CANAL TERROR - Zu Spät 1983

Next classic German Punk album is the debut record from Canal Terror and I don't know how many times I played this LP up and down: angry, aggressive, rebellious music which has nothin' lost of their rudeness. Founded 1980 in Bonn by Tommy, Volker and Dominik, 15 to 17 years old, in the following year 14-year-old drummer Rainer completed the band. 1981 published the first demo recordings and a Super-8 film on which they introduced for the first time their most popular song 'Staatsfeind'. In December, the band participated on the compilation Soundtracks Zum Untergang 2 (AGR). Canal Terror played this year their first concerts outside of Cologne and Bonn with Black Flag, Minutemen, Slime, OHL, etc... More demo tapes were released in the following two years. In December 1982 they recorded their debut LP, appeared due to differences with label boss Karl-Ulrich Walterbach, in the spring of 1983. Tommy left the band in 1983 after internal disputes and Rainer moved to the micro. Ex-Toxoplasma bassist Stefan came as a drummer. Frank Glienke ("KutA") was for a few concerts the second guitarist but left the band very soon. The group toured again with Razzia, Inferno, Neurotic Arseholes, Boskops, Die Ärzte, etc... and the recordings for the compilation Underground Hits 2 emerged. Again it come to quarrels and Dominik and then Volker left the band. The band continued until 1984 by Rainer and Stefan and with other members. On the Dutch sampler 'Babylon Bleibt Fahren' the song "Staatsfeind" was in a live version on it and shortly after this release the band split up for good. In December 1991 the band played in the original line-up a unique concert in the Biscuithalle/Bonn, together with Toxoplasma, Die Skeptiker and the British band Urge. In 1992 Red Rossetten Records released a CD with recordings of this gig under the title "Live In Bonn". AGR reissued without the permission of the band their first album in the 90's and so Canal Terror secured in a trial against AGR the rights to their songs. A Review: "Canal Terror produce diverse hardcore material on their debut album, including full-tilt thrash ("Multis," the title cut, etc.), Oi!-influenced stuff ("Bonn-Duell"), '77 punk with melodic guitars ("100 Mann"), reggae-punk mixtures ("Mallorca"), some cool Rock'N'Roll ("Hey"), and even a funnypunk version of "My Bonnie." The guitars should have been emphasized more in the mix, but this record is still entertaining as hell." - Jeff Bale (from MMR #8, September 1983) / That's the story so far, for me another major record which is second to none today.

V/A - Soundtracks Zum Untergang 2 1982

One of the best compilations ever from Germany are the first two AGR goodies. All bands are great, all songs are damn classics. With these both I grew up. The music is just sensational and the lyrics quite offensive, creating real doom mood. I don't know how often this sound shows me that I'm on the right track (haha) and I mean together with the 'Keine Experimente' compilations from Weird system are these four records the most important and best plates which were ever published here in fuckin' germoney. I think the resonance overseas was accordingly positive. Today this record is re-released but the band name from the Böhse Onkelz was deleted... pitiful if you ask me, but that's another story. 19 glamorous tracks from the good old days and incidentally a request of a good friend is fulfilled. GET IT!!!

V/A - Underground Hits 2 1983

Another classic Punk Compilation is this record and I found a good review so I can save any useless words: "In the early to mid 1980s, hardcore punk was on the rise and in some cases the records were selling in the thousands, especially the LPs. There was a whole slew of independent record distributors stocking this new exciting music and the records were finding their way into more and more stores. During this time, the German label Aggressive Rock Produktionen had the idea to start licensing some US hardcore records for release overseas in their home country in an effort to have the records available locally, and not as pricey imports. The label also did a pair of compilations called Underground Hits. Volume One had a pretty equal mix of US and German bands while this one, Volume Two, featured mostly US bands. What was unique about this one was that some of the tracks on here were exclusive to this comp and would be that way for years." - Thanks for this!

CANAL TERROR - Live In Bonn 1991

Now to a band, which I appreciate very much and support me in difficult times, then as now, with their great songs from Zu Spät, the only album by Canal Terror on Aggressive Rock Produktionen and in my opinion a real German Punk Nugget. So this fucking live album was recorded at "Schöne Bescherung" - Festival 26/12/1991 @ Biskuithalle/Bonn and line-up on this unforgettable evening were Tommy (vocals), Dominik (guitars), Volker (bass), Wolfgang (drums) and almost all hits were performed, including two tracks from the 2nd best German Sampler Soundtracks Zum Untergang 2, and all these are best ingredients for an entertaining and happy evening... I know that because I was able to see the band live, and the four on stage are no bores and I think, this beauty historical audio document comes across brilliantly into your house, everything else is seven of spades.

MOLOTOW SODA - Keine Träume 1989

A real revelation is the debut of Molotow Soda on Day-Glo and the quartett has partly emerged from the ashes of the grandiose Canal Terror. A short bio of the beginning from their homepage: "In 1986, bassist Heiner from Bonn was offered the opportunity to appear on the Sampler Kulturschock Attacke 2 with a song from his band. The problem was that his band had just broken up. In order to take up the opportunity, he convinced musician friends to take part in the project and, together with Tommy (vocals), Volker (guitars) and Tommes (drums), the song “Just A Lie” was recorded in some semi-professional recording studio (actually it was more of a hobby cellar on the very edge of civilization). A little later, in a boozy gathering, the band name Molotow Soda was born, along with the drink of the same name (1 bottle of Blue Curacao, 1 bottle of eggnog, 1 bottle of rum and lots of lemon concentrate were mixed in a 5-liter canister) and, due to the pleasant “collaboration”, it was agreed that the band would continue." This album bites with every song and must infect everyone (if not, Fuck Off!), such fantastic lyrics (not nearly as obviously political as they were in the Canal Terror days, most of them still had a socially critical view), seventeen dynamic blasts and Tommy's characteristically distinctive voice is the crown to all and with a record like this, posting is fun again. Musically, they were clearly different from the rousing sound of most D-Punk bands at the time, they mastered their instruments excellently and remained true to the rough sound of the glory early days: hard & loud and always worth a visit live!

V/A - Underground Hits 1 1982

- First part of Underground Hits on AGR, brilliant song selection, first-class record, if you see this, a must buy! V/A - Beethovens Rache 1988

Bonn was the capital city of Germany a few years ago and it was time for a compilation with bands from Bonn and the label 'Bönnsche Ton' finally released it in 1988 (Another release have a green cover) and it has become a true gem. Eight bands in total and each song is a hit. FFF, Molotow Soda (Ex-Canal Terror), Rabatz to name a few are on it and some material is nowadays unreleased and thus rare. Today it's very difficult to get a copy and my vinyl here I have acquired at a record fair for a lot of money. Beethoven's Revenge is a solid German Punk sampler which can be proud of and my appreciation to the creators, nice artwork, detailed booklet, all included: Big One! In 2002 is one more record called 'Beethovens Alptraum' released with more stuff from the Bonn Punk scene. Long live Ludwig Van...

V/A - Red Rossetten Records Proudly Present EP 1995

Well, your participation in the prediction game is very modest and I think it's a shame, try something different and it's certainly interesting which teams you would favor. Well, we have a handful and I'm setting the deadline for your last instincts on Sunday evening 18:00 CET.

The following small but great 7Inch fits perfectly to Euro 2020, all six bands come from countries that take part in the tournament and half of them were recorded live, all known with famous Gassenhauer and the record should be only appeared as promo, at least readable on the labels, but I think that's a hoax. Never mind, a fertile slab and convincing like yesterday's appearance by the Italian team. Now the second game with Switzerland, which is traded as secret favorite.. hmmm, let's see.

1.Punx Picnic - OI POLLOI
2.Class War - RAMZES & THE HOOLIGANS
3.Skins & Punx - BLANC ESTOC
4.A.C.A.B. - CONTEMPT
5.Staatsfeind - CANAL TERROR
6.No Future - ATEMNOT

V/A - Bollox To The Gonads - Here's The Testicles 1984

Very cool compilation on Pax Records with twelve combos, mostly from Europe, and the selection is quite okay. I mean, thirty songs on a record is not common for the time and that makes this record all more interesting. A review: "The Pax label is doing some valuable work with the best of intentions. They’ve gone international on this, the follow-up to their Punk Dead? Nah Mate compilation. This time around, they include four uropean, eight English, and one American band. Most of them are real strong and really tear it up, so don’t miss it." (Ruth Schwartz, MMR, Oct/Nov.1983) - Re-released as a cheap CD-R by Retro Records but the original is obviously better. An insert was to my knowledge not included. Enjoy!

TOXOPLASMA - s/t LP 1983

Ahhhhh, the monitor problem is fixed and finally it goes forward in this theatre and I throw another german punk classic out. Toxoplasma came from Neuwied and were founded 1980 by Wally (vox), Stefan (bass), Harry (drums) and Markus (guitar), who was replaced after only a few samples by Uwe. The band name derives from the infectious disease toxoplasmosis, in which the singer Wally fell ill in the late 1970s. In 1981 they released a demo and one year later the band was represented on the German-American compilation Underground Hits of the Berlin label Aggressive Rockproduktionen (AGR) with three pieces, where they published the first album in the following year. At the same time, the band went on tour with the American reggae/hardcore punx Bad Brains through Germany. After this tour, Stefan switched to Canal Terror as drummer and Thomas "Mitch" Michel joined the band as bassist. In 1985, Harry got out too. After further changes and failures, the band broke up in 1986 for the first time. In the early 1990s Wally, Mitch and Uwe recorded with a drum computer new records with metal influence and that was it then for me. Their debut is still a great record and belongs definitely one of the top twenty German punk slabs.
