V/A - Not So Humdrum 1984

Let's move to down under and visit Sydney and I'm in love with punk from there. This record is the second Aberrant Sydney Compilation and all three records are delicious. Every song's a killer and I can not say more than this is a real damn good record. In 1987 the french label Ripost Records put this album out again with a different cover and a 4-page info sheet which is not included [:(]. Anyway, enjoy great tunes from this area and watch out for the other two volumes.

SUICIDE SQUAD - I Hate School 7'' 1979

Not really new in blogland, but this rare piece of vinyl belongs in my theater because a) it has two fantastic songs on it, and b) it has two fantastic songs on it. I quote: Suicide Squad were formed in 1978 by four schoolmates in Wollongong and consisted of Annie (vocals), Mark (guitars), Con (bass) and Steve (drums), though they relocated to Sydney after struggling to find places to play. After their move they began to build a reputation as a great live band and attracted the attention of Doublethink Records who released their only 7Inch. They then underwent a few line up changes and recorded an album called Vomit On You but this didn't get released until long after they'd split when it came out on Plastic Donut Records (2006) and I would be grateful if someone would send it to me. The band is also featured on a few fantastic Compilations. A Must Listen!

V/A - Where Birdmen Flew Revisited Vol.3 1999

Before I go to the orthopedic surgeon, I take advantage of the free time and send a sign of life with the following fantastic compilation from 'Down Under', a small series called Where Birdmen Flew Revisited enjoyed a small guest appearance at the end of the Nineties and is very welcome in my house. On the one hand because I love the music from there, on the other hand their singles are difficult to obtain in Europe and yes, there are numerous bootlegs with well known bands, which are almost all essential and therefore many of the bands and songs are similar, but we had this theme before, and yet it's good that new or tried-and-tested comps are constantly being published from there and they always piques my interest. It's difficult to get hold of these records these days and unfortunately they always cost a lot of money, but it's worth it. Volume 1 is a killer and this record as well.

1.Heart Attack - WORLD WAR XXIV
2.Piracy - QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE

THE KELPIES - Take Me Away 7'' 1982

One of my favourite Aussie Band are the Kelpies. They were a superb band in Sydney during the early 80s. They began in March of 1981 and, according to the liner notes of their one and only LP, developed "a knack of being banned from venues as quickly as they packed them out." They lasted until August of 1982, leaving behind the Phantom Records single "Take Me Away/Second By Second" and three tracks on the brilliant Aberrant Records compilation Flowers From The Dustbin to go along with their lone album.

The Kelpies consisted of Ashley Thomson along with James Gelding as lead singer, Mark Easton and Brian Conolly on guitars, Con Murphy on bass. Con and Mark had been in the Sydney punk band Suicide Squad, with Mark also having played in the Bedhogs and the delicately named Vic Vomit and the Varicose Veins. James had also been in the Bedhogs & another band called Black Runner. Brian had been in the Swankers & Aftermath.

Their first gig was at the Royal Exhibition Hall on March 27, 1981. The band did well from the start because their members had good reputations among the gig-going crowd from their previous efforts, but they were plagued by violence at many of their gigs. They played places like the Manly Vale Hotel, Sydney Trade Union Club, Sgt. Peppers and Brownies. In May 1981 they recorded a 9 song demo at the 8-track Now Studios in Sydney.

Three of these tunes ("Television", "My Wall", and "Truro Murders") are the ones that appear on Flowers From The Dustbin. After a temporary break up in September 1981, they reformed for another demo recording session in March of 1982. Subsequently they went to a 16 track studio and recorded three more songs, two of which made up the Phantom single. But it wasn't to last; the band played their last gig on July 30, 1982 at Mosman Hotel and split for good in September. They have now reformed and are releasing a new album and doing their first show back on the 9th oct 2003 at the annandale hotel Sydney! (source: mp3.com)

V/A - It's Bigger Than Both Of Us 2 LP 1988

Excellent kiwi release of this essential two record compilation from 1988 covering an extremely creative and buoyant period of New Zealand alternative/punk & pop music between 1979 - 1982 where music of the more "indie" nature really made an impression on the hearts, minds and souls of legions of real music maniacs. So the thirty tracks we get great hits from the likes of The Spelling Mistakes, The Clean, Screaming Meemees, No Tag, Blam Blam Blam, Proud Scum and more other great bands and a number of lesser known but equally thrilling out fits. Lovingly compiled and basing the set purely around singles really gives the listener a feel for the time and era, and a number of these tracks genuinely shaped the sound of New Zealand underground music for many years to come. Even with the current renaissance in 'historical' New Zealand pop compilations this set stands head and shoulders above the rest simply because of its focus and the era covered. This is an essential purchase for any New Zealand music fan.

V/A - Bad Teeth #1: U.K. & Irish Punk Bands 1977-1982

Last post today, and as you're used to in this theater, a great compilation created by Hyped To Death. A little introduction of the label from their page: "Rare, obscure, independent and undiscovered punk, post-punk, "D.I.Y." and Power Pop Groups from the US and UK 1977-1984. Hundreds and hundreds of bands dealing with compilations and dozens of releases of individual acts, all brilliantly restored on CD and custom CDRs. Plus tens of links and liner notes galore..." I think all their releases came out in limited editions and are not uninteresting for collectors. This one is my only copy, and try to find a disc by yourself is similar to finding the Holy Grail, almost impossible. The best way is to contact the label. Well, maybe more will follow or someone out there will send me some. Until then, enjoy it!
