DINOSAUR JR. - Just Like Heaven EP 1989

Dinosaur Jr. is an American alternative rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984. Originally called Dinosaur, prior to legal issues that forced the group to change their name, the band disbanded in 1997 until reuniting in 2005. Guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph were the band's founding and current members; Mascis has been the group's sole continuous member. Mascis and Barlow had previously played together in a hardcore punk band called Deep Wound, formed in 1982 and broke up in mid-1984. - As initially named Mogo, they played their first show on University of Massachusetts Amherst campus in the first week of September 1984. Nakajima went into an anti-cop rant during the performance, and Mascis was so appalled by his behavior at the show that he disbanded the group the next day. A few days later Mascis called Barlow and Murph to form a new band without telling Nakajima; "I was kind of too wimpy to kick him out, exactly," Mascis later admitted, and explained, "Communicating with people has been a constant problem in the band." The trio named themselves Dinosaur, and Mascis and Barlow took over lead vocal duties. Their distinct sound, characterized by high gain, extensive use of feedback and distortion, and frontman J Mascis's melodic guitar solos, was highly influential in the alternative rock movement of the 1990s.

LOST PROPERTY - Persuasion 7'' 1981

Only piece by this very unknown combo with female singer on Clubland Records. Two decent powerpop numbers, released without a cover and certainly in small editions. Good for me, not much words except: cool record!

ARTICLES OF FAITH - What We Want Is Free EP 1982

Awesome Killer record by Chicago based hardcore punx Articles Of Faith, active between 1981-1985, and they were considered as vanguards of that Midwestern city's scene and released a handful of highly influential records. Later work is credited with superior songwriting and with foreshadowing the emo sound. Fronted by former protest singer and eventual history instructor Vic Bondi, Articles of Faith first came on the scene in 1981. Their first EP, What We Want Is Free, was released 1982 and was followed by the Wait EP in 1983 and the LPs Give Thanks ('84) + In This Life ('85), which were both produced by Bob Mould. While their early releases contained a mélange of differing styles, their last release, In This Life, is one of the records credited with kick-starting the emocore sound. The band Bondi (vocals & guitar), Dave Shield (bass & vocals), Virus-X (drums), Dorian Tajbakhsh (guitar) and Joe Scuderi (guitar) broke up in 1985. Bondi went on to form Alloy and Jones Very, released the EP Fortunate Son in 2003 and appeared in the 2006 documentary American Hardcore. VAURIO - A Shout From The Night 1984

From Turku are Vaurio and they were founded 1981 by Sauke (vocals), Masa (guitar), Sidi (bass) and Brando (drums) but Brando left one year later the band and new drummer Minni came in and this line-up formed the band's standard composition and also played on all Vaurio recordings, while other band members were either visiting or just being there for a short time. The group was active until summer 1985 after which it re-assembled only on May 11, 1990, at the six-year anniversary celebration of the turkish Aura brewery. Vaurio is part of the Finnish hardcore punk movement from the early 80s and recorded one EP, Sortoa Ja Vainoa on Propaganda Records in 1983 and this full length which was released via Rock-O-Rama, the German label we all love... and two tracks on the great Finnish Spunk/Hard Beat compilation (coming soon), also on the Cologne label. Vaurio's sound stands for short fast songs, not so aggressive as Terveet Kädet or Riistetyt, rather slight melodic mid-tempo songs and in between, of course, short catchy numbers, fourteen nuggets in twenty-five minutes. Fuck info at the end: singer Sauke died at the age of 38 in 2003. - In his honor: A Shout From The Night!

PSYCHO - Hosebags From Hell 1986

In my metal days I was listening many hardcore stuff and one of those fantastic bands were Psycho from Boston and they've been shredding their way through the population since 1981 and numerous 7Inches were published. Hosebags From Hell on Ax/ction Records was their only album until four years ago (Chainsaw Priest 2014), recorded by: Mega (vocals), Johnny X (guitars), Ed (bass), Charlie (drums). Formed as a punk band, the material simply grew faster and more extreme until it became the high-speed grind/thrash mutation their extensive discography of EPs, splits and albums reflects, never following current trends nor trying to make it sound technical. In 2008 Welfare Records released a two vinyl compilation (1000 copies) with all their Studio Recordings 1982-1986, a total of forty-five songs which demonstrates the brutal face of the band and not only interesting for all DieHards among you. I recommend a visit to the Left To Starve blog where a little interview with drummer Charlie took place.

ZAKARRAK - Larga Vida... 1992

Zakarrak were one of Spanish most representative Oi! bands from the nineties. The band was formed back in 1986 in Mondragón (Guipúzcoa) by Petete, Sabih, Oscar, Pexeto and Mitxel and released two demo tapes, one in 1988 and another in 1990. In 1992 they released their debut album "Larga Vida..." which was released via Overdrive on cassette, vinyl and CD, plus Germany released a bootleg in blue & green vinyl for this album. They were solid Oisters!! in the 90’s and they put more rock’n’roll and heavy sound into their music and were more gifted as musicians than most of the bands from their time. Some songs from Zakarrak have become classics for following generations. Now a warm shower, it's raining so more time for posting.

THE EPILEPTICS - 1970's EP 1981

Nice little record now and info by Punk77: From Bishop Stortford England, The Epileptics (Colin – vocals, Clive – guitar, Derek – bass & Richard – drums) were originally going to be called The Epileptic Fits, a name suggested by Colin’s mum, but the band decided that The Epileptics sounded better and were formed in summer of 1978. Crass played in Bishop's Stortford in August 1978 and the two bands got talking. A few weeks later The Epileptics had a gig with Crass at The Basement in Covent Garden. Only five people turned up during the soundcheck, then left. The Epileptics played their set to Crass followed by Crass playing their set to The Epileptics. An alliance had been formed that would last for many years! Complaints of 'ill-conceited jocularity' from The British Epilepsy Association resulted in a name change to Epi-x, later also changed to The Licks by someone from Stortbeat when they released the bands debut "1970s" single (much played by John Peel) a second time when they needed more money. More releases and national acclaim followed, all too much for the local punks to handle so a backlash started and in 1979 the last few gigs ended in slanging matches. They play rough and unpolished UK anarcho-punk as it was customary for the 80s. During the middle of 1980 the band changed their name to Flux Of Pink Indians.

V/A - Killed By Death #15 2018

After a long break there is a new compilation of this cheap series out: #15 with rare New Zealand punk 1977-1982. Well, I think a bit superfluous because most of the songs can be heard on other good compis and really 'new' stuff is not present. I don't want complain and of course it's good that someone puts its 7Inches together and it is important but a little more unknown from countries that are extremely difficult to get would not be wrong, right? Anyway, for all newcomers recommended.

PSYCHED UP JANIS - Vanity EP 1996

Second EP from this Danish combo from Sønderborg with four songs, two from their brilliant debut album 'Swell' and the flip has two live songs which were recorded at Roskilde Festival 1995 and only on this Bitch. I don't know why this band received little resonance internationally, one reason for that may Nirvana were that time the non-plus-ultra in this genre and everyone just listened to their music, on the other hand probably no one looked at the little Denmark and therefore, attention was covered. My girlfriend that time was deeply rooted in Denmark and recorded some of the band's songs on tape for me (I liked them instantly) and then in our vacation in Odense I had the opportunity to buy some albums. And each is a small masterpiece. Psyched Up Janis at home in the typical grunge section, loud & just as hard then Seattle (not so adapted) and their first self-financed EP I Died In My Teens was released in 1995 and one year later this one here. Overall they released five albums and in 1999 the band was history. I can only recommend to buy their albums, each is worth the Euros. Jakob Jørgensen (bass) later formed the band Knallert. Martin Bjerregaard (drums) toured and recorded with Australian punk-band The Saints and later joined the band Racetrack Babies. Sune (vox & guitars) has played with surf-band Tremelo Beer Gut and occasionally with Sort Sol. In 2002 he presented his new band The Raveonettes with Sharin Foo. Excellent record from an excellent Combo - Get It!!

RPB - Sacre Coeur 7'' 1981

R.P.B. (Rock'N'Poetry Band) with his mastermind Rudolf Paul Barcal was an anti product of the new wave era in Vienna. Rudi left "austrias first" punk band Chuzpe in fall 1979 after the Wiener Blutrausch compilation and stayed for three months in the USA. When he came back to Vienna, he founded his own band, unimpressed by new wave and the upcomming bands, with the intention to combine rock and poetry. He was followed by Christian Brandl (also a Chuzpe member), Franky Frauenhofer, Günther Holtschik and jack-of-all-trades Ronnie Urini (Dirt Shit, Kleenex Aktiv, etc...). According to a survey only 15% of the rock music fans listen to the lyrics, the headbanging rest doesn't mind. So Rudi tried to find demanding lyrics from poets that where not so popular, to combine it with rock and to arouse the interrest for the words. 

In 1981 RPB produced their first 7Inch with a little bit different studio lineup, including Ernst Czettel & Michi Egger. The self composed song Sacre Coeur just missed the top ten of the Austrian charts. The flipside Tenebrae is a poem by Paul Celan, translated by Michael Hamburger, and was also released on the followed tape, next to rock versions of poems by Robert Frost, May Swenson, Emily Dickinson and another self composed song "Jean Paul". They gave concerts in Vienna and from Linz to Fischamend. In 1982 the line-up changed, next Rudi there now was Roland Plotz, Ernst Czettel, Michi Egger & Stefan Pfeistlinger. They recorded a rare second 7" in 1982, a strange instrumental rock/pop record.
