SEMINAL RATS - Omnipotent M-LP 1987

The Seminal Rats were an Australian punk/indie rock band, based in Melbourne, who existed from 1984 until the accidental heroin overdose death of lead guitarist Michael Weber on January 2, 1999. One of the best post-Birdman outfits of their time, their sound was an anthemic, loud and reckless combination of their musical inspirations: Saints, Detroit rock, '60s garage and American hardcore. More Info at the bands MySpace, worth a look.

LOS VIOLADORES - s/t LP 1983

Fantastic debut album by this legendary punk band from Argentina, Los Violadores. They deserve the full description which I lending from the essential kfth page: Despite its demographic size and socio–cultural importance in Latin America, and unlike Brazil, Mexico or Colombia, Argentina didn't produce many first rate hardcore and punk bands during the 80's. But still, Los Violadores are probably among the pioneers of Punk Rock in the area. Guitarist Hari B. formed Los Testiculos in Buenos Aires in 1978, while the military dictatorship (who ruled the country between 1976 – 1983) was at the peak of their power. The regime, that in a couple of years murdered more then 30.000 left wing activists (or that were suspected to be so), saw any act of non–conformity as potentially subversive, so obviously the first generation of Argentinian punks was very much underground. But they still managed to survive.

In 1980, Hari B., together with drummer Gramatica, changed their name to Los Violadores. Due to censorship, they were unable to publicly use the new "offensive" name for a while, so they ommitted just one letter and remained "Los Voladores" for the early show fliers. About a year later, they were joined by vocalist Pil Trafa and bassist Stuka. After one of the first shows with this line up, about 200 hundred persons were arrested and the band members were charged with "political disturbance", thus gaining public notoriety and making it clear that Punk was alive in Argentina. As they put it "We wanted to make something that was punk but still rooted in our reality. We didn't want to be part of the complacent Argentinian rock scene, which was silent during the dictatorship and thus partner for the atrocities". They were one of the few bands which refused to take part in a huge rock concert sponsored by the military dictatorship as part of the Falkland/ Malvinas war propaganda campaign, even though they were surprisingly invited to participate. Ironically, many of those who did appear there were actually self professed hippies, who probably saw punk as something "violent & fascistic". Los Violadores pointed at that hypocritical "hippy ideology" as their second main enemy after the military regime.

Also in 1982 they recorded their first (self titled) LP, which could only hit the streets in late 1983, after democratic elections took place. It was released by the Argentinian independent label Umbral and it includes 12 great tracks with excellent production. Unlike the raw, thrashy hardcore produced in neighboring Brazil, Los Violadores are more '77 influenced, althought with an updated sound, kinda like Generation X meets DOA.

After the return of democracy, Hari B, who thought that the main reason of existance for the band was to fight the dictators hip, quit. He played for a short time with Argentinian's Oi! pioneers Comando Suicida, long before they became full-fledged boneheads. In 1984, Los Violadores were asked to contribute a track for the now legendary P.E.A.C.E. compilation, being the sole representatives of Latin American punk among the 40+ other bands and maybe making a small name for themselves in the international punk community. In fact, Argentinian rock magazines reported that there was lots of interest in the band from Europe and that they sold thousands of copies in the "old world", but that seems pretty unlikely.

By then, they were already changing direction towards a more commercial one, something typical for many bands from the era. Their second mini album Y Ahora Que Pasa Eh? is definately more rock/pop influenced, but in my opinion still enjoyable. They kept playing until the early 90's and even after that, they reformed several times, but their output is totally irrelevant to these pages. Their old material was reissued on CD by the major they had signed with, but their first LP was bootlegged on vinyl a couple of years ago. (source: killfromtheheart)

OVERDOSE - Tight Action 1985

This post is dedicated to my former work colleagues Joe and Rainer with whom I had a great time in the 80s in the Rotfabrik and I hope you two are doing well. Both were members of Overdose, a heavy metal band from Frankfurt and I borrowed the album and immediately captured on tape and these days I have somehow their music in my head and thought it would be nice to post this platter here. But I found the damn tape nowhere so I get a copy in the net and to my surprise, the album was re-released in 2009 with new artwork, plus their second demo 'Heavy Metal' from 1984 and a short story of the band inside. It is long ago that I heard the record but this is excellent classic melodious Heavy Metal with balls! Here's a review: "There are so many metal bands by that name, but this is the real deal. Their only release in 1985 is a pure metal Masterpiece loaded with killer heavy metal music, with clever arrangements, cool vocals and fantastic rhythm changes and razor sharp riffs. A bombastic piece of steel, so here it is for all you metal thirsty freaks!" I think this record is a matter of taste and not everyone likes it but for me it's a little nostalgic trip, filled with beautiful memories and still kickin'.

V/A - Göteborgs Rock-Ytterrock 1982

Gothenburg was a stronghold of Swedish underground music, punk, wave rock or whatever. This compilation belongs to the genre Rock, this means no real punk platter. Apart from F.K.M. I know not only band here but I love surprises. Released via Pang Records is this stuff partly for me too gammy, for example the Backstreet tracks are a pain in the ass, as well as Blå Schäfer and Kamrat Desperat. Positives are Nya Ambulansen with nice female vox and F.K.M., the rest is so Olala, not really for a punk rocker like me, but sure there are probably some of you have sought this record and therefore I had mercy.

1.Jag Såg Dej En Morgon - NYA AMBULANSEN
2.Tiden - NYA AMBULANSEN
3.I Europa - BACKSTREET
4.Vi Sticker Iväg - BACKSTREET
5.Du Får Mej Att Glömma - MIRAGE
6.En Sann Dröm - MIRAGE
7.Trad. - BLÅ SCHÄFER
8.Why Don´t You Listen? - BLÅ SCHÄFER
9.Katedral - KAMRAT DESPERAT
10.Ingenting - KAMRAT DESPERAT
11.Förlorad Identitet - MALTA FEBER
12.Liv Och Död - MALTA FEBER
13.Nattromans - MIDNIGHT
14.Movin' On - MIDNIGHT
15.Galen Hund - F.K.M.
16.Bomber Som Faller - F.K.M.

VAMPIRE STATE BUILDING - nXt EP 1995

First A Warning! this is not punkrock but it kicks as well. My first contact with the band was I think in 1997, my girlfriend at that time gives me a tape with a song on it and I was instantly impressed. Later I heard their only album 50 Hz Broken and this is really great. I'm really glad to have found a little info about this extraordinary band so I give you a bit of it:

"Vampire State Building was a hard rocking techno/industrial/goth band with an original sound that incorporated many different styles. Calm atmospheric interludes give way to all hell breaking out, techno landscapes are punctuated by strange samples, sweet female vocals compete with grinding beats. Their two singles are, unexpectedly enough, covers of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Bronski Beat songs, and their poppy version of the latter ("Smalltown Boy") became a hit on Norwegian radio. The cliché fits: Expect the unexpected with Vampire State Building. The band was only active a few years, and unofficially disbanded after working on their second album, which was to be released in 1997. However, they attracted a lot of attention, and they are a band that was ahead of their time in their music, performance, and image. Members of Vampire State Building have gone on to enjoy success in Zeromancer, Lonely Crowd, and Red Harvest." (source: opelwerk.com)

I recommend urgently the side because it is really very informative and of course to procure the album. Energetically, romantically, and damn good lyrics waiting for you and I promise: you will be amazed. This EP was their last release and the following video is a song of a compilation, as a small bonus within. It would be nice to know how you find this.

DECIBELIOS - Caldo De Pollo 1984

Let's start November with a classic. I'm cold and I am not made for cold hence to Spain. Decibelios are a cool Oi! Streetpunk band from Barcelona and were formed in 1980 and dissolved ten years later. They recorded five albums and several singles. They are considered as the first group of Oi! in Spain and largely responsible for the introduction of this movement in the country. First line-up were Fray (vox), Miguel (drums), Xavi (guitar), Macia (guitar) and Manolo (bass) and the group's original name was "dB". Some time later there was an American group that responded to the acronym of "dB" (The dB's) so they renamed in Decibelios. After their first concert in Madrid on March 20, 1982 they signed a contract with the DRO label and recorded their first single 'Paletas Putrefactos' which was published same year. Xavi left the band after recording and in 1982 came as a new guitarist Manel until 1990. 'Paletas Y... Bolingas', their 2nd 7Inch came out and one year later the debut record 'Caldo De Pollo' saw the light of day. Eleven fantastic streetpunk goodies, exactly the sound how I like and they impress the skinhead/punk scene a lot. For me their best record. 1996 as CD re-released with two bonus cuts. Gotta go now out into the world and maybe later one more post. Salud!

FRISCHE FARBE - Die Stärke Im Minimum 12'' 1982

Swiss group formed circa 1978 in Aarau by guitarist Gutze Gautschi. They started as a punk band featuring Dieter Meier, however, Meier left after two singles, "Cry For Fame" (released as 'Dieter Meier') and "No Chance" (released as 'Fresh Color'). Meier went on to form Yello. Fresh Color released further singles in their punk style. In the early 80's, Gutze Gautschi assembled a new band including drummer Danny Amsler and their sound moved into a more poppy new wave. Fresh Color started to include synthesizers and developped a distinct dubby production style. Then 'Frische Farbe' was created and release songs in German language; the band's debut longplayer "Die Stärke Im Minimum" (1982) was released via Gold Records. In 1984, Fresh Color shrunk to the duo of Gutze Gautschi and Danny Amsler. On the singles "Disco Nature" and "Get On Up", the duo merged their new wave background with disco and electro. When songwriter and vocalist Humphrey Robertson joined the group, they had their biggest success with "Disco Future" and released their second album, "Nightdreams", in 1985. Soon after, all of the three went into producing a large number of different projects. At the end of the nineties, Gautschi tried to revive Fresh Color. Enjoy now this four great NDW/Pop Love songs here, the a-side in german, the flip in english. Not Bad!

MISFITS - Earth A.D./Wolfsblood 1983

Last Night I had a sleepless one, too much confusion, too many thoughts I can't handle so I choose a record which helps a lot. Can't tell why all this trouble's in my head but I'm always seemingly disillusioned, disappointed. I guess, I got a bang. Scheiß Drauf! So that's the reason I can't go to work today and you'll see what album I post now and it's superfluous to say something about this brilliant band. The Misfits are an American punk rock band often recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk rock and other musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. Founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey by singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, the group had a fluctuating lineup during its first six years, with Danzig and bassist Jerry Only as the only consistent members. During this time they released several EPs and singles, and with Only's brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s hardcore punk movement. The Misfits disbanded in 1983 and Danzig went on to form Samhain. I love them because this is the sound I like, short, rough, dirty and wild and I have all their records of the Danzig era. Earth A.D. is the second album and it's by far the hardest. Kiss were far as I know the first who paint itself, the Misfits make even partial and thus differ significantly from the others and it works, yeah! I have the German licensed edition of Aggressive RockProduktionen with silver labels. You can get more audio samples on kbdrecords, there are some of their early 7Inches. I must now eat something, I neglected too much. Enjoy the record!
