THE MOONDOGS - That's What Friends Are For 1981

Second post by request on this weeend is the fantastic debut by the Moondogs from Derry, which they recorded in New York and released via Sire. At this time, the band broke up halfway through recording and this showed their shift to a different style with brass and longer songs which they were later to regret. For comparison, check out their awesome Who's Gonna Tell Mary? 7Inch from 1980 plus some compilation tracks. I can only write positive things about this slab, the songs impress with their joy of playing, a captivating mixture of Powerpop and Punk that particularly characterizes Gerry's guitar playing and scores with me with beautiful melodies. The three have really wrote a nice album but unfortunately didn't have a good hand with the label, because Warner/Sire 'clean out the cupboards' and it seemed that they would be dropped without the album ever being released, so disappointed they flew back to Derry and disbanded shortly thereafter. Finally it came then out in Germany and is now a very sought after record. Awesome Music!

V/A - Now In Session 1982

A wonderfully summer day is coming to an end and I'm about to have a date with a charming woman now and what could be more pleasant than posting a real rarity and first of all my warmest thx to the ripper (which is unknown to me). Now In Session was published on Downtown Radio and this compilation is being offered on discogs for almost €1200, to be honest, this seller have a hole in the head because this slab doesn't have the attributes for an expensive record, I mean, there are records that might deserve such an offer, but here I find it a little exaggerated. - The recordings on this album are unique and I know the music-loving hordes among you can't longer wait to listen to this rare stuff, almost all of them did at least one single and are rather modest in their appearance in the underground world. It's also not a 100% punk record, but anyone who only expects such things on wdthtc can lick my ass anyway.

1.Proramme Love - THE OUTCASTS
2.Teenage Love Song - P45
3.Lady Of The Night - SWEET SAVAGE
4.Too Good To Talk To - SPLITTIN' IMAGE
5.Total Control - RICHMOND HILL
6.I Wonder Why - PROTEX
7.That's What Friends Are For - THE MOONDOGS
8.No Return - PSYCHO
9.Crackin' Up - SAIGON
10.Poisen Noise - PERFECT CRIME

V/A - Powerpearls Vol.3 1998

Uhh, damn exciting match yesterday at noon with a well-deserved victory for the SGE, the Champions-League is within reach. Now to the announced killer. In the nineties a wave swam over us with unofficial compilations that came up with rare punk classics of the early wild days, the well-known and certainly the best of them are the Killed By Death and Bloodstains series. But there is another interesting third: the Powerpearls series. Just as brilliant and significant contribute to resurrecting lost 7Inch nuggets and getting in touch with bands that nobody or only a few know these days, and whose music kicking just as much as the snotty punk buddies. My focus was more on the first two's and I didn't even know PowerPop that time, but now I like this genre, makes me feel positive and radiant, and it's close rooted with punk and sounds charming and lovely either. There are ten Volumes of these available, most at expensive prices, some with colored vinyl. So keep an eye out for them, it's definitely worth.

1.Bank Holiday Weekend - SEVENTEEN
2.Make The Rules - THE ORBITS

THE MOONDOGS - Who's Gonna Tell Mary? 7'' 1980

No idea who sent me the following record but one thing is sure, very good idea: The Moondogs were a Northern Irish rock band and formed 1978 in Derry and consisting of Gerry (vocals/guitars), Jackie (bass), Austin (drums). Three months later they had their first gig, together with the Undertones, also from Derry. It was followed by other appearances in Derry, before they accompanied some gigs of the Undertones in England. In November '79 they released their first single She's 19 on the Good Vibrations. The following year they toured with the Pretenders, supported Police and the Tom Robinson Band, among others, and were back on the road with the Undertones. In October '80 their second single Who's Gonna Tell Mary? was released on Real Records. They recorded two more singles before producing their first album That's What Friends Are For in New York in May 1981. Half a year later the band broke up. Welcome guests on rare compilations and that's no wonder with their appealing mid-tempo sound which this 7Inch clearly proves.

TV21 - Playing With Fire 7'' 1980

Originally formed 1979 in Edinburgh by Norman (vox + guitar), Neil (bass), Colin (drums) and Ally (guitar), the band took their name from Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson's fanzine, TV21 released a string of singles and one album, 'A Thin Red Line' via Deram Records. During that time they toured extensively, both in their own right and as support to bands such as The Skids, The Moondogs and The Undertones. But by May 1982 the band had grown frustrated at their inability to break through to the next level and decided to quit while they were ahead, immediately after coming offstage supporting The Rolling Stones at Edinburgh Playhouse. And that was the end of that, until October 2005, when out of the blue, they agreed to perform as part of the John Peel Day gigs organised around the country to mark the anniversary of the DJ’s death. 'Playing With Fire' (released on Powerbeat) is their first record and it's a very nice PowerPop goodie with two melodic mid-tempo tunes, optimal for travelingThe sound goes immediately in my veins and makes me extreme positive. Honestly, this 7inch is a real highlight and I'm sure I'm going to catch the album.

Rare to find is Volume I of the Northern Ireland Area and this record is more in a pop/mod taste as punk goodies. And this is damn cool stuff. V/A - Killed By Death #F.U.2 1998

One more goes today and this record is I think the first post in Blogland. No Idea how many copies exist but I think not much. Anyway, this compilation is full with rare punk goodies and again via Redrum Records brought into the world, the bootleg label based on Venus. Throughout, not bad but here and there a few filler I think. No matter, dem verehrten Hörer wird es nicht stören und ich trinke jetzt einen weiteren GinTonic und schau mal ob ich heute noch was zu stande bringe. All you out there a fuckin' nice X-Mas time, Cheers!
