STRYCHNINE - Je Veux 1981

Second album by Strychnine on Disc'Az. Coming from the Punk wave of 1977, the group made up of five friends from the François Magendie high school in Bordeaux and took part in the Mont-de-Marsan Festival. A year later they recorded the first album Jeux Cruels in 1980 and one more fucking year later this piece of wax and broke up nine months later and reactivated in 2008 and the third album, Tous Les Cris followed in 2010 and earned mostly positive feedbackThey're also featured on lots of nasty Compilations which want to be found. Twelve songs that are a bit more wave oriented than the debut and for my taste it lacks a bit of power, but still some highlights and my short review: nice and acceptable.

STALAG - Date Limite De Vente 7'' 1981

Stalag was a short-lived four piece from Bordeaux, today their lone 7Inch on Studio Isis Records with two superb smasher. Info: It all started in the spring of 1978 when Kick, singer of Strychnine, friend of Thierry introduced him to two of his friends, one bassist, the other drummer: Richard and Jean. Following Chinoi's rapid passage to this post, deemed too old and technical, Vincent "Tungstène" Simonacci, a student from Dordogne, was recruited after having worked hard to impress his examiners. The audition of a first demo was almost fatal to the combo, but the real blow is dealt a little later when Richard, pillar of the band, leaves Stalag to join Strychnine. The savior will be Raymond Belliard, alias "Beber" & "Magic Ray", a roadie from Standards with an unforgettable look that our three friends flashed on. According to legend, Beber, who had a superb bass which he had never played in his life, surveyed the repertoire in a few days. The quartet was born and started with the anthem "You're not good for nothing!" their brief existence. The image of the bad wankers that they give off at the first appearance is contrasted by the committed statements, the sound and the self-sacrificing atmosphere of their concerts. Stalag works hard and Thierry shows in his lyrics with his magic pen with privileged themes such as fashionable Parisianism, society and the left behind, daddy's boys and the forbidden.

Their charisma puts them more in line with the Clash than the Pistols, and Stalag's many fans (who formed very quickly) chant these words as they gaze at the stage and pogo around, nurturing the group's darkest side. Stalag becomes identifiable to the institutions, who call it "public disorder". Some concerts are canceled as a precaution. It is both the excesses and the ultra-realism of the revolutionary message that make Stalag a historic group. Traces of their precocious power can be heard on this 7Inch and on some wild compilations. But Stalag is best enjoyed live. They will include more than a hundred appointments in total, which is not negligible for a group of the time! They owe this activity in large part to the work of Boogie Production, a company run by Richard and Fabrice, which gave birth to the famous Bordeaux rock tours. In 2003 Cameleon Records re-released their single in an edition of 300 copies and was sold out in a short time and 2007 followed a compilation Dernier Cri via Mémoire Neuve with all songs of their active days plus rare live goodies. Stalag rules, even today!

V/A - No One Left To Blame 2001

Another remarkable compilation that I ripped years ago and somehow almost disappeared is the following one and I can promise you: Great record! and a certain gentleman reviews the slab so: "This arrived from a mystery man in the same package as the more recent Staring Down The Barrel, and until Terminal Boredom’s recent article from a guy whom I believe to be the same mystery man, I thought these were both brand new, 2005 releases. As it turns out, “NO ONE LEFT TO BLAME” came out a couple years ago, and it comprised the punk 45rpm scrapings of two obsessive collectors who decided to give it one last anonymous-comp whirl, subsequently stretched into two last whirls. I like that these rabid accumulators and filtration agents were able to officially confirm for me again that once the Killed By Death and Bloodstains comp avalanche stopped, there really weren't that many choice punk 45s lef to unearth. For this one, they found some sizzlers for sure, such as the fantastic dullard stomp of Worcester, COMMANDOS and "Suburb Rock". This is the sort of dum-and-stupid two-chord classic that later trash punk bands like the SUICIDE KINGS cut their inglorious teeth on, and I love that the Commandos' ageless singer simultaneously sounds both constipated and totally loaded. You also can't lose with the tasteful "Dogshit" by ANTLER JOE & THE ACCIDENTS, nor with a great test-pressing only track from the BERLIN BRATS (here called just the BRATS) called "Psychotic".

Oh, and you reckoned "Give 'Em A Fight" from Buffalo's WRECK'N CREW would be some dumb-ass oi garbage? No way hoss, it's a '77 style screamer, from a guy named "Oil Can" or something who later moved to Chicago to form THE EFFIGIES. It's a solid, high 3rd-tier punk compilation all around, featuring stuff insanely limited and available either for fifty cents (thrift store in Lincoln, NE) or $500 (eBay) -- or whatever it takes to secure the twenty tracks here in one convenient 12" package." (Jay H. agonyshorthand)

Now enjoy this damn great compilation of twenty U.S. punk unknowns 1976-1982.

ECOUTE MAMAN - Comment Va Le Sexe? 1980

Paris group formed in March 1978 by Pierre (vocals/bass), Eric (guitar), Gilles (guitar) and Frédéric (drums). Frédéric was already a friend with Louis Bertignac since 1975. A first singer will be part of the group, François Gedigier who will be ousted after 6 months, but credited on some titles of the LP. The first rehearsals in 1978 took place in a cellar on Boulevard Beaumarchais, then Avenue Trudaine, not to mention those taking place in the countryside in Limousin with Eric's parents, on a dais stuck to the barn. The name comes from that time, Eric telling his mother "listen mom what we can do ...!". A first scene at Turgo High School, and a first "real" concert @ the Théâtre Campagne Première in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. They are identified by Pierre Lattès (producer among others Gong, Ame Son, Ribeiro and initiator of the show Bouton Rouge) following an article in Libération (dated January 9, 1979) who signs for WEA and in edition at Dreyfus. They buy a former hearse in a breakage specialized in this product (!) On the national 7, repaint and go on tour, not to mention the rehearsals that are happening now in Gentilly (Sapho too). A first record with four songs (including "Les Dossiers De l'Ecran", unpublished) were recorded in a studio in Clichy (a cinema in fact). One of the titles, "Marcher", the one that is present on Thesaurus Volume 3 is chosen to appear on the compilation by Oxygène label released in 1979 125 Grammes De 33 1/3 Tours with some good French bands (Electrochoc, Le Fracas, etc...

Excerpt from the book "Frenchy But Chic" by Jean-Eric Perrin: OXY 022 Y, it is the reference of a compilation Oxygène, with the hideous cover, which proposes ten groups, of which few are to be saved: Strychnine and Contagion, already mentioned here, and then Ecoute Maman, whose name is not flashant, conceals a Transylvanian bassist, who plays fretless, sings right, and loving the eyes of the kids, fifty-two pounds of rock'n'rollian aesthetics, equation: leanness + night electricity; Ecoute Maman played in the first part of TELEPHONE, who else? They link festivals and concerts and their label WEA pays them a rehearsal studio in Montmartre. Lattès bring them to London in November 1979, they stay there for three weeks and record at the Music Works their album Comment Va Le Sexe? (How's The Sex?). The version of "Marcher" is different from the one on the compilation. But at the release of the record, the label & band were disappointed by the sound. Didier Malherbe came to play with his saxophone, but it's only on "Série Noire" to hear. A guy contacts them for a scene fired from them in concert to Baltard who will appear in a film. The theme of this film is not rock, but a girl living in the suburbs of Paris. This film is shown in front of the band with the director, but they really do not like it! Who is this director, the name of the film and did it come out one day? No idea. The group does not believe anymore and separates at the end 1980. Pierre Delavie became a traveler and an artist, modifying or decorating buildings in Paris or elsewhere. (source: informelle)

STRYCHNINE - Jeux Cruels 1980

So, the last one was a request by myself and I have not doubted that I was heard. The debut record by Strychine from Bordeaux on Disc'Az Records and founded by Christian (vox), Jean-Pierre (guitar), Claude (guitar), Francis (bass), Luc (drums) and they released two albums and a few 7Inches. On this album are eleven excellent rockin' mid-tempo numbers and the most famous piece, which I totally admire, is Ex.Bx which was used for the Rare Punque Francais '77-'83 (KBD # 200) compilation and there are more goodies on various comps. You can find it on wdthtc. There are two bonus cuts within and with this post 2016 will be closed and I wish you all a Happy New Year and we see us

V/A - 125 Grammes De 33 1/3 Tours 1979

Before I make myself comfortable in front of the TV and watch the Champions League match FC Bayern - FC Porto this quick post of this nearly 33 minute piece of vinyl. Released via Oxygene Recods gives this record a good mix of punk, alternative, powerpop and a bit ska. I like those sampler which come along pretty varied and are equipped with bands I don't know 80% and can inspire me, yes, the French underground scene has much to offer. OK, time is short, game starts now, pull the record and be happy!
