SILENT NOISE - I've Been Hurt 7'' 1979

Appropriate for my physical condition, the following is 7inch and comes from a four piece and was released on Easy Records in an edition of 1000 copies and features two excellent tracks, but in order: Norfolk-based combob which formed 1978 as "Broadside Outcasts" they performed at least one gig with an added saxophonist. The band's name was then changed to Silent Noise after one of Dave's songs and the band consisted of Neil (vocals), Steve (guitars), Dave (bass/vocals), Polo (drums). In 2002 the dutch label Low Down Kids Records released a fantastic compilation "Whatever Happened To Us" with twelve rare goodies and if someone has this, please drop me a mail. Present on a few Compilations, one of them Bloodstains Across The U.K #3, but the four certainly deserve more appearances with their excellent PowerPop stuff. On the road to recovery, I remain yours sincerely.

SUB KIDS - Kids Of Glory 7'' 1983

The Sub Kids were formed in 1978 from the ashes of the Spiders, a group created at the end of 1976 at Grande Synthe just next to Dunkirk, around Fred Rok (13) on vocals/bass, and his brother "Scum" (15 years) on guitar/vocals, André "Ded" Leprince (drums) and a certain Bruno on vocals. England is very close, pirate radios and BBC programs arrive in homes, making all the Punk groups and Pubrock of the moment heard. The Spiders split up, Fred took the guitar and formed the Suburban Kids in 1978 with François "Steve Matchbox" Hyart on bass, Matthieu on drums and Frederic aka "Bubu or Freddy Dustbin" on vocals and then on drums. They open for Les Boys in Dunkirk on January 21, 1978. Scum on rhythm guitar joined the group before leaving for the army in April 1979. On October 27, 1979, they were on stage at the Palais du Littoral Grande Synthe during the Côte d'Opale festival, with Electrons, Identity and After Death, and another at the MJC in Boulogne. They participated in "Live in Dunkerque" on April 18, 1980 with Marnalau Chris, Lead and Bass and Dunedozer at the Coudekerque Branche convention hall, then the Golf Drouot in Paris on January 16, 1981 where they finished third behind Louis XIV and Blitz. February 81, Fred leaves for military service and it is his returned brother Scum who takes the lead. The name is shortened to Sub Kids. The Outcasts are invited to Grande Synthe on May 22, 1981 by the Sub Kids who are opening for them. Matthieu Converty leaves (we will find him in the Butter Cookies) and he is replaced by Bubu, as well as his brother Stéphane who arrives in 1982, which makes two drummers for the formation at that time, like their favorite group Outcasts. The group is going to see the Outcasts again in concert in Paris at the Gibus in December 1982 so that the Irish come again to Dunkirk, which will also be done with the Rats on the bill on January 16. Their first single "Kids Of Glory" was released in early 1983 on the service provider Aaltrack. The latter has a studio in an old converted farmhouse near Ghent. Apart from the Belgian groups, many French will record there, like Rosenthal, the SS Kids, Identity, Electronaze or the Scraps.

The same year, they are on the compilation Chaos En France Vol.1 with the title “Against The Law”. The second EP Boots On Cars was released in 1984, still on Aaltrack. Stéphane leaves the group. The previously unreleased "Don't Be The First" is featured on the New Wave Record compilation 1984 - The First Sonic World War. They also take care of an association, "Sur Les Docks", with the publication of a fanzine of the same name. Fred leaves the group definitively in July 1985 to explore other musical horizons. The Sub Kids continues for a while, a few dates with the Gibus again with the Outcasts, in Reims at the Salle MJC Claudel on March 23, 1985 with Vaterland and at the same place one of their last appearance with the Brigades on October 20, 1986. They stopped definitively in 1987. Fact is, that this group since its beginning 1977, confirms the fact that it is one of the first seminal Punk groups in France, and which is not from Paris. A nine track compilation was released by Negative Records in 1988, followed by the Vinyl Songs CD in 2004 with unreleased tracks and live material. (source: 45vinylvidivici)

THE OUTCASTS - The Punk 7Inches Collection 1995

The following combo is also been a guest in my theater several times and it's the Bad boys of the Ulster Punk scene: The Outcasts - Formed in Belfast in June 1977 by the Cowan brothers: Greg (bass/vocals), Martin (guitars) and Colin (drums). They were joined by Getty on guitar. The band played their first gig in May 1977, playing a mixture of their own songs and cover versions. After building a strong local following, they were picked up by the local It record label, who released the band's debut single, Frustration, in May 1978. They were then signed to Terri Hooley's Good Vibrations label, who released Just Another Teenage Rebel 7Inch in November 1978, which saw the band receiving airplay on national radio from John Peel. And so the history went on. They made three albums and a few 7Inches and all those goodies are united here on this fantastic compilation by Anagram Records.

GENERICS - Societal Hemhorrage EP 1985

Posthumous release of a three-song demo tape from 1983 with an extra track by the Generics from Ontario and the following liner notes come from the great CitizenFreak site: Formed September '80 by Marc (vocals), Chris & Marylou (guitars), Kevin (bass), Billy (drums), first live gig a month later. Total lack of musical ability and young ages of members (average age 15) resulted in being initially ostracized by some of the more elitist members of the local punk "scene". Achieved instant local notoriety by being banned from the only remaining punk bar in the city (The Cedar Lounge) by the end of '80, after only six gigs. Threatened with legal action and blacklisted in attempts to organize all-ages shows, spent the better part of '81 writing new songs, becoming reasonably semi-proficient musicians, recruiting new band member (Billy, ex-Crash 80's drummer). Snuck onto the bill of an NFG gig at the Cedar Lounge in March, promptly banned again, managed to organize one all-ages show in May, otherwise unable to play locally for seven months, so concentrated on out of town gigs until August, when another local bar (Embassy Hotel) opened it's doors to punk/hardcore. Generics were welcomed at the Embassy and became regular headliners!

Attracted increasingly large crowds, resulting in an invitation to open for The Professionals in October, which in turn resulted in an invitation to open for the Forgotten Rebels at the Cedar Lounge. The unbanning lasted only one night as Marc Sahrmann, goaded by the bar owner's son, dove off the stage and attacked him. However, the ban was finally permanently lifted by the beginning of '82. Generics split up in disgust on February 27, 1982 after a particularly discouraging gig in Toronto that involved pretentious, more-hardcore-than-thou bands, neo-nazis, & knife wielding mohicans.

Generics briefly reformed in the summer of '83 (with new bassist John Ondrasek), planned as a one-off opening for D.O.A., but extended to another show with GBH, then a headliner, and finally to a cross country tour playing shows in Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver. While in Vancouver, four songs were recorded at Profile Studio. Booked dirt cheap into the studio early one afternoon at the last minute as a favour by the studio owner to D.O.A., recorded sober and hungover, the session is not a very accurate representation of the band's sound since it was only ever intended as a demo tape to send to clubs in the U.S. who were hesitant to book bands unless they had some they sounded like. One song, "Outcasts Of Society", was only chosen at the last minute because it was going to be dropped from the setlist and it seemed a good idea to get a decent studio recording before tossing it. Needless to say, a planned released record would have been done quite a bit differently.

While on tour, the Generics' van rolled and was totalled. Marc Sahrmann was critically injured and died from his injuries after nine months on life support. He is greatly missed. Marc's last request regarding the Generics was that the Vancouver session be released as a 7" document that we existed, so it was, including even the song that was supposed to be dropped.

Represented on some compilations, but mostly tapes or unofficial ones.

V/A - Now In Session 1982

A wonderfully summer day is coming to an end and I'm about to have a date with a charming woman now and what could be more pleasant than posting a real rarity and first of all my warmest thx to the ripper (which is unknown to me). Now In Session was published on Downtown Radio and this compilation is being offered on discogs for almost €1200, to be honest, this seller have a hole in the head because this slab doesn't have the attributes for an expensive record, I mean, there are records that might deserve such an offer, but here I find it a little exaggerated. - The recordings on this album are unique and I know the music-loving hordes among you can't longer wait to listen to this rare stuff, almost all of them did at least one single and are rather modest in their appearance in the underground world. It's also not a 100% punk record, but anyone who only expects such things on wdthtc can lick my ass anyway.

1.Proramme Love - THE OUTCASTS
2.Teenage Love Song - P45
3.Lady Of The Night - SWEET SAVAGE
4.Too Good To Talk To - SPLITTIN' IMAGE
5.Total Control - RICHMOND HILL
6.I Wonder Why - PROTEX
7.That's What Friends Are For - THE MOONDOGS
8.No Return - PSYCHO
9.Crackin' Up - SAIGON
10.Poisen Noise - PERFECT CRIME

- Fuckin' Great Thx to Nolti -

V/A - Killed By John Peel #1 2020

Friends, there is hope again on the KBD front and after a long time finally a new compilation is out and the creators of Vatican Radio Records have the great idea "to conjure up one of the best punk rock compilations we've heard in a long time, from the amazingly rich vaults of John Peel's BBC 1 radio session recordings. Focusing on the less known side of the huge Peel Sessions catalog, Killed By John Peel comes stuffed to the rafters with mind blowing and little known gems from the opening track with French Synth Punk pioneers Métal Urbain and the incendiary recording of their hit E-202 to the closing with the kick ass Power Pop Punk hit She's Alarming by the Wasps, each and every single track on this monster record presents a band at their prime giving it all @ the legendary BBC Radio1 studios." And to my knowledge, Volume 2 is about to be release and we can look forward to it. Great stuff and absolute essential!

1.E-202 - MÉTAL URBAIN
2.Gangland Warfare - THE OUTCASTS
3.Antipope - KING
4.Yummy Yummy - RUDI
5.Jealousy - IDIOT DANCERS

THE OUTCASTS - Self Conscious Over You 1979

First record finished and I'm a little tired, now I think I'll have a hot tea next and then chill out a bit. But first, another great release: Belfast's Outcasts are most frequently invoked as one of the bands that flourished around the slipstream of Good Vibrations labelmates the Undertones. In fact, single for single (two clicks away), song for song, the Outcasts far outrank their better-known peers and "Self Conscious Over You" is the band's peerless debut album which was released, of course on Good Vibrations Records and has all the hallmarks of the classic Outcasts sound. Eleven nuggets, characterized by the heavy rhythms, prove this. (Words with a little help of Dave Thompson) - The band formed in early 1977, with an initial line up of Blair Hamilton (vocals), Greg Cowan (bass), Colin "Getty" Getgood (lead guitar), and Greg's brothers Colin Cowan (drums), and Martin Cowan (rhythm guitar). According to Greg Cowan, their name derived from the fact that they were banned from five clubs in one week. Hamilton left the band within a month of its formation, with Greg Cowan taking over vocals. More sound by the four on wdthtc is not hidden.

ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE - We Are...The League 1982

It's time for one more classic and one of my TopTen records. The debut by the Anti-Nowhere League on WXYZ Records, founded 1979 in Kent, thirty miles south-east of central London and after some line-up changes this four; Animal (vocals), Magoo (guitars), Winston (bass) & P.J. (drums) recorded this awesome platter and before I go on, I open a delicious Augustiner Bräu. Hmmmm... tastes delicious! The band name alone inspired me immediately and I love people who express their dislike and dissatisfaction, frustration and above all their emotions, in a clear direct language, and don't be afraid of any stupid critics or mobsters who only interfere and say; 'it doesn't work that way!' or 'you have to change that!' ANL went their way and caused a furore with this album, and that's what I like because, I'm as well. And after nearly forty years, the twelve goodies are still shockingly up-to-date and have retained their bite. That's what I appreciate about the four gents. They broke up in 1989 but come back three years later and they're still active! Many records and Singles were made and I hope, they will stay with us for a long time. Two more decent reviews for you that do it better than me, enjoy!

"The years pass, the wheel of time turns, and the shocking, moral-challenging ne'er-do-wells of one generation eventually seem almost sweet when compared with those of later days. Every so often, though, something will remain almost gloriously offensive and wrong no matter what the future brings; the League's filthy gob of a debut album fulfills that brief, and then some. Musically, there's nothing here to surprise or challenge anybody -- already dated three-chord thrash, smash, and bash at the time of its release, years later it just sounds like the type of stuff folks like Offspring listened to while killing time in rehearsal studios. However, for all of the band's protestations of "being shit," the roar is actually reasonably produced, with a good oomph to it instead of becoming too treble. Every so often the band tries something just a tiny bit different (the slow opening to "Woman," which is almost a late-'50s tearjerker in modern leather gear before everything revs up), but mostly they just do what they do. It's vocalist Animal, though, who transforms the League from being just another band to becoming veritable kings of trash. His rough vocals tackle everybody and everything, not least of all himself and his bandmates; suspect sex, random contempt (the brilliantly titled "[We Will Not] Remember You" and "I Hate...People"), and more just scratch the surface. The group even trashes their own medium, as "Can't Stand Rock'N'Roll" concludes "the man who made it was big and fat." The undisputed highlight, of all things, is a cover of Ralph McTell's folk anthem "Streets Of London". Transforming the sympathetic look at the city's outcasts and dregs into a celebratory anthem of defiance, the League delivers one of the best remakes ever done, almost in spite of itself." (Ned Raggett, AllMusic)

"The most viscous mean-spirited, gratuitously violent punk band to come down the pike in a long time." and stated the album was for "mature adults, this is the best hard-core punk record England has yielded since the Sex Pistols era. Every song features a slamming, inescapable beat to match the freely flung obscenities." (Ken Tucker, The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Thirty minutes of outstanding, fresh, ugly and rough punk'n'roll how it could perhaps only be played by the Sex Pistols, but continued in seamless fairways by the amazing Four! "We Are The League..The Anti-Nowhere League..YEAH!"

THE OUTCASTS - Magnum Force 7'' 1981

Bad boys of the Ulster punk scene The Outcasts were formed in Belfast in June 1977 by the Cowan brothers: Greg (bass/vocals), Colin (drums) and Martin (guitar). They were joined by Colin Getgood (better known as Getty) on guitar. They played their debut gig in August of that year at Paddy Lambs pub on Belfasts' Upper Newtownards Road. The gig ended in a mini riot when the local 'Spides' took exception to a number of "strange looking punks" who turned up to watch the band. Their 2nd gig at The Pound Club in Belfast was a lot quieter as they played to a mainly punk audience. This is their fifth 7Inch on GBH Records and sadly this was the last record to feature Colin, who was killed in a car accident, shortly before the single was released. The A-side is a nice slow stomper while the flip's a decent rockin' killer. Three albums are released to date, plus some compilations with rare tracks from the early days.

- Great Thx to Fredrik -

V/A - British Underground 1977-1982 Vol.2

There are days I really like to sit at the computer and postin' some rare stuff, today is such a day, and let's come to the last cream on this coldy Sunday and it's an unoffical compilation from Chaos Wrecords, released in an edition of 700 hand-numbered copies (I think in 1994) and this fourteen British Underground pieces are certainly not the best of UK punk & wave goodies (in my opinion) but it's another piece of countless bootlegs (it's good that they exist) and the song selection is not bad. I cannot say how I came across this series but it was worth and I bought this record via ebay. I love English punk and with the Disco Zombies and Crisis are two of my favorite bands on it, so bring it on. Of course required Volume 1 and a total of three slabs of this mini-serie were released to date and the last one follows then in 2022. Now enjoy the rest weekend with beautiful music, cold beer and other intoxicating means + the sun.

1.Fun In The UK - POP RIVETS
2.Vital Hours - THE OUTSIDERS
3.Time Tunnel - ENGLISH SUBTITLES
4.Active Repetition - PRODUCT OF REASON
5.You're A Disease - THE OUTCASTS

THE ESTRANGED - Static Thoughts 2008

Yesterday I was at a gig from The Outcasts and it was a damn cool evening. Superb action and I want to post a record from them but I have nothing, haha....what a disgrace! Well, instead this great one: The Estranged are a post-punk band from Portland, Oregon. They started out in 2006. They play dark and foreboding guitar driven music with a relentless sense of urgency in a similar vein to The Wipers, Wire, Joy Division and The Cure. With their 1st album Static Thoughts, The Estranged attempt to combine the volatile combination of post-punk and punk with positive results on the whole. The album could have been a disaster on the scale of the Hindenburg, but instead is a balanced combination of contemporary post-punk songs that rely on traditional punk rock’s finer cornerstones - two to three minute numbers that are fast, simple, catchy, and - in this case - bleak. Indeed, Static Thoughts is more than a throwback to a deceased genre; The Estranged cultivate their bleak post-punk sound with a heavy lean on punk rock giving the often angsty music a much needed rainy day. Crossing musical genre’s is a risky but this album is clever, quick and done with so much gusto so that the crossover is not even felt. (Justin) Great record!
