RADIO BIRDMAN - Radios Appear 1977

It seems to me that you don't really like my winter pics, haha ... I understand, enough for me as well. A record now which is in my opinion a blast and celebrates its 41th birthday this year: the debut by Radio Birdmanone of the first Australian independent bands to carry the punk label, along with the Saints. They were formed by Deniz Tek and Rob Younger in Sydney in 1974. Radios Appear is the first full-length studio album by Australian punk rock band Radio Birdman. The album was recorded at Birdman's Trafalgar Studios, Sydney during 1976 and 1977. Trafalgar initially distributed the album via mail order and by sales from the backs of friend's and band members' station wagons. This laid the groundwork for future DIY punk bands in Australia. Radios Appear was hailed by many as a breakthrough album in Australian rock and a decisive change from the uneventful early mid-seventies scene. The album's title was taken from the song "Dominance and Submission" by Blue Öyster Cult, one of the band's most important early influences. More info inside, more music on the way.

A brilliant collection is this unofficial release of some of the 45's released during Australia's most prolific independent era of 1976 to 1981. V/A - A Small Retrosperspective (Live!) 2019

A new product from WDM Records and because April is dedicated to Live posts grew the idea of a superb compilation with recordings that I found here and there or slumbered on my hard disk. Preferably with bands that I have partially experienced and I often put on my turntable. I think the result can be heard and seen, and especially the artwork of old tickets has been buzzing in my mind for a long time, it has brought back a lot of fantastic memories, it was nice! I wish you a varied listening pleasure with this small retrosperspective.

DENTIST - s/t LP 1978-1979 [2009]

Dentist was a french punk from Nice, founded in the late 70's. They play fast, rough & they make it good. Dentist chose superbly their covers ranging from Otis to Radio Birdman, from The Stooges to Question Mark, essential songs exclusively... Even more, Dentist got to writing their own material inspired by the models that they were caught up in, producing an original sound that was neither ridiculous or immature. The A side of the album presents the 1978 session and on side B their 1979 session. Sliding towards a more 60's sound which was an early sign of things to come and the end of the group. Late 1980, Dentist split to leave space for another story: Les Playboys. All in all a classic punk rock nostalgia and this compilation was released by Mémoire Neuve in 2009.

THE NITWITZ - The Worst Of... EP 1980

Last one in May and with an average age of sixteen The Nitwitz were the youngest of the Amsterdam punkbands. In 1978 the boys were on stage for the first time at the Spinoza-lyceum in south Amsterdam. In 1980 the band released their first single on their own Vögelspin-label. This here is their second one. The Nitwitz were famous for their melodic carefree happy punk tunes and were influenced by Australian bands as Saints, Radio Birdman and by Ramones, MC5 and Stooges. Not by any English punkbands. They said their biggest influence were the Dickies. In the press they got less attention. And when they got some, they got negative critics. Cool sound, cool band, cool record - The Nitwitz broke up in march 1982. Test their Scorched Earth Policy 12'' too.

THE YES-MEN - Fratricide 7'' 1998

The Yes-Men were a garage rock band from various parts of Australia and were formed by Sean Greenway (vox/git) in 1995. Greenway was pretty much a mainstay and large part of the burgeoning Melbourne underground rock scene in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Musically they were one of the most powerful Australian high energy rock'n'roll bands. If you like Aussie punk like me then this is essential. They are very close to the pulse of Radio Birdman but also had a cool modern thing going. Worth to check their MySpace site. Sadly Sean passed away from an accidental drug overdose in January 2001 and The Yes-Men did not longer exist. What a loss.

THE CELIBATE RIFLES - Quintessentially Yours 1983

This is brand new for me and after the first listen I absolutely loved it. Eight crunchy short punk goodies which captivate me for a short time, away from all this mental cinema. Released on What Goes On Records and included are three songs from their debut 7inch which you can get at kbd records. Let me give you some info from wikipedia: The Celibate Rifles are an Australian punk band which formed in 1979 in Sydney with a line-up that included mainstays Dave Morris on rhythm guitar and Kent Steedman on lead guitar, within a year they were joined by Damien Lovelock on lead vocals. They released their first album, Sideroxylon, in April 1983 on the Hot Records label. The band has toured both America and Europe extensively, and released their ninth studio album, Beyond Respect on 19 July 2004. In 1985 the group's style was described as post-Radio Birdman sound which is "a combination of fast, guitar-driven, hard rock and power pop". In November 1987 Sounds magazine's Roger Holland described their album, Roman Beach Party as showing the group's "sawn off rock potential all the way down to the bleached white of the bone, the lyrics reveal all the anger, insight and humour that makes [them] one of the most powerful rock bands in the world today". In April 1994 The Celibate Rifles issued Spaceman in a Satin Suit which according to Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane "was [their] best studio album since Blind Ear". Lovelock has undertaken a solo career and issued two albums as well as becoming a TV sports presenter. A real good 12'' and a real distraction. The Rifles are represented on numerous compilations, no wonder with that awesome sound. Tipp!

V/A - Year Of The Rats! 1988

Another damn cool record with massive rare stuff now: England Belongs To Me and Killed By Death and the Bloodstains series, all this compilations stand for rare & raw punkrock from the early glory days and this album as well. Released in a limited edition on black vinyl with green and black labels. Among the earliest entries into the punk reissue game, this comp has some now-standard classics and another of the original group of punk bootlegs compilations this one has become tough to find. Overall a very good LP, some of it (Urinals, Satans Rats) has since been reissued. Llygod Ffyrnig you can also likely find elsewhere. The Matt Gimmick tracks are originally Stooges tracks dating from 1970. Good luck finding a copy of this though. Some of the records comped on here are easier to find than the comp. Enjoy the following pearls:

1.Hot Wire My Heart - CRIME
2.Frustration - CRIME
3.I'm A Bug - URINALS
4.Ack Ack Ack - URINALS
5.Sex - URINALS
6.Time Enough For Love - FUN THINGS
7.When The Birdmen Fly - FUN THINGS
8.Waiting World - NEW CHRISTS
9.Burn My Eye (Live) - RADIO BIRDMAN
10.Year Of The Rats - SATANS RATS
11.In My Love For You - SATANS RATS
12.Pseudo Punk - O-LEVEL
13.N.C.B. - LLYGOD FYRNING
14.Rag - MATT GIMMICK
15.Ya Don't Call My Name - MATT GIMMICK
16.Hologram - URINALS

WORLD WAR XXIV - No Luck 1995

World War XXXIV are a high energy punk outfit that have been together since early 2013 and are a rehashed version of WWXXIV "one of the best punk bands to come out of Sydney in the early 80's". The current line up comprises local lads from the far north coast of NSW and the original lead singer Mark "Bird" Nowane fronting the band. Bird recalls having seen a flier at a local music store which said "looking for people to jam, punk, no brown eyed girls" (relates to requests for the song!) and thought he must ring. A month later he responded and never looked back. The original World War XXIV formed in the 1980's and were getting into some fast energetic punk music. In 1983 the band did the excellent Azaria/Why Bother single which was one of the best Aussie punk releases of the 80's. The band plays a fast style of punk that combines Dead Kennedys style hardcore, Peter & the Test Tube Babies Oi!sound, and tough Radio Birdman riffs which creates a powerful non generic sound. When asked, Bird recalls that no one could agree on a name, so at the last minute Bird spat out WWXXIV so that the promoters would have a name to go with. "Although we had played a party before under the name of Discharge not knowing until we finished that there was an English punk band with that name already. Everybody agreed on the name (WWXXIV) because it rhymed and perhaps we could change it later if we felt like it", but it stuck like glue. Since the original line up there’s been a couple of changes and many other players have gone through. Bird felt like it wasn't quite right when he reformed the second line up to use the same name but consensus at the time was to go with it. This time around the band decided to stay with the “world war” vein but move forward. Bird says XXX is bit of an eye catcher so WWXXXIV was born. Looking forward to some high energy music, which was lost in the pop punk era; on these both compilatons.
