BAD BRAINS - I Against I 1986

Weekend, Yeah and let's fetz with classic Washington Punkrock by the Bad Brains and I Against I is their third album through SST Records and the best-selling record in the band's catalog. After the first of their countless breakups, the Bad Brains reconvened in 1986 to record this, their undeniable masterwork. Fusing dub reggae and funk rhythms into the mix, and slowing the tempo down enough to appeal to hardcore's emergent metal crossover audience, the Bad Brains created one of the most powerful collections the '80s produced in any genre. On "I Against I" and "House Of Suffering," the quartet suffuses traditional Jamaican spiritualism with modern urban concerns, while the soaring "Sacred Love" is guaranteed to send shivers down the spine of anyone with any soul whatsoever. An essential release.

V/A - Underground Hits 1 1982

- First part of Underground Hits on AGR, brilliant song selection, first-class record, if you see this, a must buy! Volume 2 is a bit weaker in my opinion but has exclusive tracks from Spux and Canal Terror, get it!

THE MIDDLE CLASS - Out Of Vogue [The Early Material] 2008

The Middle Class were an American four piece established 1976 in Santa Ana/California and consisted of Jeff (vocals), Mike (guitar), Mike P. (bass), Bruce (drums). Debate continues to this day as to whether Middle Class were the first Hardcore combo or if Black Flag or Bad Brains were. It is unlikely that Bad Brains were aware of Middle Class, however, as they were unknown outside of California. Their sound evolved from being a blistering, shouted, arty version of punk which would be extremely influential to the hardcore sound that would emerge in the years following their first release, the 1978 Out Of Vogue 7Inch. This record featured the title track along with three other songs. After this they released the Scavenged Luxury 7'' in 1980 which retained the assault of the first record while introducing the influence of UK bands Gang Of Four and Joy Division. 1982 saw the release of their first full length album, the dark Homeland. Their first seven inches were rereleased on the compilation album "Blueprint For Joy" along with several live tracks and songs they contributed to the Tooth & Nail compilation.

In the mid-1980s Mike & Bruce Atta briefly formed a soul/dance band with former The Bags vocalist Alice Bag called the Cambridge Apostles. Bassist Mike Patton went on to produce the Adolescents' first album, guitarist Mike Atta now owns and operates a vintage furniture shop in Fullerton, California called "Out Of Vogue", and drummer Bruce Atta went on to UCLA to major in Philosophy and now teaches Philosophy at Cal State University at Los Angeles. And now enjoy this fifteen track collection (Frontier Records) with their two EPs, compi tracks & rare demos.

EVEN WORSE - We Suck! The Lost 1982 Album 2016

Now a slab where I have again to say: Thank You! to the makers who have re-released this delicious music again. Was only available as lame CD under the title You've Ruined Everything 2002 and I wanna quote this nugget with words of the detectives: "One of the best kept secrets of the early pre-NYHC scene, along with Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Heart Attack, Undead, Kraut, etc., the never-on-vinyl-before lost album by Even Worse, featuring "Big Takeover" magazine editor Jack Rabid (and previously Beastie Boys' founder John Berry, and eventually Noise the Show host/Hugo Largo's Timmy Sommer, and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore's only punk rock band in a later incarnation), with their classic "New York Thrash" compilation lineup recorded at the famous 171A studio, co-produced by Bad Brains, with additional live tracks from New York's legendary Max's Kansas City Club from August 1981. Limited to 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl plus a revealing insert. (Radiation/ 2016)" - A twenty-two course menu that guaranteed fill you up and maybe, if there's enough space, a little piece of mint afterwards. Colossal Stuff!!

V/A - Best Of Limp 1980

Limp Records was an independent record label based out of Rockville, Maryland that operated from 1978 until 1982. Run by Skip Groff out of his Yesterday and Today Records store, Limp was one of the first labels releasing music from the nascent D.C. punk scene. The label's more notable output includes the first Bad Brains release (a song on The Best of Limp (… Rest of Limp), the second Minor Threat record (a split release with Dischord), and the first record by Black Market Baby. The label's first release was the Slickee Boys second EP. 1000 copies released, comes in a plain cardboard sleeve with two 11.75" x 11.75" flats. Back cover of the regular issue is rubber stamped with a number (the test press back is pictured). Full recording details in the file. A fine release with massive hits!!

THE MOB - We Come To Crush 1986

"Second album by the Mob from New York on Big City Records. The band were formed 1980 and began when Jack Flanagan left the group Heart Attack to form his own group with Ralph (vocals), John (bass), and Nicko (drums). After being exposed to hardcore through a Bad Brains show at CBGB, the group started playing harder and faster, moving away from the sound of the first wave of New York City Punk rock bands. In 1981, Jose Gonzalez officially joined the group, following John Frawley's departure to join Heart Attack, and Jamie Shanahan replaced Nicko on drums. The band continued, more or less with this lineup until 1991, when they went on a hiatus that would last nearly twenty years, with only a handful of sporadic shows and releases. In 2011 the group reunited to play live shows and record new music once again."

BLACK MARKET BABY - Baby Takes 1991

Oh Yeah, one of my favourite DC bands are Black Market Baby, I have their album but not the 7inches and like a revelation I get now sent this fantastic collection. Clear that it is my damned duty to confront you and this tidbit is worth every fucking tone. The name Black Market Baby was suggested by Keith (guitars) after seeing a trashy tv movie of the same name and the band were founded in 1980. The band's first record 'Potential Suicide' was released via Limp Records in 1981. Two years later their only full length 'Senseless Offerings' came out on Fountain Of Youth Records and is in my opinion one of the best US punk records, songs like 'Downward Christian Soldiers', 'Killing Time' or 'I See-You See' are grandiose played smasher, fuckin' rare record. In 1988 the band could not find a label to release the next album they broke up, playing a farewell gig in January 1988. In 1990 the label Yesterday And Today released two more singles, 'World At War' (Split with Bad Brains) and 'Drunk & Disorderly'. They loosely re-formed in 1993, playing the occasional show and recording sparingly before calling it quits again in 1997. So this collection was released by the Hamburg label Bitzcore and is full with bombs. A short review from the inoffical BMB site: "Half the Senseless Offerings LP and a bunch of stuff from '86—the unreleased material is some of BMB's strongest stuff, loud, punishing, hard-edged punk." - Excellent idea and certainly sell out very quickly, don't be a moron and make a choice.

V/A - Let's Die 1985

Einen habe ich noch für Euch heute und diese compilation wurde vom legendären California based label Mystic Records released and we have sixteen times cool Deathrock at its finest. A really excellent selection of songs come from largely unknown bands, some of which only made it onto this slab. On the one hand, that may be due to the time, in the mid-80s this genre was rather new (don't think about the Misfits) and merged later into what we call gothic rock today, that's how I think. And everybody who has been to a black night disco will agree with me. On the other hand, I suspect little money for further studio sessions, negative label replys or different conflicts within the bands. Egal, was sich hier tummelt ist exzellent und für Mitte der 80ziger sehr anständig. Vorab würde ich Dance With Me von T.S.O.L. empfehlen, you will be in good hands.

1.Inside - FALSE CONFESSION
2.The Noose - SUBTERFUGE
3.Hellhouse - A.W.O.L.
4.Let's Die - PATRICK MATA
5.Slaughter Hotel - THIEVES CROSS
6.Darkest Dream - PARTY DOLL
7.When Bobby Comes Back From The Grave - WHITE PIGS
8.Innocent Me - THE MESS
9.In The Night - ILL REPUTE
10.Kill The Dead - SLAUGHTERHOUSE 5
11.Hives - BURNING IMAGE
12.Bad Brains - THE DRAB
13.Suicide - SILVER CHALICE
14.The Edge - SAMSONS ARMY
15.Day Of The Jackal - THE STAIN
16.Necrology - FLOWER LEPERDS

THE ARGUMENTATIVE BASTARDS - s/t 12'' 1989

A fine record is now waiting and I quote a little info from the essential upthepunks site, the source for music/bands from down under: TAB began playing in 1988 with a set of originals and smattering of Black Sabbath and Agnostic Front covers. Guitarist Simon Gotlieb (previously of After Shock and Compos Mentis) was originally on vocals before Aaron Watson joined, with this early version also including Hamish Laing on rhythm guitar. The band played fairly regularly in Wellington’s late 1980s’ scene with gigs alongside other local acts Flesh D-Vice, Microwave Babies, The Sub-Dominants and a young metal act out of Wellington High School called Shihad. In early July of 1989 TAB went into Writhe Studios and recorded the seven songs for their sole-release 12'', the sound is a meld of punk/metal/hardcore/reggae with TAB veering across a number of musical lines and ending in a punked up version of John Denver’s: (Take Me Home) Country Roads. The record starts with Brave New Soldiers a song credited to Kevin Kermack who played with Simon and J.P de Raad in early 1980’s thrash-punk outfit Aftershock. The next two tracks, Kill The Dogs and Fred are 80s metal riffs within a punk framework, with 3rd track Fred breaking down into a slow-tempo reggae beat half-way through before jumping back into thrash tempo. The B-sides three original tracks takes a leaf out of Bad Brains with Video Nasty and Used Prophylactics showing Watson’s strong vocals can throw out a halfway decent H.R. yelp, while third track Sniffin is a slow tempo reggae/ punk song based on seeing kids glue sniffing in Porirua. The Argumentative Bastards EP was released at The Carpark off Willis Street on June 21, 1990 with 500 vinyl copies pressed on New Plymouth label Ima Hitt. The gig was videoed and there were plans for some form of video release with interviews, three new songs and footage of people smashing cans of beer on their heads. A second EP, Ganja and Chocolate Fish, was also recorded but not released before the band split up, and now languishes on tape somewhere in the Hutt Valley. In June 1991, TAB played at New Plymouth’s notorious Mushroom Ball where vocalist Aaron ensured one of TAB’s last gigs was seared into the psilocybin plastered minds of those in attendance by igniting his pubic hair on stage.

TOXOPLASMA - s/t LP 1983

Ahhhhh, the monitor problem is fixed and finally it goes forward in this theatre and I throw another german punk classic out. Toxoplasma came from Neuwied and were founded 1980 by Wally (vox), Stefan (bass), Harry (drums) and Markus (guitar), who was replaced after only a few samples by Uwe. The band name derives from the infectious disease toxoplasmosis, in which the singer Wally fell ill in the late 1970s. In 1981 they released a demo and one year later the band was represented on the German-American compilation Underground Hits of the Berlin label Aggressive Rockproduktionen (AGR) with three pieces, where they published the first album in the following year. At the same time, the band went on tour with the American reggae/hardcore punx Bad Brains through Germany. After this tour, Stefan switched to Canal Terror as drummer and Thomas "Mitch" Michel joined the band as bassist. In 1985, Harry got out too. After further changes and failures, the band broke up in 1986 for the first time. In the early 1990s Wally, Mitch and Uwe recorded with a drum computer new records with metal influence and that was it then for me. Their debut is still a great record and belongs definitely one of the top twenty German punk slabs.

V/A - A Wicked Good Time! 1981

One more compilation and this one's from the Boston label Modern Method Records and from "A Wicked Good Time" exist two volumes, this is #1, and we have thirteen bands, mostly unknown to me, which are somewhere between punk and alternative rock at home and they all made a record in the first period of the eighties, and the music is not quite punky but surprisingly good and not bad at all. The record starts really good with solid mid-tempo goodies but flattens out a little in the second half, not boring I would say, but it gets a bit out of hand and loses a little in lame mood music. All in all a good slab that isn't be worth fifty euros, but at least it can serve as listening pleasure until the match against the VfB in forty-five minutes.

1.Psycho Blonde - PASTICHE
2.3rd Floor For Me - THE OUTLETS
3.New Feeling - FUTURE DADS
4.I Wasn't Me - BOYS LIFE

FORD'S FUZZ INFERNO - Flog Yourself With Fuzz EP 2022

Bridging the gap between distorted garage-punk and early '80s hardcore, the super explosive second EP by this fuzzed-uit Dutch guitar-and-drums duo is certainly one of the most impressive releases of 2022. "Hans & Patrick are back with hard hitting, hi-energy Punkrock, recorded specially for your hungry ears! This time around all the songs are about super enjoyable things, like the apocalypse, mental health issues and Mr. Hans’ and Mr. Patrick’s favourite pastime, demolishing other people’s property. Have you ever done that? It’s great fun. You should really give it a try! But before you start smashing windows and kicking dents into cars, play these four songs as loud as possible. They will put you in the exact right mood!" And that's right folks; on this record they are more melodic, more playful and more mid-tempo, but still catchy and with the typical fuzz sound. I really like it and I can highly recommend this band to you, Ford's Fuzz Inferno is playing PunkRock and doesn't just talk about it and deniers will be executedTheir third strike will follow in April and a compilation CD with all Fuzzies is also being planned, so keep your eyes, ears and brains wide open. Two reviews: "They have kept the quality, with another collection of fast, catchy, melodic hardcore songs. Just need two things from the guys now, A full length album and some live shows in the UK!" (Issue Punkzine #117)

"A release with short high energy tracks in the Ford’s Fuzz Inferno punk tradition: unpolished DIY noisy punk rock’n’roll. It comes with a good sound quality and again with a simple white and black medieval artwork. Too bad it's over before you know it." (Out Of Step - Fanzine/Blog February 2022)

Your weekend's nice & with this EP it will be even more sweeter, ask your partner!

BRATS - 1980 Brats

Let's start this Sunday with a Metal post and I use some info from discogs because I'm in a hurry: "Brats was a Danish band from Copenaghen formed in 1977 as a punk band. After recording the songs "Dreams", "I Do What I Wanna Do" and "Magazine" for Danish Pære Punk compilation, the band split up in 1979, not much later reforming as a heavy metal band (playing a hybrid of punk and metal) with new members. This line-up signed a contract with CBS in 1980 and released the promotional debut single B-Brains and one self-titled full length album. The band later transformed into the pure non-punkish heavy metal band Mercyful Fate." If you want more then get the Lost Tapes compilation too - Not a bad record, eleven nice metal pieces, including two punky ones.
