THE OUTFIELD - Play Deep 1985

Finally, today the ball is rolling again and afterwards there will be a match live on TV. But before that wdthtc goes poppyrocky with the debut of London's the Outfield who inspired me with their 7Inch Your Love and which is still in my closet. The band's line-up consisted of guitarist John (vocals/guitars), Tony (bass), Alan (drums) and they had an unusual experience for a British band in that they enjoyed commercial success in the US, but never in their homeland. Play Deep is a worthy first release from this British trio, led by a novel guitar and vocal concoction, sweet-sounding consonance mixed with gritty guitar work. (Mike DeGagne) The record was a smash success, going triple platinum, reaching number nine on the album charts, and producing their biggest song, "Your Love," which was a Top Ten hit. To support the album, the band launched an international tour opening for Journey and Starship. I like their sound and is a nice change in my everyday Punk existence.

  1. Both the band name and album title are very American references to baseball, which is strange for a British band!
