
Take Care!

THE DICKS - Kill From The Heart 1983

First full length by the Dicks and original released via SST Records, my copy is the Alternative Tentacles vinyl version and there are lots of Infos in the Blog and I like to quote here the one from AT, especially for you: "The Dicks, a Commie Faggot Band, emerged during the halcyon days of Austin, Texas Punk. The scene centered around the local dive bar Raul’s frequented by local freaks, artists, and soon-to-be Punkrockers. The band was the creation of Gary Floyd, a 26 year old from Palestine, Texas who had been a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War and was openly, flamboyantly gay. Although he was advertising the Dicks before they were even an actual band, Floyd soon joined forces with three “terrorist thugs” to complete the group: Glen Taylor (guitars), Buxf Parrot (bass) and Pat Deason (drums). They started writing burly, blues-drenched punk anthems and began playing raucous, shows with local heroes the Big Boys. Unlike that band’s funk-infused, high-production value drag show, the Dicks opted for a cruder but still spectacular approach. Gary Floyd would assault the audience with chocolate frosting pulled from his panties, inviting any rowdy audience members to suck his dick.

The band’s first single, the masterful Dicks Hate The Police was dropped onto the world in 1980 on MDC’s R Radical label. The title track to this EP is unlike anything else before or after a total powerhouse of a song. The B-side found the band playing faster and harder than most other US Punk bands at the time. Like most of their Texas peers, the Dicks had a sound that didn’t fit any one mold or genre. Sometimes Punk, Hardcore, Blues, or free-form ranting, they were always playing music on the edge of insanity. Their next record is one of the ultimate documents of Texas Punk, a split live record with the Big Boys recorded at Raul’s. While the Big Boys don’t sound as great as their studio material, the Dicks really explode off the vinyl with a ripping live set that captures both the great songwriting and amazing energy they brought to the table. Having caught the attention of Punk producer Spot, the Dicks recorded their first full length for SST. Kill From The Heart finds the Dicks’ blues Punk attacking conservatism and especially racism with unbridled fury. In 1982, before the album came out, Gary and the Dicks moved to San Francisco, followed by MDC and DRI who took up with them at a squatted beer plant known as the Vats. Along with their new neighbors Crucifix and Michigan’s the Crucifucks, they embarked on the 1983 Rock Against Reagan tour: an exhausting three month extravaganza organized by the Yippies. The tour took a lot out of the band, and after its completion only Gary returned to the city by the bay. There he reformed the band with three new musicians: Tim Caroll (guitars), Sebastian Fuchs (bass), Lynn Perko (drums).

This line-up recorded the Peace? 7Inch, a concept single attacking the injustices of war. While the record is powerful, especially the scorching “I Hope You Get Drafted,” it also demonstrated the cleaner, more rocking direction that the new band was taking. 1985’s These People album, released on Alternative Tentacles, showcased a Dicks who were severing ties with “Punk” sounds to play more straightforward, longer bluesy rock songs. Nonplused by the reaction from punk audiences (“play faster!”), Gary decided to end the Dicks in 1986. He and Lynn Perko started Sister Double Happiness, who recorded for SST. Gary later went solo and has a new project called Black Kali Ma on A.T. Glen Taylor, unfortunately, passed away. Alternative Tentacles has reissued a collection CD of Dicks material that is a good starting point, and bootlegs of the LP (good quality) and first 7″ (bad quality) aren’t too hard to come by. Go get them now!"

TYRANNA - s/t LP 2011

Superb release by RaveUp Records and this is one more obscure nugget from the golden age of Punkrock. Volume 63 was dedicated to the Canadian band Tyranna (feminine equivalent for Tyrant) from Toronto and who didn't in their short lifespan (1978-1979) made it onto vinyl. Vera Skye (a.k.a. Rabies) gathered all the musicians and wrote all the lyrics. Through a rotating cast of musicians, Vera Rabies was the one constant. Other members included John Ziegler and Dave Porter on guitars and drums, respectively in 1978; guitarist Ron Partridge, Gerry Smith on bass, and drummer Cleave Anderson who had just left the Battered Wives. Whenever Toronto’s Punk scene of the late 70s is discussed, it’s usually the Diodes and the Infamous Viletones that get name-checked, while other important bands of the era are overlooked. In some cases, there are good reasons why groups that regularly played the main Punk venues of the era like the Turning Point, Larry’s Hideaway and the Crash'N'Burn are now largely forgotten. Tyranna’s best work wasn’t released on singles at the time, and they rarely ventured outside the city during their brief run in 1978 & 1979. This explains why the energetic PopPunk crew led by the snarly Vera “Rabies” Skye, who split bills with Iggy Pop, Jane County, the Members and the Dils, isn’t better known today. They also appeared on My Girlfriend Was A Punk! Compilation with the track 'Back Off Baby'. It may be thirty years too late, but Tyranna’s long-rumoured early demos, finally being released on this nice record.

LEATHERFACE - I Want The Moon EP 1991

When I'm drunk, or worried, or just unfocused and my mind is completely empty, I like to resort to tried-and-true methods. I don't need to write much about them because most of you already know them, and that's not to detract from the post, but it does make things easier for me, and now is such a moment. Today my friends from Leatherface from Sunderland are pushing me over the blind spot and not for sale is their intense fifth EP with three exquisite weaving arpeggiated guitar filigrees in amongst barrages of power and barre chords and one of the fiercest playing dynamic songs, two are non-album tracks, and released via Roughneck Records. These days, their 7Inchers are highly sought after and hard to come by, so that's enough for today. I'm tired and looking forward to tomorrow's day off.

DESPERATE LIVIN' - Stilla Natt EP 1981

Desperate Livin' were a four piece from Stockholm and consisted of Giorgio (vocals), Lars (guitars), Mikael (bass), Bengt (drums) and made a fucking rare 7Inch of which only circa 300 copies were pressed and only a few survived. Info: "To top it all off, part of the edition was ruined by the sun. The remaining copies they sold themselves to friends and at gigs, they had no distribution. Consequently, the single is not so easy to find today. At the end of 1979, Desperate Livin’ took their first steps. Guitarist Lars had previously been in the Rapers, one of Stockholm’s very first Punk bands. Bassist Mikael and drummer Bengt (called Beppe) were on vocals. They had an Italian who had previously lived in England. His name was Giorgio, but he was called George. The influences were the usual ones, i.e. The Clash, Sex Pistols & The Stooges. The members were active in the Ormen association in Nacka and thus got many gigs, but sometimes they also arranged gigs in the city. The highlight was when they played support for Ebba Grön. The idea of making a single came a bit hastily, they saw it mostly as a fun thing and hadn't even had time to agree on which songs they would record when the time came. In retrospect, they have regretted the song choice and they themselves prefer to listen to the demo that was recorded after the single. When it came to which language the band should sing in, opinions diverged, so it became both parts. And it was these conflicts that finally caused the band to split up in the fall of 1981." (source: from the book Ny Våg) - Four solid tracks and to find on two great Compilations.
